I'm new to the forum, but not necessarily new to Apple. I have a aluminum MacBook and have it connected via display port to a Dell monitor (have a cinema display on order from macmall due in tomorrow!). My question is while I have the MB connected to the display, is there a way I can have the laptop lid closed and prevent the computer from going to sleep?

I've been searching around for some time to try and figure out how to hook up my 360 (and it's HDMI output) to my mac pro (quad, 7Gb ram) and 30" cinema display. Apple lists this on their site: [URL] but it's designed as a video capture card, so I'm not sure if it's appropriate for using simply to play the 360 on. Are there any other pci express cards or units which will allow me to take the output from the 360, input it through my Mac Pro and display it on my cinema display without lag, wonky setups, or hijacking anything?

Mac Pro, 30" ACD, Apple LED 24" display, and 360 and I have a uMBP.
I am using a 23" cinema display as my main screen connected to my mac book pro. It is working fine but I was wondering if I could remove the usb connection leaving only the DVI connection and the Firewire connection. (So I have one more usb port to plug stuff) I know for an IPod both were provided in case you don't have a firewire in your laptop when only 1 is needed.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an older 23" Mac HD Cinema Display monitor with an ADC connector. I just purchased a 15" MacBook Pro and want to use the 23" display. The Apple Store where I purchased the notebook sold me a DVI to MiniDisplay. But I was told I would need to buy an ADC DVI adapter that Apple no longer carries. EBay has many Model A1006 DVI ADC adapters for sale. It looked like it has the plug configuration I need to mate the two adapters.
Basically, I need a Female ADC plug that connects to the Cinema Display and a Male DVI to connect to the DVI to MiniDisplay adapter I have now. I called Apple Support and was told "it should work" but they won't guarantee it will since they don't support either the monitor or the A1006 connector. Can anyone who has successfully done what I'm trying to do please let me know? Will the Model A1006 DVI adapter work with the DVI MiniDisplay adapter?
I have a 23" Apple Cinema Display (the older model in the clear plastic casing) with a Dual 2ghz G5. I'm not to technically inclined yet as I just got into computers and decided to give macs a try. I just got a xbox 360 and was hoping to connect it to my cinema display. Just wondering if this is possible. From what I understand my G5 has and DVI out which is why I had to get a DVI to ADC adapter for it to work with my display. Microsoft sells a VGA adapter but I'm guessing that will not work with my display. Also if it is possible what type of device would I need to use the monitor with the xbox and the G5 together? (I know I can't use them at the same time but alternate so I don't have to keep unplugging and hooking up cables every time I go between machines).

However, I've heard of switchers such as the Gefen HD Mate that would make this possible. These are hard to find now (and if they are available, they're ridiculously expensive). Are there any other ways to make this work?

Wondering whats the best way to connect and disconnect my computer with the display if I plan on using it in clamshell mode? Should I sleep it before I connect or disconnect? Does it matter?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm using my Macbook Pro as a desktop computer. It is connect to my 32" LCD TV through a Mini DisplayPort -> DVI and a DVI -> HDMI cable.
All is working correctly, except that I don't want to use the Macbook display, I just want to disable it.I know I can just turn the brightness all the way down until there's no image, but this method won't properly disable the display.
Another way is to close the Macbook, wait for it to go in sleep mode (white light blinks) and then move the mouse until the screen appears in the TV. This method really disables the main display (it no longer appears in the Displays pannel at System Preferences), but is a lot inconvenient. I don't want to have to close the Macbook everytime I boot my system and don't want to let the Macbook powered on 24/7, even in sleep mode. I like to just turn my computer off and then power it on whenever I need to.
I have just seen another thread here which links to the following Apple KB article about running in clamshell mode. [URL]. It says something about putting your laptop to sleep before removing the external monitor. I am not running in clamshell mode but I have a dual screen setup using a Mini DisplayPort to VGA adapter. When I take my MBP (2010 - see sig) off my desk, do I need to put it to sleep to remove the Mini DisplayPort connector, and, if so, does anyone know why this is necessary?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI just got a new MacBook Pro and 24-inch LED Cinema Display. I was planning on using one of the USB ports on the back of the display to connect a 1 Tb WD My Book drive as Time Machine backup. I've managed the first backup and everything seemed to be working fine, but occasionally when I wake the computer from sleeping I get an error saying that I disconnected my drive without ejecting it. Nothing has been disconnected, so I'm worried that the USB ports don't stay powered on when monitor/computer sleep, or that there is some other issue using a USB peripheral that is for all intents and purposes plugged into another USB peripheral. Has anyone else had these issues? I'd rather keep things connected the way they are right now- I have 4-5 other external drives I need to access on a regular basis, so going directly into the USB on my MacBook isn't an appealing option.

I'm having a problem with my PowerBook G4 where is goes into sleep mode at random times. Mostly when I am streaming video..or at times the fan comes on, it sounds super high then boom. sleep mode again. After hitting the space bar, it comes back on, but it'll happen again shortly after. View 5 Replies View RelatedAs of last night, my MBP started acting very strangely. After entering my username and password, it would enter the desktop for a short period of time and then kick back into sleep mode; the screen would turn back to black. Sometimes it will let me stay on the desktop for a long time and other times it will hardly let me stay on the desktop. I called apple support and they had me start the computer in safe mode; even then it occasionally kicks me out.
The tech guy said that it was a "strange software issue" and not a hardware issue. I thought it was a hard drive issue; my hard drive makes an odd sound when it unlocks (a grinding sound), but it has been doing that for quite some time with no issues. I tried to reset the SMC and it didn't do anything.
How should I remedy this problem? Is this a hard drive issue? Hard drive failure? Has the grinding sound finally caught up with me? I am running OS X; not leopard or snow leopard. I know I need to upgrade, but this shouldn't be happening.

I have the unibody macbook pro, and so I've been reading through reviews now for a week ... my biggest concern is the dual-link dvi adapter... I still see posts (August or September 2010) with people experiencing issues, even with the firmware 1.3!I wanted to ask you people if I should go for it or dig the 27 inch even though it's glossy... I have a few people in the office (also graphic designers) working on iMacs and got used to the glossy.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI leave my Air on pretty much all the time, and put it to sleep while moving around etc. Sleeping it disconnect the Airport connection - which if very annoying. At a desk I've just been dimming the display all the way off in order to keep my connection.
However, I recently noticed that by setting a "sleep display" hot corner, my network connection is maintained.
I have 2 questions:
1) Is sleep display equivalent (functionally) to simply dimming the display all the way down?
2) Is there a way to either set up a shortcut to sleep the display (other than a hot corner) and/or set it so that only the DISPLAY sleeps after 'x' minutes?
I have a macbook pro 13" early 2011 and I'm se as shown in the pictures (since i upgraded to os x yosemite) . It happens after display sleep or computer sleep on login not on boot up .I've noticed that i run out of ram when the problem appears (only 15MB RAM available out of 4GB), though i doesn't happen every time . I've talked to service and told me its either motherboard replacement or because the ram isn't enough (gpu shares with main ram) so maybe i should try upgrading ram. URL....

I've hooked up my 30" Apple Cinema Display to the new iMac 27" and the highest resolution I'm getting as an option is 1280x800... The iMac correctly detects the ACD as a Cinema HD display but limits my resolution. Why oh why?!
I have torrents going all the time. If the computer goes to sleep, the internet disconnects, so they stop. Display sleep wouldn't disconnect though. Is it OK to have computer sleep on "never" but keep display on "15 minutes"? I don't usually even leave the computer on overnight.

I mostly work in Logic and love that I see lots of things on the 30" but the 23" is much easier on my eyes.Is there such a thing as a display with 2560x1600 (like the 30" Apple) but that is LARGER than a 30 inch so I can see everything bigger in Logic??? Maybe a 34 or 37"? Did a search but haven't come up with anything other than other 30" displays.

I am in love with the 30" cinema display, but according to technical support today, my setup is not compatible (supposedly, but the person on the phone didn't sound to sure). I have a mini DVI, but the 30" requires a dual DVI. I think the 23" display requires DVI, which I can attain with an adapter. Does anyone have suggestions for what I can use with my computer? The bigger the better for me. Also what do you think of the older (plastic case) apple displays?
View 1 Replies View RelatedPurchased a brand new 27" i7 imac a few weeks ago, display is awesome!!! I was using my old 28" LCD monitor from my PC and running dual displays on the iMac. The 28" LCD monitor annoyed me a bit because i could not get the same color/crispness/brightness that i got from the iMac. ( also it has a Matt screen and i am more into the glossy screens ) So i found a used 24" cinema display locally. Paid 600.00 and it came with 2 yrs of AppleCare. It is only 7 months old ( still have 5 months under orignal warranty ) Got home, hooked it up and it had a "hint" of yellowness to it, It wasn't a exact image of my iMacs display...I tried to calibrate it also, but it still had just a HINT of yellowness....Nothing at all major, but enough for me to be annoyed with it.
