MacBook Pro :: How To Configure The Setup - Finding Guide

Jun 28, 2009

I've been a bit of a PC nerd my whole life. I've always been the one who fixed my family and friends computers, tinkered with downloaded games software, overclocked, etc... I always really enjoyed a new projected because of all of the research and work it would entail, and then because I knew I was working towards the end product that I wanted.

I got my new 13" MBP yesterday and just sat down with it tonight for the first time, and in about 5 hours i've installed about a dozen big programs, made a boot camp partition, and i'm finishing installing windows 7 right now...

I am trying to setup a firefighter's apple laptop into our linksys net at firestation. She got access fine when we did not have it secured but now we setup a wep key. All other members can get in by entering wep key when they choose the wireless router but when we input the wep key to apple laptop airport I think we get connection error. Key is definitely right. What changed in the apple setup other than the wep key, again when signal was unsecure laptop safari worked fine. The linksys is a B about 3 years old.

Hardware :: Extended Wireless Network - Multiple Airport Express Wireless Setup

May 14, 2009

I'm working in a home/home-office environment right now which was setup by someone else and I've noticed some odd network behavior when moving about the property. Looking at the setup, the relevant portion is: Cable modem - Airport Extreme - 10 port wired switch - 3x Airport Express in different areas of the house. The configuration of each device has the Extreme and all three Express devices set to "create a wireless network" with the network name the same for all four of them. I am not a networking expert but I would have thought that the Extreme should be set to be the "master" in a WDS network and the Express should each be set to participate in that WDS network. If they're all hosting their own wireless network with the same name and the coverage overlaps, how does a PC know which one it's using? Or maybe this doesn't matter. I just know that when we move from one room to another we frequently have to re-select the wireless network to establish connectivity.

Can i just buy another standard $40 wireless G router and "extend" my wireless network? if so, how easy would this be to accomplish? would it be as simple as hooking up the $40 router with my airport extreme using via ethernet cable so that it extends it? update: I am looking at this router...would this accomplish my purpose? OS X :: How To Configure MacBook AirPort For 5 Ghz Wireless Band

Jun 16, 2010

I have one of those "new" (well, mine's over a year old now) 13" aluminum-cased MacBooks (what is the official name for these anyways, Intel Core-Duo or something?... I digress). I am using the default/included 'AirPort' wireless thingy.

All I want to know is: How do I ensure that my AirPort is configured properly to access a 5 ghz wireless band? I just setup my wireless router to broadcast at 5 ghz and I want to make sure my MacBook is receiving at 5 ghz/optimal speed. So, what steps do I take to check this and/or configure it as such?

OS X :: How To Configure "ultimate" Mac Home Setup

Jul 25, 2008

I am eager to setup a home system with a few Macs, a few iPhones, a Time Capsule (and soon an AppleTV).

I'd like to have my music and photos available from my wife's Mac and vice versa. In addition, I'd like a central backup place. Here are my questions:

1. Am I correct in believing that both of us can use the same Time Capsule for out individual Time Machine backups? If yes, do you have any configuration tips?

2. Can we use the Time Capsule as a file server in addition to a backup hard drive? In other words, can we put our shared photos and music on the Time Capsule? Is this desirable?

3. If we put our photos and music on the Time Capsule (assuming that possible and desirable), how would we sync subsets of the music collection, etc. with our iPhones?

4. Since we have multiple Macs, should we dedicate one to each of our iPhones for syncing and updates, etc.? Or is it just as easy to setup each computer with multiple users?

5. How would we integrate our TV and stereo? How exactly do AppleTV and Airport Express fit into the picture?

6. Finally, how important would a multiple (home) version of MobileMe for creating the glue or some flexibility in this setup?

Hardware :: Wireless Hard Drive Setup For Mac?

May 16, 2010

I am making a laptop switch from PC to Mac (MacBook). In the past my PC would always get bogged down because of too much music, pictures, and movies and I vowed that this would not happen on my new Mac. In addition, I plan on getting the iPad too when the price drops. What I would like to do is have a central, wireless, "server-like" drive that both the MacBook and the iPad could draw from.

My first thought was the TimeCapsule, but the 2 TB model is pretty expensive, and I don't like the idea that if the router or hard-drive fails then I am out of both.

My idea now is to get an airport extreme and hook up an external hard-drive. My quesion is this: can I effectively use an external hard-drive as my main hard drive? It seems that all of these external hard-drives are marketed as "back-up." What external hard-drive should I look at?

Windows On Mac :: BootCamp - How To Setup Wireless Internet

Mar 2, 2009

I currently own a Macbook I purchased in January 2009. A few days ago I installed Boot Camp Agent so I could use it to play certain games I could not run using Parallels. I downloaded Boot Camp following the directions it comes with. (Installed Windows XP Pro, then installed Mac OSX Leopard 10.5). Everything works fine except I cannot figure out how to use the wireless network established in my home.

On the Mac side, I can connect to the internet with the Airport fine, never have a problem on that side. When switched to the Windows side I have no wireless options. Though I can use the internet when using an ethernet cable connected directly to my router (Linksys WRT110). I have read soo many forum posts and nothing I have read has helped so far. When I go to Network Connections and Properties, I do not have a Wireless Network Connection tab.

Hardware :: Wireless External USB Drive Setup

Jul 30, 2009

I have a question regarding setting up my external drives to be accessed over my wireless home network. We have three usb externals(2 x WD passports and 1 x Lacie 1tb) that, as I've already mentioned, we'd love to be able to access over our network. We have two computers, a Dell(four years old) and a Macbook Pro(one year old). Our wireless modem is a fairly recent Belkin but does not have any usb ports.

So my understanding is that we need to invest in a wireless usb router. I've looked at the Apple Airport Extreme but it only has one usb port. Can a usb hub overcome this? Will the three drives be accessible on both computers? Does the PC/Apple environment make things complex? Is the airport extreme a good choice? Are there other options? Is it fairly common place to do this?

OS X :: Time Capsule Setup / Configuration For Ethernet And Wireless?

Jun 29, 2008

I've got a Time Capsule attached to an Ethernet network, which gets it's internet access from DSL. I can't seem to get the configuration I want. I'd like it to be part of the ethernet network, available to Macs on the network and I'd like it to act as a wireless access point for Macbooks and Macbook Pros. But when I go through the Airport Utility install, once I tell it it is to connect to the network, which already has internet set up through DSL, then it won't allow me to set up wireless. It's as if it wants to work one way or the other. And the instructions are confusing about which port in the back of the unit to insert the network cable. I did manage to get it set up and connected to the network, and to deliver wireless, but I ended up creating a "bridge" and doing things I did not quite understand.

I ended up creating a wireless network and I guess "bridging" that network with the ethernet. Maybe that's the right thing to do, I don't know. Maybe I'm just not understanding the terminology right. is "creating a wireless network" the same thing as merely creating a wireless access point for a wireless device to connect too? I guess I was thinking that they were two different things, maybe not. So, it's probably a simple thing, and I hope someone can just tell me in what way I am supposed to set up the Time Capsule. I know I got it working, but I can't even remember how after a zillion tries I even got it working right.

My question is can I use the Time Capsule in Bridge mode and utilize the Ethernet connections for my iMac? This way backups will be much quicker to the Time Capsule. If anyone sees any areas in my setup that could be improved please let me know.

OS X :: Airport Extreme Setup - Can't Find Wireless Device

The problem I'm having is that Airport Utility is saying it can't find any wireless devices. I have the Airport's Internet WAN port connected to my wall's ethernet port and the Airport's status light is solid green. What I want to do is get a wireless signal from the ethernet port on my wall. Everything in the set up guide and everything I find online has to do with setting the Airport up with a DSL or Cable Modem.
