Hardware :: Window Sizes And Positions For Different Resolutions?

May 17, 2009

I just bought a 24" ACD, and I love it. However, because my MacBook Pro is only 1440x900 resolution, if I resize anything it'll go out of proportion on my MacBook Pro screen.

Ideally, if there was such a program, I'd love to be able to have my windows set a size and position for 1900x1200 resolution, and for them to have a different size and revert to that when I use my MacBook Pro's 1440x900 display.

Does that make sense? I just don't think I can be bothered having to resize Safari, drag any windows that were over on the right hand side of the 24" display back over on my MacBook Pro display just to see them when I unplug the 24".

I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to make an application that does something like that - just take note of the window positions and sizes for both resolutions and switch between them when the resolution is changed.

OS X :: Saving Window Positions And Sizes?

Dec 9, 2009

I work with different resolution monitors at work and home. 22" 1920x1200 at work and 30" 2560x1600 at home. The problem is that OSX tends to throw the windows out of place on the 30" (connected via mini-DP to Displayport cable on my MBP 13") or resizes them to the 1280x800 size of the internal monitor after waking from sleep when connecting the 30" display at home.

Is there any program that would save and restore the window positions and sizes so I wouldn't have to rearrange them all the time?

MacBook Pro :: Connecting Two DVI Monitors Of Different Sizes And Resolutions?

Jul 30, 2010

I have a MacBook Pro 13" purchased in 2009, and I'd like to be able to use it as my main computer, which would mean plugging it into my monitors. I currently have two DVI monitors, of different sizes and resolutions (one 24" running at 1920x1080 and one 19" running at 1440x900). Is there any way to use both of these with my MacBook Pro?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: External Monitor Window Positions Lost?

Feb 22, 2012

I was just upgraded from a 13" mbp on 10.6 to a 15" mbp on 10.7.3 and I'mn having a lot of issues with the UI changes.  The biggest bother at the moment deals with window positions when I undock my laptop to take it to a meeting.  I unplug all the cables, head to a meeting, and when I get back and plug everything in, my external monitor shows a blank desktop.  I need to drag everything back into place for a two display setup.

If I move the menu bar to the external display everything will shoot over to the external display when docked, leaving the mbp screen empty. This is a real pain and I can't figure out what purpose it serves.

Is there a setting I could change to correct this behavior?

OS X Mavericks :: 10.9.4 / Window Positions Not Stored When Changing From One To Another User

Aug 22, 2014

I'm using OS X 10.9.4 on an iMac (late 2010).

I have a problem with window positions not being where they should be when changing from one logged in user to another logged in user. I have two user accounts and the problem occurs only for one user. I will describe the problem using the below combination of text and images.

I have tried all sorts of things including, repair permissions, boot into the restore mode to do an ACL repair, but I have also tried to delete and recreate the account that has the resolution problem without any success.

Step 1: I'm logged in as user number one, all good.

Step 2: Now it is time to change to user number two.

Step 3: The user change is done with no problems at all. When I, from user number two, changes back to user number one again this happens.

The normal spin: Wierd half screen grey and all windows are gathered ontop of each other instead of being left were they was previous to the user change. The screen does not get half grey when I do the user change in the other direction.

The whole screen is back but all windows are still gathered ontop of each other instead of being left were they was previous to the user change.

OS X :: Remembering App Positions For Single/dual Monitor Setups?

Feb 27, 2009

I'm running Mac OS 10.5.6. When I plug in the external monitor to my MacBook Pro, I setup Firefox and Entourage on my notebook monitor and Photoshop on the external. I also move the Apple menu bar to the external (since PS is my main app I like having the menu bar close by). Photoshop doesn't present a problem because I'm able to switch the layout for different workspaces (laptop alone or laptop and external), but I find that Firefox and Entourage don't remember their positions.

For example, my current setup is dual monitors as mentioned above. When I get home and power up the notebook, I'll launch all the same apps. Firefox is just barely within view hanging off the left side of the screen so I'll grab the window and drag it over so I can access the green button (not sure what this is called). Entourage displays just fine. When I get back to work the next day and plug in the external, Firefox displays on the external with the window sized to fit the notebook monitor) and I'll just drag it over. Entourage loads into the external as maximized and I'll drag it over and click the green button.

OS X :: 16:9 Resolutions No Longer Available?

May 14, 2009

I just noticed that all of my 16:9 resolutions have just disappeared from my available resolutions list in system preferences. They were there before. OS X :: How To Use Lower Resolutions On A Mac

Jun 28, 2009

I am getting a Macbook Pro where the native resolution will be 1440 x 900 (I think).

Some older games (that I like to still play) do not support wide screen resolutions. On my PC this isn't an issue because under the nvidia control panel there is an option to tell the resolution not to scale. You get a black border around your screen if you do this, but at least it doesn't stretch it which looks awful.

IMac :: Not All Resolutions Available In Windows?

May 14, 2009

I've had my 2009 Mac mini for a while now, and one thing has bothered me and I've yet to find anything on Google for this. I have an Acer 22" X223w monitor and in OS X I can select a bunch of 16:10 resolutions including 1280x800. Using Boot Camp, in Windows I do not have 1280x800 as an option. Is there any particular reason why this resolution would be in OS X but not Windows? Is there a way to get 1280x800 to work in Windows?

OS X :: Wallpaper Size To Use For Multiple Resolutions?

Oct 9, 2010

My current set up involves my 13" MacBook Pro (1280x800 res screen) hooked up to my external 1920x1080 24" monitor. I love using desktop wallpapers, but am trying to figure out a unified resolution that would match both screen resolutions since I frequently unhook my MacBook Pro and use it without the main monitor attached. I also dual-boot with Windows 7 so I have a shared partition that I have the wallpapers in. I thought I could disconnect the MacBook Pro and have a separate wallpaper for it in OS X; however, since I use it with the lid closed, when I did that, the wallpaper I had on my main monitor was used on my MacBook Pro's screen. For those of you who have a similar set up, what resolution wallpaper do you use that works without adjustment on both 1080p and 1280x800 resolutions? 1900x1200?

Mac Pro :: Gaming At Triple Monitor Resolutions?

I know that you'd need at least 2 graphics cards to run the 3 monitors. Is there a way to play games using all 3 monitors (if the game supports it). I know that with Windows, you would just use software supplied with the video card and make the computer "think" that it's 1 big display. With OS X, is there any way I can play games at triple monitor resolutions? I am also open to Bootcamp ideas, but then don't you have the same problem again because you have multiple video cards instead of just one?

Mac Pro :: Mini Display Port Not Working At Resolutions Over 1600X1200?

Apr 15, 2009

Problem:

Apple Mini Display Port does NOT work at resolutions over 1600X1200 on NON Apple Cinema Displays.

That means if you own any other brand of monitor such as NEC, Lacie, etc. you will NOT get native resolution on your 24 inch monitor as it is stuck at a maximum resolution of 1600X1200.

This story was mentioned on "Macbreak Weekly" show 4-14-2009. I have since checked with a few people and it would indeed seem to be true at this point.

I REALLY hope a solution from Apple comes soon and this is not some new policy of theirs. If so, it may be the last Mac Pro I will or can ever own. The reason is I do a lot of 3D work with C4D, Vue, Modo and Photoshop CS4 so I MUST have a monitor like the high-end ones from Lacie that have 100% color gamut and Adobe RGB. I can NOT be tied down to an Apple Cinema display due to that work. At this time, it seems this means I would only get 1600X1200 resolution on that 24 inch monitor.

I am HIGHLY concerned by this. Has anyone else confirmed this too and if so what the heck is Apple thinking or better still going to do about it? I LOVE my Mac Pro but if they start forcing Apple displays on us then I won't be buying another Mac, it's just that simple.
