View 1 RepliesCurrently I have a 15" macbook pro and a 24" Cinema display since using this set-up can go back to single screen!
Thinking of either getting the big 27" or a base model 21.5" and keeping the 24 cinema display as extended monitor. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Any thoughts on the sweet spot of the imac lineup? seems either base model or top model to me
How do I reformat a MacBook Air from Mac OS Extended to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) so it will boot / reinstall Lion?Â
Info:
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4)
What's the difference between Mac OS Extended and Mac OS Extended (Journaled)? Which one is better to format an external hdd that's going to be use mainly as a scratch disk?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was surprised one day to find an inch of white line running from top to bottom on my screen. Then after a week it expanded to two inches white line, then suddenly it turned all black and I can't see two inches of my screen from the right edge. I was reading some forums and found out that I can use a dell monitor as a secondary monitor, but is it possible to use the dell monitor as the primary monitor in case the black line will spread throughout the entire iMac screen? so the iMac would serve as a stand alone processor like a regular desktop?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a 27" i7. I have a 24" DVI Montior hooked up to it via MDP->DVI adaptor. When the 24" Monitor is on, everything is fine. When I turn the monitor off, the magic mouse tracking on the 27" screen stutters. I am not kidding - it took me ages to figure out that to fix I either need to turn the other monitor on OR disconnect the MDP->DVI adaptor.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an Intel IMAC, which is now out of warranty as I have had it for 16 months (and I was dumb enough not to get AppleCare). A few days back, my computer would not startup and everytime I hit the power button, I would hear some spinning noise but no chime from the iMAC. Yesterday, I tried it again and this time I heard the chime but the monitor did not start. I was then able to SSH into the MAC and see that it is indeed connected to the network and booted up, but the screen is still dead. Any ideas what I should do before the painful trip to the apple store ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a 27" Imac and want to use an old 19" monitor as an external unit. I have it hooked up and turned on. Just the old wallpaper shows on it. There isn't an icon or anything diff on my iMac screen for it. How do I use the external? I realize this is pretty dumb, but I'm a newbie here and my Mac expert son is in NC....
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a newer iMac 24" bought in 11/2007. I have the mini-dvi to vga converter and when I connect it to a external tv capable of 1024x768, the iMac freezes and does nothing. I disconnect and the screen turns blue and the flickers back on and everything works. I have made the connection then booted up, and I have tried every resolution all the way down to 640x480, same thing it just locks up the screen, but again as soon as I unplug the mini-dvi to vga cable from the iMac it flicks to a blue screen and everything comes back. I have reviewed dmesg nothing, and revieiw /var/log/messages. Is there any troubleshooting I can do. I am old school unix/linux guy just converted my family to Apple and would like to use the display on my tv to watch my iTunes movies.

View 21 Replies View RelatedI know this question has been asked before, but, monitors/prices change so frequently I want to make sure I get an up-to-date answer!I've recently purchased the new entry-level 21.5" iMac, and I am currently using it alongside a 20" Dell 2005FPW (which I already had).
I want to replace this monitor with a newer one that will be a better match with the iMac's own display. At the moment, the main differences seem to be brightness (the iMac is LED-backlit), contrast & colour, and finally the 'gloss' finish on the screen.Does anyone have any good recommendations/suggestions? I'm not looking for anything massive (same size as the iMac or slightly larger - I've no idea what the limit is to what can be run off the mini displayport?). Budget is around 200 (which is around $320 apparently!).
I can't make a decision about what monitor I should buy to use with my new iMac 27. I have a limit budget about $400 -$500. I narrow my choice into these models, which are Dell U2410 and HP 2710m or Dell U2311H.
I'm a Software Engineer and I'm using the Dell U2410 at my company and I dont have any problem with it. I can get it only $435
The problem is that I would like to know people using 27 iMac with a smaller monitor like 24 inch. What do you feel? any different? That's why my choice includes Hp2710M even if it's not the IPS monitor but a TN monitor. I cna get it $340
The Dell U2311h is the IPS monitor as well and I can get it only $250. With only one inch less than U2410 but less price almost $200, I could not ignore it.
Should i get ont of the IPS monitor even if the screen is smaller or use the same size with my iMac 27? I cant afford the IPS 27 inch.
Is this possible? Is there a workaround for it?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI read an article about just using a laptop as your main computer, desktop. So I went to a MBP 2.16 dual core version which has been working out except for times when I need to get accurate color correction for my pro photography business. I have an older, too old now CRT that I hoop up to it many times for photo editing but now I realize that that monitor needs to be replaced. So here is the question what are the pros and cons for adding another computer, do I really need it. I am trying to make a decision. I really like my MBP, I can do everything on it and the speed is fine. Also having only one computer is easy for backing up and not worrying about file sharing and all the nonsense I guess. I have an office with my CRT in there much most of the time but it's dark and boring so I bring my laptop in the kitchen where I surf, edit and watch tv from the living room. That being said I just started to get the bug about a new quad Imac 27" and went yesterday to look at it. I came very close to walking out with it. Yes it would be awesome to have but do I really need it? The other alternative is buying the new 24" ips screen and running that off my MBP when I need to do critical photo editing. Then I am thinking my laptop is over 3 years old now and wonder what is the life on it? I would hate to buy the nice desk top and not use it, plus I would need more backup systems etc. I do you external HD.s for all my clients photos so if I choose to work on them I just move the HD. Any advice? New 27" Imac or will the 24" monitor suffice?
View 5 Replies View RelatedBasically if I were to buy an iMac I would want to use it as a monitor for my PC as well so I don't have two monitors on my desk. I've done some searching and can't really find a "yes this works" or a "no it doesn't work". My PC's video card has DVI and HDMI outputs on it. Could I use an iMac as a monitor for my PC if I were to buy one?
View 24 Replies View RelatedMy computer was acting slow so I ran Tech Tool. It came up with various Volume errors but they were all fixed. I noticed that this computer was formatted as Mac OS Extended but NOT Journaled like the other two in our office. I was unable to add Journaling with either Disk Utility or Tech Tool. Both cases said that "Journaling failed" or "unable to add journaling". I believe I used to have journaling because I often use Onyx for repairing disk permissions and various other processes and this was the first time that I encountered the error "Not possible to verify the start-up volume because it is not journaled". I ran the Apple Hardware Check and the Hard drive is fine. So, after trying the previous mentioned utilities again to try and "journal", I decided to perform an Archive & Install. I am in the process of updating the OSX software, but I noticed the HD still says Format: Mac OS Extended...Hmmmm. Can anyone shed any light on this problem?
PowerMac 2x2.66Dual-Core Intel Xeon
OSX 10.5.8
5Gb memory
232 GB hard drive with
External LaCie HD connected
I've got an external HD. The first part is formatted to NTFS. The second part was formatted to FAT32. I plugged it in via Firewire and went to erase it to a journaled filesystem. It did something and left the drive unmounted. I could only format it to FAT32. Any ideas why I can't format it to journaled? I want to backup my user dir.
Edit: Tried another drive. 2 fat32 partitions. I tried to format the first and it didn't work. Formats to FAT32 well enough.
So, I am in the process of attempting to partition my disc so that I can boot windows XP.
Know that I am in no way even a capable mac user, so I might be a bit slow... sorry.
During the partitioning process, using boot camp, I get a message saying that I need to reformat my disc so that it is a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) disc. So, I go to my Disc Utility, and it says it already is a Mac OS extended bla bla bal. So, my question is
Why will it not let me partition, and do I really need to reformat my everthing eventhough it already is in the format it wants to be in?
I currently have a mac and a windows pc, and need to transfer files between these two computers.
My Harddisk was formatted to Mac OS Extended and can someone guide me how to format it to NTFS since Windows cant recognize my harddisk?
I just called Apple about an iPod issue. When he told me that my iPod's Apple Care expired, I gave him my Mac Pro SN, and he helped with the iPod issue as a courtesy. So while on the topic, I thought to request an extension of coverage for my Mac Pro system (about $5k worth of hardware).
He told me that Apple Care cannot be extended. "So you just have to buy new stuff, huh?" I asked. He quietly replied, "Yes."
I cannot imagine having to buy $5k plus new hardware just to keep my equipment covered. Wow. Did I misunderstand him? Does anyone need some editing work done.
I would like to project say a movie (Netflix) from my IMac to my TV, and at the same time use my computer to do work. I understand that this is called Extended Display. I know I go to:
System Preference
Display
Arrangements
I see the two blue boxes, put them side by side, open Netflix and cannot figure out how to go from there

I'm not using the max settings for this monitor because iMac only allows me to use the 1680x1050. Im using the Apple mini display port to VGA adapter.
this monitor is a Samsung 1920x1080 1080p monitor Series 30 B2230.
its displaying analog and i want digital.
how can i get the most out of my 2nd monitor
I have a 27 iMac, and a 22 inch Viewsonic as the second monitor.
The second monitor is just not bright. I have used another monitor as a second monitor as well. Both are just not bright enough to suit me.
I have fiddled with the brightness controls, to no avail.
Is that a generic problem with second monitors?
They just don't get enough juice or something?
Would another brand monitor help?
I am very untechnical so much of what I have read on this matter is above my head, but in simple language, if I buy a new MAc Book Pro is there any way that I can use the 21" screen on my 2005 iMAc OS X as a monitor? I asked someone at Apple Store and was told that though later models were fully compatible, for one that old I would need special software, but he couldn't say what. An earlier thread posted last year that I didn't fully understand suggests that I don't need software.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI had a quick question regarding a mod I'm considering with a G4 iMac 17". Basically, I want to dismantle the original machine and make a new box to connect to the G4's arm and display. However, I remember reading somewhere that the G4's display used some type of proprietary connector and that this would be impossible. Can anyone who has more knowledge on this than me let me know if I can do this? Soldering is not a problem if needed.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am seriously considering the possibility of using the 27in iMac as an external monitor with my MBP when I am home and need the extra monitor space. That would also allow my family to use the iMac when I am away at work or out of town. Since my MBP has a Mini DisplayPort, it should be as easy as connecting the MDP from the laptop to the MDP on the back of the iMac and then connecting the USB for audio? However if the iMac is turned on, how can I use the monitor without the actual computer running at the same time?
