It works for a while, then just doesnt continue its backups. Just says Preparing backup and nothing else, for hours!Have tried wiping out starting again, but give it a couple of weeks and back to the start.

I currently backup my macbook pro using time machine. I am planning on doing a clean install of snow leopard so I can get rid of all the crap I've downloaded on my machine. haha.
Can I use my old time machine backup without it creating a new database to add to? I'd like to be able to go back in time and get those files from my previous installation while adding my new backups from my clean install.
Is that possible? How do I ensure that when I go to do this it doesn't delete my old backups?
So I thought maybe I just needed to tell Time Machine to use that harddrive again. I went into preferences, and selected "change disk," and then picked my external HD again.
It made a new backup, though. Now, when I go into my backups.backupdb folder, I see two folders, one is "XXXXXXX MacBook Pro 15"" and the other is "XXXXXXX MacBook Pro 15" 2"
I have just purchased a Toshiba Stor.E Slim hard drive, which I do not require for Time Machine back ups. Should I use the Tuxera NTFS driver, or should I format the hard drive for Mac? Is any benefit over formatting vs using the driver? I pretty much use Macs all the time, but there may be rare occasions when it would be useful to hook up to a PC.
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Time Machine has been making the usual regular backups for a few months onto my Time Capsule. I just found that all the backups prior to about a week ago have vanished. It's not a disaster (I think) as I assume that the current backups reflect what's on my iMac (I haven't had to delete files from it yet).
Where did they go? Why did they go?
A possible connection: My TC is 500GB; my iMac 1TB. I recently put extra files for temporary use onto the iMac hard drive - Time Machine said (in effect) 'that's too much, try removing certain folders from the backup'. I excluded said folder and things seemed okay, but it would be at around the time I did that that my old backups have gone.
Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem with the Time Machine. I bought a 500gb Time Capsule last July and it has been running perfectly until a few days agp. I noticed that all my backups were no where to be seen (when entering Time Machine on my MBP) and that it was doing a full backup.. The backup took the guts of 36 hours.
I've come home today to find that all backups are gone again and it is doing another full backup!!!Any ideas what is wrong here?
Is it possible to create a partition on TimeCapsule assigned for TimeMachine (let's say 40%) and the rest for normal hard-drive usage?
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy setup is TimeCapsule (router/base station) running in 2.4 G mode, 2 widows laptops in G mode, and a older Airport Express 'G' standard. Today, I would say the network between the TimeCapsule is OK. I have a emac connected running tiger and it surfs alright but downloads are just slow (10k/sec downloads). Streaming itunes music works OK, but just forget about video podcasts.
My laptops can all surf OK to, but again the WiFi is not great.Somedays however nothing seems to work, iTunes is very glitchy (rebuffering every 5-20 seconds), And surfing is just painful. Yet upstairs plugged into the router the net is up and everything is good.
Now I work from home a lot, so I know using the microwave interferes with the G network. But these problem just seem to happen and it's either a OK day or everything just sucks. Short of spending the time and effort of going to 'N', how will I know what the cause of these problems are?
My Timecapsule is upstairs in the Hall, the house is open concept maybe max 50' between devices my Signal / Noise is -60/-90 most times. I'm also thinking to going with the powerline modems.
If you have a TimeCapsule that is currently backing up one MBP using TimeMachine, can you attach an external USB drive and then have a second MBP backup to that drive with TimeMachine?

I have been backing up my two computers (MAC desktop and MAC laptop) in 10.5.8 for the past six months without any problems. I recently had to reboot my Linksys router and subsequently had to reset my Time capsule. I had no problem connecting and backing up my laptop. However, I received the following error when I try to connect my MAC desktop to my backup disk: OSStatus error -6602 I went ahead and erased the entire disk and still receive this error.

I have a Macbook Pro, Power Mac G4, and my girlfriend's Dell. I want to put my iTunes Library on my TimeCapsule so when I'm at home I have access from all the computers. But i also have a copy of my library on my LaCie Rugged to save space on my MBP, not to mention the copy of the library on my iPod. Is there an easy way to sync my iTunes Library on my iPod, my portable HD, and TimeCapsule?

Common workarounds are: a second USB drive attached to TC or open TC and re-partition the internal drive.
As a dirty hack, I created a disk image on TC's hard-disk and I mount it via an AppleScript. The concept is the same as Loopback devices in Linux or Solaris except for the fact that disk files cannot be shared among multiple users at the same time.
I set up my time capsule using the wizard that apple provided. I have one SSID set up and wpa pw. I can use both Iphones (802.11g) and m macs (802.11n). Since they both work (With old TC, iphone would not see it because I set it to N only) am I running the most efficient way? View 11 Replies View RelatedI have a strange issue with my TimeCapsule (firmware version 7.4.2). The TimeCapsule is connected to my router, an AVM FRITZ!Box 7140, via an ethernet cable, and I connect my MacBook Pro wirelessly with the Time Capsule. Every few hours or so (but sometimes once in every 10 minutes), the light on the TimeCapsule blinks yellow for about 10 seconds, and during that time the MacBook Pro looses connection to the internet. My best guess is that the TimeCapsule somehow looses its own internet connection.
Two more details: the TimeCapsule is in Bridge Mode, and I do not see any relevant entries in AirPort Utility's logs...
My TimeCapsule drops the WiFi signal every 10 minutes or so for about 10 seconds; the light is blinking yellow during that time, and then it comes back to everything ok.
The TC is in Bridge Mode behind my router. I can connect to the internet via the router all the time - no connection lags there, it's just the TimeCapsule that stops the connection. No entries in it's logs, though.
I'm running 10.6.2, and the TimeCapsule is on 7.4.2 (same issue on 7.3.2 and 7.4.1).
As it is, it basically kills iChat and Skype on top of it's impact on web browsing and the like.
I just have a question about moving iTunes music to a new computer.
Okay, I'm planning on getting a new iMac in September (It will be my first Mac) and I want to bring over some, but not all, of my iTunes library on my old PC to the Mac. I want to know if, after I move all the music I want to to my new computer, can I continue using the same iTunes account I did on my PC (It's my whole families account), but also get any songs anyone buys on the old computer to the Mac by just logging in? Also, is it possible to send all of the music I buy on the Mac to the PC by using the same account? The reason I want to share music is because my brother and I like a lot of the same music and I don't want to have to keep burning the songs he buys on a disc so I can put them on my Mac.
So my question is, can I use the same account I use on my PC on my Mac? And will any songs that are bought on the PC using the same account as the Mac automatically be on the Mac? I'm sorry if I'm not very clear, I just can't think of any way to explain this better.
Upon shutdown I am asked if I want to abort installation. What program is doing this. How do I find it to get rid of it?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI was doing a 7-Pass Erase of a hard drive that I had switched out of my MBP. During the process, the USB cable connecting my hard drive to my MBP got disconnected. Now, whenever I connect this external drive to my MBP, it doesn't show up in the desktop or under disk utiltiy. How can I can continue the process of erasing and formatting the drive? What do I have to do in order for OS X to recognize it?

Now I want to continue using the backup disk with about 6 months worth of backups on, but it wants to start again saying that there's not enough space for the initial backup. I can't see any way around this in the TM help, but I don't want to start afresh and delete all those old backups. Surely there's a way of making Time Machine think the computer is the old one?

It starts correctly and the countdown works till the last step. When it arrives to the screen "less then a minute remaining" it freeze and i cannot go on.
it already happened 5 times.
the two mac are connected with an ethernet cable and i changed the settings of both to have the screen and the memory always on.
I already checked and repaired the two mac without any improvement in the procedure.
