Oct 21, 2010So I've been thinking about how i am going to be using my new MBA as my main machine for a couple of months and i currently use an external monitor with it.
The MBA is advertised to run an external, such as an ACD.
I jut looked at the ports and i find it really strange that the MagSafe connector is on the left, but the mini display port is on the right... Now you will have cables on both sides? How does this work with the set of MagSafe + display port + USB in an ACD? I don't think they are long enough to go around? Or would you have to plus in the other MagSafe and just use the right side for display port and USB. That is silly though.

OS X :: Unable To Open Ports For The Program Transmission
Mar 31, 2009 I got my first iMac last week so I'm a newbie to OSx, however I've come across something.I've not been able to find an answer to via a search engine.I have a port open for the program 'Transmission' in my router's settings. I've tried several, and I've followed several different guides on how to do this, and yet it always tells me that the port is closed. Now, I know Mac has like infinitely better security than Windows does, but does it also mean that all the ports are going to be closed all the time? I have no idea, so I thought I'd ask here. It's a Netgear router, and I've followed a specific guide on it via. I've allowed the program to go through the Firewall too.

Aug 22, 2014For security reasons I would like to have as few open TCP ports as possible on my iMac, leaving open only those that I feel are worthwhile having enabled. How can I go about to
a) identify which TCP ports are currently open on the system
b) identify the processes that have opened the ports and understand the origin and purpose of those process
c) disable the processes that have ports open, if I feel that there is no good reason for having them open

Jan 15, 2009My setup is TimeCapsule (router/base station) running in 2.4 G mode, 2 widows laptops in G mode, and a older Airport Express 'G' standard. Today, I would say the network between the TimeCapsule is OK. I have a emac connected running tiger and it surfs alright but downloads are just slow (10k/sec downloads). Streaming itunes music works OK, but just forget about video podcasts.
My laptops can all surf OK to, but again the WiFi is not great.Somedays however nothing seems to work, iTunes is very glitchy (rebuffering every 5-20 seconds), And surfing is just painful. Yet upstairs plugged into the router the net is up and everything is good.
Now I work from home a lot, so I know using the microwave interferes with the G network. But these problem just seem to happen and it's either a OK day or everything just sucks. Short of spending the time and effort of going to 'N', how will I know what the cause of these problems are?
My Timecapsule is upstairs in the Hall, the house is open concept maybe max 50' between devices my Signal / Noise is -60/-90 most times. I'm also thinking to going with the powerline modems.

May 25, 2010I have been backing up my two computers (MAC desktop and MAC laptop) in 10.5.8 for the past six months without any problems. I recently had to reboot my Linksys router and subsequently had to reset my Time capsule. I had no problem connecting and backing up my laptop. However, I received the following error when I try to connect my MAC desktop to my backup disk: OSStatus error -6602 I went ahead and erased the entire disk and still receive this error.

Mar 10, 2009I have a Macbook Pro, Power Mac G4, and my girlfriend's Dell. I want to put my iTunes Library on my TimeCapsule so when I'm at home I have access from all the computers. But i also have a copy of my library on my LaCie Rugged to save space on my MBP, not to mention the copy of the library on my iPod. Jan 3, 2010I wanted to store files on a Time Capsule that is also a Time Machine target. Problem is that Time Machine eats up all the space with time.
Common workarounds are: a second USB drive attached to TC or open TC and re-partition the internal drive.
As a dirty hack, I created a disk image on TC's hard-disk and I mount it via an AppleScript. The concept is the same as Loopback devices in Linux or Solaris except for the fact that disk files cannot be shared among multiple users at the same time.

Since they both work (With old TC, iphone would not see it because I set it to N only) am I running the most efficient way? Nov 7, 2009I have a strange issue with my TimeCapsule (firmware version 7.4.2). The TimeCapsule is connected to my router, an AVM FRITZ!Box 7140, via an ethernet cable, and I connect my MacBook Pro wirelessly with the Time Capsule. Every few hours or so (but sometimes once in every 10 minutes), the light on the TimeCapsule blinks yellow for about 10 seconds, and during that time the MacBook Pro looses connection to the internet. My best guess is that the TimeCapsule somehow looses its own internet connection.
Two more details: the TimeCapsule is in Bridge Mode, and I do not see any relevant entries in AirPort Utility's logs...
Hardware :: Won't Work With TimeCapsule / Dropping WiFi Signal
Jan 24, 2010My TimeCapsule drops the WiFi signal every 10 minutes or so for about 10 seconds; the light is blinking yellow during that time, and then it comes back to everything ok.
The TC is in Bridge Mode behind my router. I can connect to the internet via the router all the time - no connection lags there, it's just the TimeCapsule that stops the connection. No entries in it's logs, though.
I'm running 10.6.2, and the TimeCapsule is on 7.4.2 (same issue on 7.3.2 and 7.4.1).
As it is, it basically kills iChat and Skype on top of it's impact on web browsing and the like.

I've run Onyx, I've downloaded a utility that lets me set time machine to run once a day instead of every hour, but I'm still not happy with some of the slowdowns I get. So, my question is what will give me the best performance bump?:
1 - Clean install of 10.5
2 - Add more RAM (currently I only have the 1GB it came with)
3 - Upgrade to 10.6
4 - Something else I'm not considering

Jul 18, 2010I just started running windows 7 on my MacBook Pro [late 2008 Unibody]. I just read that Boot Camp 3.1 fixed a lot of the issues i'm having [messy trackpad, performance issues]. However, that update only comes after upgrading to Snow Leopard [I'm running Leopard on the Mac side].
Is upgrading to Snow Leopard the only way I can have access to these improved drivers?
Moreover, will this upgrade require a reinstall of Windows?

Apr 17, 2012I am starting to do more and more projects recently everything from illustrations, 3d motion graphics, video work, compositing etc... The laptop seems to be doing okay but I know there is room for improvement. I'm definitely going to max out my ram to 8gb. I'm thinking of doing this option bay thing here [URL].
And putting in a ssd as the main drive and keeping the 750 gb for storage purposes. That or possibly just upgrading the ram and the hard drive to something higher than 5400rpm. Should I just start with ram upgrade, should I just upgrade the hard drive to something with higher rpd or go solid state. Also what brands do you recommend?

Oct 22, 2008With an influx of Dolby Digital enhanced HD content making its way to the iTunes store, and subsequently Apple TV, Apple is reportedly working on an update to QuickTime that will improve support for 5.1 channel audio. People familiar with the matter say the Cupertino-based electronics maker tapped its vast developer community on Tuesday to begin testing versions of QuickTime 7.6 for Windows, as well as both Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.
The pre-releases, which reportedly carried build number A26, ranged in size from about 20MB to over 60MB, but were consistent in that they delivered the same series of enhancements requiring evaluation. In particular, those familiar with the software say Apple has requested that developers test the release extensively with multi-channel encoded audio tracks that feed unique content to each surround sound channel. Developers were also asked to put some weight on MPEG-1 playback and conversions, as well as encoding and playback of audio tracks in the AAC and Apple Lossless formats.
QuickTime 7.6 is one of only a handful of remaining updates planned for Apple's existing QuickTime architecture before the company turns the majority of its focus to QuickTime X -- a complete overhaul to the media software with optimized support for modern audio and video formats that should result in extremely efficient playback.[URL]
