View 11 Replies View RelatedI am setting up a new iMac for my parents and since I'm a noob to macs myself (had one for only a few months now) I was wondering what's the best way to set up user accounts. I need to create two accounts so ma/pa can log in and access their own settings, look and feel etc. They are moving from windows XP where they had their own user profiles (dad would leave his desktop littered with icons while mom kept hers nice and clean) so I need to keep two profiles otherwise this would confuse them. I guess my most important questions are:
1. Should I create a separate admin account first when setting up the iMac then create the addition two accounts, or just create two with one of them being an admin. I intend to put something like LogMeIn on there so I can remote in to do any maintenance for them, install apps etc.
2. Dad uses AOL mail and Mom uses Yahoo. I would like to setup Mail so that they can access their emails without using the web mail apps. Question: When the mail accounts are setup are they only seen when logged in under each user profile? In other words, will Dad only see his email in Mail then when Mom logs in she'll see her email etc. or will they both see each other's mail?
I have a weird thing going on.. I live in a home with 3 macs 3 iphones and a ipad. Our router is an Time Capsule. The weirdest thing happens though. At a given time it seems like only some of the computers can get internet. They all can connect to time capsule, but it is broadcasting an actually internet signal to only some of the devices. Which ones get the signal is totally random to. Does anyone have an idea of what's going on?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI just wanted to add a sharing only user for my girlfriends new MacBook that she could use to connect to a shared Time Machine Volume. If I add a new standard user, this user can connect to my server via finder (connect as...) and see the shared drives. If the same user tries to connect to the Time Machine Backup Volume via the settings dialog, it receives an error message (OSStatus-error 5). If I add a sharing only user, this user cannot connect via finder or Time Machine (same error).
The clients console states the following error message:
/System/Library/CoreServices/NetAuthAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/NetAuthAgent[2471] AFP error -5018 mapped to EIO
Today when we started trying to add users to our server (we use it only for afp access at this time), we noticed that new users belonging to a group "storage" were unable to login from client machines via afp (clients both 10.7.2 and 10.6.8). Â
When we tried editing the users accounts to change which groups they belonged to, it would appear in workgroup (and server preferences) that the changes would take but there was still no access.Â
As a test case, we modified an existing user who had no issues logging in to belong to a diffenent group and have different sharepoint access. The changes looked good in workgroup and server prefs, but when the user logged in, he was only able to acces his old sharepoint and not the new one (and since his permissions to the old were removed, he shouldn't have access to that sharepoint).Â
Also, for some reason users cannot be deleted within workgroup manager any more. The login used was the diradmin account.

I am currently am MBA student and must create projects using power point/ keynote, very often. Many of the power points/ keynotes created by students are informative but lack the ability to hold an audience’s attention (boring). Since I have this wonderful Macbook pro, I would like to create a dynamic keynote presentation which would include clips of audio and video files (I already know about converting keynote to power point). The only problem is, the videos I want to use in the keynote presentation are not able to be manipulated in iMovie (due to their format), and if they where able to be manipulated in iMovie, I’m not sure that PC users would be able to properly view them.
What video format (including embedded audio) is able to be viewed and heard by both OSX Lion users and Windows users?  If this is possible, can anyone suggest a safe application that I can purchase from the apple app store that will allow me to convert video files (including embedded audio) so that it can be viewed by both Lion and PC users? Preferably one that does not need access to the internet in order to convert the files ( I’m on the go allot and use an air card for internet access), but I will take it if this is the best option. If the app store does not have this type of application, is there a place that I can download a safe one?Â

View 3 Replies View RelatedMy setup is TimeCapsule (router/base station) running in 2.4 G mode, 2 widows laptops in G mode, and a older Airport Express 'G' standard. Today, I would say the network between the TimeCapsule is OK. I have a emac connected running tiger and it surfs alright but downloads are just slow (10k/sec downloads). Streaming itunes music works OK, but just forget about video podcasts.
My laptops can all surf OK to, but again the WiFi is not great.Somedays however nothing seems to work, iTunes is very glitchy (rebuffering every 5-20 seconds), And surfing is just painful. Yet upstairs plugged into the router the net is up and everything is good.
Now I work from home a lot, so I know using the microwave interferes with the G network. But these problem just seem to happen and it's either a OK day or everything just sucks. Short of spending the time and effort of going to 'N', how will I know what the cause of these problems are?
My Timecapsule is upstairs in the Hall, the house is open concept maybe max 50' between devices my Signal / Noise is -60/-90 most times. I'm also thinking to going with the powerline modems.
How can I open ports from my TimeCapsule to improve the use of my PS3?

I have been backing up my two computers (MAC desktop and MAC laptop) in 10.5.8 for the past six months without any problems. I recently had to reboot my Linksys router and subsequently had to reset my Time capsule. I had no problem connecting and backing up my laptop. However, I received the following error when I try to connect my MAC desktop to my backup disk: OSStatus error -6602 I went ahead and erased the entire disk and still receive this error.

But i also have a copy of my library on my LaCie Rugged to save space on my MBP, not to mention the copy of the library on my iPod. Common workarounds are: a second USB drive attached to TC or open TC and re-partition the internal drive.
As a dirty hack, I created a disk image on TC's hard-disk and I mount it via an AppleScript. The concept is the same as Loopback devices in Linux or Solaris except for the fact that disk files cannot be shared among multiple users at the same time.
I set up my time capsule using the wizard that apple provided. I have one SSID set up and wpa pw. I can use both Iphones (802.11g) and m macs (802.11n). Since they both work (With old TC, iphone would not see it because I set it to N only) am I running the most efficient way? Network utility shows macs connected at 270 Mbit/s and G devices at 54 Mbit/s. The gizmodo review says that they show show as 2 separate access points? [URL:..]
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a strange issue with my TimeCapsule (firmware version 7.4.2). The TimeCapsule is connected to my router, an AVM FRITZ!Box 7140, via an ethernet cable, and I connect my MacBook Pro wirelessly with the Time Capsule. Every few hours or so (but sometimes once in every 10 minutes), the light on the TimeCapsule blinks yellow for about 10 seconds, and during that time the MacBook Pro looses connection to the internet. My best guess is that the TimeCapsule somehow looses its own internet connection.
Two more details: the TimeCapsule is in Bridge Mode, and I do not see any relevant entries in AirPort Utility's logs...
My TimeCapsule drops the WiFi signal every 10 minutes or so for about 10 seconds; the light is blinking yellow during that time, and then it comes back to everything ok.
The TC is in Bridge Mode behind my router. I can connect to the internet via the router all the time - no connection lags there, it's just the TimeCapsule that stops the connection. No entries in it's logs, though.
I'm running 10.6.2, and the TimeCapsule is on 7.4.2 (same issue on 7.3.2 and 7.4.1).
As it is, it basically kills iChat and Skype on top of it's impact on web browsing and the like.
My wife and I decided that multiple accounts were a pain for various reasons. So, I was going to do a fresh install of SL, and just have one user.
I'm thinking that I cannot do a time-machine backup since it will maintain the current file/permissions structure. Should I just copy my files over to an external hard drive (exporting both of our bookmarks and my mail files) and drag them back? I'll be doing a clean install of SL so I will be re-installing all applications (I don't have many applications).
I tried to find the right host for my new business' website, and saw that iPowerWeb were Mac users. I was happy with the prices, etc, but now I can't send email because there is all kinds of spam being reported from my web server's IP address. The company is supposedly trying to 'fix' the problem, but in the meantime, 'spam cop' and AOL and Yahoo are bouncing my emails. Maybe it's a virus on the server, but I thought they used Macs? Anyway, does anyone have recommendations on dealing with this, or finding a better host, or any tales to share?

This is a family computer, so that equates out to myself, my wife, and three kids. After I installed the software (I have the administrator account), I logged into the other users area and the software that I installed is not available to them. How do I push the software install out to them?

Me and my future wife both like to play WoW. I know you can open multiple instances of WoW with separate accounts, but what I need to know is can I set up my dual monitor setup to act as if it is two separate computers with 2 keyboards and 2 mice so we can play together without having to purchase a whole second computer? I'm willing to buy another GFX card if I have to along with the second mouse and keyboard since that would still be cheaper then buying another computer.
