Can I close my computer and still continue doing a back up?

My computer keeps stalling and rotating beachball won't allow me to move forwards or backwards. Ultimately I need to turn off the power. I have tried resetting the PRAM and SMC but neither seems to help for too long.Â

I recently changed MBPs and restored from Time Machine. Now I want to continue using the backup disk with about 6 months worth of backups on, but it wants to start again saying that there's not enough space for the initial backup. I can't see any way around this in the TM help, but I don't want to start afresh and delete all those old backups. Surely there's a way of making Time Machine think the computer is the old one?

Currently if I try waking the computer with the keyboard or mouse, it wakes up for about five seconds before going back to sleep. Is there any way around this or do i just have to keep the iBook Open?

My girlfriend had her iPhone 5 sent in to repair the sleep/wake button and have the battery replaced, and before we left I made a full back up to her MacBook Pro. A few days later the MacBook won't boot up and only displays a blank grey screen. I took the MacBook into the Apple store since this is the only way to restore her photos and music and the Genius diagnosed it as a Logic Board failure and as it is out of warranty, would be quite expensive to fix. If I mounted the hard drive to an external enclosure, is it possible to pull the backup files and restore her phone with a laptop running windows?

I want to verify if Migration Assistant will restore a backup from NAS drive to a new computer. I just got a WD My Book Live Duo NAS drive which supports Time Machine backups for Lion (and Snow Leopard). Unlike backups in Snow Leopard and the WD My Book World Edition (white light), the new NAS drive creates a sparsebundle the first time a backup is initiated. When I open Time Machine, a single volume for my backup appears. I have 3 Macbooks backing up to this drive but when I open Time Machine on any computer, only the backup created for that computer is shown. This raised a question for me that if my computer dies, how do I restore the backup from the NAS drive to the new computer? Is this what Migration Assistant will do? What are the limitations? Does the new computer have to have the same IP address as the old computer? Can I select what gets restored? Â

Trying to set up a new Macbook Air with migration assistant using a Time Machine backup of an old computer on a Time Capsule. Time Machine on the old computer shows the backup. However, Migration Assistant says that there is no volume and will not recognize the backup. What should I do?

what the difference is between the commands 'close window' and 'close all windows'? They seem to me to both have the same effect. In my earlier version of Safari, if I opened a new web page, it just replaced the earlier one, now though the new pages just keep accumulating. T

Unlocking my external hard drive crashes my computer. It was encrypted by Time Machine (and I think that means it used FileVault because the unlock window has the FileVault icon). Â
There's a prompt to unlock the hard drive as soon as I plug it in but when I press the Unlock button my computer crashes. Â
I've tried different user accounts, safe mode, disk utility, recovery mode, different USB cables and different USB ports all with the same problem. As soon as I press enter on the password prompt the system crashes. If I type the wrong password it denies me so I know the password is correct. Â
The drive is in a SATA to USB dock but unfortunately I don't have another one to test with. Other drives work just fine in this dock.Â
The data recovery software I tried is useless because all the data is encrypted .Â

My friend has an Apple MacBook 13.3-inch 2GHz (model number: A1181). When I boot up the computer, the screen is gray and does not proceed to show the Apple logo. The MacBook continues to show the gray screen for quite a while. What can I do to identify some of the problems with this computer? The one caveat: I am in La Habana, Cuba and there is no concept of an Apple Store or Mac support.

I have a Drobo attached (via firewire) to my Mac Pro, with one partition dedicated for Time Machine backups. Is it possible to backup other Macs on my network to this Time Machine, or can only the Mac Pro use it?All Macs are using SL 10.6.3. I mount the Drobo (and separate TM partition) on every Mac at login, and both show up as eligible drives to use as TM backup destinations, under TM preferences. However, if I select either drive, and initiate the backup, after a few moments it tells me the "backup disk is not available".

is it possible to maintain backups one computer on 2 time capsules?i would like to keep one TC at work and one at home, as i do alot of work at both places.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI just got my replacement macbook pro, and copied all my data over to it. When I went to set up Time Machine, I noticed that by default, it wants to create a new backup sparse bundle. Is there any way to either use the prior one or merge the old and new ones together? Rant:I find it crazy that getting a new computer means losing 18 months worth of backups. I called Applecare about this, and their responce was create a new backup and then if you need to you can connect to the old backup in a read only mode. The guy on the phone made it out like this is the best way to do it, new computer - new history of backups.
Why is this better? I mean, the time machine file i was using was 550GB of data. My home folder is 400GB of data. So that means to backup anything new (which for arguments sake, we'll say is 15GB) I also have to backup the other 385GB. So now instead of the total backup size being 565GB it is 950gb - 385GB double backed up.This seems like a very amateurish method of implementation, as if the easiest way to program the backups was new computer new backup. The path of least resistance is not the method of best backup solution.
How do I get the backup arrow on my computer???
