I have a 500GB external hard drive. I would like a 250GB FAT32 Partition for Windows on boot camp and a 250GB Mac OS extended partition for TM. However, I don't want OS X to recognize the FAT32 partition when I plug it in. How would I do that?
View 5 RepliesI have Windows Xp and Windows 7 on two different hard drives in my Mac Pro. Windows 7 had been working fine, but I needed XP to run some older programs that 7 couldn't do. I have been working in XP some time now but when I try to boot from the Windows 7 drive it just reverts to the XP one. Even when I click on the Windows 7 drive to make it the start up drive it still goes to XP. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

When I say freezes I mean, it locks up my entire computer to the point where my only option is to do a hard restart with the power button. Is there any way to get it to partition my hard drive or use another program to do it?

Using Bootcamp in an attempt to create a 30GB partition, I got an error message saying that some files could not be moved, and so the partition failed. every time I start OSX, a box appears saying that the latest firmware for the EFI 1.4 or something has been successfully updated. Could it be related or is it something else?

I'm trying to install Windows on my brand new MBP using Bootcamp and I am hung up on a "No Bootable Device" error prior to installing Windows and after successful partitioning. I have updated everything I can think to update. The disk is a retail Windows XP with SP2. I have even tried reseating the battery. I can get back to OSX but would still like to install Windows rather than give up.

What I want to do is create a new partition (by taking space out of the mac side) to create a new drive that my current windows partition can see (as I understand you cant make an existing partition bigger so that would be my solution) This is just for the existing windows drive to store files on. Is that possible and would the current windows disk see the new drive? I just need it to because I have run out of room on the windows side. I am running more programs than I thought I would need to!

I'm resizing the Windows partition on a 2.2GHz 15" Macbook Pro. I deleted the partition using Boot Camp, but when I went back to repartition it, I get the error that states:
"The disk cannot be partitioned because some files cannot be moved. - Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume ..."
However, according to Disk Utility, there's only one partition on the drive, and it's correctly formatted. I'm not missing any hard drive space or anything. Is there any way to fix this without going through the hassle of reformatting my hard drive?
I have a Mac Mini and I am running Snow Leopard and BootCamp 3.0. I am trying to install Windows XP. I'm using BootCamp to partition the disk. I've tried with different sizes, the outcome was the same. After partitioning I can see the Bootcamp volume in Finder and on the desktop. Bootcamp then tells that I can start the installation. The Windows XP CD is in the drive. Restart follows. And then nothing but the gray screen. No installation starts. I have to shut down the computer and start it again.
This time I hold the option key and there is only the Mac OS volume! There is no sign from the BootCamp volume. After starting the computer again it doesn't boot from the Mac OS volume, there is the gray screen only, which means that the startup disk have been changed and that usually happens when you install windows with bootcamp - it changes the startup volume from Mac OS to the BootCamp volume, but still the BootCamp volume is not there. I've installed Windows XP with BootCamp several times. I know how it works. Installation starts automatically after the restart.
I was partitioning my Disk using BootCamp while trying to install Windows 7 on my MacBook (30GB partition) but my partitioning never ended. The stupid BootCamp got stuck so after one hour I had to turn off my MacBook. I even listened if the HD was working but nothing... The shut down was inevitable.
So I turned on my MacBook again and all seemed fine. That was until I checked my HD capacity! My HD was 30GB less than what I should normally have. Instead of 60GB FREE space I know had 30GB. So I thought that ok, BootCamp must have managed to make the partition even if the MacBook crashed and burned.
No, it hadn't. My 30GB have vanished! I also went to disk utility and used Partition to see if there was any space there but nothing. Disk Utility see my HD as a 250GB disk which is correct. Somehow that 30GB has been recognized as a big chunk of info on my HD so now I am missing 30GB.
It all started off when I installed windows 7 on my mac via bootcamp. It worked, but somehow Leopard didn't recognize the windows partition, and that all ended up in even more trouble, so I ended up reinstalling Leopard, thereby erasing everything on my hard drive.I have now reinstalled leopard, but somehow, Disk Utility can not start, everytime I open it, it says it had stopped working and that I can send an error report. Damn! I just need Disk Utility to recover my drive, so that bootcamp can make the partition, but it doesn't work!

I got a error that said i needed to restore my system, i do not have a external hard drive and i couldn't do that. Then i figured out what this error means:I read it has something to do with not having enough memory, where i have to defrag something, basically it was a long explanation but it made sense (I just deleted a 50GB file).So i was able to make a 5GB partition, and i'm like, "Ok, it works, ill try a 32". I just replaced my 160gb hard drive by cloning it to a new 640gb hard drive (I zeroed all data and formatted to mac os extended (journaled) beforehand).I wanted to make a 50gb partition for windows and I currently have 515gb free. I don't see how there's any fragmentation that could be stopping it since the cloning process should of defragged... Just to be safe though, I used idefrag and partitioning still fails.

Whenever i try to create a partition, the kernel crashes and i need to restart my whole computer, boot up from the OSX CD and then "Repair Disk" to get the lost hard drive space back. After all this I purchased a MacBook Pro and now, instead of buying another drive and also considering there's plenty of space on the one I already have, I was wondering if I could possibly partition half the drive to be used as a backup with Time Machine without touching the other half. I plugged in the drive to my Mac and opened Disk Utility. It says it is a NTFS file system (I suppose that's normal).

I have used bootcamp to partition my disk and install windows vista onto my uMB. Now I want to partition the disk again to create a tri boot setup where I can either install ubuntu or the dev preview of snow leopard (I haven't decided yet). Can I just do this with disk utility and shrink my OS X partition in order to create a new partition or will this cause problems with the disk? I would really like to not do a fresh install of OS X because I have had to do this twice to fix disk problems relating to bootcamp.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI'd like to partition my external HD into two parts: one for Time Machine and one for storing photos and other files so I can free up some space on my internal HD.
I've been using it out of the box for Time Machine for about a month now. I'm just wondering if I can partition it as it is with the backups on it already or do I have to wipe it clean, partition it, then start over with Time Machine? I would just like a 200 GB partition for Time Machine and the rest for storing data.
Also, Disk Utility is a little confusing. It has my external HD in there and then there is a "sub drive" (not sure the technical name.. sorry) under that? That's just drive that Time Machine made more or less? And every time I partition it, there will be a "sub drive" for each partition?
I'm the kind of person that would rather attempt trial and error before conceding to follow some step-by-step guide. But this time it cost me. I deleted my OSX partition and am now left with Windows XP. When I boot from my OSX install disk it eventually asks me where I would like to install the OS, but only offers me a choice of the (25gb) Windows partition. I see no options listed that how to create a partition at that point.
So I assume I need to create a partition from within Windows first. I went to Administrative Tools > Disk Management and found a list of several partitions. Two of them are around 200MB in size but the other two are ~25GB and ~125GB. The latter is obviously the remnants of my OSX partition but when I (right-)click on it the only option offered is to delete it.
I got the new HD in the 800mhtz Imac, but the guy that installed it said that he partitioned it for the OS. I have never heard of having to do this on a Mac. I have always just hit the "Go" button and put it on there. Will it cause any problems if it is truly partitioned?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of setting up my uni macbook pro (5,1) to triple boot OSX, Win7, and Ubuntu 9.04. Thus far I have bootcamped Windows 7 and am going to use diskutil to split my Macintosh HD partition into 2 partitions for the purpose of installing Ubuntu while keeping the BOOTCAMP partition intact.
The thing is, I've been running Diskutil for about 5 hours and it hasn't finished the partition split. I know it takes a long time for the partitioning to do it's job because all the data on the disk needs to be kept on the disk for the entirety of the operation and not go through RAM for caching. Basically, has diskutil has borked? Or does it usually take this long to do a similar operation?I'm working with a 320 Gb HD @5400rpm. Further, Both installs of Windos and OSX are relatively new. All software is up to date.
I have a 250 GB external I've been using for Time Machine since late 2007. I happened to check it today and it was nearly full~so I'm in that process of deleting some of the older data (that process is taking forever).
I would like to partition this external and use some space for iPhoto since my main HD is getting full. Is this a fool's mission? I can understand if I started from scratch but with a nearly full one is it possible?
I do have backup off site (Carbonite)~~maybe it would be easier to erase the external and start fresh?

I'm ordering my 13" MBP tonight and ordering the 500gb Momentus XT as well; I've never had a mac before/used bootcamp I was wondering if when you partition the hard drive for whatever other OS you are going to install (7 64b for me) do you also have to partition some of the flash memory or is the flash memory for all partitions?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI know that Partitioning a SSD won't matter in speed since there's no inner/outer rings to the platter. But is it possible for organizational purposes? Like if you want an OS partition, but then a different partition for files/temp things that you can format/erase all at once? I can't seem to get my system drive down to below 60 gigs, so the OWC 60gig SSD is just too small. But the 120 is way too big. So I was thinking of doing like an 80gig partition for my current OS/Apps and just SuperDuper it over and then have a 40gig partition where I put my most recent "heavy use" files, like work files and such.
Where I can change them in/out depending on what project is at the top of the hopper. That way, if I have 20 gigs of work files, I can use the SSD to store them and have other SATA drives backup/store the main storage. And then if a new project comes to the forefront, move the files from the SSD to the storage, and move the new projects to the SSD partition. And, I could set that 2nd partition to be the photoshop scratch too. And yes, I have triple redundant backups, so everything on the SSD or SATA drives would be backed up to 2 different places daily anyways.
