OS X :: Partitioning And Triple Booting?

I'm in the process of setting up my uni macbook pro (5,1) to triple boot OSX, Win7, and Ubuntu 9.04. Thus far I have bootcamped Windows 7 and am going to use diskutil to split my Macintosh HD partition into 2 partitions for the purpose of installing Ubuntu while keeping the BOOTCAMP partition intact.
The thing is, I've been running Diskutil for about 5 hours and it hasn't finished the partition split. I know it takes a long time for the partitioning to do it's job because all the data on the disk needs to be kept on the disk for the entirety of the operation and not go through RAM for caching. Basically, has diskutil has borked? Or does it usually take this long to do a similar operation?I'm working with a 320 Gb HD @5400rpm. Further, Both installs of Windos and OSX are relatively new. All software is up to date.

I managed to finally installed 3 OSes into my mac mini but not all in the same disk. I basically dual boot windows xp and windows 7 from internal disk and SL from external FW drive with another partition for data.
So far I have done this without installing bootcamp into my windows. I partitioned the internal drive with Disk Utility and formatted with NTFS-3G. I don't want to install via bootcamp as bootcamp may mess up my drive and render my windows unbootable. So I am trying to install all the drivers from SL DVD one by one. So far so good as I managed to install the Broadcom network driver and the Nvidia Graphic driver. Can you guys advice me on how to proceed at this stage? I basically copied all the drivers from my SL disk onto my wndows desktop and trying to retrieve each driver. But there are so many. Which do I install specific to mac mini.
If this is done correctly, when I press option key at startup, I am presented with windows and OSX. When I select windows, it will again give another option to either boot into windows xp or windows 7.Not sure if anyone has done this. But I have read many people doing triple boot on one internal HDD. Thought this is easier but you do need an external drive though.Any comments and advice on how to proceed to fully setup my triple boot?

I have Windows Xp and Windows 7 on two different hard drives in my Mac Pro. Windows 7 had been working fine, but I needed XP to run some older programs that 7 couldn't do. I have been working in XP some time now but when I try to boot from the Windows 7 drive it just reverts to the XP one. Even when I click on the Windows 7 drive to make it the start up drive it still goes to XP. Is there something I'm doing wrong?

I would like to triple boot my uMacbook Pro. I currently have Mac OSX and Windows XP SP3 installed on it. I would like to add another partition for Windows 7 (just want to try out 7 before making the real switch later on), but I found that when I try to run the boot camp assistant, it gave me no options to partition the drive further more, and only showed me to restore the drive back into one partition. How can I partition the already two partitioned drive into one more partition? Would I do this through disk utility? Or do I do it through Windows 7 installer?

Mac-mini, OS X Leopard: Suddenly my wife's Leopard Mac- Mini (monitor) screen shows a 'vibrating' display that is split into three distorted parts. I can see it is the Finder shown three times. Fixing Permissions does nothing. Is this a hardware or software problem?

I have 1 simple question. What is the best way to get a total of 3 screens with my MBP? I currently have dual screen with mini-display monitor and the laptop screen. I would like to have 2 24" monitors + the laptop screen for a total of 3 monitors. I know I can run 1 of the monitors through miniDP, but what about the other monitor? I have herd of those USB video cards that allow you to connect another monitor? Any advice? I want this to be "cost efficient" so nothing more that about 50$ if possible.

I know that you'd need at least 2 graphics cards to run the 3 monitors. Is there a way to play games using all 3 monitors (if the game supports it). I know that with Windows, you would just use software supplied with the video card and make the computer "think" that it's 1 big display. With OS X, is there any way I can play games at triple monitor resolutions? I am also open to Bootcamp ideas, but then don't you have the same problem again because you have multiple video cards instead of just one?

I've been trying to get this working with a 2 drive setup on my mid 2010 i7. The biggest issue I'm having is that the windows 7/Linux distros won't boot from an external usb cd drive with the 2nd drive installed. This works flawlessly with just one HDD and the normal SD installed. Refit is installed. The windows install gets stuck at "windows is loading files", it hangs while trying to load disk.sys. As for Linux, refit complains that apple's efi firmware does not well support legacy booting. Has anyone successfully booted win7/Linux from an external USB cd drive?

Since I'm experiencing some issues with my current setup (4870+GT120) I'd like to hear if the new cards work on 10.6.5 with at least two displays connected to it, and one of them in portrait mode. Ideally someone with three screens connected to a single card and two of them in portrait (on the DP outputs).

I've got rEFIt installed, and a semi-successful triple-boot system: Leopard, Vista 64-bit, and XP 32-bit (partition order; XP was installed before Vista). I've got only two issues with it, which might be related. First, rEFIt hasn't shown boot discs since XP was installed. Second, I can't boot into Vista directly; Vista installed BOOTMGR to the XP partition, and is using that; I can only chain-load, which is precisely what I was hoping to avoid by using rEFIt. If it's not possible to directly boot Vista, I'd just as soon uninstall rEFIt, but how do I know the XP partition will be the one that shows up when I press option at startup?

Well, my MacBook Pro arrives in a few days and I wanting to triple-boot OSX, XP and Ubuntu. It's got a 500GB hard drive so I'm wanting to split the partitions up into 250GB, 200GB, and 50GB. My new 27" i7 iMac is arriving this week, and I'm trying to get everything lined up for the great awakening. Here's my situation:
My wife will use this beauty for her work during the day, and will need to use a resource-intensive, windoze-specific genomic software program that is 32-bit only. I of course will also be on it, using mostly OS X but needing to run some windoze-specific applications myself, and I can go 64-bit. I *do* have VMware Fusion 3.0 ready to go, but I'd prefer to use it with the BootCamp partitions instead of as virtual machines because this is better for my backup situation. Also, a bootable external HDD is not an option at the moment, so there's that.
So, to my question: Can I triple-boot with Win7 32-bit and 64-bit? I've read this guide but it's for XP and Vista. I have reason to believe it's possible with adequate preparation, using Disk Utility to partition the disk right away and going from there. I'm just worried about unforeseen issues. I'm thinking if it works I will somehow boot into windows and then somehow be given the option of going into 32- or 64-bit. If it doesn't, I guess I might have to go the virtual route for my 64-bit'-ness.

Ever since Icloud, everytime I enter an event it doubles, or triples the event. This occurs even with all but one of the calendar types checked. I would love to just delete those other types of calendar because I dont need 5 types of calendars. Things were working great until Icloud dammit Steve lol

I want to know i want to load the latest ubuntu with it for a triple boot by redoing the windows partition will it get its own icon when you hold option to choose your hd or when you choose windows it will show grub or lilo the boot loaders for ubuntu

Call me crazy but are we all assuming the Nehalem Mac Pros can operate in triple channel mode based on the memory configurations suggested by Apple? I can't find anywhere on Apple's site or in the user manual that spells out the ability to run in triple channel mode. I know the integrated memory controller can operate in dual or triple channel mode. Being dual only would explain the number of memory slots. Can any owners of the new Mac Pros confirm triple channel operation? Or has anyone seen it documented one way or another by Apple? I'd love to be wrong...

I was just about to order Snow Leopard, but then it hit me. Could it screw up rEFIt and my triple booting-ness? I asked my friend who is also using rEFIt and they think it could mess things up. What's your opinion, will it do no harm, or will it? And if it does, should I still get Snow Leopard? It was a bit of a pain installing everything, and I've just finished installing 80GB of games onto my Windows partition, so obviously I don't want that getting wiped or unable to boot!

I set up a triple-boot system on my MBP (Early 2008) with OS X SL, ubuntu 9.10 and Windows 7 Home Premium. I have a 500GB Hard Drive, and allocated 100 GB for Mac OS X, 60 GB for Windows 7, 40 GB for ubuntu, and the remainder I formatted as FAT32 for storage to share between the three operating systems (to hold iTunes and iPhoto libraries, movies, etc).
I use rEFIt as my bootloader, and all three operating systems happily load whenever I choose them to. The problem lies with the FAT32 storage partition. OS X recognizes it quite nicely and I use it regularly. Windows and ubuntu, however, do not mount it. What's more, Windows Disk Manager identifies the space as unallocated space.

I bought a MacBook Pro 13" in August 2011. A few days ago, I started to get a triple alarm sound (beep, plus battery indicator light flashes three times) and the system freezes (no keyboard or trackpad input, screen stays on). The triple beep continues until I shut it off through the power button.

I'd like to partition my external HD into two parts: one for Time Machine and one for storing photos and other files so I can free up some space on my internal HD.
I've been using it out of the box for Time Machine for about a month now. I'm just wondering if I can partition it as it is with the backups on it already or do I have to wipe it clean, partition it, then start over with Time Machine? I would just like a 200 GB partition for Time Machine and the rest for storing data.
Also, Disk Utility is a little confusing. It has my external HD in there and then there is a "sub drive" (not sure the technical name.. sorry) under that? That's just drive that Time Machine made more or less? And every time I partition it, there will be a "sub drive" for each partition?

I'm the kind of person that would rather attempt trial and error before conceding to follow some step-by-step guide. But this time it cost me. I deleted my OSX partition and am now left with Windows XP. When I boot from my OSX install disk it eventually asks me where I would like to install the OS, but only offers me a choice of the (25gb) Windows partition. I see no options listed that how to create a partition at that point.
So I assume I need to create a partition from within Windows first. I went to Administrative Tools > Disk Management and found a list of several partitions. Two of them are around 200MB in size but the other two are ~25GB and ~125GB. The latter is obviously the remnants of my OSX partition but when I (right-)click on it the only option offered is to delete it.

I got the new HD in the 800mhtz Imac, but the guy that installed it said that he partitioned it for the OS. I have never heard of having to do this on a Mac. I have always just hit the "Go" button and put it on there. Will it cause any problems if it is truly partitioned?

I have done some research on triple boot systems, and it appears that a third OS must be run virtually, but all the information I came across was a few years old. Microsoft is running a deal right now on Windows 7 for students so I would like to pick up a copy and try it out.
Is it possible to run 3 operating systems through Boot Camp 3.0? I am not interested in running a virtual OS.

I ran some tests on my 2009 Quad Nehalem to try and determine what was up with the triple Vs dual memory "brouhaha".
I posted the results as a new thread because I think it will be useful information for a lot of quad owners, but it was originally going to be a reply to this thread: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=735845
Here we go. Tesselator suggested 3 tests that could show the differences in speed between triple and dual channel bandwidth.

So I did them, 10 times each. I could have gone on, but the results were very very stable after the first 2 attempts.
Set-up: a 40Mpx, 16bit image (8000*5000). First test it was simply filled white; second test: black; and third test a black to white gradient. I added a fourth test, using a real (photo) 12Mpx RAW image from my Nikon D300.
I created (took a while!) an action with 350 repetitions of "duplicate layer" and "delete layer", followed by a red fill to let me know the action was done. The same action was used in all four tests.
The computer was restarted before each of the four tests, which may explain the irregularities on the first 1-2 attempts. Nothing else but PS4 was launched.
The results are interesting:
We can clearly see that the simple white and black fills show a speed difference of around 10%.
We can also clearly see that this difference disappears when a more complex image is used. The use of more complex images represents a much more realistical use of PS.
To make things even more realistic, I also tested RetouchActions's speed test on my own 12Mpx image. I use nearly all of the operations of that action on a daily basis, so it's a lot more representative of the work I do on PS.
Here are the results:
The results are clear: 11% increase in performance using 8GB of ram (Vs 6GB) when working on a 12Mpx image.
Added info: number of page-outs after running the 10 test series (after about 45 minutes of intense PS work):
-17K when using 6GB (1.7K page-out avg).
-10K when using 8GB (1K page-out avg).
For me the results are definitive: unless I plan on working only with full black or full white images (not even black and white!), having 8GB is better, even when working on smallish 12Mpx files. I imagine the differences would have been even greater using bigger file sizes of actual complex images.
What would now be interesting: someone with a 2009MP Octo doing the same tests at 12GB and 16GB.
