I installed AirPort Extreme for my iMac to replace an old wireless router. Now my external LaCie 'Time Machine' backup drive doesn't show up in peripherals when I try to reinstall it. (It went away somehow) It only tries to lead me to the wireless Apple product.
View 4 RepliesI am running my Lacie 500gb (porsche design) wirelessly through an Apple Airport Extreme and accessing them on my Powerbook G4. Lacie is connected to AE through USB, and has 377gb worth of data, no partitions.What happened: I tried to put a very small .srt file on the hard drive, but it kept giving an error essage, "Cannot copy file blah blah... file name too long or contains characters unreadable" or something to that effect. After a number of attempts it FINALLY appeared to load.Problem: Now when I access my Lacie wirelessly all file and folder icons disappear after a millisecond, but the drive info still says 377gb used. If I connect to the Lacie through USB the icons are as they should be, except the problem .srt file only appears as the name with no icon. If I click on the .srt file that one file disappears, so I can't delete it, open it, or do file repair on it.

Current set upCable modem to Airport Extreme - hardwired to house PC. Wireless to Imac, G5 mac, xbox 360, ipad - all works with excellent signal and speed.Printer located on 2nd floor by Mac G5 and printed via wireless before airport extreme and will not print. There is no way we can set up the air port at the G5 with the printer or move the printer to airport extreme. Does the printer have to be USB connected to work - we just want to transmit to the wireless printer with no connection.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am experimenting with two drives connected to my new AirPort Extreme. The first is for Time Machine, has been working well. The second is the experiment. The second drive is a storage drive that is usually attached to my iMac and is included in the Time Machine backups of the iMac. My question is if I decide to keep the storage drive on the AirPort then what would be the best way to keep it backed up? Could I run Carbon Copy Cloner from my laptop or would that just be a big mess? The goal would be to backup the storage drive to the other drive connected on the AirPort Extreme. I can live with the storage drive on my iMac if it is felt that this is a bad idea... just would be nice to be able to access the drive without having to have the iMac on... maybe I need to buy a less power consuming Mac Mini to be used as a server.
View 1 Replies View Relatedi will be getting a 13inch MBP soon and i already have a Airport extreme base station and i was going to get a USB hard drive to plug into the AEBS and use to back up my new mac with time machine but i'm not sure if it's possible. Googling around i found a new story saying apple had updated the AEBS firmware to allow time machine back up but i check in my airport utility and didn't see the option. So has anybody done this before?

I set it up and did an initial backup using firewire.
I don't know how but I managed to get all subsequent backups to work wirelessly for 3 days.
Now they don't and its bugging the s..t out of me.
I purchased a LaCie Little Big Disk 200GB. It's an external HDD with two 2,5" 7200RPM hdd's paired as a raid 0 system.Great on paper, horribly risky in practice.So, *stupid me* started using this disk as a backup device for some important data. Of course the disk has started to malfunction. When I plug it in, there's this terrible clicking noise and it no longer mounts.I have already voided the warranty as I opened it up thinking/hoping it was a faulty connection.
View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a 1 TB LaCie Big Disk Extreme 2 that is actually made up of 2 500GB drives. It failed on me. I have most of it backed up but there are a few things I would like to recover. I tested another power cord and it didn't work. So I talked to a few people and they said that if I bought a new seagate controller board that matches my 500GB drives identically I would be able to get the data off one drive at a time. There is some good and some bad. When I tested the new controller board on each drive (one at a time only because I only have one new controller board) they both started up normally! Success I thought.. but no.. Both Leopard and XP said "drive needs to be formatted" or "initialized".

Im assuming this is somehow related to the drive spinning and whatnot, but the problem is it wont mount on the desktop, nor can i find any way to "reset" the hdd.When on, the blue light works just fine, it does not turn Orange or anything. The drive just clicks and wont do anything...

Well, my macmini does not recogize it anymore. I tried connecting it to my MBP and that does not recognize it. THe lacie drive has light that glows when it is turned on, but it looks like it is pulsing.

Simple question: Of the new features in the new AirPort Extreme Base Station, which of these could become available to the old AirPort Extreme Base Station via a software/firmware update? I have to think that at least some of the new features don't actually require new hardware. Just trying to figure out if I want to shell out $179 for a new AEBS when my current AEBS works pretty well as it is.
View 21 Replies View RelatedFirst, the drive kept triggering a "your external device may have been disconnected improperly" message. That despite repeated erasing of the disc and restarting of the set up a Time Machine backup usinig this 500GB USB2 drive with its own power supply. Finally, I placed the drive on its fronot panel and it stopped disconnecting. Then, it started the backup. It is now 9:30 in the morning. I started this backup at 9:30 last night. so far it has managed to accomplish 23.79 GB of a 64.45 GB back up.

I just got a time capsule and replaced my extreme with it then added my 2 expresses to the network. Was getting 28-33mbps download speeds using speedtest.net to test now i'm getting only 4-6mbps. WTH!!! Also the transfer rate for backing up my macbook to the tc drive is ridiculous!!!
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.
Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.
My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.
For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.
The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.
I have previously time machine backups for two macbook pros on same drive. However, I connect the drive to the airport extreme and although I see the drives and the backups, I can not access the files over Airport Extreme.

I want to avoid any conflicts with my old settings for my wireless network with my MBP. Should I uninstall the last version of Airport Utility?Is there anything else anyone would recommend before i install or connect the new hardware/software?

Just bought a new Airport Time Capsule 3TB for backup purposes and to use as the main router in my home (model number A1470 the latest tall one). I was originally using an AirPort Extreme (model number 1408 approx 6" square and 1' tall) for my main router. Â
I got the TC setup and putting out good wifi signal, but would like to take my Extreme and extend it off the TC to boost signal in other parts of my house, but having some difficulty. I searched the forums and found setup instructions to do this, but I get a message saying, "unexpected error. Try again." Well, tried again and still no luck.Â

Time machine is having problems backing up to my La Cie drive. It will start and then show the progress, but it stalls at a very low #(256 kb, for example).
Left it to do its stuff overnight and it never budged. Pulled this off of the console (after reading some other posts). Not sure if this is associated w/the problem, though.

I have two macbook pro's (wife and I both have one) and use it for my PS3 and Xbox 360. I started a new job and was given a free HP desktop (not my choice, but hey, it's free, so what can I say). The desktop is not wireless and I am not able to put my computer near the airport extreme because my TV already owns that territory. Today I bought the Airport express to use as a bridge (and other things in the future). I have plugged it in. I opened the airport utility using my macbook. It finds my extreme and my express. I select that I want to set up the express. I select that I want to set it up using an existing wireless network. I select my airport extreme. It tells me that it has to restart the express. I wait approximately 3 minutes. It then tells me that the settings to the express have been changed but it's not able to find it.
My main goal is to use the express as a bridge. I have the express plugged in beside the desktop and want to run an ethernet cable from the express to the desktop to allow for wireless capability.
I have a Macbook (white unibody) running Snow Leopard. I have a personal wireless network using an Airport Extreme and I have an external hard drive (WD) connected to the Airport Extreme. I use this hard drive for my Time Machine Back ups.
I just got back from a trip and tried to back up my time machine. I got the error that the back up disk is not available. I then tried to open the airport utilities.
It tells me that "Airport Utilities is unable to find any Airport Wireless devices". I find this doubly strange because I have no problem connecting to the internet on this wireless network which supposedly does not exist.

I bought the new airport extreme to extend the wifi range in my household and hoped to share a hdd. Upon my experience and reading the forums, the sharing hdd is not as easy as I thought. But that is not my issue at the moment.
My issue is with extending the network. A couple weeks of ago, I did the setup to connect the two airport extremes together (older round AE & new box AE) using aiport utility. It seemed to have work because the signal was stronger in a part of the house that usually had 0 to 1 bar.
But shortly after, the signal showed itself as inconsistent. The signal strenght is jumpy from 0 to full bars. And right now, I am sitting in a part of the house that used to have 0 bars and now, I get full bars. And yet my mbp cannot see the newer, closer in distance AE.
