Hardware :: JBL On Time - Possible To Get Remote For It?
Aug 23, 2007
My wife loves her JBL iPod dock, but she's wondering if its possible to buy a remote control for it? There appears to be a remote sensor on the dock itself but obviously only the Radial model seems to have a remote in the box.
I have a Mac at home. I would like to use Time Machine to backup my files to a linux server at a relative's house. For the sake of bandwidth, there are a few things that I would like to do:
1. Do the initial backup at my house. Since the initial backup would be 200+GB (I shoot photos in RAW), I would like to not surpass my bandwidth cap. Also, it would take a long, long time to transfer that much stuff over standard broadband connections. Supplemental backups should be no more than 1GB or so per week. 2. Be able to connect and disconnect the network drive/share on command. This will keep Time Machine from eating up time and bandwidth with hourly backups. (Although I guess that turning Time Machine on and off would have the same effect).
What do I need to do, to set this up? I am guessing that I will need to:
1. Setup a share on the linux server. (Not sure how to do this, but I am sure that I can figure it out with some research). 2. Connect my Mac to that share, mapped as a network drive. (How do I do this securely)? 3. Point Time Machine to the network drive, using a method like this [URL]
Is there a better solution for doing incremental backups over the Internet?
Yes this is yet another NAS thread. I've read a few of them over the past month, new/old and looked at a few solutions:
1. Time Capsule - I've owned a 1TB 1st gen & sold it as I didn't believe MAC filtering was actually working. 2. DLink DNS-323 - Looks like a good solution for simple NAS backup; limited and build quality looks cheap for the price (ext $215-239CAN new) 3. Synology DS210j or DS209
My needs are pretty simple for now and soon going to grow. I've own two Macs - Mac Mini & Al_MB - and currently I'm backing up to a local USB WD MyBook Elite 2TB for the Mini as the family uses it the most. My wife has just got a high-end camera and going to get serious with pictures in RAW format and I figure by end of September our 350GB HDD on the Mini will get full. My Al_uMB will be used for personal surfing, learning XCode and majority for audio production (personal projects).
I updated to 10.6.1 and now my remote TM backup disk (connected to airport) will not connect. I can't make backups, nor can I access them. SL is some buggy update. If I had the time and could access my backup I would downgrade to 10.5.8!
With either the latest Airport Extreme or Time Capsule, can I remote into the hard drive over the internet? (It would not be directly connected to any computer. Just an external hard drive, or built in for Time Capsule, plugged into the Airport)
I have the new Time Capsule and am able to access it remotely just fine. However, because I'm stuck at school all day, I rarely get the chance to back up my Macbook Pro. Does anyone know of a way to have Time Machine backup to a remote disk, such as my Time Capsule? (I'm a Mobile Me subscriber, by the way)
I have been attempting to connect to my TC remotely, and I have not been successful. I followed the instructions posted here. But to no avail. I am able to connect to it as a server, but only from within my network. when I go to connect, it appears to be going through the internetz and connecting, but when I move outside of my network it does not work.
I have this annoying problem with my iMac in the same room as my Apple TV and whenever I use my Apple TV Remote, it also turns on a movie on my iMac and that bugs me. Sure I could turn down the sound so I don't hear it but that does not solve the problem.
Is there a way to pair these remotes, I have one for my iMac and 1 for my ATV, and whenever I play something on my ATV it also starts a movie on my apple, usually a different movie. Can they be paired separately somehow so they are controlling only the unit they are suppose to be with?
I just got my new iMac 21.5, works great. I'm a Mac newbie. I have a remote Windows machine I'd like to use as a network drive. I also have a NAS (Netgear SC101T) which I basically don't use anymore, thus I'll use the PC. I have two wireless routers so that function is of no value to me. So IMHO I don't need a Time Capsule.
I'd like to configure Time Machine to use the Windows networked drive as the "Time Capsule". Is this possible? If so, how do I do that? And how does that impact the Restore functionality if I'm not using the $300+ Time Capsule? Will it still restore a dead machine if it comes down to it?
I'm looking for a system that can track about 50 MBP's providing both remote wipe as part of an overall security protocol, and also remote screen/desktop for admin purposes. I looked at preyproject.com but it looks like they only do remote wiping/tracking. that I don't want something locked to a single user, it should be centrally managed.
I've set up an old MacPro to be a media center for my AppleTV. I'd like to set up a VNC client to work with the box so my wife can get her monitor back from me (I'm using her second monitor). I poked around and found Chicken of the VNC and thought this would work.
I just want to log into that machine through my MacBook. I thought that I just had to plug in the IP of the box and I'd pretty much be off and running but that isn't working out. CotVNC keeps locking up every time I try what I think is right. Can someone give me a quick and dirty run-down of what I need to do in order to do what I want?
I'm about to drop $3000 on a Mac Pro, and it amazes me that the IR feature that is in their entry level Mac Mini and MacBooks is not in their top-of-the-line Workstations. Why has Apple not included an IR sensor for use with the Apple remote? Does Apple think that Pro uses won't want to use Front Row on their Pro machines? Besides, I can think of a ton of other uses for the remote other than just Front Row. And using the keyboard stinks. What are you guys doing? Has anyone come up with a solution? How can I use the Apple remote with a Mac Pro? Also, while we're at it, Apple killed the iSight camera a while ago. What are you to do if you have a Mac Pro with a Cinema Display?
I have got a Mac at home and I would like to remote access it from my Windows PC at the office. Is this possible? Remote access which means my PC screen would be exactly the same as my Mac at home.
I've been using Plex for a while now (try it out, best media center app in my opinion) and everything is great. I use it with my Apple Remote, but it's been missing for 3 days, and I don't want to spend the 20 bucks or so. Is there any, aaany way of using a remote other than apples (e.g. my TV or DVD remote) with Mac?
I just got a 27" iMac and love the remote app on my iPod touch but my girlfriend changes the songs constantly while I am on the computer and iTunes pops up every time she changes the song. Is there any way to change this so that iTunes doesn't pop up when she changes the song using her iPod or iPhone?
We are looking at putting a new Mac desktop in upstairs, a little way from our electric piano which is downstairs. Now presuming we've got a long enough cable, could we link the piano to the Mac then control the Mac through a remote desktop connection using a Windows XP/7 PC.
I use VNC around my house to access computers remotely. While I can access my Windows machine from my Mac, I am having trouble accessing my Mac from Windows in a reliable fashion.
I am now using VineServer on the Mac and TightVNC on the PC, but after a while it will become unresponsive, and require frequent re-connects and refreshes.
Apple's Screen Sharing is amazing running from Mac to Mac, but I don't have an extra Mac for downstairs at the moment.
Is there a way to access OSX's built in screen sharing from a PC? Or a better server for Mac or client for PC that will give better connectivity?
My old 24" iMac died and remotes aren't included with the new models. Now that Front Row is dead, can I use the old remote for anything other than launching iTunes?
If I ssh from my Macbook Pro to my iMac, I can run the xclock command like this:
ssh -X imac /usr/X11/bin/xclock
Is it possible to do something similar with a .app application? If I ssh in and use the "open" command to open the calculator, it opens on the Mac, but I can't see it from my Macbook: open -a Calculator.app
i would like to be able to remotely access my macbook from anywhere across the internet. but i am looking for something more automatic, than the way i have set it up for my desktop using port forwarding, since i never know where the macbook will be and therefore a given network will already have its router configured and forwarded for my laptop.
i want to have access to file, isight, and screen sharing. i can only assume i need third party software but havent found any.
So two questions (I will try to write out as best as I can, hopefully it's understandable).
1: Is it possible that while I am on a business trip with my laptop that if I needed to access my network at work that I can remotely access it to view computers on the network with abilities to grab files from a computer, check things / alter things, and maintain. If so how?
2: If someone is on my network is it possible to see what traffic they are bringing in or out of my network without installing a file on their pc / mac to know the site they entered, file download, etc.

My cousin has an iBook g3 running Panther. She is having a little trouble using it and I am here to help her with it.
It would be so much easier to do things remotely with her.
My question is, can my PC (Windows XP Home) remotely connect to her laptop (10.3 Panther)?
If not possible at all, then that's ok. If it is not possible: my new MBA will be coming in the middle of December. When I receive it, then could I help her remotely?
I just had this question because I set up her network at home remotely (XP to XP)
how do i copy a directory from my universities server to my Mac using SSH in Terminal? i assume you use cp with -r to copy a directory but im not sure about the rest.
I'm thinking about getting an MBA and using it as a primary computer. My HTPC is pretty powerful and so I was hoping that I would be able to control is via Remote Desktop to do any heavy lifting I need to do. Is it a problem to run remote desktop wirelessly?
For those who travel a lot, and must sometimes use internet cafes (usually that have PCs), can you remote desktop into your home/office Mac via a PC securely? If so, how?
