OS X :: Remote Time Machine Not Connecting After 10.6.1 Update

Sep 11, 2009

I updated to 10.6.1 and now my remote TM backup disk (connected to airport) will not connect. I can't make backups, nor can I access them. SL is some buggy update. If I had the time and could access my backup I would downgrade to 10.5.8!

OS X :: Time Machine Remote Backup - How To Do

Oct 6, 2010

I have a Mac at home. I would like to use Time Machine to backup my files to a linux server at a relative's house. For the sake of bandwidth, there are a few things that I would like to do:

1. Do the initial backup at my house. Since the initial backup would be 200+GB (I shoot photos in RAW), I would like to not surpass my bandwidth cap. Also, it would take a long, long time to transfer that much stuff over standard broadband connections. Supplemental backups should be no more than 1GB or so per week.
2. Be able to connect and disconnect the network drive/share on command. This will keep Time Machine from eating up time and bandwidth with hourly backups. (Although I guess that turning Time Machine on and off would have the same effect).

What do I need to do, to set this up? I am guessing that I will need to:

1. Setup a share on the linux server. (Not sure how to do this, but I am sure that I can figure it out with some research).
2. Connect my Mac to that share, mapped as a network drive. (How do I do this securely)?
3. Point Time Machine to the network drive, using a method like this [URL]

Is there a better solution for doing incremental backups over the Internet?

Hardware :: Mac NAS Solutions - Remote Time Machine

Sep 6, 2010

Yes this is yet another NAS thread. I've read a few of them over the past month, new/old and looked at a few solutions:

1. Time Capsule - I've owned a 1TB 1st gen & sold it as I didn't believe MAC filtering was actually working.
2. DLink DNS-323 - Looks like a good solution for simple NAS backup; limited and build quality looks cheap for the price (ext $215-239CAN new)
3. Synology DS210j or DS209

My needs are pretty simple for now and soon going to grow. I've own two Macs - Mac Mini & Al_MB - and currently I'm backing up to a local USB WD MyBook Elite 2TB for the Mini as the family uses it the most. My wife has just got a high-end camera and going to get serious with pictures in RAW format and I figure by end of September our 350GB HDD on the Mini will get full. My Al_uMB will be used for personal surfing, learning XCode and majority for audio production (personal projects).

But when I try to connect to my Time Capsule I get a message, "there is a problem connecting to time capsule". My iMac and Macbook pro both connect to the same time capsule with no problem. It seems the time machine prefpane on the MacPro has been corrupted. What to do?

Hardware :: How To Setup Time Machine To Backup Remote Windows Drive

Dec 30, 2009

I just got my new iMac 21.5, works great. I'm a Mac newbie. I have a remote Windows machine I'd like to use as a network drive. I also have a NAS (Netgear SC101T) which I basically don't use anymore, thus I'll use the PC. I have two wireless routers so that function is of no value to me. So IMHO I don't need a Time Capsule.

I'd like to configure Time Machine to use the Windows networked drive as the "Time Capsule". Is this possible? If so, how do I do that? And how does that impact the Restore functionality if I'm not using the $300+ Time Capsule? Will it still restore a dead machine if it comes down to it?

Hardware :: Connecting External Hdd For Time Machine - Firewire Or USB?

I'm trying to decide between these two drives:

I'm wondering if the speed difference with Firewire 400 over USB 2.0 is worth the extra $30. I'll primarily be using this for Time Machine backup, but also to store other large files when necessary.

OS X :: 10.6.1 Update Destroyed Time Capsule / Time Machine Setup

Sep 15, 2009

Ever since I updated to 10.6.1 I've had the following problems:

- Time Machine does not work at all with my Time Capsule. When it attempts to back up my data, Time Machine gets hung up with a status of "Making backup disk available..." and the icon in the menu bar just spins forever (the status appears in the menu bar icon's menu). I also cannot enter Time Machine; it gets hung trying to connect to the Time Capsule and I have to cancel it. Finder then takes up 100% CPU and I have to power down by holding in the power button (shutting down from the Apple menu doesn't work).

- I store my iTunes library in a folder called Music under the Data folder on the Time Capsule. When I open iTunes, it prompts me to choose my iTunes library. When I do, it starts to load the list of albums, then iTunes locks up and I must force quit it. This also causes my machine to not be able to shut down or restart from the Apple menu.

Oddly enough I can still access the Data folder from Finder with no issues. I just wanted to put this out there in case other people are having similar problems. It's pretty frustrating as all this worked fine before the 10.6.1 update.

Hardware :: Connecting Partitioned Drive To Airport Extreme For Time Machine?

Sep 21, 2009

Reading through the forums I haven't got a clear picture on whether this idea will work, so I was hoping someone could clear it up for me. It seems to have been clouded by people having problems with Airport-connected drives in Snow Leopard.I want to partition a hard drive and connect it through USB to an Airport Extreme. Then I want to use each partition as separate Time Machine backups for my iMac and MacBook.1. If connecting a partitioned hard drive, will all partitions be accessible through Airport Extreme?2. Can I use partitions connected in this way as Time Machine backups?3. Will there be problems if both my iMac and MacBook try to backup to the Time Machines at the same time?

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Using Time Machine To Determine When I Installed Update?

Feb 22, 2012

Does anyone know if there is a file I can look at on the system to determine what version of the OS is install?  I'm no longer able to boot once I updated to 10.7.3 and I want to restore from Time Machine back to 10.7.2 but I don't remember the exact date that I did the update.  I want to be able to look at the Time Machine backup files by attaching it to another machine in order to determine when I did the update and restore from that point.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Update From 10.7.2 To 10.7.3 Blown / Time Machine Restore Blown

Feb 6, 2012

summary of events:Update form 10.7.02 to 10.7.3 went wrongAfter Time Machine Restore no more Recovery PartionLost about what to do On Saturday, I startet to update 10.7.2 to 10.7.3 on my MB Pro 15" (2007) Apples Software Update showed the combo update, and so I started download and installation. Just before that, I had run Time Machine on an external USB drive, so I was relaxed. After about 2 hours, the update was still running with no progress. After another hour, I forced a restart. Not very suprisingly, after the login, the wheel beneath the Apple logo kept on running. So I restarted from the Recovery Partition, selected my Time Machine-Backup from the external USB drive, selected my internal HD as target and clicked on "go".While the progress bar showed progress, I waited. Then it seemed to be complete and the MBP restarted. Now I got a folder with a question mark. My heart rate did not yet accelerate, since I had a back up, right? So I restarted again trying to boot from Recovery Partition - BUT, there was no longer a Recovery Partition. Or at least, nothing I could boot from.

What options do I have? I could get my hands on a DVD that contains an Lion installation from the app store, but that is not the most recent version, as far as I can tell. If I would go that  way:Does the version of the Lion-app matter? Will it create a Recovery Partition? If not, how else could I restore a complete Time-Machine backup?

Naturally, I a am mad as **** at Apple. First, that they abandoned physical media for Mac OS distribution, and secondly that some not so bright lad thought it not necessary to secure the availability of the Recovery Partition under any circumstances short of phyical damage.

MacBook :: Backup Management / How To Update Time Machine Backup On Different Mac

Jun 30, 2014

There are 3 macs:

A: an old macbook (the white one)
B: a modern macbook pro (retina)
C: another modern macbook pro (TBD)

I am giving away B now; I expect to get C in 2 months time; I keep A with me all the time.

The goal is to migrate all of the data from B to C. I have Time Machine backups of B.

Since the transition is a long time (2 months), I need to keep working on my data during this period. For this I will use A. This will generate new files, modify old ones, ...

Since A's HDD is much smaller than B's backup, I can move only part of them.

By the way, I have totally erased A and used migration assistant to restore part of my old data from B. So, when I use A now, I do it with my same account as in B (and the same I will use in C).

How do I manage my backups in such a way that, when I will get C, I can safely move all of the data I had in B plus all of the changes and modifications that I have done during the 2 month transition?

Can I just continue to use Time Machine (on A) to update the old backups? I am afraid that some mess could be created because the computers are different (before the backups were taken on B, while now on A), even the present data are different (because now A only contains a subset of the original B data, which I do NOT want to lose), the good point is that the user is the same.

Hardware :: Connect To Time Capsule While Connecting To Wifi Network At Same Time?

Sep 22, 2009

I recently purchased a Time Capsule to use as a wireless hard drive. I connect to the internet both through wifi and ethernet to a educational network that does not allow extra routers, etc, to be added to the network, therefore I can not use the time capsule for this wifi.

I therefore want to connect to my early 2009 MBP17unibody to both the academic internet network for http/pop3/ftp/etc while simultaneously connecting to external hard drive to store data/itunes-library/etc.

I expect this has been asked before but I can't find any threads where it has. If anyone knows it would be highly helpful. I'd prefer to connect to both wirelessly but I could potentially put up with connecting to either or both with ethernet.
