OS X V10.7 Lion :: Run A Remote App Via Ssh?
May 16, 2012
If I ssh from my Macbook Pro to my iMac, I can run the xclock command like this:
ssh -X imac
/usr/X11/bin/xclock
Is it possible to do something similar with a .app application? If I ssh in and use the "open" command to open the calculator, it opens on the Mac, but I can't see it from my Macbook: open -a Calculator.app

I'm looking for a system that can track about 50 MBP's providing both remote wipe as part of an overall security protocol, and also remote screen/desktop for admin purposes. I looked at preyproject.com but it looks like they only do remote wiping/tracking. that I don't want something locked to a single user, it should be centrally managed.

My Apple Remote recently stopped working with my iMac and I cant figgure out how to get it to work again. I've changed the batteries and I get a blinking light when I hold it up to the iSight camera. It was paired with my mac, but didn't work, so I tried unpairing it and re-pairing it, however, now it wont pair again. It worked fine untill about a month ago, then just stopped working.

My grandmother has hearing impairment and macular degeneration, but has learnt to use her mac (with zoom) to remain in contact with all her family and friends. However she does not live close to anyone who can help her when little problems arise, and I was wondering how simple remote desktop would be for me to use to sort out little problems? It would mainly be to fix little issues such as reconnecting them to their wifi, changing browser settings (appearance of bookmarks etc) and also to allow us to better see the problems she is describing. We are both running OS Lion, however my grandpa has recently started learing on his own refurbished mac running snow leopard so it would be great if I can remotely access both.
Also how easy is it to set up? I'm assuming we'd need someone at their end to get things connected initially which could be arranged, but none of us are mac experts just yet (I've just bought my first ever mac).

My brother and I share folders and various file types through ichat at the moment, but it's so slow, we are both on pretty fast networks (35/35MB and 50/8MB) I can mount a folder of his on my mac (we are in seperate towns) by putting our apple ID's into the apple extreme section (I think back to my mac) and we can share files that way, but I am confused as to why the transfer rates are so slow, we get at best 32KBs. Any recommendations for a faster file transfer method between remote macs.

In school I remotely have to manage a some Macs - update software, update apps on iTunes etc. Is it possible to remotely log in to a mac and work without mirroring the main screen - but rather having an independent screen to the local screen? I sometimes have a short window of opportunity to gain access to a mac when pupils aren't using them - so if I could work without disturbing them - opening my own iTunes, running software update etc etc - that would be so easy. I have discovered that it will soon be possible in Mountain Lion to do.url... but was wondering if a 3rd party app was available now?

If our users can simply remove the Remote Management Profile and have access to everything anyway, what is the point of remote management? I need to be able to lock this profile down so that it cannot be removed without a password, but I see no way to do this. Is this a giant bug in the software or am I missing something?

When I am in the office connected via the local LAN the share screen button in Finder is displayed. When I am at home anc connected via broadband I can still see the server and shares but I have no share screen button. Is there a preference that needs to be set somewhere to enable the remote share screen or is it more likely to be a firewall issue with a blocked port?

I found a strange glitch with file permissions when accessing a network drive, on Lion. I am accessing my internal drive on my iMac over Wi-Fi from my MacBook. I am logged in under my user name. I notice that for every file on the remote drive (on my iMac), "staff" and "everyone" are ready only, but read & write access is reserved for "macports". Macports? It does not list my own name as having read & write permissions, and so I cannot save any file to this remote drive. When I access the drive locally on my iMac, the permissions appear correctly for the same files, i.e. my own name is listed as having read & write access. Is there some kind of glitch where the file permissions are misread when accessing a drive over the network?

I will soon be getting a new macbook pro ret (soon) and will leave my macbook (13-inch, Aluminum, Late 2008) in the office where I am situated in university. I am looking to ensure that I can leave one at office and one at home. Yet keep access to both, I have seen "logmein pro" and seems to look good except one problem. It says to wake from sleep you need a computer on network running logmein. This I cannot guarantee as it is a university network. It also says that it will need to be linked to the network through cable to wake from sleep.
I will also need to close the lid of the laptop (or leave it open and risk trashing it) and have a password/login lock incase someone decides they want to be naughty. Anyway, I need a program that i can use over wifi (not highest priority) that WILL wake my macs from sleep (highest priority) and WILL (essential) allow me to have full remote access to computers including drag and drop. I dont care about accessing from my mobile as have drop box.

Apple writes in its OS X Lion screen sharing description that: "You can remotely log in to a Mac with any user account on that computer and control it, without interrupting someone else who might be using the computer under a different login."
Unfortunately, this is not true in my case: When other users are using my 2011 iMac for webbrowsing or DVD watching and I log in on my own acount from my macbook pro, video will stop playing, the spinning wheel sometime appears. The system does not really crash, but wil respond very slowly and in fact is not useable until I as remote user stop my activities or log out. This is not how it should be, especially as the iMac's CPU, memory and network load are very low according to activity monitor's information.

I've set up an old MacPro to be a media center for my AppleTV. I'd like to set up a VNC client to work with the box so my wife can get her monitor back from me (I'm using her second monitor). I poked around and found Chicken of the VNC and thought this would work.
I just want to log into that machine through my MacBook. I thought that I just had to plug in the IP of the box and I'd pretty much be off and running but that isn't working out. CotVNC keeps locking up every time I try what I think is right. Can someone give me a quick and dirty run-down of what I need to do in order to do what I want?

I'm about to drop $3000 on a Mac Pro, and it amazes me that the IR feature that is in their entry level Mac Mini and MacBooks is not in their top-of-the-line Workstations. Why has Apple not included an IR sensor for use with the Apple remote? Does Apple think that Pro uses won't want to use Front Row on their Pro machines? Besides, I can think of a ton of other uses for the remote other than just Front Row. And using the keyboard stinks. What are you guys doing? Has anyone come up with a solution? How can I use the Apple remote with a Mac Pro? Also, while we're at it, Apple killed the iSight camera a while ago. What are you to do if you have a Mac Pro with a Cinema Display?

I've been using Plex for a while now (try it out, best media center app in my opinion) and everything is great. I use it with my Apple Remote, but it's been missing for 3 days, and I don't want to spend the 20 bucks or so. Is there any, aaany way of using a remote other than apples (e.g. my TV or DVD remote) with Mac?

I use VNC around my house to access computers remotely. While I can access my Windows machine from my Mac, I am having trouble accessing my Mac from Windows in a reliable fashion.
I am now using VineServer on the Mac and TightVNC on the PC, but after a while it will become unresponsive, and require frequent re-connects and refreshes.
Apple's Screen Sharing is amazing running from Mac to Mac, but I don't have an extra Mac for downstairs at the moment.
Is there a way to access OSX's built in screen sharing from a PC? Or a better server for Mac or client for PC that will give better connectivity?
