View 2 RepliesI was looking for a remote desktop solution that would allow me to access my OS X iMac from my PC laptop that can run either Windows 7 or Ubuntu. I would prefer the solution to be free but I am open to every software idea and I have no preference between accessing OS X from Windows 7 or Ubuntu.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have been attempting to connect to my TC remotely, and I have not been successful. I followed the instructions posted here. But to no avail. I am able to connect to it as a server, but only from within my network. when I go to connect, it appears to be going through the internetz and connecting, but when I move outside of my network it does not work.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI've set up an old MacPro to be a media center for my AppleTV. I'd like to set up a VNC client to work with the box so my wife can get her monitor back from me (I'm using her second monitor). I poked around and found Chicken of the VNC and thought this would work.
I just want to log into that machine through my MacBook. I thought that I just had to plug in the IP of the box and I'd pretty much be off and running but that isn't working out. CotVNC keeps locking up every time I try what I think is right. Can someone give me a quick and dirty run-down of what I need to do in order to do what I want?
I have got a Mac at home and I would like to remote access it from my Windows PC at the office. Is this possible? Remote access which means my PC screen would be exactly the same as my Mac at home.
View 11 Replies View Relatedi would like to be able to remotely access my macbook from anywhere across the internet. but i am looking for something more automatic, than the way i have set it up for my desktop using port forwarding, since i never know where the macbook will be and therefore a given network will already have its router configured and forwarded for my laptop.
i want to have access to file, isight, and screen sharing. i can only assume i need third party software but havent found any.
So two questions (I will try to write out as best as I can, hopefully it's understandable).
1: Is it possible that while I am on a business trip with my laptop that if I needed to access my network at work that I can remotely access it to view computers on the network with abilities to grab files from a computer, check things / alter things, and maintain. If so how?
2: If someone is on my network is it possible to see what traffic they are bringing in or out of my network without installing a file on their pc / mac to know the site they entered, file download, etc.

I would like to remote access my mac from home wherever I go. I don't want to do SSH or register at any website, I know it's better but all I'm looking for is to just be able to remote access my mac via screen share so here's what I've done so far.
I've opened the ports on the airport extreme base station (5900 etc.) and set the private ip address for the mac under port mapping.
I've set the private ip statically on my mac at home through system preferences
I've turned on screen share on my mac at home
I've recorded the public ip address for me to have for remotely logging in remotely
I've done all of these steps and I still can't remotely login to my mac at home. Now, the only thing I forgot to do is set the password under the screen sharing settings under sharing. Is that the only thing I need to do to be able to achieve successful remote access? Is there anything else I need to do besides creating a password for VNC and the step I've described above?
Hoping someone can provide a few beginners tips here...
I'm trying to set up Remote HD app on my iPhone 4 so that I can tap in to my iMac remotely. I've set it up for the wireless LAN at home, but want to set it up to tap in over the web.
The Remote HD website gives a small paragraph on it but it doesn't really mean anything to me.

Can you give me any pointers on how to set this up?
I've finished setting up a small server using the public folder on m,y mac mini running OS X 10.5.7. I'm able to easily access it and use my login to access the public folder on my home network. My question is, how can i set up a system by which remotely, I can login to access JUST the public folder on my mini. Is this possible? If not, what else could I do that would allow something like this.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI may be clutching at straws here but I'm wondering if there is an application that will allow me to access my office Mac from my home Mac, primarily to transfer files I may have forgotten to take home.
The key point here is that I don't leave my office Mac on, so is there a remote app that can also start the office Mac up ready for use remotely? Presumably there is one that would wake it but I prefer to shut down when I leave.
I cannot get write access to a remote AFP share. Here's what I have: Mac Mini which is where the share exists. I have file sharing turned on, the desired directories enabled via "system prefs" and both my local mac mini account and "administrators" group set for read and write access. The "everyone" group has "read only" access which seems to be enabled by default - I did not remove this permission. My local mac mini account also has my MobileMe account listed as the MobileMe user name in the account manager.
My account on my macbook has a different short name. When I connect to the mac mini via Finder (under "shared"), it connects using the mobileme account. I can view the AFP share on the mac mini, but I cannot write to it. I click "disconnect" and reconnect using my mac mini's user account (the admin level account that is set for read and write access in file sharing) and password, but the results are the same (read-only access). When I go back into the top level finder window for the mac mini, it shows it is connected as the mobile me account despite the fact that I purposely disconnected and re-connected using the mac mini account.
More info since original post: The pop-up errors I get when I try to write a file are (in order): "You may need to enter the name and password for an administrator on this computer to change the item named family-2009" (note family -2009 is an iMovie project). I'm not changing family-2009 and there is no remote copy, so I don't understand what it claims needs admin rights to change. If I click "continue" - The item "family-2009" contains one or more items you do not have permission to read. do you want to copy the items you are allowed to read?"
It's my iMovie project that I created from scratch, so I don't know where this bunk about not having read access to some of the items is coming from. If I click "continue" the final error is - The operation cannot be completed becaue an item with the name "family-2009" already exists. There is no such file with that name on the remote AFP share, so I don't know WTF this thing is trying to do. It's complaining about having read access to an existing file when the permissions are set for read and write and the file doesn't exist. Both systems are fully patched Leopard.
As you all probably have heard by now, some schools that give computers to students have been accessing the cameras in Macs to spy on the people using them. My sister is a college professor and her school gave her a Mac with a camera, how can she verify that no one has been spying on her? Is there anything she can do to prevent it from happening in the future?
View 7 Replies View RelatedMy boss is going on a two week long tour, starting tomorrow, with her MacBook Air and I wanted to be able to assist her should she need any technical help on the go.
The only options I know for Remote Desktop Access are ChickenVNC and Remote Desktop from Apple, but both are a bit complicated depending on the connection you are using. Also, she wouldn't understand how to find her specific IP address, when on a hotel Wifi connection.
I was wondering if any of you have a suggestion for software that is extremely simple to use and would allow me to assist her through screen control, by having her simply opening and/or logging into the program.
I'm considering a MBA (not sure on the size yet), but need to know if I can use the built in Remote File Access to grab files from my PC or if I would need to buy the Airport Extreme as well.
I'm also curious if anyone has used GarageBand on the MBA and if it runs smoothly. I'm considering the 4 GB MBA primarily for this purpose.
I am moving to a new job that will be about 30 minutes away from home, and I'd like to be able to access my home Mac Pro. I should have fairly decent internet at the new home and new job, so I'd like to set up some sort of VPN or remote access.
Would having DynDNS and then VNC acccess be the best way to do this? What about setting up a VPN so I can access files from a work machine?
I will be traveling overseas soon, I have a PowerBook and an Intel iMac, I want to be able to access some files from my PowerBook while I'm away, and at the same time, can I use the iSight in my iMac as a surveillance camera? Unacceptable answer: "use the search function, has been covered several times!". Acceptable answer: "go to bed, you obviously need some rest".

I Currently want the following to happen, so kindly lead me in the right direction to getting this to work. I want to have quickbooks installed on the Mac. I want other computers (mostly Windows) that are not on the same network to be able to access this company file and update it. For instance, if I am using quickbooks on the mac at the home location, I want someone on the road with a Pc (windows) to be able to update the file with new invoices/clients etc etc, so I can view them instantly at the home location on the mac. Right now I edit, export, save email, load, save , export, email.....so much of a hassle.
1) Multi User quick books 2009 - Check
2) Mac Powermac G5 2.0DP 2gigs.
3)....???
if it is easier to just NOT have access on the mac and to just store it there for remote access...I am perfectly fine with that as well!
I am running snow leopard 10.6.2 on a imac G% and we work on a network from a PC external hard drive. We are suddenly having problems with folders, whereby if a new folder is made from the mac (on the external hard drive) then no one but that mac that made the folder has access privileges. Even our other mac can't seem to access the folder, so if any mac makes a folder no one can access it.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am a new Mac user this year ( I bought a 27" C2D iMac) and finally converted from a Linksys wireless G router to an Airport Extreme. Everything was simple to set up on the Airport. One question I have is how to remote administer the Extreme. On the Linksys I would enable remote administration by opening port 8080. Then from an off site location, I would type my IP Address ( I have a static IP) as follows - IP_Address:8080 in a web browser like Firefox. This would bring up a login screen for me to log into my router. The reason I would like to remote administer my router is that I have several Linux servers on my network that I use VNC to administer. I do not like logging into one server and then from that server logging into another server on the network. Rather I would just change the VNC port forwarding to the IP address of the server I wanted to reach via the Linksys admin. Is there a way to get to my Airport Extreme without going through my iMac?
View 8 Replies View RelatedMy goal is to by a mac mini that will run 24/7 it will be connected to about 5TB's of storage that will have all my personal data on it. My goal is to create an FTP server that will host all these files that I can access remotely and let friends and family access it. I pretty much have it all sorted out I just wanted to check with some people on here. To run it I will be using a program called PureFTPd to manage the server and I can create accounts and manage them all through this application. Does anyone have a better way for me to do this or an alternate application that is better, And also I have connected to my mac book pro remotely using the built in FTP feature and PureFTP so yer, Does anyone else have a better idea for me running a server?

What remote access app or software do you recommend for imac and ipad?
Info:Mac Pro
I'm getting conflicting info about this. Those who seem knowledgeable say you need a MAC at home to use BTMM with the new Airport but there are reports of people that are connecting to TC or USB disks over the internet without a MAC at home.
And to make matters worse it's confusing to begin with. Also, there doesn't seem to be much interest in this issue.
From the Apple forum:
Re: Accessing time capsule drives on MobileMe
Posted: Mar 6, 2009 2:51 PM
"I have been reading online and it appears that you must actually have a Mac connected to the TC to enable the drive sharing. This apparently still requires a Mac at home. The new thing is only that drives connected via USB to a TC or AEBS are visible when connecting to your Mac at home via Back-to-my-Mac. I was under the impression you could connect directly to the TC less the Mac connection, it appears thats not the case."
Reply
"that completely defeats the whole purpose I hope that is not the case. Is there any other way to access your timecapsule from another internet location? "
Reply
"Nope. I just finally got mine to work without any home computer connected to the shared disks on my AEBS. I didn't change anything from 5 minutes ago when it didn't work, but it does now. "
Here are all the steps I took:
1. Added MobileMe info on the Advanced screen
2. Checked the box to share disks over the Internet
3. Checked the box to share the disks using Bonjour
4. Added a wide-area Bonjour hostname
Hopefully this was just something they turned on rather than a grim promise of spotty service.
Reply
"I did not even have to do (2) (3) and (4).
But I think the service is rather slow right now. So you might not see your AirDisk appearing on the Finder immediately.
Also AirPort Utility will take advantage of wide-area bonjour and MobileMe service as well, by login onto MobileMe, you can remotely configure your TC."
Update: Here's another one (for my own info)
Quote:
" Ididn't even have to do that much. I have one of the original Time Capsules (purchased the first day they were available in the Apple Store). I updated to the latest firmware and the latest Airport Utility. Went into the MobileMe preference on the Time Capsule and entered my user name and password. I went to school, opened Finder, clicked on Time Capsule, it asked for my Time Capsule user name and password, and now could access the Time Capsule drive. I even copied a 24MB file over and it all worked just fine. The only thing I didn't do was try to copy something from my computer to the Time Capsule. I did try to do a backup via Time Machine but that did not work. Even if it had I don't think I would ever do backups remotely.
If it helps - I am a MobleMe subscriber/user, I have Back to my Mac turned on in the MobileMe preferences, I have a unibody MacBook, I'm using Mac OS X 10.5.6, and as I mentioned before - Time Capsule firmware 7.4.1 and Airport Utility 5.4.1. My Time Capsule is not connected to another Mac permanently. It is in my utility room connected only to my Comcast modem. "
end quote.
So it sure looks like you can do this. Not sure though as it's all a bit of a mess i'm not sure I want to step in.......
I would like to ask on how I can connect securely to my iMac at home from my MBP when I'm travelling. I have subscribed to MobileMe, unfortunately, it is not always possible to connect using MobileMe due to technical issues (Many would have agreed that MobileMe are not reliable at times).
What I would like to achieve is the following:
1) Install either a VPN and/or SSH server in my iMac at home
2) Enable access not only my iMac but also my home network and internet connection from my home.
2) Be able to browse using my iMac or AEBS in my home network from my MBP in a secure way (similar to proxy).
I understand that I can setup SSH server and do some port forwarding with it. I need more details or tutorial on this, if you have any link that would be appreicated. Basically, I understand the idea but this would be impractical as I need to setup a lot of forwarding (one forwarding for each service).
So VPN solution may be cleaner in a way. I checked that OpenVPN.net doesn't support newer OSX anymore. Any idea how to do this? I have identified an OpenVPN client that can be used but not the server portion.
