Hardware :: G4 Fan Runs At Max Speed From Startup
Jan 15, 2008As stated on subject, the fan in my PBG4 runs at max speed from the laptop starts. I have tried to reset NVRAM, PRAM, PMU, but no luck. The laptop is not hot at all.

Jun 7, 2012Our iMac is 18 months old and three times in the last few months the fan has switched on at full speed as soon as I press the power button. If I disconnect the computer from the power source and turn it upside down before reconnecting and starting it up, the fan will then work normally. Has anyone else had this problem? I guess the answer is to take it to a service centre, but I thought I would see if there is a simple resolution to the problem first.

Power Mac G5 :: X800 Fan Runs At Full Speed All The Time
Dec 30, 2007I recently purchased an X800 and installed in my G5 1.8DP (OS X 10.4.9) with the intention of having something to drive my shiney new 30" Cinema display. All booted fine and, in glorious wide-o-vision, I spent the next 30 mins playing with all of this extra screen real-estate. At that point, I started to notice that things were not as quiet as I'd initially anticipated.
In fact, the amount of fan noise was so high that I'm not going to be able to use the new card as the machine is part of a project recording studio installation. Doh! So, a quick trawl of the ATI web site lead me to the ROM updates claiming to address fan speed control.
Update to the most recent version of the ROM and no change. Similarly, I've installed the most recent version of teh ATI control panel.
Odd as other people seem to be saying that they're not experiencing the same problem. And strangely, the GFX card fan runs at a low "normal" speed in Safe Boot mode whilst installing the ROM updates.

Oct 19, 2008I have an early 2008 Black MacBook with 4GB of RAM and the stock 160GB hard drive. Sometimes, when I have only Mail and Safari open and am just browsing emails, the fan starts to run full speed, and the internal temperature reaches 180. This often happens when the Mac is actually idle and only displaying the screen saver! The room I'm in is rarely over 75 when this occurs. I don't really have any intensive login services, just a GMail notifier and things like Suitcase and iTunes Manager.

Aug 27, 2014My iMac runs perfectly fine; more or less as it did when it was new. In OS X, when I shut down the computer, the fan runs at full speed indefinitely, unless I unplug it or boot back up. When running, the fan is perfectly normal (increases speed a bit when doing something taxing). I've never heard it at full speed before until this started happening. After following the SMC reset procedure with no luck (I'd like to add that the SMC reset only says it relates to fan problems when the computer is ON), I searched a bit and noticed there are one or two cases where a problem like mine was believed to be a motherboard issue, and therefore a costly fix.
However, here's the fun part. When booted into Windows 8.1, shutting down the iMac does not cause this issue to occur. It stays silent, as it should, even if I disconnect then reconnect the power. This leads me to believe it's unlikely to be a motherboard issue. However I've wiped, restored, and reinstalled fresh copies of Mountain Lion, Mavericks, and Windows 8.1, and the result is still the same: if I don't want to have to unplug it from the wall, then I have to use Windows to shut it down.
So then, my questions are these:
-What is the difference between shutting down from OS X and shutting down from Windows?
-Is an operating system allowed/able to touch BIOS settings?
-Is it possible to still be a hardware problem, given this difference?
My default OS is OS X, and it makes no difference if I change that to Windows. I also did a PRAM reset, even though that has nothing to do with fans...

Jun 25, 2012Macbook Air isn't a year old and I don't leave it plugged in ever. The battery might last 2 hours and gets very hot. In addition the fan runs at a very high speed. The computer won't shut down in a normal way. I have to hold the power button down to shut it off.

Oct 10, 2007I purchased my PowerMac G5 in 2003 and no problems till now. My problem is that on startup, the display first shows gray screen with a globe in a white box flashing in the center of the screen. This continues for about 90 seconds --- then the globe in box icon changes to a small file folder icon with alternating face/question mark flashing in the file folder. At about the same time, the fan speeds up dramatically. The fan continues to run at this high speed for about 90 additional seconds, then the fan returns to normal speed, and the startup continues normally to the blue screen. Once startup is complete, computer runs okay. The whole process takes about 4 minutes.

Nov 22, 2008I purchased a used ibook from owc in January and have had it back to them twice for repairs. Lately, it stopped booting up again and they told me to use [URL] to take the mobo out and ship it to Arizona to have the solder refloated. I did and got it back, put it together and it would boot up, only to run for 15 minutes and shut down. Thinking I missed something, I dissasembled it today and reassembled it. Now it turns on with a blank screen, the fan runs on high, and it will go no further. I tried to reset the power manager, reset the p-ram, the hard drive is only a few months old and my brain is getting fried with frustration.

Oct 20, 2009I've got an early 2008 Macbook Pro and, recently, I've noticed that the fan (fans?) begins running from the moment the computer is powered-up. iStat tells me that both fans are running at about 2000 rpms, though I only hear a slight whoosing noise from the left side. I don't remember the fan running constantly, and I have noticed that my battery life seems worse than normal recently. Is this normal, and something I just haven't noticed until recently?

OS X :: Slow Startup Speed Of Mac Pro Due To Flash Card / Reader
Feb 24, 2009I have a two year old Mac Pro ( 2GB memory and 2GB RAM) which up until now has worked very well, extremely well really. Alas for some inexplicable reason it has decided to takes it's time coming out of the starting gate. It has gone from around 15 seconds to around 5 minutes. So far I have eliminated apps which I have not been using as well as a few startup items that I didn't really need.I have cleaned up my desktop so that there is only one Icon on it.
I have also de-fragged my startup drive.I have used Disk Utility which tells me that the disc is fine, and it seems to be working just fine when it is up and running. I have also unplugged my firewire and USB connections. I have run my cron scripts deleted all rotated log files and repaired disc permissions. Maybe I didn't need to, but heck, who knows, I am no expert. Maybe a reinstall may solve the problem or resetting the Pram may work. I don't really know for sure but I'll try anything just in case.

Apr 30, 2009Sorry for the title but I couldn't think of anything better. Hopefully I'll be able to explain my problem. I have a MPR 2.53 ghz, 4 gig ram, I'm using Safari 4.04. I am using the WIFI at a guesthouse in Thailand (but I had the same issue in China, Vietnam ...). I ran a speed test and it said download 7mb/sec and upload about 1mb/sec. I have an "app" that says bandwidth in 1.3kb/sec out 1.0kbs. I thought maybe it was Safari so I downloaded and installed Firefox. firefox gives me similar speeds. When I downloaded Firefox though I had a download speed of over 1mb/sec. But as soon as it finished downloading the speed went back to around 1kb/sec. I have rebooted my MBP many times. I did some Google searches but didn't find anything helpful.

Apr 10, 2009I have a WDS local network at my house. I use a Airport Extreme in my main part of the house and a Airport Express for my back part of the house i.e. the backyard. Now every two weeks or so my internet speed through my Airport Express slows down about half the speed but when I am connected trough the Airport Extreme my speed is normal. I know this because I test my connection very often. Now when I want the Airport Express to get back up to speed I have to unplug, and plug it back in. Then after awhile it starts to slow down again in a time period of two weeks or so.

Mar 4, 2010Have an Extreme base stations and express repeater connected to my DSL services. On my primary iMac connected via ethernet I get 5.25MBps speed. The speed on this computer is always constant. On the remote MacPro I get anywhere from 1.5MBps to 5MPps speed within a half hour of testing.

Apr 9, 2009I've got a real odd problem with safari 4. For some reason it is cutting my download speeds in about 1/2 from my server and many other places.
If I restart safari I will be able to download close to my 18 Mbps for a little bit but then it will just start to slow down and after about 30 minutes it will be down to about 6 - 8 Mbps.

Oct 20, 2009I have a macbook unibody 2008 2.4, I ungraded to snow leopard, Id say for the past 3 months any time I open up safari or firefox after I have 5 tabs open the computer runs slow as can be. The computer when I scroll the little pinwheel pops up before I can do anything, it has gotten so bad the pinwheel has to pop up when I type more then 5 words. It has gotten so bad that even after the browser is closed I have to reboot my computer before it will run normal again. I know its not my ram I upgraded to 4gb of ram and I do clean out history and defrag on weekly basis. Is there any solutions that wont require a reboot.
