Hardware :: External Speaker System For New IMac
Nov 5, 2010
A few months ago I bought :
iMac 27"
2.8 GHz Quad Core i7
8GB DDR3 SDRAM 2x4
2TB Serial ATA Drive
ATI Radeon HD 4850
Actually, still moving into it from the old one, haven't spent allot of time on it, hard to get out of the old one with my photoshop work. Anyhow, whats a good external speaker system for it? I find myself with the volume maxed out on the internal iMac speakers now, don't think it's too good to keep doing that. Is the amp in the iMac my only control over volume? Can I buy a speaker system of very good quality that may have amps within them so I can get more volume to them? I have a real top end stand alone stereo system, but doubt the iMac iTunes can be run through that.

I have a 2.1 Logitech Z4 setup, and the sound is only coming out of the left speaker. I have checked the wires, they are fine, and both speakers do work - but it could be the socket that's the problem. It's plugged into the line-in socket, I have put the output in System Preferences to Headphones, and everything is inserted correctly.
What do I do?
EDIT: My sound system is plugged into the headphones jack. I have tried putting headphones into the headphone jack and the sound also only comes out of the left earbud.

The tower speaker just doesn't cut it and I want to hook up my 5.1 Locitech speaker system. I couldn't find any Mac sound cards on newegg and am having trouble finding results anywhere else. What card is recommended by most Mac Pro users? My professions isn't in audio so it doesn't have to be perfect, just something to play games, music, and movies.

I have a Mac Pro and a set of Klipsch 4.1 Pro Media speakers/subwoofer with 1/8 Jacks for front and rear.
I'm coming from a Windows PC that had a sound card with both front and rear outputs.
Looking at the Mac Pro, it appears there is only 1 analog out jack?
How do I get all 4 speakers working with surround sound?

I currently have an early 2008 MacBook Pro hooked up to Harman Kardon SoundSticks ii. My cat is the biggest... well.. she knocked the soundsticks over and they broke. I am asking for advice on a new audio system that would sound great with my Mac. As of now I am leaning toward the AudioEngine A-5s.

I don't have room for a subwoofer and need a quality set of speakers to put on top of my desk. I plan on using them with a 13" MBP connected to a 24" Apple LED Cinema display.

I'm in the market for a speaker system for my new Mac Book Pro 17" and 24" Apple Cinema Display setup. Currently, I'm using really old speakers that, in my opinion, did fine. In other words, I didn't really do any sound studio like activities that warrants me to get the top of the line system.
Essentially, I'm just looking to upgrade (it is 7 years old). Is there anything out there right now that is "the best bang for the buck?" In other words, provide great sounds, it's innovative, it's essentially to this Apple setup, etc. etc.

I have an iPod Hi-Fi, and I would like to use it as a speaker for my Macbook. I just want to know whether this is feasible, and if so, what cable do I need to get the maximum out of my iPod Hi-Fi?

I was looking to do a simple speaker upgrade for my mac, and somewhere along the line it turned into me building an entry level hifi system.I have decided on the B&W 685 speakers and Rotel equipment. Keeping in mind that this is for a medium sized bedroom:
1. Is the difference between using an integrated amp versus a pre-amp and power amp setup that different considering the extra cost?
For the integrated setup I was looking at: Rotel RA-1062
For the pre/power amp setup: Rotel RC-1070 and Rotel RB-1072
2. How would playing an Apple Lossless file from the aux port on my powerbook compare to playing the actual cd from a quality player? I was looking at the Rotel RCD-1072 CD player.
3. I need cable recommendations. I want to bi-wire the speakers, connect my laptop to the amp, and possibly connect a CD player to the amp. I don't want to spend more than $200 on cables.

I have a logitech 5.1 surround sound with subwoofer with 5 speakers connected to my macbook os x 10.5.4 leopard and only 2 speakers give sound. Was told to go to the control panel of my windows operating system and go to surround settings and make sure that the speaker set up is set to 5.1 surround. By default it is set to 2 speaker output. How do I find its equivalent in the mac os x i.e the control panel that will permit me to set my speaker set up to 5.1 surround?

Is there any speaker system with built in Airport support that it can be used as a "multiple-speaker" from itunes?
I have my PC and my appletv streaming and I wanted to put something in my kitchen as well just wanted to figure out the most minimalist way to do it.

I bought Brand New Macbook pro 15" Late 2011 Ci7, this is incredible machine. But a month past and i started to notice a very strange behavior: When i using mac for resource "Eating" application or processes my computer starts to Heat-this is normal.
When i close all the apps here starts interesting) I have Istat installed, so i can see what temps are in my system. Computer is cooling, and when cpu reaches 50-55 degrees (Celsium, from 80 degrees, because of heavy load) ,my left speaker produces a single loud pop sound. (like something turning of may be)

I have a pare of powered KRK Rokit speakers which I connect to my iMac via the headphone port. Never had a problem with this connection, but today the port doesn't seem to be working.
In normal circumstances, as soon as I plug the speaker cable in the port, the internal speaker of the Mac would disabled itself (even if the KRKs are not powered). However, now I plug the cable it and the internal Mac speaker keeps running. It seems as if the port does not recognise that there is an external source connected.

I have an external bluetooth speaker from jawbone called jambox. From the start on I had the normal speaker volume like I also stil have it if I connected the bluetooth speaker with my iPod touch. But some day ago, the volume from my whole Mac (not just from iTunes) dropped through my Jawbone. It is not just about 40% of that, what I know of, that the Jawbone Jambox is able to bring. This problem exists through all audio / video programs on my Macbook Pro. So like in iTunes, also in VLC or MplayerX. Everywhere. The software sound of MacOS Lion is on maximum. Also the sound control of the jambox itself is reached. It seems like there is a protection against to high volume anywhere turned on which just do not allow me to turn up the volume beyond a specifc point of db. But, I can only repeat: The speaker is in a good shape. I am able to play music much more louder with my iPod paired. But just not with my macbook. I am looking for a "hidden" option to disable the maximum volume limitation of my Mac to the speaker.

I've noticed a faint buzzing sound through my external speakers when a charger is plugged in to the laptop. Removing the charge kills the noise and makes the sound crystal clear again. Doesn't bother me to much, but as my uni-macbook pro is plugged in most of the time I can see this near constant buzz getting on my nerves a bit in the future. Any ideas, looking back I experienced the same thing with my macbook.

I'm running out of space on my Mac Mini's disk because of all my iTunes video files. I am thinking about buying an enclosure for my spare 1 TB hard drive, and using it as the location of my iTunes library, but I wondered how it works with the Mac Mini's energy-savings mode. My Mini is set to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity, then wake when iTunes content is requested by my Apple TV or Airport Express. I like it, because it's very energy efficient that way! My question is, will the disks also sleep along with my computer, and will they wake properly when the computer wakes?

After owning my Imac for about 12 months or more now I've noticed lately that it has become much much slower. I expected it to slow down just like all computers once you have used up a fair bit of memory space but I haven't used up much at all. I've tried to avoid using up too much space on my Mac by using an external storage drive but I'm wondering if that has the opposite effect? I've got the usual apps that help the Mac to run efficiently and I've followed various threads that show how to optimize the mac so I'm assuming there isn't all that much tweaking left to do... could be wrong though. A long time ago (i'm not sure what got into me) but I downloaded the apple developer software, I don't intend on using it but i don't what the correct names of the apps are and I don't want to uninstall the wrong stuff. I have tested the speed of my Mac with and without the external memory drive but didn't find much difference, but perhaps my tests weren't entirely accurate.

Mine sounds muffled on the left when compared to the right speaker.
Its very noticeable when you play around in your balance settings (max left or max right) that the volumes are different.

Can anyone suggest which would be my best option for external backup? Would a RAID setup be good? I have two exactly the same hard drives laying around collecting dust, and would like to put them to use for an iMac. Could someone recommend a good external enclosure for these two? Which would be better - FireWire or USB2.0? I'm also interested in mirroring since I'd store important data on them, and want both drives to have a copy of each. Is there a disadvantage to that in terms of system's performance?

Long story short, My iMac stuffed up not long ago so I sent it to Apple to get it fixed (Apple Store Chadstone), I called them a week later, and Ive been told that they were still working on it. A few days later I called again, they finally found the issue (sort of) and decided to replace the logic board..anyway, I said OK, they later called me back saying they have replaced it but a new problem occurred, the audio/speaker is not functioning etc I said well I will just take it back and fix it myself because I need it for work, I took it back and this is what I found so far: iMacs serial number is gone! Oh also, on the repair report paper, it says I purchased this iMac on March 11 2009(March 11 is my birthday BTW), but I actually bought it in Nov 2008, so according to Apple Store, my iMac is now officially out of warranty.

I play movies stored on my iMac through my speaker system and HDTV using a Mini Display to HDMI cable plugged into my reciever. I'm currently piecing together a 5.1 seperates system but currently only have the front left, front right and centre speakers (3.0). I've played around to try and get the iMac to output though all three speakers but the audio only comes through the left and right channels and ignores the centre speaker completely. Even when I set the output in the 'Audio MIDI Setup' to 5.1 it still doesn't recognise a centre channel.Stereo output is fine but it would be nice to get the centre speaker in use rather than just sitting there in silence.
