OS X :: Using Sound Output - Only Sound From The Internal Speaker
Apr 26, 2009I woke up this morning and tried to watch a linked video on a webpage. I saw the video, but there was no sound (this had not been a problem the evening before). I am using USB soundsticks, so I checked to make sure that they were plugged in, and they were. I opened iTunes and sound came through the Soundsticks; I switched to the internal speaker and it worked there as well. When I tried the same with another embedded video, however, I only got sound from the internal speaker.
Has anyone had a similar problem or does anyone know how to fix this?
Desktops :: Sound Suddenly Switched To Being Internal Speaker Only?
Oct 26, 2009Peculiar problem. My sound suddenly switched to being internal speaker only, even though I have decklink HD Extreme card and was using it as my audio output the night before. Narrowed the problem down to anything being plugged in to the firewire ports - FW400 and FW800 ports and drives or even my Mini DV deck. When I plug anything into the firewire ports, trying to get to the sound settings in system preferences hangs, and all sound will only work on the internal speaker. This is a sudden problem and leaves me only being able to plug in esata external hard drives. There is some sort of conflict going on somewhere.

Feb 22, 2008I have a small issue on my iBook (G4) that's been driving me a bit crazy lately. I noticed a few months ago that when I selected a song/video on iTunes to play, I would get uneven volume output on my two internal speakers. I tried restarting iTunes, restarting the computer, etc. to no avail. In addition, sometimes this problem would not arise for a few days, and then suddenly start up again.
I then dug up the program Audio MIDI Setup and saw that the sliders were uneven . Once I slid them back together, I thought I had solved my problem. Nope! It came back, and I even saw that if I opened up Audio MIDI Setup right after the computer turned on, the sliders would be skewed even before opening iTunes or Safari or some other program that used audio.
I've come accustomed to manually balancing the volume output, but the irregularity of this problem occurring frustrates me. Attached is a screenshot of Audio MIDI Setup with the issue--note the Audio Output sliders.

Aug 23, 2014MBP 1 - 13" Mid 2012 MBP 2.5Ghz/i5/HD4000 (No internal speakers listed).
1. Reset SMC - No change.
2. Reset NVRAM - No change.
3. Apple Hardware Test - No problems found.
4. The same machine when booted in Windows (via Bootcamp/CSM-BIOS) plays perfectly and shows Cirrus Logic devices and the HDA devices. This should eliminate hardware issues.
5. I have checked for the Optical Audio microswitch being stuck, but that does not seem to be the case.
6. This was used with Apple Headphones which also have the microphone built-in [URL] ....

Apr 14, 2012I bought Brand New Macbook pro 15" Late 2011 Ci7, this is incredible machine. But a month past and i started to notice a very strange behavior: When i using mac for resource "Eating" application or processes my computer starts to Heat-this is normal.
When i close all the apps here starts interesting) I have Istat installed, so i can see what temps are in my system. Computer is cooling, and when cpu reaches 50-55 degrees (Celsium, from 80 degrees, because of heavy load) ,my left speaker produces a single loud pop sound. (like something turning of may be)

Aug 29, 2009I recently discovered after installing the new Snow Leopard OS that I did not have a bluetooth option under my system preferences. I own a mid 2008 Macbook Pro (pre-unibody, more info below) and I know that I've used it before. I recently took my computer in to be repaired by Apple because the keyboard and trackpad were inconsistently responsive, and to fix it they simply replaced the entire top panel (with the keyboard and trackpad). I have also checked under the system profiler and it says that there is no information available for my bluetooth...what exactly does this mean? Did they forget to reinstall it? or what?

Aug 20, 2009My Macbook has suddenly stopped having internal speakers in the sound preferences.When I turn it on, it plays that familiar synth chord sound to say all is ok, but it wont play any audio. So videos and itunes etc play but the sound isn't produced.When I try to turn the volume up or down, the indicator says the volume is up full, but I cannot adjust it. Underneath the volume measurement there is a little sign in white like a no entry sign, meaning that adjustment of volume is not available.I gues this must mean that the speakers have been disabled, but can't figure out how to enable them.

Apr 15, 2009so heres what happend. my macbook has been acting strange. freezing and sound not working at times. system preferemces quitting etc. and i just got it back from its thrid repair. THREE REPAIRS IN LESS THAN 3 MONTHS> so i was downloading a game for my psp when i went to go get a bagel in the kitchen. i left for no less than a minute and when i came back the screen was black. i thought it just dimmed itself but no. i moved the trackpad clicked on all buttons click the mouse button everything. i noticed the light wasnt throbbing so im sure it wasnt sleeping. the light was just pure white(the sleep light) so i waited like 3 minutes than shut it down. do u know whats happening. i know now i will be getting it replaced but until then im trying to keep it working well enough that i can watch a ********** vid on youtube.

I have checked the wires, they are fine, and both speakers do work - but it could be the socket that's the problem. It's plugged into the line-in socket, I have put the output in System Preferences to Headphones, and everything is inserted correctly.
What do I do?
EDIT: My sound system is plugged into the headphones jack. I have tried putting headphones into the headphone jack and the sound also only comes out of the left earbud.

Mac Pro :: Line Out / In Options In System Sound Preferences Are Missing
Sep 5, 2014My 2008 Mac Pro recently stopped producing any sound.
The startup chime is silent. No sound comes from the speakers at all and the line out/in options in system sound preferences are missing, although it still lists my Logitech webcam microphone and the volume meter for it responds to sound changes.
Could the sound chip on the logic board have stopped working?
Could it be a virus or a software conflict? I haven't updated the system recently or installed new software, but Skype has been acting erratically and has crashed a few times.
The missing line in/out devices in the sound preferences seems like it might be a hardware problem.
I have tried all of the normal things like checking cables and resetting pram but no change.
I have the same condition whether I boot into my primary drive or into the clone (made before the sound stopped working) on a separate drive or into Windows through Bootcamp.
If the logic board integrated sound is broken, can I add a sound card to take over the audio for everything (startup chime, audio from software and audiovisual sources, Skype, etc.)?

Apr 14, 2009I just bought a 2.4 MBP model a1260. When I got home i noticed the volume keys were not working, and then i noticed none of the function keys were working properly. (example, f12 shows an eject CD symbol). So, the keys are working but not doing the standard functions such as volume and brightness.
I have check and unchecked (and restarted) the "use all f1, f2 as standard function keys" to no result.
Some other wierd things that seem to be related are:
1. In the SOUND window in SYS PREFS all sound effects are greyed out. Under OUTPUT and INPUT it says no devices found.
2. When i go to the itunes store in itunes and i double click on a song, it wont play. Not only is there no volume, but song wont play. Its the same with my own music from my cds.
3. When i insert a DVD no volume control shows up.
And the last superwierd thing (haha) is that I reloaded leopard and when the computer restarted up after install there was no OSX music that normally plays as the video flys thru the starfield.
Headphones have no audio either.Sorry so long. The computer has no warranty of course.

I can mute by going to System Preferences but I don't want to do this.Before I changed the volume in System Preferences, the keyboard keys worked fine for volume adjustment. Apr 21, 2012I am using Macbook Pro 13'', Mid 2010. Three days ago I attempted to connect the my macbook with an external speaker. It worked, but unfortunately, the setting remains at Digital Out. I first tried plugging my headphone, but I get this static voice, or sort of distorted noise (while playing no music of course); when I played music with my headphone on, I could hear my music along with this static or distorted noise. When I change the settings to Use audio port for Sound Input, it uses the internal speaker to play my music with no static or distorted noise. I have confirmed that my headphones have no problems.
Next I tested the sound on bootcamp window xp. The sound was working perfectly, headphones were working perfectly.
The only problem is when I use mac. When I attempt to increase the volume or decrease it, there would be a speaker symbol with a stop sign at the bottom. Whenever I play an audio and put the headphones out, there would be a red light but will disappear if im not playing any music. I have tried the toothpick trick and the headphone jack trick. Both fails.

When I plugged in speakers or headphones the volume keys work as normal. But with just internal the little picture on screen comes up so the keys work but it doesn't affect the volume?
