One thing I love about the iPod Hi-Fi is that it has an optical audio input. It sounds incredible with the optical audio from a Mac, Apple TV, or sat TV receiver. I would love to have that for my Mac's connected speakers because Macs of course have digital optical out. However, are there any speakers out there, intended for computer use (size and whatnot) that have an digital optical input?

However, I was wondering if I could replace the existing satellite speakers with bookshelf speakers (like Klipsch RB-10 s). View 3 Replies View RelatedI have plugged a toslink cable between my 5.1 amplifier and my iMac, but I would like to be able to find a software that would let me switch between digital out and the internal iMac speakers (which are quite good actually!)
I know it is a Mac OS driver limitation since Windows 7 (via Bootcamp) let me choose the output. In Mac OS once I plugg something, "Internal speakers" output option disappear from sound preferences, audio midi setup, HalLAB, .... This causes unnecessary wear and tear on the audio port from constantly inserting and removing the cable to switch from built in speakers to external audio system.
I was in Audio MIDI Setup and I clicked one of the checkboxes to add a device to something or something like that and all the devices vanished from the list and sound stopped working. After closing Audio MIDI Setup I am unable to open it again, even after restarting and getting all the updates. Skype now freezes and doesn't load. Sound preferences also have trouble and freeze up if I try to load them. I would really like to have sound from my computer again!

I have iTunes 10.6.1 (7) an Airport Extream Version 6.0 Airport Utility (600.92) That I use with two airport express stations, an Apple TV 2nd Generation with latest software up date. Also have Ipad 3rd Generation and two I phone 4's. Issue: After installing the latest Airport Utility software update I'm unable to connect to my remote speakers in iTunes. The speakers are visible in the pop up menu but iTunes times out when trying to connect. If I use remote to select Apple TV and then via Apple TV select my Computers Library I'm able to play music on the Apple TV / Home Speakers... but still not the Airport Express Stations.
When using remote on the iPhone or iPad the speakers are visible as well but I'm unable to select them... iTunes times out. I can steam music from that is on my iPhone or iPad to each individual speaker, but multiple speaker control is not available and the music from my library is not available. I believe the problem is in the Airplay feature of iTunes and I believe the problems arise when you install the latest version of Airport Utility. You can play on remote speakers, only one at a time, and only if you have the music on a stand alone device (iPhone or iPad)... in summary, bypass iTunes and you can be successful... marginally successful.
I've been having problems with the optical drive on my G5 Quad for the last few months. It makes a clanking noise every few minutes, similar to the sound it makes when you put in a cd. Also, every now and then when I put in a cd it just doesn't read it, and it makes itunes crash. The drive is an LG HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4165B. I have read lots of bad things about this drive on the internet, and it also happens to be much slower at importing dvds than the pioneer drives that are (or were) also shipping with some G5s.
I finally went down to my apple store, in The Netherlands. I explained the problem to the tech guy, and he said they would replace it under warranty. However, when I asked if it was possible to get a pioneer drive, he said they had no control over which brand they receive on replacement parts, but that almost always they get pioneers. Well, I took it in and they replaced the drive. They refused to do a test on it though, arguing that they were fixing another G5 and wouldn't be able to hear the noises I was complaining about (there was also a strange noise coming form one of the fans). The guy suggested that I brought it back some other time, and said he was absolutely sure he wouldn't find anything (turns out these guys also happen to be clairvoyants, or so they seem to think!) Coming from America I find it really hard to believe how rude and stupid the apple people can be at this store in The Hague, but unfortunately I can't avoid having to deal with them while I live here (there are endless horror stories about this particular shop). I don't have a car, so I had to take a cab there and back, which ran to about � 20, plus all the trouble and the wasted time. But sure, why not just bring it again some other time like the guy said?............
I'm currently in the market for some computer speakers for my aluminum macbook.Basically looking for the best pair of 2.1 speakers for under $200.I been eyeing up the Harmon Kardon Soundsticks II and Logitech Z-2300.One thing that kinda amazes me is that there have really been no updates to either of these sets of computer speakers.I really like the look of the soundsticks.What do you guys recommend?
View 5 Replies View RelatedJust set up a new Mac Pro (8-core) and plugged in my old M-Audio powered speakers (about 10yrs old but still going strong!). I use a mini-jack splitter cable that outputs stereo RCA to the speakers, plugged into the speaker port on the nMP. There is a constant, low hum coming out of one of the speakers; it sounds a little like CPU noise and it is NOT affected by volume settings from the Mac or the speaker knob. It's the right-side speaker which is unpowered, connected to the left unit via speaker wire (the left unit has the power switch and audio inputs and is not affected.)
I've tried moving the speaker wire up and away from power cables (two Dell monitors directly next to the speakers) but that doesn't work; it doesn't sound quite like a DC hum anyway though. The speakers aren't heavily shielded (they usually pick up interference from an iPhone placed too close) so maybe it's always going to be an issue. I used to have them plugged into a 2006 Mac Pro via an analog mixer which I've removed from the chain.
I am going to buy an iMac for my desktop computer. if my Bose 3.2.1 computer speakers will work with the Apple?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo today I managed to drop my MacBook a short distance to the ground. I can't believe I did this. The computer was asleep at the time and, as far as I can tell, the internal HDD is perfectly fine. After I dropped the computer it wouldn't at first wake up from sleep. After removing the battery and replacing it, it booted back from the state saved to the HDD. My problem is that my optical drive makes noises now. I never use it, but whenever the machine tries to access it (waking from sleep, launching Disk Utility, etc) it makes noises as if the eject mechanism is running constantly or something else like that. The case also slightly bulges where the drive is. Now, if it doesn't work ever again I will only be slightly sad. I haven't tried to put a disc in it yet, but because of a previous spill by a previous answer the fibers around the opening are so stiff that getting a disc out of the drive when it works is a pain. Any ideas of what might be wrong and how to possibly fix it? I haven't tried resetting the drive, I don't have the time tonight.

The monitor's audio interface connects to my iMac via the headphone jack on the back of the system.
My friend is looking into buying the new 27" iMac Core i7 to replace his PC desktop. The only thing holding him back is that he has an analog surround sound system he uses for his speakers. I am having a hard time myself finding a converter that can make his speakers work in the iMac's optical digital output port. Any products out there that will do that?

Situation: no sound out from speakers in admin and user account and newly created account. Headphones work, startup chimes work on speakers.
Go to Sound in Preferences and only shows Digital Out for output. Should show Internal Speakers. Ran Diskwarrior and Applejack and zapped pram. Took mac apart and confirmed speakers wired correctly which is verified by the start up chimes being audible on the internal speakers. tested all accounts and created new account all with the same results. Did search of Google and MacRumor. Found one unaswered post indicating same problem. Had same problem with another macbook pro, ran same steps, take apart, confirm wiring setup, Diskwarriored, applejacked and zapped pram and it fixed the problem. I'm not sure what else to try. Did check Audio Midi Setup util and it also did not see the internal speakers.
the external speakers (and the earphones) I use for my i-mac suddenly stopped playing sound from my imac. They do work though when I plug them to the i-pod. My imac speakers work perfectly. Any ideas what's happening?

The mouse pointer will move, but I cannot click on items, nor will the dock icons magnify until 2-3 minutes after. I have done a clean install now and have taken out the 4890. Elgato products don't do it. TiVo does it but I don't like the monthly fee and they want me to get rid of my Verizon FIOS Box.
What would be even better is a DVR that has a HDMI in and out that connects from my Verizon FiOS HD Cable Box to the DVR then from the DVR into the HDTV.

i bought a mini dvi to dvi adapter off ebay. when i plug in my dvi desktop monitor it works fine.
when i plug in my dvi to vga adapter, it does not work on either my vga desktop monitor or my tv. is there setting or something i need to change to make this work?
With my PPC G5 the microphones audio is either too low or none existant. I have gone into system preferences and set the input audio to the max with no change. Does the G5 have a special audio input impedance or is there another setting I should investigate? The output analog audio is working 100%.
