Hardware :: AVCHD Playback - Highly Processor Intensive
Aug 19, 2008
I recently purchased a new 2.8 GHz iMac. I know that AVCHD is highly processor intensive but surely I should be able to play back Full HD video on a brand new computer! Using Toast Titanium 9 to play the files I'm getting ~20 fps on a 30 fps stream! Editing is not an issue because Final Cut/Apple Intermediate Codec take care of playback but I want to be able to archive the unedited AVCHD and that means I need to be able to view the raw files later. My CPU averages ~25% idle while playing back the video. Does that mean the video card is the bottleneck?

managing to play 1080i raw AVCHD-format .mts video files on a 2GHz C2D mini, I'd like to hear how.I'm having limited success playing .mts files on a firewire external (FW400) in VLC. I'd like to be able to do it without dropping frames, and thought it was possible. I can play 1080 Quicktime smoothly, but not .mts at the moment.

I wanted to do some research on this processor, do you guys know what is the processor model code for the iMac's processor?
Is it a mobile processor or a desktop processor?
What is the difference between this one and this one?

After reading some of the threads here with people being very happy with their minis, I decided to head down to the Apple store and give it a go. I used each of the computers (a Mac mini, Mac Pro, and iMac) for about 10 minutes (which seems like forever when you are in a crowded retail store) doing things I would normally be doing at home. The iMac was fine, as expected. It handled just about everything with satisfactory speed, even thought it was the base 24" model with no fancy processors or graphics.
Video
The Mac Mini though was quite disappointing. To render a 1 minute video in iMovie it took around 4 minutes. The Mac Pro did the job on the same exact movie (sample file found on every display computer) in about 45 seconds. Another big difference was apparent, while the movies were rendering, the Mac Pro was completely responsive and I was able to load iPhoto, Pages, Numbers, Safari, and iTunes. Each opened up within seconds, and each interface was running smoothly as if nothing was happening in the background (granted for a short period as the movie finished rendering quickly).............

Given the Air's current mothball status, I'd buy an antiglare 13" MBP in a heartbeat. But black slab of highly reflective glass = no sale. They do it on the leviathan 17", and now on the top spec 15" (or lower spec if you BTO) albeit at a cost of 120 notes. But no 13". Can anyone provide even a semi-rational (i.e. practical) explanation as to why not, or is just the worst side of Apple we're seeing here?

I have a new Mac Pro (standard 2.8 configuration with 3 X 250GB in software RAID0) at my cable station at college. I was expecting this thing to be a real screamer, but I find myself a bit disappointed. Don't get me wrong, it's still quite fast. But for CPU-intensive task in Final Cut Studio, I find it to be slower than it should be. For example, compressing a 6 GB DV file for an iPhone is taking 32 minutes. CPU usage is only around 30% per core. I've never been able to drive CPU usage above this level in any task (Handbrake, Final Cut rendering, etc.) I know that not all software is able to fully use all of the cores, but this doesn't make sense to me. Is this normal performance? Or could something wrong with the Mac Pro?

I have a late 2008 unibody Macbook Pro 15" with, unfortunately, only 2GB RAM. My work requires a very intensive internet flash application that will usually max out my RAM, and in combination with certain other applications, my computer becomes so laggy that I cannot work.
This has me wondering... which browser is best for running intensive flash applications? I also like to run lots of random pages at once, so I'll do that as well, either in the same browser, or concurrently in a different one.

Computer: Macbook Pro 15" 2.0Ghz with Rosetta, ATI X1600 graphics card, 1 gig RAM.
Problem: There will be horizontal pixel lines when the temperature goes above 50 degrees celsius. The computer will freeze in games randomly (particularly Warcraft III).
What I've noticed:
Apple+Q and Apple+option+escape does not do anything. Because it forces me to restart, I have no logs.
Other Macs can run in temperatures over 60 degrees celsius perfectly fine while mine cannot. When I put it on an A/C unit set at 40 degrees fahrenheit, I don't get any horizontal lines or freezes. (maybe the mac shuts off things at a particular temperature to prevent overheating and the set temperature was lowered)
Freezes vary from instantly going to a black screen, a green screen with vertical white lines, or just a normal freeze.
In a normal freeze, if I have iTunes playing in background, it won't be affected and will continue to play the song. (background processes may still be fine).
The green and black freezes will make the same sound repeat over and over.
Warcraft III (in-game) will sometimes start flickering in large random areas of the screen and it usually leads to a freeze.
Sometimes it will freeze even when the temperature isn't hot. (without warning)
What I've done:
reinstalled the OS and just installed Warcraft III to test display (still froze)
replaced the thermal paste
cleaned out the dust

I've had numerous, yet infrequent, kernel panics with my 2010 15" MacBook Pro running Snow Leopard. I have a dual-core i7 model with the NVIDIA GeForge GT 300M. They always happen when I'm using a graphic-intensive program (Motion, Photoshop, and - believe it or not - when running PowerPoint presentations). They have all happened when using an external monitor or projector as well - although I rarely work without an external monitor plugged in, so it could be a coincidence on that. The maddening thing is that they don't happen all the time (well, I guess that's good) - sometimes they come at the start of the day when I'm first in a program, some come later in the day, some come when I've been using a program intensively (as in working in Photoshop for hours), and some just seem to happen right away when I first start using the program. There will be days I get multiple ones, and then not see the panics again for weeks and weeks.Â

I just purchased Final Cut Express 4.0 and hooked my new Canon Vixia HG20 up to the computer, only to have it NOT log and transfer the clips! I am so frustrated! I have tried the easy set-up and tried all of the Apple Codec settings. I read somewhere that you need to upgrade to 4.0.1, but I can't seem to find anywhere to do this and it is not coming up in my Software Update menu. When I did my homework to try and find an editing program that would be compatible with my camera, FCE 4 kept coming up and no one was seeming to have any trouble, so I am guessing it is some kind of setting that I am overlooking. Can anyone shed some light on this annoying little problem?

I'm debating whether to go with the Imac of the Mac pro to do some amateur photo and video editing with my new Canon HF 11 HD camcorder. I have NEVER worked with video before and I'm a little nervous pulling the trigger after visiting several Apple stores. I've heard some nightmares about editing high definition video in the AVCHD format. I guess I'm asking this is editing with AVCHD possible with an IMAC? Are the new 24inch IMACs going to be power enough? Would you recommend a powerful Mac Pro instead? Do you see any issues with the AVCHD format?

I'm trying to use an AVCHD camera to stream to UStream as a webcam.
UStream doesn't detect the camera, even when change the Adobe Flash Player settings and the UStream capture device settings.
How can I get it to work using USB?
Is it also possible to use the HDMI port on the camera?
Is there such a cable that converts HDMI to Firewire 800?

Does anyone have experience using Final Cut Express (FCE) with AVCHD files on a Mac mini? Editing AVCHD is CPU intensive and Core 2 Duo instead of i5 on the mini is disappointing. But in practice, is the performance acceptable? I don't do large projects. The Mac Pro is out of my price range.

Well, till the upgrade to FCPX 10.1.3 i have problems with importing footage from my Sony VG30 ( .MTS AVCHD files). From the past, i just copy the file from the SD card on the computer and then import it in FCPX. When i do that, i can't import it, but there are audio bugs (parasite sounds). From the past, that method also work on FCPX 10.1.1 but now i'm on 10.1.3 i can't see the content of the SDCard, arriving to AVCHD folder, FCPX will no more import or recogniste it as video media.Â

I've had conflicting answers on this at the Apple Store today so I'd like to ask the question on here again. I would like to use a Mac for work and consequently would prefer the greater portability of the 13" model (plus it fits in my Tumi bag and the 15" doesn't).
However, at home the computer will be used for editing of AVCHD hi def movies which will be burnt to blu-ray. I will also use the computer for editing of 15mp RAW files from my dSLR camera. The computer will be attached to a 24" dell monitor so screen real estate is not an issue.
I want to emphasise that the video and photo editing are _not_ work related and are for my personal pleasure only (hobby).
Is the 13" up to the job? The lack of a discrete gpu is my main concern. One of the guys at the genius bar told me that without the discrete gpu Aperture 2 can really start to slow down and its quite annoying.

Is it possible to change the default behaviour of wiki calendars to be hidden instead of visible. I have a wiki with a calendar with quite may calendars in it. The problem is that it gets very clotted when all event in all of them are shown. You can untick the box next to the calendar to hide it, but the problem is that this does not stay after a refresh or logout when viewing via a webbrowser. If I use the iCal client, a hidden calendar stays hidden (in iCal, not on web)
What I would like to do is change so "hidden" or "unchecked" is the default on the server.Â
On a client using iCal the setting for Checked or Unchecked is stored in :Â
user/Library/Calendars/C9BE5C0A-6EED-48D7-97F8-6DB02EA6A55A.calendar/Info.plist (your numbers will be different ) And the specific command in info.plist is:
<key>Checked</key>
<integer>1</integer>Â
As an alternative to change the default behaviour on the server for all calendars, changing this setting for each of the calendars would be possible if I only could find out how!?

Just updated to 10.1.2. My typical workflow is as follows:Â
1. Copy AVCHD folder (with all files and file structure) from a SD Card to ext HD
2. Import AVCHD folder (with all files and file structure) from ext HD to FCXÂ
But all of a sudden, when I look to import new footage that I just copied to my ext HD, I no longer have an option to import an entire AVCHD folder (with the file in it). FCX doesn't even show the AVCHD folders on my ext HD.Â
HOWEVER -Â When I copy a newly created AVCHD file to my desktop, FCX sees those files (though I don't have the option to import and entire folder filled with the AVCHD files).Â
I have an entire ext HD full of archived AVCHD folders from SD cards. I thought this was a good way to have back up files (I also have these AVCHD folders on another back up cloud drive), but now it looks like I can't even access them with the new FCX update.Â
