how to download AVCHD from my Sony Handycam HDR camera - I can get the camera recognized on the desktop but am unable to find it in iMovie (11) to import it?

I am desperate to get some HD AVCHD footage off my new(ish) camcorder on to my iMac.
Neither iMovie nor iMove 6HD can transcribe AVCHD so I recently bought Final Cut Express 4.0.
This package at least accesses the movies on the HDD on the camcorder, but when I use the Log and Transfer or Capture facilities Final Cut lets me select a clip but when it tries to transfer it the application just crashes.
I'm pretty frustrated because I just went to shot a bunch of footage with my Sony HD camcorder (Model: HDR-HC1) and when I wen to go plug it in, I realized that the new macbooks do not have a FireWire port! I can't believe that I missed this. I guess I didn't really think of it until now.

I have a Sony DCR-PC100 Camcorder that uses mini DV tape for recording, and am trying to get the video onto my mac. I have tried in iMovie '06,'08 and Final Cut Express, and I keep getting the same problem. I connect the camera via firewire, and set the camera to VTR. The app recognizes the camera (Final Cut even specifies the model number correctly) and can access it enough so that when you hit play it starts the camera playing. But it never gets video or audio coming into the computer, instead it just keeps the capture preview as black or blue. Eventually it just color wheels for a while and freezes or has to be shut down. I am using an iMac G5, but have tried it on an Intel MacBook Pro, and the same problem happens. I also tried it on a PC and it worked fine, so I dont think it is the camera, but I have a lot of video to upload, so I need to do it on my iMac. Does anyone know why this would be happening, and what some possible solutions would be?

I'm trying to import sony fs-700 video into fcpx. I haven't had any problem until today. For some reason it just shows the file structure and the AVCHD video file and won't let me import.

I have a Samsung external drive from which I can play and view these small discs that are not compatable with iMac. I need to upload from these discs to a New Project or a New Event in iMovie. I cannot figure a way to upload for editing and produce a finished movie. My iMac forced me to get a Canon HF-R100 camcorder with an SD card for the iMac SD slot.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm debating whether to go with the Imac of the Mac pro to do some amateur photo and video editing with my new Canon HF 11 HD camcorder. I have NEVER worked with video before and I'm a little nervous pulling the trigger after visiting several Apple stores. I've heard some nightmares about editing high definition video in the AVCHD format. I guess I'm asking this is editing with AVCHD possible with an IMAC? Are the new 24inch IMACs going to be power enough? Would you recommend a powerful Mac Pro instead? Do you see any issues with the AVCHD format?

how I could connect my mini dv camcorder to my mac and transfer the video to the computer. My camcorder only came with cord for playback on TV and the power cord, but nothing for the computer, especially a Mac. The manual refers to a Dv cable (hURL....) and says "When using a DV cable, be sure to use the optional JVC VC-VDV206U or VC-VDV204U DV cable depending on the type of DV connector (4 or 6 pins) on the PC". Currently running Mavericks with Thunderbolt and a FireWire 800 port.

Basically I've got my mac mini (1.5 core solo) going optical SPDIF into my Sony Surround amp (6.1) But If I play music from itunes i don't get 2.1 I get 2.0. I've been arsing around with Audio Midi Setup all evening to no avail, whatever I do it won't let me do anything other than stereo left and right, which of course is bloody annoying because it means the bass channel is completely missing.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just replaced my HDTV with a new Sony Bravia 32EX500 (Full HD, 1080p). My previous TV (HD Ready, 720p) was linked to my 2008 iMac with a VGA cable (with a mini-DVI to VGA adapter on the Mac end). It worked perfectly fine, but I can't get it to work with the new TV. Could you please tell me what resolution, frequency, and colours I should use to make it work?
Please not that I do not want a HDMI cable. I know it'd be better and easier, but my computer is quite far away from the TV and an HDMI cable of that length would be way too expensive. I'd rather find a way to make it work with the existing VGA cable. I just need to find the right settings for that VGA input. The TV doesn't recognize the signal right now.
I'm using an iMac OS X 10.2.8. When I plug in my Sony Cybershot (4.1 Mega Pixels) digital camera, the iMac will not read the ScanDisk Memory Stick Pro Duo (512 MB). If I remove the memory card it will read the internal memory of the camera. When I first bought the memory stick it worked just fine but now I get these two error messages.
"A disk attempting to mount as Unkown has failed verification or has failed to mount. use Disk Utilities to check the disk and correct any errors"

This is my first post here at MacRumors.com and I'm quite happy to be here posting as it's a good sign for myself and Apple. I am a Windows user for 15 years and Apple really has come so far in recent years that it is maybe time for change. There are a few problems and I'd like if you have the time to give your opinion:In recent months and especially during the time of the latest MacBook Pro I was pretty impressed and tempted to buy a MBP 17" to upgrade my 2007 Sony 15" Core2Duo Vaio. The time has come for an upgrade in April 2010 as I simply cannot wait any longer, I have become to involved in following stories here at MacRumors and even looking at Sony's offerings.
View 10 Replies View RelatedI just got a Mac Mini (March 2009 model) and want to connect it via Firewire to my Sony TRV-22 camcoder. The camcorder has a Mini DV Firewire jack on it (I think this is called a 4-pin connector sometimes too). But on the Mac Mini, I can't tell if I need a 6-pin or a 9-pin. Can someone point me to a good cable so I can dump some MiniDV tapes into iMovie?
