May 21, 2009i have a MBP uniboddy and a 24" LED cinema display. Is there a way for me to connect my old 17" display so i have 2 eksternal displays? (the 17" dispaly has DVI connection)

I am running out of screen real-estate for my secondary and want to get a 3rd monitor. The only problem is that there is not way to upgrade the graphic cards in the MBP. My question is: How can i have a total of 3 displays all displaying different images(ie. not mirrored).

Jun 21, 2012I keep seeing articles since yesterday stating that the new MBP retina display supports 3 external monitors and the new Macbook Air supports two (through just one ThB port?) but how come no one says anything about the new regular MBP's support? If the Air supports two isn't the regular MBP also supposed to be able to work with two external monitors?

Oct 28, 2009I have the new macbook unibody, and use it from time to time to dsiplay things to an external montior, plasma, projector, etc. Using a mini-display adapter to a converter to get s-video was a challenge, but I figured it out. I have used this many times, as I am a DJ and need s-video out to connect to most devices.I was at an event saturday night, and the display on the external device (projector) kept displaying my desktop, NOT the external feed.
It was NOT set up for mirroring, as it seems like the displays were 'switched'. I had my desktop on the projector, and my external on my macbook pro monitor. I tried to fool around with arrangement and resolution, but to no avail. I understand that sometimes you have to drag your source to the right (of left) to get it to display on the external, and this was done, but it was still reversed.I know it was something simple to get the 2 switched back to the way it should be, but I could not figure it out. Any advice? None of my apple buds can figure this out.

Jun 7, 2010I just plugged in my Cinema Display to my MBP for the first time, and for a while couldn't figure out why the heck the computer wasn't recognizing it (though maybe I'd gotten a bad MDP/DVI adaptor).
Then I'd noticed I'd set it via gfxCardStatus to use Intel graphics only. I released it to Dynamic -- and voila! Display recognized. Interestingly, it now also will not accept being set back to Intel only with the monitor connected.

Aug 12, 2010I have a blackbook running 10.6.4 with a GMA 950 that I use dual monitors with. If I use the extended desktop mode, and drag a safari window with a flash player onto the external display it will freeze and become unusuable (can't interact with it). The audio will still play through the speakers, and dragging the window back onto the main display brings back the flash functionality. This is a fairly new problem, it never used to happen before.

Apr 21, 2012My late 2011 MBP (lion 10.7.3) used to connect to external displays through a VGA cable. It has stopped doing so since recently and I am trying to find out why, and how to fix it. The only changes I've applied to the system are (1) connect to a Thunderbolt display and (2) installed gfxCardStatus. The MBP and Thunderbolt display work flawlessly together, with network, USB, and firewire connections operating. gfxCardStatus has noticably increased my battery life (so I recommend it) and I'm aware that it needs to be in dynamic or dedicated GPU mode for external displays. The VGA external displays do not work when gfxCardStatus is running in either dynamic or dedicated mode, or when I disable gfxCardStatus completely so that it does not show on the process list.

Hardware :: External Displays With Similar Pixel Density To 17" MBP Display?
May 30, 2010've got a 17" MacBook Pro, native resolution 1920x1200, which is quite high in terms of pixel density (132 PPI). I have a 24" external Samsung display, also 1920x1200, which means the pixel density is a lot lower (94 PPI). It works fine, but (as you might expect), screen items increase in size rather noticeably when I drag from the laptop display to the external display. (The 24" LCD Apple Cinema Display is also 1920x1200, so also 94 PPI and the same thing would happen). I've been looking all over the place, and I can't seem to find an external display in the 20-24" range that has a resolution higher than 1920x1200. Ideally I'd like to find a display with the same amazing pixel density, so everything is the same size on both my laptop display and on the external display. I don't know what that would be--probably something like 2048x1152 on a 20" or 22", and 2560x1600 for a 24". Even Apple's 30" Cinema Display at 2560x1600 (or what I imagine will be the new 27" LCD coming out later this summer, probably at 2560x1600) would suffer from this problem, because while the resolution is great, the screen size is so large that the pixel density would still be lower than 132 PPI and once again screen items would increase in size when moved from the laptop monitor to the external monitor. I don't really care about screen size or cost. I'd buy a 20" display, or a 30" display, if the pixel density were identical to (or at least close to) the pixel density of my MacBook Pro. Anybody know where I can find something like this?

Aug 28, 2009Many are having issues with font smoothing not working correctly on external displays with SL 10.6.
I researched this issue and found this blog posting:

the blog itself discusses the issue, and the fix is found in the comments.
Basically, for now the fix is to open Terminal App and enter:
"defaults -currentHost write -globalDomain AppleFontSmoothing -int 2″
without the quotes, and hit return.
a log out or restart might be required.
this fix seems to stick even after re-boots and shut-downs.
MacBook Pro :: Running 2 External Monitors On Unibody
Jan 16, 2009I'm looking to run two extra screens off of my unibody 15" MBP while still using the screen on the notebook itself for intensive video-editing between FCP and the adobe series. I understand the maximum resolution the mini-dvi port can handle is 1920x1200--no problem. Now, does the maximum resolution change at all if I am running two external monitors (one using the mini DVI port and the other using a USB port via VGA/DVI adaptor to USB).
Can the graphics card handle running three screens at once along with FCP,After Effects, and Illustrator? Can the USB port also push 1920x1200? Or does the USB port on the MBP (I understand each adapter can have different capacities) have a different limit? Or is that 1920x1200 limit the maximum a sole mini-DVI cord can push? You might just say, hey buy a 30" ACD and use the usb/mini-dvi ports to run that at an even GREATER resolution. But alas, I cannot afford to do that yet.

When i press search for displays my screen goes blue and then returns to the normal desktop and the external screen keeps saying check signal cable.
Already checked the cables there al in properly....

Mar 4, 2009I am setting up a new 17 inch macbook pro for a friend. He uses a 24 inch LCD external monitor so we purchased the mini display port to dvi adapter (as opposed to the mini display port to dual link dvi adapter for 30 inch monitors). However, I am at home setting up his computer using my external monitor which is the 30 inch dell monitor. For some reason, the maximum resolution I can get is 1280x800 on the external 30 inch monitor. I figured I should at least be able to get 1920x1200 resolution, right?? Does anyone know what may be going on here. I know you're able to switch between video cards on the unibody macbook pros, how do I do that as well?

Aug 7, 2009I started this situation with a bootable hard drive that I removed from a 4,1 (mid 2008) and a brand new unibody MacBook Pro. What I wanted to do was use Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the old drive to the new MBP. I used CCC to clone the drive to the new one and repaired permissions on the internal drive and tried booting from it. No Luck. I figured this was stupid to do and I could just use migration assistant so I decided to reinstall Leopard on the unibody. Unfortunately when I attempt to boot from the DVD it doesn't go past a blank grey screen. I also tried holding down option to open the boot manager and select the DVD, when hit enter over the DVD it freezes. The interesting thing is that when I connect the old drive to the unibody using an enclosure I can boot from the external drive no problem. I tried using another computer to install leopard on the unibody over firewire and the installation went fine but when I start the unibody it doesn't go past a blank grey screen. I am also positive the hard drive isn't damaged or anything because when I go to the boot manager after leopard is installed the internal drive shows up but when I select it, it freezes. I have tried resetting the PRAM, NVRAM, repairing the disk (which is successful). When I try to boot into single user mode the computer freezes when loading the text. Another interesting thing is that when do boot from the external drive it goes through verbose mode every time and I never choose to do that. Right now I am attempting to clone drive using Super Duper to new drive and see what happens.

Jun 26, 2009Just got a 17" unibody to replace my 15" Classic. It appears that the 17" can't output 1920x1200 over the mini DisplayPort to DVI connection, rather displaying 1920x1080. The 15" Classic has no problem outputting 1920x1200 which is the native resolution of this display (an LG L246WP).
What can I do? I tried downloading SwitchResX and fiddling around with that to no avail.

May 7, 2010Well my unibody macbook display decided to screw up last night, it was working fine last night no problem. Connected to a external monitor. I fell asleep last night with front row left on, obviously it went to sleep and then I woke up and the screen was black. Now the LED lights are working, my external display is also working. The display settings recognize a screen being present (when I click detect displays and gather windows - 2 windows appear). Ive reset PRAM, SMC, reseated the RAM, control+shift+eject (which just made the screen flicker a little after turning it back on) and Im out of ideas. Its out of warranty and about about 18months old.

Mac Pro :: How To Deactivate One Of Two Displays Under OS X
Oct 15, 2010First, I need to say that, regarding my problem, I wasn't sure if I should post in this section or in the 'MacOSX' one, but like I'm facing this problem on my Mac Pro 4,1. So, I have a 8-core Mac Pro 4,1 with an Apple HD4870 to which are connected 2 screens: The main one is a Dell U2410 (1920x1200, via mDP to DP adapter) that I use under OSX for photography retouching with DxO. The other one is a 27'' (1920x1080, DVI) I only use for gaming under bootcamp.
When under bootcamp, I only need to turn off the Dell and the desktop is resized for only 1 display. My problem is that, under OsX, even when the 27'' is turned off, the desktop is extended to this display, I can't find a way to deactivate the 27''. I can't even set the displays as 'mirrors', as they have different heigts in pixels (1200 vs 1080), and then I get a Dell resized to 1080. The only solution I have right now is to disconnect the DVI cable of the 27'' when using the computer under OsX.

Mar 5, 2008A lot people expect have cam with the new cinema displays but what about mic? I use my sister imac yesterday and the mic are amazing. I call with skype sitting on the chair and receive the voice great and of course the cam.
