MacBook Pro :: How Many External Displays Does The Retina Support
Jun 14, 2012
How many external displays dose the Retina MBP support? I have herd conflicting information about this, an apple store employee told me that it could support 2 thunderbolt displays while simultaneously running a HDMI connected display (witch would be awesome if true) but I am extremely skeptical, that seems like to much for one GPU.

I keep seeing articles since yesterday stating that the new MBP retina display supports 3 external monitors and the new Macbook Air supports two (through just one ThB port?) but how come no one says anything about the new regular MBP's support? If the Air supports two isn't the regular MBP also supposed to be able to work with two external monitors?

I have two questions:
1. Is it possible to use two external displays either mirrored or not and turn off the retina display, and if so how it is done?
2. Is it possible to close the MBP and use an external keyboard while using two external displays?
I am using a music production DAW Persons Studio One-2 Pro and it would be great to be able to have this type of a setup.

I have a blackbook running 10.6.4 with a GMA 950 that I use dual monitors with. If I use the extended desktop mode, and drag a safari window with a flash player onto the external display it will freeze and become unusuable (can't interact with it). The audio will still play through the speakers, and dragging the window back onto the main display brings back the flash functionality. This is a fairly new problem, it never used to happen before.

I would like to run two displays, an older 20" Cinema Display with DVI and a 27" Apple Display with mini-Display port to the new 15" Macbook Pro Retina. I realize that the mini-Display can go to one of the Thunderbolt ports so what what do I need for the DVI display?

with the new Mac Book Pro Retina (latest software updates) I can't play within iTunes any videos / previews. "Missing HCDP support of the display" stated, but no external monitor attached. ReInstalled everything, still the same issue. I can hear the sound, but can't see any picture and the computer freezes for a couple of minutes.

Finally took the plunge tonight and installed Windows 7 on a partition on my new Retina MBP. Everything's beautiful, runs fine... after playing around in native 2880x1800 for a while, I decided to see how this gorgeous screen would look at exactly 1/2 its native resolution. Open display properties... screen resolution... There is no option in either the windows native resolution pane or the nVidia Control Center to switch resolution to exactly 1440x900. Closest is 1600x900, which of course is the wrong aspect ratio.Â
I kept running games in OS X at 1440x900 and it would render all interpolated and blurry, and I thought that was simply Apple's funky scaling for the Retina display... but something's seriously wrong if I can't run a 2880x1800 screen at 1440x900. Of course, I can always define a custom resolution, but I'm scared to do that... I have no idea why 1440x900 isn't an option and I don't want to experiment on my brand new $2,200 toy.Â

I'm trying to get my macbook hooked up to two external displays.I remember seeing a post about it previously, with a solution, however, I stupidly did not bookmark it. Does anyone have a solution? As you know, the Macbook only has 1 mini-dvi port.

I'd like to add a larger (21" - 24") external monitor to my late model 15" MBPro, but don't want to spend $999 on the Apple Thunderbolt display. What should I look for in an after market external monitor? How would I connect it to my MBPro ports?Â

Currently I have a MBP 15" and use it on a daily basis with both the built-in display and an external 20" (1680x1050) display. I'm getting a new MBP retina and don't know how OS X is going to manage two displays with such a big difference in dots per inch. Will the "retina-ready" apps look just fine on the retina and enormous on the external?

Is it possible to get the following:
1. miniDP -> DVI
2. DVI -> VGA
3. DVI -> HDMI
and connect different displays. Or will there be troubles because of the double converters (first to DVI and then to VGA or HDMI).

I just plugged in my Cinema Display to my MBP for the first time, and for a while couldn't figure out why the heck the computer wasn't recognizing it (though maybe I'd gotten a bad MDP/DVI adaptor).
Then I'd noticed I'd set it via gfxCardStatus to use Intel graphics only. I released it to Dynamic -- and voila! Display recognized. Interestingly, it now also will not accept being set back to Intel only with the monitor connected.

I have a mbp with retina display and is not reading my rugged lacie external hd connected via the 2 usb ports. The lacie model that I have is the 500 gb one with the 2 firewire ports and one usb. When you connect it via usb you have to plug use 2 ports one for power the other for info. I'm trying that in the mbp retina and is not recognizing it. It doesn´t appear in the disk utility nor in the system info under the usb ports.

So after spending the last few hours trying to understand what is going on with the new HP EVNY 23inch monitor I just purchased to work as an extended desktop with my MBP and finding a number of other discussions relating to the topic where by the non mac external monitors have a very poor display due to the way OSX outputs the colour through HDMI. as seen here: MBP Retina: Poor image quality from hdmi outputÂ
Now I'm just wondering, before I return the monitor should I try a thunderbolt to HDMI connector and connect to the HP external display that way? I've tried searching on this topic with no luck so I justhad to ask the question because I actually really do like the screen. Â

I've connected my 30" Dell 3007WFP display to my Macbook Pro 15" Retina laptop with Apple's adapter for Thunderbolt to DVI-D Dual Link. The display is only receiving Single Link instead of Dual Link, limiting the resolution to 1280x800 instead of 2560x1600.Â
Has anyone else seen this problem? On the forums at macrumors.com, a few other people have reported this issue. One person there has reported that his adaptor (same model as I have) provided this display with Dual Link when connected to a Macbook Air but not when connected to the MBP Retina. If that's true, then it sounds like there's a defect in the MBP Retina. At the least, should I return the adapter until Apple makes some kind of a statement about whether this can be fixed?Â

My late 2011 MBP (lion 10.7.3) used to connect to external displays through a VGA cable. It has stopped doing so since recently and I am trying to find out why, and how to fix it. The only changes I've applied to the system are (1) connect to a Thunderbolt display and (2) installed gfxCardStatus. The MBP and Thunderbolt display work flawlessly together, with network, USB, and firewire connections operating. gfxCardStatus has noticably increased my battery life (so I recommend it) and I'm aware that it needs to be in dynamic or dedicated GPU mode for external displays. The VGA external displays do not work when gfxCardStatus is running in either dynamic or dedicated mode, or when I disable gfxCardStatus completely so that it does not show on the process list.Â

I have 2 Macbook Pro's, a 2009 and this brand new one I got today. My external hard drive is a 1 TB clickfree. It has worked for months on my old Mac but when I plug it into my new mac it doesn't even show up in finder or disk utility. I tried the USB ports with another device and they work fine. So it isn't a hard ware issue. The cables are USB 3.0. The external hard drive model number is HD2037N3.I have tried taking everything off (huge pain) and reformatting the drive and still it doesn't recognize it! how I can get my Mac to recognize it?

How do software that aren't retina compatible yet look on the MBP Retina Display? From my own experience as a developer when using regular sized images and resolutions on the iPhone 4, they come out as blurry. I was thinking perhaps the same thing will occur if the software isn't retina compatible? I e 2x in GUI size and scaled down?

I have an 28 inch Dell LCD screen that has a native resolution of 1920x1200. Does the MBA support that resolution through the Mini DisplayPort? The specs on the Apple website list the following:
"Supported resolutions: 1280 by 800 (native), 1152 by 720, 1024 by 640, and 800 by 500 pixels at 16:10 aspect ratio; 1024 by 768, 800 by 600, and 640 by 480 pixels at 4:3 aspect ratio; 720 by 480 pixels at 3:2 aspect ratio". But I read that the MBA can also do higher res.

I currently have a 15inch MacBook Pro with final cut studio, I use an external HD monitor for my main editing and the MBPs display for secondary. I am running out of screen real-estate for my secondary and want to get a 3rd monitor. The only problem is that there is not way to upgrade the graphic cards in the MBP. My question is: How can i have a total of 3 displays all displaying different images(ie. not mirrored).
