I'm using Final Cut Pro 10.1.3 and all my footage is on my external drive. Can I use this footage from the HD WITHOUT IMPORTING to my iMac HD? If so, how?

I got a Sony HDV HC9 today and I'm trying to upload some footage into Final Cut Pro. Now every so often it's coming up with "DV device cannot be initialized". I have no clue why this is. Is it something to do with the iLink being on or off? I have the import settings as 1080i50i so that shouldn't be a problem. I think i'm just doing something silly without knowing but it's driving me mad.

I have downloaded the PDZK-LT2 - Camera Import Plug-In Version 1.0 for Final Cut Pro X from Sony and opened the zip filed, moved what I got (file, dmg, zip and pdf) to the Application Support File in the Library. If this isn´t what I´m supposed to do - what and where?Â
Should FCPX recognise it when I want to import the footage and choose the plug in instead of the normal importer, or do I need to run it through the new plug in first, then import the new files to FC?? I can´t find any beginners info on this and it´s a bit lonely here trying trial and error with a tired head. I assumed it would just show up when I try to import it.Â

I need to edit together some video footage. I was going to digitize the footage on a PC (using adobe premiere) then edit it with Final Cut Express. I haven't purchased Final Cut Express yet, I'll only purchase it if I know it will work with footage digitized from a PC, does anyone here know if it's possible to use or import windows footage in to FCE? It will be saved as DV Avi files (I guess).

My immediate issue is that I have been editing fine this morning and then all of a sudden I could hear the audio for my clips but I can't see the footage in the viewer or the canvas. I can double clip on each clip individually and see what the footage is however. I've shut my computer down a few times and its not fixing itself. Also a lot lately when I sit down to do some editing the footage flickers on one clip and wont proceed to the next clips footage but I can still hear the sound.
View 2 Replies View Relatedediting with FCPX. I imported the footage through Image Capture like I did when using iMovie. I then imported the footage from my desktop into FCP. When it's just showing the thumbnails, it looks bright, like it did on camera. But when I scrub through it, or play the video, it appears very dark. Almost like it's with a filter. I tried to mess around with the buttons near the view screen, but they didn't do anything. Is this a settings problem or a FCP problem, and how do I fix it?

My playback screen in the window and full screen plays back footage that does not fit the screen, i also exported a sample and the same thing happened where the video does not fit the screen.

I purchased Snapz Pro X to record screen capture footage for a project I am doing. After recording the .mov files I imported them into FCP and edited together a sequence along with music and titling. Unfortunately in the output video the footage looks compressed and fuzzy. I have the project resolution set to an HD setting, but I'm still getting a fuzzy looking screen shot. What is the proper way to import screen captures into FCP and how do I export them without loosing resolution.

View 4 Replies View RelatedI upgraded operating system to Mavericks, since then all footage I export from FCP as a QT movie has artifacts. I'm using FC 6.0.6. I have the settings optimized for download in the settings options ad data rate at 3000. I have been exporting like this for years with footage looking same as in FCP timeline. Mavericks doesn't work with older programs..I only downloaded the thing so I could run Da Vinci Light, it screwed up my mail system too.

Now i m upgrading my macbook pro and would like to save final cut studio to my wd external hard drive so i can install it in my new macbook pro but it will not allow me it tells me there is an unexpected error code 0.

I recently purchased an external hard drive to store my Final Cut Pro projects, and what I would like to happen is that I see projects stored on my computer when the drive is not plugged in I would like to see the projects stored on my computer. If this is not possible I would at least like to be able to see the project stored on my drive and edit them Final Cut Pro. I only see the projects on my computer in Final Cut Pro even when the hard drive is plugged in and it has projects on it. I basically want to store my Final Cut Pro projects and be able to edit them on my external drive. (final cut pro 10.1.3 latest build of Yosemite)

I used SuperDuper to back up a project to an external Thunderbolt drive. The files are all there on the external drive but the references are still directed to the original drive (an external USB 3.0 drive).Â
I tried changing the locations of all files and then consolidating, but it still references the original drive. If I eject that original drive and just start FCPx from the copy on the Thunderbolt drive I just get a lot of "missing file" red flags.Â
How can I fix this? I would like to avoid doing a "duplicate project" every time as the project is over a terrabyte and it takes a long time to copy. SuperDuper only copies the files that have changed.

I have Canon HD Camcorder that I use to record family events, sappy stuff, etc. I haven't purchased Final Cut (mostly because I don't know how to use it), so I use iMovie to edit the video footage. I'm sick of having to "down-convert" the footage to get it onto a DVD so others can view it, so I'm looking to buy an external Blu-Ray burner (external because I have a newish Macbook). It looks like I have three choices at this point: LG (model BE06LU11), LaCie (d2), or Buffalo Technology. Has anyone tried (and been successful) at accomplishing what I'm trying to do, and if so, with which burner?
View 24 Replies View RelatedI'm having the most difficult time transferring projects and events from a 13" MacBook Pro (Late 2011) to an iMac (late 2013) I have moved the projects and referenced events to an external "WD my Passport for Mac" Hard drive. It holds 1TB.Â
In Final Cut Pro X 10.1.1 on the new iMac, the device is not recognized. I tried updating Mavericks and Final Cut. I've tried repairing the permissions, repairing both disk(s) deleting render files, restarting the disk, disconnecting the hard drive, restarting the computer. etc to no avail.
FCPX (latest version) recognizes my external hard drive (my book 4TB) as a camera. Didn't dave this problem before, so when I'm importing to my project the the hard drive is listed as a camera and the program starts to scan through all files! this means that the ram memory is filled i no time! Is it something in my settings or is it the new version of fcpx that is playing tricks on me (not supported had drive?)

I have copied all of my data from a 1T external hard drive to a new 4T external hard drive, but FCPX doesn't recognize my media files unless I rename the new drive to that of the old one. The problem is I want to continue using the old one. Is there an easy way to relink my files and keep the original name of the new drive?

I am upgrading my mid 2012 MBP with an internal SSD. I have16 RAM. OS is Mavericks.Â
I edit videos using a mix of photos (imported layers via photoshop), short animations, short video clips. I do some very basic stop animation also. So each media file is not heavy (photos, pics, short videos), but I do a lot of layering and compositing in FCPX. I had a lot of delays and freezes with 5400 rpm HDD… so I decided to upgrade to SSD.Â
Some people have told me to edit it all on my internal SSD as the media files are not big..Â
Everywhere else on the web I read that all media / libraries should be on an external while I edit them. But most of these contributors are using huge video files, HD, which is not my case.Â
So – with small media files but lots of editing and effects / animation, should I spend the extra money on a good external 7200 rpm USB3 to edit from ? Or just use external drive for storage and not editing.Â
Not going for TB as I read there would not be a difference between USB3 and TB on a 7200 rpm external drive (difference is felt when using RAID, r SSD external)Â ...

I need to reformat my iMac G5, but my optical drive doesn't work. How can I restore my iMac to factory settings and then reinstall from the purchased discs, Aperature, Final Draft and Final Cut Studio 7? Can I use my Ibook unibody's drive to somehow do this? Desperate to edit footage from my trip to South Sudan for CNN and NBC, and my macbook's screen has a 3 inch black line down the middle (that's another matter entirely!)... hence using the iMac. I make an exact duplicate copy of my FCX library on a USB drive, including the external media folder with all my video clips -- using the same folder structure and everything, But when I move that to another computer (MacBook Pro), open the exact same FCX library, open the same project -- I get missing links on every clip on my timeline. The library doesn't connect to the external media folder.Â
Re-linking causes an error and doesn't work either. The FCX library just won't take my "external media" folder which it links to fine on my iMac. All my projects on my MacBook Pro, have red "missing file" icons instead of the clips.Â

Got another thunderbolt LaCie HD, and I'm wondering when to move over to the other HD. How full should I let the first HD get? How much free space should I keep on it?
