Files Missing On Macbook Pro
Jul 4, 2012
I have a late 2011 15" Macbook Pro with a 500 GB SSD, 12 GB Ram, i7 Dual Core Processor, 2.2 GhZ that runs on OS X 10.7.2 (Lion), and within the last couple of weeks, I noticed that a couple files and folders went missing completely. I even restored everything weeks back through Time Machine, but even then, the folders and files were not there. I do not backup a lot on this MBP as it's mostly my personal MBP and not a work one as my iMac is, but the folders that are missing, I would like to have back again. They were just folders with pictures in them and a few graphics that I worked on; they were saved in my Documents panel. I'm wondering what the cause for the problem would be, how I can retrieve the folders/files (or IF I can), and possibly how to prevent this from happening again.
The folders and files went missing without the MBP being booted, they disappeared while the MBP was on and logged in. I only have one user account on this MBP, and everything else seems to be fine, aside from the missing folders and files. I have scanned my MBP for viruses and everything else, but nothing comes up and I'm really careful with what is downloaded on all of my computers, anyway.

This only happens when she copies files between internal hard drives. After copying the files, she verifies that files exist in both locations. She then deletes the files in the old location. Then, newly copied files are missing from the new location.
I've never heard of this happening before, except for with improperly unmounted external drives. I have run disk utility and verified that there are no problems with either drive.

On several separate occasions, one of our users has had trouble with files "disappearing."
This only happens when she copies files between internal hard drives. After copying the files, she verifies that files exist in both locations. She then deletes the files in the old location. Then, newly copied files are missing from the new location.

Could anyone help explain why this is happening or how to prevent it?

I have an external drive formatted with HFS. When I am in XP under bootcamp and looking through the files on that drive some of the files and folders are missing. When I boot back into snow leopard, the missing files and folders are there. It doesn't look like they are hidden or anything. Is there some setting I am missing or is there a bug in the bootcamp HFS driver?

I was just about to burn a cd to back up some files. I put them all on the cd (didn't click burn yet) and then I deleted them off my computer, and the clear my trash can. I went to burn the cd and realized I had made a bad mistake. It still shows the alias' on the cd folder. Is there any way I can get the files out of the alias? Or am I too far screwed and have to get a recovery program?

Recently my iMac power source died & after figuring that it wasn't worth my while replacing it (upgrading the machine was a better option) I removed the hard drive with the intention of retrieving all my iTunes mp3 files (over 160 gb worth). Upon trying to locate them I found that the iTunes music folder was now completely empty, & the hard drive was only holding 98 gb worth of data. A search of the net has thrown up all sorts of information pertaining to some sort of spyware built into iTunes that 'manages' your music. However, it sounds as much like speculation as fact so I thought I'd pose the question over here before I start ripping my CDs again, which is something I really want to avoid doing.

Migrated from an older 2007 iMac to a new iMac w/ OSX Lion via ethernet connection between the two machines.
Migration appeared to proceed smoothly but on starting the new Mac I noticed that I did not have any of my emails (client is Mail), nor my contacts.
So what exactly does the migration assistant transfer?...
I am also looking for the User/Library section and cannot find it. On my old machine all the email attachments where stored there. Has the folder structure changed that much? (and can you point me to some article that illustrates the changes between the 2 OSs?)Â

I have iTunes 10.6.1 running on MacOS 10.7.3 Because I was running out of harddrive space on my iMac (500GB), I had to move something off to my TimeCapsule. So I dragged my iTunes folder into the Data folder in the Time Capsule. (Time Capsule would not let me create any folders in the root directory so I had to use Data folder even though I thought that Data folder was reserved for the Time Machine.) My problem is that all my music files have an ! (meaning that iTunes can't locate the original file). Â
Current settings: iTunes Media folder location: /Volumes/Data/iTunes/iTunes Mediaunchecked "keep iTunes Media folder organized" I also tried moving the music folder with its many sub-folders to different parts of the Time Capsule. So now I can click on each song and tell the iTunes where to locate it. It will ask me whether I want to locate all the rest, to which I always answer "yes". But then it would tell me after half a minute that it can't locate any of the files.Â

Recently I noticed that ALL of the audio from an entire folder of .mov files has disappeared. Video playback is fine. I tried to export from Quicktime to experiemtn but it suggests that the file is corrupt and can't be exported...but all of them? Files are being kept on external drive. Could Lion be causing this somehow?

Is there a way to easily locate which media files are missing in my iTunes library instead of trying to play/view them one by one? I've found an app called iTunes library check, but it doesn't appear to work with my setup (I'm using multiple libraries with Libra, and the mentioned app only looks for media files in the iTunes folder).

I clicked on my HD and I have 124.5 Used and 61.51 Free, which adds up to 186.01. I then clicked on Macintosh HD and selected all the files and hit "Get Info." It all adds up to 117.5 GB. I'm missing about 7 GB and I don't know where it is. Are there some hidden files or something?

8 nights ago my drive failed. Tech replaced it & restored data from Time Machine. He said TM gave him no options (time/date of backup to restore). I noticed immediately that several files were missing off my desktop, no idea if other files have gone missing, too. Suspect the final backup was after the drive began to fail, therefore data was corrupted.Â
I don't know how to locate & replace the missing files, nor how to do a restore.Â

I did a reboot and suddenly realized that half of my icons on the Desktop are missing. I had a look into the folder and they were missing there, too. I looked into Trash, nothing. Being completely puzzled I rebooted again, with the result that now the Desktop is completely empty! It shows only the HD icons. None of my files are in the Trash. Nothing in the Desktop folder in Finder. ls -al doesn't show anything, only an empty file '.localized'. No other folder in my home directory seems affected. And no, I did not play with 'rm *'. I didn't install any fancy software recently (except Byki Express, not sure if that's important). I'm on a new unibody MBP 15", Leopard. Any ideas what I could do? And how to recover the files? I thought I should add that I also also searched the HD, just in case I accidentally moved the files.

We have a 2009 intel iMac here, running Leopard (10.5.8). We receive files from customers via browser-based FTP or email on this mac, and the boss puts these files in appropriately-named folders, and copies those folders into the appropriate place on our file server – a G5 (1.8Gz single processor 2.5Gb RAM) also running Leopard 10.5.8. All macs here are connected via ethernet using TCP/IP (of course)Â
However, every now and then, there are files missing from these folders. For example one folder (that had 100 images or so) had 4 files missing after copying to the file server, even though the folder was dragged across wholesale, not the contents. All filename conventions are standardised before being sent to us, and do not use any illegal characters that may cause a problem between differing OSs or processor platforms.Â
This issue may not be limited to these two macs, but there may not enough network traffic between other macs to show this issue on other machines – it only seems to occur when copying across large batches of files, and does not happen all the time. There is no one thing that sticks out that links the missing files – i.e. filenames/filetype, etc. It seems completely random.Â
I thought that TCP/IP was supposed to check data packets to ensure that all data was sent properly, but no errors are received on either side.Â
Is there some sort of maintenance (other than repairing permissions, which is done on a weekly basis on the fileserver) that I can run

This morning I went to find a band I haven't listened to in a while and it was not in the iTunes library. Did a quick search for the folder on the hard-drive and its not there either. The only thing I can think is maybe the upgrade to Lion did something I hadn't expected. But not sure. Has anyone else had this problem? I THINK I might have it stored on an external...but what a pain to find all the possibly missing music.

I'm on a G4 running 10.4.11. Recent strange behavior include mouseovers invoking clicks; cycling windows (programs and finder.) These annoyances seemed to have fixed themselves after restart. Now, many (not all) of my preferences have been changed requiring manual reset: auto login on start-up; internet connection. But the most problematic is that my CS3 programs won't launch due to one reason or another (missing licensing permissions or files; different messages with each program.)
I launched Disk Utility (using both Safe Boot and the Install CD) but Repair Permissions failed with a No Valid Package message

So I ran Disk Utility and ran the disk repair on my Western Digital external hard drive. After I did this all my files have disappeared, but it still shows that all the space that was taken up before is still being occupied. Is there any way I can recover my files? I am getting really distressed about it because I have almost 500 gbs of data that I don't know if I can get back or not.

I've had this very, very strange issue occurring over the past few days now where recently created files go missing or updated files revert back to earlier versions. It happens when I disconnect from my Time Machine external LaCie drive after backup. Even apps went missing and I had to reinstall them. It's like my machine is automatically reverted to two days earlier when I disconnect the external drive. When it started:
The first time I experienced the problem was *after* I added my Macintosh HD (internal) drive as an exclusion to the Spotlight list of excluded drives/folders. I did this because my Mail app would not allow me to select "Entire Message" when searching mail folders. A popular thread told me that if I added and then removed my (internal) hard drive to/from Spotlight, that it would re-index it, thereby finding the mail files again allowing me to search the message bodies. That's when the files and apps disappeared and/or reverted to previous versions. Again, the files reappear after I plug into the external Time Machine (LaCie) drive. But when I disconnect - they're gone! Other preferences have disappeared too - I've been prompted to re-enter serial #s I entered days prior for new software I added.
Machine: New MacBook Pro
OS X: Version 10.5.6
External Drive: LaCie 1TB
