Hardware :: Missing Files On External Hard Drive But Space Used
Sep 17, 2010
So I ran Disk Utility and ran the disk repair on my Western Digital external hard drive. After I did this all my files have disappeared, but it still shows that all the space that was taken up before is still being occupied. Is there any way I can recover my files? I am getting really distressed about it because I have almost 500 gbs of data that I don't know if I can get back or not.

All files on my external hard drive are missing. I was connecting my laptop to my external hard drive. It was taking an unusually long time. Once it did finally connect, two external hard drive icons appeared. then everything froze. I restarted my computer, but it wouldn't restart. After three days it finally restarted but nothing is on my hard drive. Mac os version 10.4.11

I recently bought a 160GB external hard drive, and decided to transfer my iTunes music to it. I followed the instructions in the Help section of the iTunes program. The first time, I mistakenly created an empty "iTunes" folder and put an "iTunes music" folder inside, where i proceeded to copy the files. I had already set the defult location of the library to my F: drive, my external hard drive. However, the original location of the files stayed in iTunes. Again, following the advice of the iTunes program, I deleted the original folders, and I dragged the new iTunes music folder into the window - at which point i had TWO copies of each file - the first one with an exclamation beside it (original file missing) and the second being my new copies.

My 500gb iMac (purchased April 2010) is about at capacity. 350gb of space is taken up by home movies (.mov) in iMovie. I bought an external hard drive and have moved about 200gb over to that drive.Â
After transfer, I deleted the original Events off iMovie and emptied the trash. I checked in both iMovie and in Finder and no longer see those files present on the Mac. Â
I thought this was going smooth and everything worked perfectly, but….when i went to check how much storage space i created on the Mac, the amount of available space barely budged (i moved 200gb of data to the new drive and i created about 30gb of space on the Mac).Â
Are these "deleted" files hidden somewhere and I need to go delete from somewhere else? How do I make sure I get back the storage that i need?Â

I have a mid 2011 21.5" 2.7 GHZ I5 IMac with a 1 TB HDD. It is reporting that the startup disk is full (<8gb left). I have surveyed the hard drive and found the "users" folder is using 972GB.The sole "user" folder (me) is using 972 GB An exploration and sum of "folder size" of each of the underlying folders (there are 8: Audio books, Desktop, Documents, Download, Movies, Music, Picture and Public) collectively sums to 316,6GB. The system tool in "about the iMac" (storage tab) shows "other" allocated a 893,97GB. Where is the missing 640GB plus of space? Please can anyone advise me how to identify where space has been allocated and how to rectify the problem? Â
I have done the following: All updates are installedVerified the partition - no faultsTimemachine - never been activatedre-indexed spotlight as suggested in a support article.deleted a dormant user (6GB) and deleted their dataI have emptied the trash. What else can i do?

My HD is at 410GB used out of 500. I only have about 230GB in Music and 65GB in Movies. Can I really have 100GB's of applications? The only big app I have is LibreOffice. How to diagnose the missing space?

I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate through VirtualBox, but I wasn't crazy about the experience and I have a Windows 7 laptop. I used the uninstall tool from the downloaded DMG file, but my 20GB of hard drive are missing still. Is the space still tied up somewhere or is something just like a restart needed? (I've been using my Mac all day so I haven't had the change to try a reboot)

I was using Boot Camp Assistant to partition my MacBook to install XP. While partitioning my MacBook completely froze and wouldn't unfreeze, I waited about 30 minutes to see if it fix itself, so I held down the power to force a restart, upon rebooting I opened Boot Camp Assistant to try again and I noticed I lost 50 gigabytes of space. Is there a way to fix this and regain my lost hard drive space?

Disk Utility Crashed whilst creating a Partition, and I now have ~100GB missing, which was the amount I had allocated to the new partition.
The new partition didn't get created, and I now have 100GB missing from the Hard drive. I have a 1TB hard drive, and when I go to Disk Utility, it says: Â Capacity : 999.35 GB (999,345,127,424 Bytes)Available : 586.1 GB (586,103,844,864 Bytes)Used : 310.52 GB (310,524,317,696 Bytes)Â
Which adds up to about ~900GB.
I tried Repairing Disk in Disk Utility, booting into Recovery Mode and Repairing Disk there, but neither made a difference.Â

Can anyone explain to me why, on my iMac's 500GB hard drive, the displayed size of the only 4 items on it is 207GB, that the info box on the HD itself says 393GB used? Unless I failed grade 1 math, 500GB - 207GB = 293GB, right? So where's the missing ~100GB? That's a lot of space I know I haven't filled up.Â

I've done some searching on the forums, but I cannot find exactly what I need. I currently have a Maxtor external hard drive partitioned into two sections; one for time machine, the other for music, movies, etc. Normally, the two separate partitions would show up on my desktop (labeled "Music" and "Time Machine") but as of lately the Time Machine partition fails to show. I cannot find the volume anywhere, but the Music partition still reads perfectly fine. how I can relocated the Time Machine partition?

I recently bought my first hard drive, a Hitachi 640GB, I just plugged it in and it's telling me there's 595 GB of 595 GB available.
Like I said, this is my first hard drive, can someone explain the reason why I'm missing 45 GB? Is it an operating system? Is there anyway to get rid of it?

This morning I went to find a band I haven't listened to in a while and it was not in the iTunes library. Did a quick search for the folder on the hard-drive and its not there either. The only thing I can think is maybe the upgrade to Lion did something I hadn't expected. But not sure. Has anyone else had this problem? I THINK I might have it stored on an external...but what a pain to find all the possibly missing music.

I am currently using a 2TB external hard drive to access all my photos and music when working with Lightroom 4 and iTunes. My 2TB storage space is almost getting full and has started me wondering what I'd need to do to continue working this way. I'm assuming even if I get another 2 or 3TB external hard drive, I'd still have to select only 1 external hard drive for Lightroom to access... Same goes for iTunes. What if I have music in both external hard drives?

I've had this very, very strange issue occurring over the past few days now where recently created files go missing or updated files revert back to earlier versions. It happens when I disconnect from my Time Machine external LaCie drive after backup. Even apps went missing and I had to reinstall them. It's like my machine is automatically reverted to two days earlier when I disconnect the external drive. When it started:
The first time I experienced the problem was *after* I added my Macintosh HD (internal) drive as an exclusion to the Spotlight list of excluded drives/folders. I did this because my Mail app would not allow me to select "Entire Message" when searching mail folders. A popular thread told me that if I added and then removed my (internal) hard drive to/from Spotlight, that it would re-index it, thereby finding the mail files again allowing me to search the message bodies. That's when the files and apps disappeared and/or reverted to previous versions. Again, the files reappear after I plug into the external Time Machine (LaCie) drive. But when I disconnect - they're gone! Other preferences have disappeared too - I've been prompted to re-enter serial #s I entered days prior for new software I added.
Machine: New MacBook Pro
OS X: Version 10.5.6
External Drive: LaCie 1TB

I have a MacBook Pro with a 500GB HD with only 76 GB of space left. I moved 200GB of movie files to an external drive then deleted the movie files from my Mac so I could free up the space on the HD. For some reason the HD still shows only 76GB of space available even though the entire movie folder was deleted. Is there something I need to do to get finder to update the GB available?

I don't know what's taking up so much room on my startup disk, I get an error message saying i'm full up and now a couple of programs are having trouble opening. I've spent two days dragging files into the trash and dumping them, wouldn't you think that would have cleared some space?

I have a 1TB external LaCie hard drive. Presently, it is loaded with about 300GBs of space so I should have around 650GBs left. However, it is only showing about 240GBs left. I think the problem is that I used to use this hard drive for Time Machine backups, I deleted them via the recycle bin. I checked the recycle bin, nothing there. I verified the disk, everything ok, I repaired it as well. I even erased the empty space.

I need to free up room on my hard drive. I would like to delete all my .ipa apps. Can I do that? Â I have itunes match, and I also sync to icloud. I know when I want to reinstall an app I just do that through the cloud. I have deleted apps to test that this is ok but the apps end up getting reinstalled. Here is what I want to do:
1. delete all my .ipa files on my computer to save a lot of hard drive space (I have a lot of apps....)
2. stop syncing to my computer, and only sync to icloud
3. rely on itunes match for backing up music
4. have calendar and contacts sync through icloud
5. if I need to reinstall apps do that through the tab on the app store for 'purchases.'Â

I just recieved an external hard drive for Christmas, and so far have only put my videos and some other folders on the drive. I would like to put my itunes library on there, but have NO idea how to go about doing this.
I have an ipod (8g) and want to be able to still sync and not lose any of my songs during transfer. I actually have more APPS than I do music, but I just want to move all those files to the external drive to clear up space on my mac (Powerbook G4, 10.4.11).

I can't boot my MacBook Pro. My hard drive is completely full. I was running a software update and didn't realize how big the file was. The computer shut off part of the way through the update and hasn't booted up since. How can I access the files on this drive to make some space?Â
I am running mavericks, but I don't know which version. I purchased a cable to access the internal drive through a USB on another computer. The drive shows up in disk utility, but will not let me browse the drive.

I just got my new Seagate 640gb external hard drive and am in the process of formatting it on my MBP. However, I am not sure which format to do? My main use for the hard drive is for transferring media files back and forth between my MBP and PC using just one partition on the drive. I already know I'm not supposed to pick 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' because I believe that is to use it as a boot drive. So should I pick 'Mac OS Extended' or maybe 'Free Space'?

I have a 750GB internal HD but film a lot of movies. To free up space, I have moved my iMovie clips off to a secondary hard drive, but I have not seen my free disk space free up on my Macbook pro. Why is this? I moved, not copied the files. They only show now on the external hard drive. I am looking at the free space in Finder > Get Info. I have easily moved a few hundred GB off to the new drive, but my internal HD still shows as over 500Gb used.Â

Over the past few days, I've been pruning my hard drive of excess files and moving many of them to external hard drives. My machine is a year-old Macbook Pro. Even after removing over 100GB of files from my 750GB internal hard drive, the info pane for my hard disc still tells me I have only about 60GB of free space.I have been using Disc Inventory X to find files and get rid of them. My latest scan of my HD with this program yields 450GB of actual files stored on my computer, yet the info pane for my HD (powered by Finder) is still telling me I have about 76 GB free. Does anyone have any ideas for how this discrepancy could exist? If the actual files on my computer only come to 450GB, how can I free up the remaining 250GB of space that seem to be missing?

I'm running out of hard disk space on my MacBook pro running OS X Lion. I have a 500 GB hard drive and at the moment the finder says I only have 16 GB available. Checking the total of all my files with the finder as well as Apps such as WhatSize and Disk Inventory X only adds up to aproximately 420 GB of files. Therefore I should have about 80 GB free so I am missing 64 GB of hard disk space.
The problem is not the local backup storage as I have had this problem before and have turned off local backups. I have also run disk utility and shut down and re-started. The available disk space is not decreasing with time either like other people have experienced, its fixed at the current availabilty of 16 GB free, and adjust normally as I add and remove files. So there really is a hidden file or something that is using around 64 GB of space.
I noted that a previous post with a similar problem said that DiskTools pro had fixed the problem. However as this application is reltively expensive and there is no explanation of how it soved the problem I don't want to pay for it without some guarantee of results.
