Desktops :: How To Remove The OS X 9 Whilst Leaving The OS X Intact?
Nov 10, 2010
I have an elderly G4 that has both OS 9 and OS X.
I would now like to pass this on to a young person, but I would like to leave them only with the OS X system. The two installed systems may well cause confusuion. How do I remove the OS 9 whilst leaving the OS X intact?

so...I have a macbook pro and recently I put several applications on the desktop: itunes and safari now, i want to remove these applications from my desktop WITHOUT deleting them and reinstalling them
another problem is i downloaded skype for my mac, and then i put it on the desktop
i didn't like it like that, so i tried to get it off the desktop
i ended up deleting it and reinstalling it, which is my first problem
i reinstalled it and now there's this symbol on my desktop
it's like a symbol you get when you insert a usb drive into the computer, except its blue and has a skype logo on it

I have a 2.0 GHz Intel Core Duo 20 inch iMac (early 2006). I have purchased additional memory that I want to install but when I try to remove the cross point screws holding the cover plate over the memory compartment they will not budge. I am afraid to squirt them with WD40 since I fear overspray would probably go into the memory compartment. I am also afraid to "bump" the screws by tapping the end of the screwdriver with a hamer since the shock might damage the drives. Have anyone of you had this difficulty? If so how did you solve it.

Recently I got a broken G4 cube. I am trying to figure out what the problem is. The previous owner cut the original IDE-cable. So I replaced it with just a standard IDE-cable. Maybe that's the problem, I am not sure. Everything is connected like it should be, power is on, but it doesn't boot. This is what happens. The moment I connect the power supply, it starts booting, I hear the superdrive spin up for half a second, after that it will go dead again. This repeats itself about a 1000 times. The cinema display is connect through ADC, but doesn't do one thing!

I'm getting ready to sell my old Powerbook G4 so booted up from the installation CD, and ran Disk Utility to do a 8 Way Random Write pass on the Mac hard drive before I did a clean install (the disc is Mac OS X 10.3.7).
I selected the top option in the drive panel of Disk Utility (the one saying 92.2GB Hitatchi blablabla) rather than the indented disk beneath it.
All went fine doing the overwrite, however it seems to have become stuck on "Creating Partition Map" - it's been like that for half a day now. Any thoughts? Should I have chosen the indented drive underneath the main description?

I have 2 x 2Tb external hard drives (Hitachi Touro Desk Pro), both of which have been formatted. I am using one of them for my entire iTunes Library, whilst the other one is being used as a Time Machine back-up for the first external plus the MacBook HD.
All is fine with both drives until I go to use Time Machine. The external with the iTunes Library will just lose connection and I get an error message saying that "the disk has not been ejected properly and may result in damge...etc..." - just like the USB cable has been yanked out (which it hasn't). I then have to unplug it from the Mac and unplug it from the power supply, then re-conect it all for it to be able to mount again.
Not sure why this is happening and am getting worried that this behaviour is going to damage the drive which has all my iTunes music, TV shows & movies on it, before I get a chance to back it up.
Could this be an external drive issue, a cable issue or a Time Machine issue??

Is there a way around this. I wish to download a lot of my music from iCloud , like 40gb worth but I don't want to keep the MacBook "awake" does it download when it's sleeping? The same with system and app updates, it seems to stop when it goes to sleep, is there a way around this?Because the download is so big I will have to leave it open and turn the energy setting off so it doesn't go to the auto sleep...

When I move my MacBook I can feel my battery moving inside the macbook as well. My battery cover seems to not sit flush with the rest of the body. It sits enough so it doesn't bother me, but when I turn over the macbook and look at it, it gets more annoying. Do I have ocd?

I've been using it briefly and it seems to be relatively reliable however tonight I uploaded a photo from my iphoto to another facebook account for someone and now their account is in my iphoto alongside mine. Any idea how to delete their facebook account integration but keep mine intact. I love using iPhoto with my facebook but I don't really want someone elses up there. This is probably a simple fix, I however can't seem to find the solution.

I have a customer who owns a Mac and when she attempted to download an unzipped embroidery file (jef extension) she was greeted with the message this was not possible, that it had to have a .dmf extension and she was given the option to use both (nameoffile.jef.dmf)This did not work at all.
How do you download an embroidery file while keeping the extension intact? She transfers her file to a jump drive and then to her machine. We tried downloading directly to the jump drive - same message. She is going to try to use her Windows parallel and see if that will work.

Well my Mac is experiencing some problems which I won't get into and it's getting a bit laggy so I'm considering doing a fresh install of SL. But my question is if I were to restore it to my Time Machine backup, would it put all the applications back to their previous state on my mac and maintain software registration and stuff. Because it would be a pain to go and find all my lost serial numbers again.

Disk Utility Crashed whilst creating a Partition, and I now have ~100GB missing, which was the amount I had allocated to the new partition.
The new partition didn't get created, and I now have 100GB missing from the Hard drive. I have a 1TB hard drive, and when I go to Disk Utility, it says: Capacity : 999.35 GB (999,345,127,424 Bytes)Available : 586.1 GB (586,103,844,864 Bytes)Used : 310.52 GB (310,524,317,696 Bytes)
Which adds up to about ~900GB.
I tried Repairing Disk in Disk Utility, booting into Recovery Mode and Repairing Disk there, but neither made a difference.

I wasn't paying attention when installing the windows XP and I choose the "Leave the current file system intact" option and I am unable to boot up my IMac. Its a black screen saying failing to boot from cd, press any key to reboot and it doesn't. I have ejected the cd and I been trying to hold down the option button to choose which to load up from but it doesn't work. I have an external hard drive that I been using for time machine, is there any way I can boot up from that disc and then have the hard drive in the IMac reset to the mac OS X partition? Running Mac OS X Leopard to its fullest updated on Intel core duo IMac with 2 gigs of ram

I rarely shut down my PCs, is it okay to leave the Macbook Pro on 24/7? It's a notebook and heat might be a concern especially the fact that notebooks were never meant to run 24/7. Then again, my MBP never gets very hot.
BTW, where is the intake/exhaust vents located on the MBP unibody?

which is better & less stressful on the computer? powering it up & leaving it on all day? I work on it for 1-3 hrs at a time, & then take a break & do other stuff & come back, it is more convenient to have it on all ready. Or is it better to be powered down?

What's the consensus on the MBP and charging?
Should I let it run down before plugging it in or plug it in whenever I can? Does it make any sort of difference to the life of the new internal battery?

I was wondering if it was safe to leave my macbook on while i sleep to download big things that can take up to a few hours to download?
Should I leave it hooked to a power supply or running off it's own battery?
While i'm at it: Is it safe to leave my macbook on the power supply anytime im at home, or does that kill the battery faster?
