Desktops :: Dying G4 Monitor - Vibrating Red Lines

Aug 8, 2010

iMac Flat-Panel G4 1GHz, 1.25GB Memory, Built 2003, OS 10.4.11: the 17" flat-panel display has developed vibrating vertical red lines. I have saved an iMac G5 that died; can I use it just as a monitor for my G4?

Desktops :: Using Mini DisplayPort To VGA With A Samsung Monitor

Mar 14, 2009

I have the standard 13" aluminum macbook, and I was looking into getting the 'Mini DisplayPort to VGA' adapter to connect my 22" Samsung monitor. On the Apple website, I have seen nothing but horrible reviews about the connection cable, saying that it exclusively does not work with Samsung brand monitors and TV's. On the other hand I only see good things about it connecting to other devices and monitors.

Can anyone shed any light on this? It's already ridiculous that i have to pay the 30$ price for this cable just to use an external monitor, the least I can do is know that it will for sure work.

IMac :: Horizontal Lines Across The Surface Of Monitor

Aug 7, 2010

I have an Apple iMac 20" 2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo. I work on photos in Adobe Photoshop CS4. Am running Snow Leopard 10.6.4. Am getting thin horizontal lines across the surface of the monitor. Reduced the resolution of the monitor from 1680 x 1050 to 1344 x 840. For a while, it was better but the lines are back again. Any idea what is causing this problem? Is it software, a setting on the computer or maybe a problem with the video card? Hope it is not a bad video card.

Mac Pro :: Freezes - Monitor Fills With Little Wavy Lines

Apr 5, 2012

My MacPro (early 2008, Lion, software up to date, Disk Utilities) freezes suddenly, colours become distorted and the screen fills with little wavy lines, a bit like horizontal curly brackets. The Magic Trackpad and Bluetooth Keyboard are unable to control anything. Working in Safe Mode is possible, but the problem sometimes appears even then.

MacBook :: Managing Dual Monitor With Multiple Desktops

May 29, 2012

After updating to Lion, I set my macbook up with a few different desktops so I could easily swipe between them instead of searching for the windows I needed.I just set up a second monitor to my mac and noticed that anytime I swipe to a different desktop, both monitors change. Is there a way to "freeze" one while the other moves? Or better yet, can I set up my second monitor to only have one desktop while my mac still has 2 or more?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Split One Monitor Into Two, Differently Configured Desktops

Feb 2, 2012

I have a 27" iMac. I would like to split the screen into two differently configured desktops or monitors. Apps like TwoUp or Divy don't exactly do this. I'll explain it with an example:

Suppose I'm working on a document and I need to open many folders to retrieve files. One common problem is that opened folders overlap each other and sometimes they overlap with the document I'm working on, or they go underneath the document. I would like to split the screen vertically in, say, two virtual, independent desktops/monitors, like this:

- one window/space on one side (say, on the left) of the screen would contain the document  from top to bottom, with no dock bar on the bottom

- the other window/space (right) would behave as a regular, full desktop, with the entire dock on the bottom

In this way, if I need to navigate to find a file to use in the document, I would move the cursor to the right. The Finder would work only in this window/space, thus windows or other applications would never overlap or clutter the left side of the screen. Drag-and-drop from right to left should be possible.

One way to imagine it is as if the 16x9 monitor were comprised by two vertical, 8x9 independent monitors side by side, each with its own configuration.

MacBook Pro :: Monitor Display Not Working Fine / Horizontal Scan Lines And Black Out Occasionally

Jul 9, 2009

So I had a recently purchased 17" BTO with the 7200RPM drive that worked great, but with one issue - the display would have horizontal scan lines and black out occasionally. So I called up Apple and eventually managed to get a cross-ship set up(they let me hold on to my current unit, charge my credit card and send me a second brand new 17" unit as a replacement, and then refund me for the second 17" after I send back the defective unit).

Anyway, the replacement unit looks great, but with one issue - there's a very small light dent on the bottom panel(maybe about the size of a dime). I was annoyed but don't think this is worth having to exchange, since I could probably just unscrew the panel and pop it back into place.

However, what really got to me was the fact that my replacement unit was slightly louder than my original - my original is so silent that I can't even tell it's on. However, with my replacement unit, I can hear the hard drive spinning, which is slightly annoying.

Anyway, I proceeded to restore from a time machine backup and test my replacement unit when I noticed that it would occasionally get the hard drive click + beep + freeze issue that many others who have the 7200 RPM drive seem to be facing. It's extremely annoying, and more importantly I miss the complete silence of my older unit.

My question is, while I'm still in possession of both units(which both have the exact same specs, same 7200 RPM drive, etc.), should I simply just open both up and take the silent(good) hard drive from my old unit and put it into my new one?

The click+beep freeze issue is really pissing me off, and my old unit didn't suffer from it - it's just this replacement one(doesn't make any sense).Anyway, would notice if I switched the hard drive? Would I get screwed somehow? Do they keep track of the hard drive serials or something?

I really don't want to go through the pain of sending this back, especially considering that a LOT of people are suffering from this issue, and I don't want to end up with another defective drive. I'm sick and tired of games and just want a computer that WORKS.

MacBook :: Buzzing, Vibrating - How To Fix It

Mar 23, 2010

Well, I have a late 2008 13" Macbook Aluminum, (I've had it since Christmas of 2008) and just yesterday, I noticed a weird buzzing-like sound coming from the inside of it. There's also a faint vibrating feel to it. I felt around, and the vibrating feels like it's coming from under the middle of the keyboard more severely. The buzzing occasionally sounds like it's getting faster, and then slower, faster, slower, etc.

If I switch the refresh rate back to 60 it goes away but then that looks so bad that I have to bump it back up to 70hz. Is there any settings that I can change to fix this vibrating? Like I said, this didn't happen until I moved the computer 20 feet into a neighboring room.

IMac :: Loud Vibrating Noise Audible When I7 Placed On Desk

When my new i7 is on my usual desk (where iMac 24" white stood silently before), it sounds like a dishwasher. Or a plane engine. The low, loud vibrating noise drives me so mad I snap. It penetrates my very brain and makes it vibrate. It's audible from another room. In desperation, I raised my Mac and the sound stopped. I put it on the floor, and the machine is silent. Back on desk - airplane engine sound again. What the heck? My desk has been perfect for all my other computers, what's so special about i7?

Mac Pro :: Is Video Card Dying?

Oct 12, 2008

Lately I've been seeing some odd things on my screen. The appear randomly and can only be removed if I change the resolution of my screen (I guess thats the closest thing to a degauss button we have these days) but it always comes back within an hour or so. There is nothing that seems to specifically trigger it either. It shows up as blue on a dark color and yellow on light colors (see the images below).I have an NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT in a 2.5 Ghz Quad PPC Powermac.

This has been going on since about the same time I updated to 10.5.5 but Im not so sure its a software glitch. A part of me is thinking that this is my video card's last gasps for air before it dies. BUT I can take a screenshot of it which makes me question the software aspect. I can only take a screenshot of it when I use the command for taking a shot of the entire screen (Command-Shift-3) and not the command for cropping your shot (Command-Shift-4).

Mac Pro :: 7300GT Video Card Dying On 1.1

Jul 19, 2010

My Mac Pro 1,1 (two dual-core 3Ghz) has begun to have a blue screen flick on intermittently for a second or two. Sometimes the blue screen may not happen for over an hour and then it may happen a few times in a few minutes. I did a Safe Boot and reset the pram but there was no change. I was going to run Apple Hardware Test but after some Google searching it seems that Hardware Test probably won't spot the problem if it is the 7300GT video card I have in the machine - which is what I suspect is the problem. Based on doing a search of this forum and a Google search, it seems like the cheapest replacement I can get for the 7300GT is the ATI Radeon HD2600XT. (I don't do anything that needs a higher "power" video card.) Does anyone know if either one or both of these cards will work in my Mac Pro: [URL:...] If not, what cheap video card might you recommend for my Mac Pro 1,1 and where might be a good place to obtain it?
