PowerPC :: Power Mac G5 Are Dying?

Jun 16, 2008

During last 6 months I saw at least 5 PowerMac G5 that shows the same malfunction symptom, hangups, no video, fans running at full speed. It seems to be the main board, and many of them are 2.0 dual version (different models) and today I have a 2.3 Dual processor with the same problem. Anyone has other experience like me?

PowerPC :: Powerbook Screen Dying Slowly?

Nov 6, 2006

I have been told this is a broken (or breaking, as its still usable) LCD, but before I reach deep, DEEP inside my pockets to get a new screen, I thought I'd drop by and see what you guys think. I get this whilst adjusting the angle of the screen. is it truely dying slowly?

Heres a link to a short video of problem.

I also noticed that it doesn't pick it up if I take a screenshot, does this mean anything?

PowerPC :: IBook G4 Hard Drive Dying - Needs More Space?

Jun 9, 2009

I'm on an iBook G4 running OS X 10.4.11. It comes with about 50GB of hard drive space and 512MB of RAM. I bought it around 2006 or so. Also, I have no idea what the heck I'm talking about, so I hope you'll be patient with me.

1) It's been running extremely slowly, especially when Firefox is running. Rainbow pinwheels when switching between programs, when switching between tabs in Firefox, when opening new windows in Firefox or typing search terms into Google, etc. It runs faster immediately after I restart, but then will slow down after a few days of running the machine. (It also runs a little faster when my external drive (which holds my 19GB iTunes library) is disconnected.)..................

PowerPC :: Sound - Speaker Isn't Present In Menu Bar - PowerBook Dying?

Dec 9, 2007

For the last two weeks, my 12" 1.5Ghz PowerBook running Leopard has being doing a strange thing. After either restarting my computer or logging back in to my account, the sound completely goes away (except for the start-up chime). The speaker isn't present in my menubar, and when I press the volume up and down keys I get the volume screen shown with a circle with a bar through it. The sound preference pane says "no output devices found," even when I plug in external speakers or headphones. My iPod also won't mount when this happens. A PRAM reset appears to temporarily solve the issue, but it has now happened a few times and I'm quite worried that there's something seriously wrong with my PowerBook, which is now getting up there in age. I'd like to hold off on my buying a MacBook Pro until the summer, but that won't happen if my logic board is failing or something like that.

PowerPC :: Powerbook G4 Won't Power Up - Battery Indicator Showed One Flickering Power Circle?

Mar 19, 2008

My girlfriend has a 12 inch Powerbook G4. She noticed that the battery life was starting to dwindle. Tonight, she tried using it. It wouldn't power up. The battery indicator showed one flickering power circle. The adaptor has the green circle on it, indicating the battery has a full charge. However, the computer won't charge up.I've read the 12 inchers don't have separate PMUs. Could that prevent the machine from starting? She was using it earlier this evening, as she e-mailed me pictures from our vacation.

PowerPC :: IBook G4 - When I Press Power Button, Power Fan Comes On, But No Picture Shows

Feb 10, 2008

I have a iBook G4 laptop and there seems to be something very wrong with it. It started a few days ago just randomly. I was reading something on the internet and the screen went black on me, but the power was still on (I clicked CAPS LOCK to see if there was power). I then proceeded to push the power button and the power went off. When I pressed the power button again to turn it on, it made that internal noise it always makes and then the fan came on, and wouldn't turn off. There was no picture on the screen at all. Completely dead. But there was power, because when I clicked on the CAPS LOCK, the light came on). I tried pressing on the power button for at least 15 seconds and even went as long as a minute, and the power didn't go off.

PowerPC :: Making Power Button Shut Power Mac Off?

Oct 7, 2006

I'm using a B&W Power Mac G3 with 512MB RAM and OS X Tiger for a SMB file server (with 5 users) and a USB printer server. Everything is working good, but I have a problem.

It doesn't have a monitor or keyboard/mouse attached normally (I can configure it via VNC). The problem is that I would like to be able to turn the machine off when it's not needed (like at night sometimes, days when I won't be home, etc.). I would like to just hit the power button and have it turn off, however it puts it to sleep instead.

Normally, sleep would be fine, except on the B&W, the fans still run, just the HDs shut off, so it's still noisy as heck.

Is there a way to make the power button shut it off? If not, any other easy methods of shutting it off you can think of? Via VNC won't cut it, as my dad needs to be able to turn it on (not a problem) or off as well.

PowerPC :: Mounting The Power-supply From The 2004 On The 2005 Is The Power-supply Compatible Or Not

Dec 29, 2010

I have a PowerMac G5 with the first motherboard that is out of order, and another PowerMac

G5 Late 2005

with 2x2.0GHZ

Mounting the powersupply from the 2004 on the 2005 is the powersuply compatible or not?

EDIT: I looked on Mactracker and compared the two:
Max Watts in the first is 604W and 450W on the late 2005.
I want to put a powersuply from a G5 2004 (604W ) on a G5 2005 that had a 450W powersuply is this possible ?

Mac Pro :: Is Video Card Dying?

Oct 12, 2008

Lately I've been seeing some odd things on my screen. The appear randomly and can only be removed if I change the resolution of my screen (I guess thats the closest thing to a degauss button we have these days) but it always comes back within an hour or so. There is nothing that seems to specifically trigger it either. It shows up as blue on a dark color and yellow on light colors (see the images below).I have an NVIDIA GeForce 7800GT in a 2.5 Ghz Quad PPC Powermac.

This has been going on since about the same time I updated to 10.5.5 but Im not so sure its a software glitch. A part of me is thinking that this is my video card's last gasps for air before it dies. BUT I can take a screenshot of it which makes me question the software aspect. I can only take a screenshot of it when I use the command for taking a shot of the entire screen (Command-Shift-3) and not the command for cropping your shot (Command-Shift-4).

Mac Pro :: 7300GT Video Card Dying On 1.1

Jul 19, 2010

My Mac Pro 1,1 (two dual-core 3Ghz) has begun to have a blue screen flick on intermittently for a second or two. Sometimes the blue screen may not happen for over an hour and then it may happen a few times in a few minutes. I did a Safe Boot and reset the pram but there was no change. I was going to run Apple Hardware Test but after some Google searching it seems that Hardware Test probably won't spot the problem if it is the 7300GT video card I have in the machine - which is what I suspect is the problem. Based on doing a search of this forum and a Google search, it seems like the cheapest replacement I can get for the 7300GT is the ATI Radeon HD2600XT. (I don't do anything that needs a higher "power" video card.) Does anyone know if either one or both of these cards will work in my Mac Pro: [URL:...] If not, what cheap video card might you recommend for my Mac Pro 1,1 and where might be a good place to obtain it?

MacBook Pro :: Why Is Battery Dying So Quickly - It Has Only 94 Cycles

May 23, 2012

My MacBook Pro is 1 year old, almost to the day and my battery seems to be loosing all it's juice quite quickly these days. The battery cycle count is only 94. This morning I turned my computer on and I've only done emails. It's now about 4 hours since it's been on and I have 20% battery left. Bluetooth is turned off. Not doing anything any different than I used to. Seems to me the battery used to last 4 days for what I do with the computer. Now I charge it 2 or 3 times a day. I notice the underside of the laptop seems to get quite hot.

MacBook Pro :: 15" Has Started Spontaneously 'dying'?

Jun 30, 2012

I have an early 2011 15" MacBook Pro, and about three weks ago the screen suddenly went completely black. I can't remember what I was doing at the time, but I don't think I was inputting in any way. The only way I could revive it was to press and hold down the power button until the boot-up tune started playing. I thought it was a one-off, but it has now happened twice more. The last time was this morning. I had opened the lid to wake it from it it's overnight sleep, looked at one text document and close textedit. Then I saw I'd received an email, (I always leave Mail running), so I clicked on the Mail icon and opened the message. I was just reading the message -and not inputting- when the screen just went black without any warning whatever. The Apple logo on the lid also went out.

I closed the lid and left it twenty minutes to see if it would wake up normally when I re-opened the lid, but no, I had to press and hold the power button to re-boot. There was an error message displayed when my computer came back to life, but it wasn't very informative. It had a complex report log, which I copied and saved, but it means nothing to me. I believe that data was then sent to Apple. I don't remember this happening before I upgraded from 10.6.x to 10.7.4 in mid-May, but it didn't happen straight after the upgrade so I can't be sure it's related.

MacBook Pro :: Battery Dying Even While Plugged In During Gaming

Jul 2, 2014

I play a game called League of Legends which is fairly computer intensive. While playing, my battery continues to discharge continuously even though I have it plugged into the wall. I can usually get 3-4 games in before I have to stop and let the battery recharge. I have already decreased the screen brightness to half, turned off the keyboard back-light, and made sure that bluetooth was off yet the issue persists. I have noticed that the light on the charger seems to change colors often. It will cycle from green to orange to off then back to green again etc.

I have an early 2012 15" Macbook Pro with the latest version of Mavericks OS.

MacBook :: Hard Drive Dying - Sleep Or Shutdown

Sep 6, 2009

So basically, my hard drive is dying (clicking/chirping noises, random freezes), but for now it seems to keep working and until it finally breaks, I want to put as little load on it as possible and was wondering whether its better to put the machine to sleep at night or turn it off completely? I realise it's fairly minor by itself, so in addition I'm trying to stream as much video as possible instead of downloading, I've got it constantly hooked up to an external making hourly TM backups, also got a carbon copy bootable clone made.

IMac :: Screen Not Coming On Startup - Logic Board Dying?

I was having a few problems earlier this week with the screen doing strange things - occasionally turning off, then coming back on. It was suggested that it might be a dying logic board but I tried a Apple Hardware Test this morning but it said no problems found. I have some files backed up but desperately need to get some recent documents off it [I know, I should have backed it up more often ]. Is there any way to get access to the files on the hard disc?

MacBook Pro :: PRAM Battery Dying On 38th Week 2009?

Apr 4, 2012

Now normally I wouldn't expect it in an under 4 year old machine, but the normal battery is working as expected.  However, when I'm not plugged into power, my WiFi doesn't always reconnect, and when it does, the internet doesn't seem to connect either 90% of the time.  When I'm plugged into power, no problem.  3 other machines on the same wireless network have no issues with it, though my cable company says they are detecting intermittent signal loss, which I can't reproduce on any other machine.  The other reason I believe it is the PRAM battery and not the main battery, is during one reboot, the date reset itself to year 2000.  Once I managed to reconnect the internet, I was able to set the date & time to the time server.

PowerPC :: Power Mac G4 Vs Mac Mini

Jun 16, 2008

My mother just had her G4 Mac die on her. She bought it four years ago! She got the last MDD Power Mac G4 with dual 1.42 GHz PowerPC 7455 processors, running on OS 9!

Photoshop, Illustrator, Quark, Flash, Office, GoLive, InDesign, Image ready, Dreamweaver and so on, is the programs she use the most.

She has been quite satisfied thus far with the performance of the G4, until now(DEAD...)

She now considers getting an Mac Mini, with 2,0 Core 2 Duo Processor, 2 GB Ram running on Lepoard with a 160 GB Harddrive.

My question is - Is the Mac Mini powerful enough for the programs that she uses mostly(mentioned above)
Will the Mac Mini be more powerful or equal to the G4?

The Mini has a integrated Intel 950 GPU - Would it be enough to run does programs decently?

I know that the buyers guide suggests not purchasing a mini, but we are short on money, and she needs the computer to do her job as a web designer/art director!

An alternative would be to purchase a refurbed G4 similiar to the one she had before!

I dont know what to advice to her. When money is an factor, and considering that she has been happy with the G4 for the past for years, I just dont know...
