Desktops :: Adding AirPort Card To Older IMac
Dec 23, 2009
My daughter has an older iMac (with Firewire, but probably about six years old, it runs 10.3.9) and is adding a new iMac to her home. The older one will be for her children's use, and she and her husband will use the new one. Now for the problem. The old iMac doesn't have an Airport card; one would have to be added in order for both iMacs to have internet access.
1. Where can they find an airport card for this iMac?
2. Where can I find instructions for adding this card to the iMac?

I got this Airport extreme wireless card (b/g/n)for the MacPro late 2009. There are 2 inputs on the card and 3 airport(antenna) wires to connect it from the Pro. Which ones do I use?

When I first ordered my late 2007 Mac Pro, I didn't need an AirPort card because my router was set up right on my desk. However, I just moved into a new house and my current internet set up doesn't allow me to have my router next to my pro. So now I want to add and AirPort card.
I'm thinking of purchasing from here: [URL]
What I want to know is:
1. Will this work on my late 2007, 2.66ghz quadcore Mac Pro?
2. How difficult is it to install?
3. Can I even install it myself or will it have to require taking it to the Apple Store?

How certain are we that (physical?) interference between the airport card/wifi and the graphics card can be cured with a download, and not actual hardware fix/repair? I mean, I know technology is advancing rapidly, but I'm not sure I can believe that a download can solve the issue that the 4850s are experiencing.

I'm trying to connect an older G4 computer tower (400mhz) to an LCD TV (Vizio 20"). The computer has a ATI rage 128 video card. I have a VGA-to-VGA cable that connects the computer to the RGB connection on the TV. However, I'm not getting a signal. Are any additional steps, hardware, cabling, etc. needed here? Not very familiar with tech details. I've searched web. I have access to an 'ATI rage 128Pro' card that seems to have a DVI connection in addition to the VGA port. Would this work better?

I'm in need of some guidance. It took me a little while to get my GTX280 into the 1st slot in my mac pro but I'm just wondering,
In order to boot into os x can I just leave the 280 in the 1st slot and put the old 7300 gt in the 2nd slot ?
Then I can turn the power off from the 280 and it will default to the 2nd slot rite? Or must I remove the bottom (280) card for the older card to work?

My old Mac, G4 tower running 10.4.11 died. I need to recover data from the hard drive. I put the drive in a disk drive enclosure via USB but my new Mac, Mac Pro Intel, 10.4.11 cannot read the drive. I get an error message, "this drive is not readable by this computer, eject, initialize". It sees the USB drive in disk utility but cannot see the data.

Got a new HD for my Mac backups to day and did a full back up. Previously, I used a different HD for backups and would like to know if I can add those older back ups on a different HD to the new HD that I'm currently using?

just converted and purchased a 21.5" iMac this weekend, he took advantage of that rebate offer on printers and picked up the black HP wi-fi printer. Anyhow he does not have an airport extreme or any type of wireless router since his iMac is right next to his modem, so he is using Ethernet.
So I tried setting up a wireless network using his internal airport card in his iMac and this worked out great i enabled internet sharing and printer sharing. For some reason when i try to connect his printer with his network it says that the network is not within reach even though the printer is right next to the iMac. Am I doing something wrong? is there something I'm missing? I know the wi-fi network is working properly because he is able to connect with his iphone and I was able to connect with my MBP.

I called Apple and they were very unhelpful about which airport card is required for the iMac G5 1.6 Ghz. I found a bunch on ebay (A1126) but I think those are for different models.

I have just installed an Airport Extreme Card in my G4 iMac. I can't get it to connect to my wireless network via a Linksys WRK54G router. When I enter in my network name, it doesn't recognize my wep password. I have two PCs running fine off this network.

Just installed one of the original airport cards in this machine, and though all indications are that it is working correctly, it doesn't see the USR wireless router sitting 10 feet from it. No networks show up in the dropdown list, and manually adding does nothing. Encryption is a simple MAC filter (this card has already been added), and SSID is broadcast. Did I get a bad card? System profiler seems to think it's fine.
It's an original airport card.
Computer's a G3 400 Mhz iMac.
A G3 300 Mhz iBook with original airport card is having no troubles.
Firmware of Airport card is 9.52
Firware of router is up to date.
OSX 10.3.9
All help greatly appreciated; this is my moms little computer, and we're trying to rearrange and loose some wires.

I've had this computer for many years and it has been trouble free. Recently, however, it's been losing the wifi signal. It'll keep it for a while, but then I'll see it fluctuate and eventually die. I can't seem to bring it back to life. I have an iPhone, apple tv and a laptop that all seem to have no trouble pickng up the wifi signal. Would this be a software or hardware issue? Could my airport card be dying? If so, is it fixable?

I was just wondering if I could connect a NAS to one of the older Airport Extreme base stations? And if so, how should I do it, over ethernet or USB. For reference it is this one: clicky The set-up is a room with 14-16 macbooks accessing the router to download a program, or set of pictures etc. Do you think this router set up with a NAS over ethernet/USB would be good for this application?

I installed the ATI Radeon x1900 card (512MB) in my 2006 Mac Pro. Can't change resolution- it's at 1200x800 on my 30 in cinema monitor and there is a warning that my video cable needs to be plugged in. There is no video cable, the card just plugs in.

I bought my Mac Pro as a refurb from Apple, but it didn't come with the wireless card built in. This didn't bother me because at my old apartment my computer was near the router so I just wired it up by ethernet. I just moved into a new place and my computer isn't within router distance and I don't want to run a bunch of cable. My boss gave me a card to plug into Apple wifi card spot and OSX found the card and showed some airport info, but it didn't find any networks and if I run the Airport Utility it says it can't find an airport card. So I assume it's not compatible. What are my options? Oh yeah, I found this on ebay. Sound reliable? [URL:....]

I'm worried about too much heat and wearing out fans in both the card and my Mac.
Below are the conditions, but first:
-Is it normal for this kind of card to run ALL the time? How do I know if it's acting correctly?
-Given the heat and fan speed info below, are my Mac and internal drives OK?
-Am I risking any breakdowns? Due to heat or fans running too much... or?
-Do all graphics cards cause the fans to run like this? Is there a cooler card out there?
Condition:
MacPro Xeon / Dual 2.66 processor / 4 GB RAM
Radeon HD3870 Card in Bottom slot
E-Sata card in top slot.
No other cards installed
4 Terabyte Internal Drives
Temperatures (in fahrenheit): (via iStat widget)
HardDrives: 110 / 104 / 108 / 97

CPU B: 92

I've got a G5 quad with the pci-e slots. I've got an Nvidia GeForce 7800GT already in the machine, and just picked up an ATI Radeon x1900 Mac edition to run a couple more monitors. The problem I'm running into is how do I supply power to the second card since the only 6 pin pcie connector I can find on the mainboard is going to the 1st video card? Does a splitter exist, or if I spliced two cables together would enough amperage be supplied? Both cards run off of a mini 6 pin pcie to standard 6 pin pcie cable. This may be a crazy alternative, but I've got a pc I always run right alongside the mac that has a couple extra pcie power connections available. Could I run a power cable out of the pc and connect it to the Radeon card in the G5? I saw an older thread where about midway down someone mentions successfully adding a radeon 1900 as a second card in the G5, but it never mentions the power connections. [URL]

Ok so I have a old Mac Performa 640CD/Dos that I am trying to to get up and running again. I had a monitor for it but it fell off the couch and broke. So I thought maybe I can use an adapter with it in order to use PC VGA monitor. Well after getting the first adapter and trying it, no luck, then I tried one that had dip switches on it. Tried 640 x 480, 800 x 600, almost all the dip switch combination with no luck on getting anything on the screen. Could it be that I might have a bad video card and it needs replaced? Or is this particular model not compatible with PC VGA monitors?

I'm thinking of adding a second monitor and instead of using the second DVI port on my 8800GT I'd like to just add an ATI 2600XT and plug the second monitor into that, saving extra strain on the 8800GT.
My questions are:
1) Do the 8800GT and 2600XT play nice together in one box?
2) Can an application grab just one monitor without using windowed mode? (simple e.g. WoW running full screen on the 8800GT and the desktop showing on the 2600XT).
