Changing Email From Imap To Pop In Mail / Won't Give POP Option Anymore
Jun 3, 2012
I accidentally set up an email account using IMAP.I meant to use POP.I have deleted the account and have attempted to set the account up again but it now automatically uses IMAP and does not give me the option to chose POP.Using a brand new Imac using as my macbook just died. Latest software etc.
It seems I have to change from using POP to IMAP but I'm not quite sure how.
I use Mail.app on my macbook. I have about 4 different email accounts, (2 for different employers, 1 for freelance work, and 1 personal) plus I'm in a couple of high traffic newsgroups.
All gets downloaded to Mail.app via POP access.
The newsgroup and junk emails get filtered out into their respective folders.
Other mail is filtered into other folders. Some gets to my inbox.
I want the non-newsgroup / junk mail to auto-sync with my iphone.
That means :
Appearing in the same folder in my iPhone and on my laptop
Reading mail on one device will mark it as read on the other.
Email sent from one device will appear in the sent folder on the other.
So it seems I need to change from POP to iMAP, but I'm not quite sure how to set it all up to deal with my 4 accounts and various folders. In Mail.app I have about 30 rules for filtering.
I have an IMAP email account that's over a decade old. It's going away soon so I'm trying to figure out how to get a complete local copy of all that email. There are a total of around 100 folders with anywhere from 5 to over 2000 emails in each folder.
The problem: there's email on the server that isn't showing up in Mail. For instance one folder (according to the webmail interface) has 771 messages. Mail says that folder has 700 messages.Looking at the webmail interface I can easily find several of the 71 emails that are not appearing in Mail. In Mail, if I select the folder and "Get Account Info" and look at the Quotas section, it lists the correct number of email messages (771). If I rebuild the folder, as it's being rebuilt the blue progress bar at the bottom left of Mail says there are 771 incoming messages. But when it's done, I can only see 700.
I just double checked on a second computer (MacBook Pro, also latest 10.7 version & Mail) and it's the same there, it only sees 700 messages. Now, repeat this times the roughly 100 folders .What's going on here? Why isn't Mail downloading or displaying these emails?
I can receive but cannot send IMAP email on my 1&1 mail account from Mac OS 10.10.1 Yosemite Mail on my new Macbook Pro. The account is set up the same port, password, username, server name as on my old Macbook and emails are sending just fine on the old computer.
When I hit send on the new Macbook Pro running Yosemite I get this message: "The connection to host ... on port 993 failed. Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click Try Later to leave the message in your Outbox until it can be sent."It shows the server as (offline)I've tried erasing and typing in the password. I've tried both checking and unchecking Automatically detect and maintain account settings. Still cannot send. I also have a Gmail account and it is working...
I am currently using Apple Mail on Lion with IMAP enabled for emails. A couple of times I have had only part of an email downloaded. The full email is viewable on the iPhone and through a web browser. Is there anyway to resync an email to have it finish loading the message and attachments? I have tried to Sync the full Apple Mail program but the email did not change. I am assuming this problem is occurring when the internet loses the connection.
I have two email accounts (IMAP) on my Mail App on MacBook and even though I configured it to sync manually it still does sync by itself each time I get a new message. How I can put it to really sync manually.
In the Mail app, I'm getting a circle with a triangle and an exclamation mark inside it. I can't receive or send my from this (Outlook Express) account. It's a work email account, but it has been working fine until now. I clicked Rebuild from the app menu (trying to fix it!), but that only removed all existing emails in the mailbox.
I want to update Aperture, but when I go to the App Store it tells me "All apps are up to date". I'm running an iMac, OS 10.6.8, current Aperture version 3.1.3 (latest version stated on App Store as 3.2.3).
I've tried downloading the update manually, but the updater doesn't work and tells me my version of the app must be updated through the App Store. (This is especially annoying because I transferred my Aperture Library to a MacBook which has a newer version of Aperture installed and it reformatted my library to a newer version. Now I've copied the library back to the MacBook but Aperture won't open the library because it's a requires the newer version of Aperture!)
I partitioned my MacPro HD to use Mac OS 10.7.4 and Windows Vista. All of a sudden holding down the Option key at start up no longer gives the optional start up systems for selection. How do I g et that function back?
'm new to itunes and was reading the online help manual, which says that when I click delete on a song, I should have two options. One is to remove the song from my library and the other is delete the song from my computer permanently. I would like to delte the song from my computer, but the only option is "are you sure you want to remove the song from your itunes library"
I'm using a pc and have left my songs in their original location and have not imported them into itunes folder.
I currently use a POP but, because of all my iPhone issues and it automatically redownloading 3,500 emails everytime I do a fresh install of the OS, I want to change to IMAP.
My email provider says that, by doing that, all the emails on their server will vanish. Losing my emails is not an option!
So, is there a way of saving the emails locally on my Mac?
I have a very important email which i wish to recover.I changed my account in mail client, by deleting my exsisting pop account and adding a new imap account. My new imap account now has only messages from 5 days old. The email which i would like to recover is upto a few months old, I beginning to panic as I feel i may have done something i shouldn't of, and that particular is email very valuable. Is there a way to get it back?Yes i do have back ups, but my external hard drive decided to blow up on me at the worst time.I have also checked my server for that account and they have told me my pop account would have deleted emails once downloaded. I am with bluehost if that means anything.
I am not that new of a mac user, but one of the biggest things that Im having trouble with coming from windows is that in windows when you get a dialogue box it comes with a selected option, pressing enter would automatically activate the selected option. Now this is the same in OSX, but in windows you could press tab and the highlighted option would change. For example, in a save dont save box, how do I change the blue shadow without making a trip to the mouse?
Since some time my search functions in Mail and Calendar aren't working properly. I can find my mails in the spotlight function from lion itself, but inside the mail program I get no results.
I tried several things: 1. Delete all my accounts on (is IMAP) and redownloaded them from the server. 2. Removed envelope files in Library folder mail 3. Add harddisk to privacy map on spotlight preferences and removed it (saw reindexing from harddisk) 4. Checked terminal with following command: 'sudo mdutil -s /Volumes/*', results:
(Backups is external network drive for backups). (Server Data is external USB drive for data from clients) (Server Systems is local drive, not shown in terminal ?!?)
Possible causes to problem: Reinstalled server software (and got it working properly this time), Renamed harddisk, installed back-up software named carbon copy cloner, setup VPN.
I am migrating my mail and archive folders from Mail to iCloud. I moved 20+ folders and over 8k messages with no problem by dragging and dropping the folder from 'On my mac' section to 'iCloud' section in Mail. The last two folders were the largest with over 1.5k in each folder. Over 1200 of the messages in each went in to iCloud without a hitch. Then I got this error:
The IMAP command “APPEND” (to [mail box name]) failed with server error: Message contains NUL characters.
There are 149 messages left in one folder and 203 in another folder. Try as I might, it will not work. I tried Rebuild mailbox option in menu and exported to Mail and mbox format and then re-importing. Still does not work.
I've been searching in vain around the internet for a few days now for a way to change the hotkey for switching between spaces (by default, option-arrow keys, though I have changed it to command-option-arrow keys) to option-tab and shift-option-tab. To be more specific, I'd like option-tab to switch to the space to the right, and shift-option-tab to switch to the space to the left. I have downloaded BetterTouchTool (http://blog.boastr.net/?page_id=1722), and it can assign any shortcut key to the simple option of bringing up the spaces interface itself, but I can't find a way to assign a different shortcut key to actually switching spaces. Interestingly, using that app, I was able to assign a five finger swipe (which blew my mind, by the way) in the corresponding direction for which space I wanted to switch to by assigning the gesture to the shortcut key for switching spaces (so, five finger swipe to the right is assigned to command-option-right arrow).
I am new to MacRumors Forums and I have a problem with both my Alt/Option Key and the left side Command Key on my MacBook Pro. Basically, whenever pressed the Alt/Option Key performs the "Expose" function revealing all the open windows so that I cant ever actually use the Alt/Option key in various key commands with different programs. Also, the left side Command Key, whenever pressed, hides all my open windows to reveal the Desktop, but thankfully there is a right side Command Key to my keyboard that I can use. Now, Ive gone into the System Preferences and tried to alter the Keyboard short-cut commands as well as restore the defaults to no avail, I just cant seem to get it to revert back to normalcy - I need this key to work right so that I can do the necessary shortcuts in Logic Pro.
I'm using mail 2.1.3 on a G4 powerbook running Mac os 10.4.11. I've switched mail servers today, and all my email addresses are now imap instead of pop. That meant I had to create new email accounts in mail, and as I did, I deleted the old ones, as I would no longer need them. Unfortunately, All of my email seems to have gone with all the old pop accounts. Did I just lose all my email??? I really need to get some of it back, its been a few months since I last backed up. I did have all of my accounts set to not delete trash for 30 days, so I'm hoping its still some where. Am I screwed? Why would Apple not warn me heavily before doing something BIG like deleting all of my email?
I consider myself pretty savvy and this problem arose when I tried to add my school's email to Mail.app... I took my computer into the Apple store and they were unsuccessful after about an hour of trying.
Now, I've read on Titan Apps (the section on the CSUF school portal) that you have to create a password solely for POP/IMAP access, and I did that, and I made a new Mail account with the new settings and I'm still receiving errors about the password not being right to get new mail.
I have set up IMAP accounts on my iphone, MacBook Pro and IPad 3 but cannot get it set up on my iMac.It appears as an account butwill not connect and receive messages.
My Mail application (Leopard) is sometimes incredibly delayed in downloading mail from the server. If I have Thunderbird open on the side sometimes I receive mail in it but have to wait 15 minutes before Mail gets it. Also, my iPhone gets the mail in time always, though one would think that the mail fetching system is similar to that in Mail. Does anybody else have this problem and know a way around it? It's really frustrating and I'm considering moving to Thunderbird for good.
I use IMAP email so that all folders are based on a server, rather than on my computer (learnt the hard way when my computer crashed and I lost everything). Today when I went to save an email in a folder on entourage, entourage crashed and when I reloaded the app the folder had gone. I tried again with another email and another folder and the same thing happened. When I log on to my email account using the providers webmail service I can see that the folder is still there, it just won't show up in entourage.

I'm using Mac mail. I have a hotmail acct that I use MBOX mail as a go-between between it and Mac Mail so I can use IMAP and get me hotmail folders etc. It's working great escept for the fact that sometimes there are long delays where I don't receive emails that are coming in. Sometime not even when I click "get mail." I have to right click on the account and click "get info." That will start showing all the data on the account and usually bring in the new emails that have been sitting there for a while.
Since updating to Snow Leopard 10.6.1 Mail.app has been unable to retieve IMAP mail from my OS X Leopard 10.5.x server running the standard cyrusd. Does anybody have any clues? Mail just sits there syncing the mailbox forever, it never stops. If I turn on logging to file, it just continuously FETCHes from IMAP and never ends. It's driving me mad. My iphone can get the IMAP mail from the same server absolutely fine. I added the mail account to a new OS X Snow Leopard user account, and that also failed to get anywhere. So its not corrupted data on my MBP. It doesn't appear to be corrupted data on the OS X server either, as the iPhone works.
I'm using Mail with a gmail IMAP account. Recently a friend sent me an email with an Excel workbook attached, but the attachment didn't show up in Mail (no attachment in the message, no paperclip icon indicating an attachment in the Inbox). The really strange part is that if I go into my gmail account using a browser, the attachment is there. I received several other similar attachments from other people, and all those attachments showed up in Mail.
Yesterday, I had to re-format my external hard drive so that it could be "recordable" within Pro Tools, which wasn't a major issue, I just had to move everything from my Lacie drive to another drive, do the format, and then throw it all back on. It took a little while but this also included moving my nearly 60gb itunes library. Now that it is on the newly formatted hard drive, itunes doesn't seem to be able to find the majority of the songs any more. I've tried changing the music folder and a few other things, and there is no way I'm going through and doing the "cant find music - click here to find it" palava. Is anyone aware of a way that you can "mass find" all of the music in any way other than starting the library again and adding all the music (I don't really want to lose all of my play counts and ratings if possible!)
I just moved over to IMAP in Mail.app and basically not all my mail was on the server so I had to copy a load across from the previous POP3 mailbox. It is now spinning and will not receive mail at all.
