Bad Files Out Of QuickTime Broadcaster
Jun 7, 2012
I am using QuickTime Broadcaster (1.5.3, running on Mac OS X Server 10.6.8) to stream a monthly sales meeting to our employees. The stream is also saved for later viewing. It's this saved stream I'm having issues with. The resulting QuickTime files are very difficult to deal with. QTB automatically closes a file when it gets to 2GB and starts a new one (a little more than four hours of stream, given my present settings). The first of these files will not end cleanly, but instead has a single frame repeated numerous times. Fortunately, QT Pro understands that the video actually ends at the place where these repeated frames begin, so that part is easy enough to edit out.
It's the subsequent files that have the bigger issue. There seems to be some kind of time code problem. When I try to stitch the files together in any app, including MPEG Streamclip, QuickTime Pro, or iMovie, things go haywire. For instance, if I copy the entirety of the second file to the clipboard in QT Pro, then paste it onto the end of the first file, QT Pro refuses to update the view in the viewer. Audio plays, but video doesn't. If I try to save this resulting file, I get "The movie contains an incorrect time value."Often, I can cut out the first few seconds of the second file and it pastes OK. However, this does not always work. Anyway, I do not want to lose any time from the presentation. This seems to happen irrespective of the video format that I've selected for streaming. Does anyone have any experience working with these files?

When I open one of the files a dialog box comes up that says, "Additional software is required for quicktime to playback this media" with a link to the quicktime components page.
If I just play the file anyway the sound is all garbled and there's no video at all, it just stays black. Also, the same exact thing happens with realplayer. does this mean there's a problem with the files or something?

I have MacBook Pro with Lion 10.7.3. My .mov files from several years ago will not open and will not play using Quicktime or any other player. They worked 1 year ago, but just tried them today and they all say "The movie could not be opened. This file is not a movie file." I have not touched them for a year so they haven't changed.

I suspect that this has been asked before, but how do I now play .mov files. I created some movies a few years ago for teaching purposes and need to use them again. However, neither iMovie nor Quicktime seem to recognise/support the .mov format.

In the last couple days, I think since I installed the last upgrade in the OS, my QT is 'unable to complete the process' of opening wmv files. Months ago, I think after I upgraded to Lion, QT stopped allowing me to view avi files. The file opens, and I can scroll through the content, but to 'play' button doesn't work. I can still view those files using DivX Player 8.2.2. These are all files that used to work just fine with QT. Is there anything I can do to restore this functionality to QT?

I recorded a movie with isight-a very long one at that-around 3 hours. When I try to play back I receive error message "The movie is not in a format that QuickTime Player understands." How to play? I have Quicktime Player 10 running from Snow Leopard. Inside the folder for the event in imovie it shows the movie file but with a zero kb size. Also has an imovie cache folder.

everytime I launch fcp it asks for the serial number. Not so much a problem but it's semi-annoying. If there's a way to cut that out I'd be greatful to find out.
Second, I can't find the quicktime files i've exported. It goes they the menus and shows a progress bar and even stops normally like it would when the file is finished. I've check everywhere I can think to check. When I try to export under the same file name a pop up says "file already exisits". So I try a differnt name and we repeat the process.

I've got an older Mac (iMac from around 2006) that uses iLife and an older version of Quicktime. Recently I bought a MacBook with Mac OS X and the newest version of Quicktime. I have a camera that connects into my older mac computer but not my laptop so I thought I could put all the video from my camera onto iMovie on my computer and transfer it into Quicktime. I did that easily, so now I have one 10-minute movie clip on Quicktime. I put that clip onto a USB to transfer onto my Macbook but for some reason I can't open the clip. When I try to open it, it doesn't say anything. QuickTime pops up as in use, but the window doesn't open and nothing plays. Why won't this play? And how can I transfer that clip onto my laptop?

I digitised some old home videos and all worked very well, except that now some of them won't open on my iMac (OS X 10.5.4). The files are all .mov files and only one of them opens without any problems with Quicktime, with the rest i get a message saying "The movie could not be opened. This is not a movie file". At the Mac support counter I was told that I just need to download a codec and that should solve the problem - but I lost the piece of paper where he wrote down the name of the that codec and I can't remember what it was now... done tons of googling and nothing seems to match.

The subject line says it all. When I export files with Quicktime Pro, it sometimes creates a .xip file with the .mov file. The key word is 'sometimes'. I just exported 43 files with the exact same settings, and eight of them ended up with .xip files.

I have edited several videos using Final Cut Express and exported them as .mov files to my desktop. Now, because I have a small internal hard drive (128GB SSD), I copy all of my raw footage to an external hard drive and then delete the files from my Mac HD. But, I keep the finished videos on my desktop. When I try to play the video while the hard drive is plugged in, QuickTime opens and plays the video just fine. But, when the external hard drive is NOT connected and I try to play the video (from my Mac HD), QuickTime won't open it nor play it. If I absolutely have to, I will carry the external HD around with me so I can play my videos, but I was just wondering if it had to do with the codec (H.264) my OS (10.6.8) QuickTime X or FCE (4.1).

I need to distinguish between MP4 and MOV files without using the extension .mov or .mp4.
If I use FTYP major_brand = 'qt ' as the distinguishing factor, is that sufficient? Or do I need some information from compatible_brands as well?
Can we have mov files where major_brand != 'qt ', Ex If 'qt ' is one of the compatible_brands but not major_brand: would we call it a valid mov file?

Recently I noticed that ALL of the audio from an entire folder of .mov files has disappeared. Video playback is fine. I tried to export from Quicktime to experiemtn but it suggests that the file is corrupt and can't be exported...but all of them? Files are being kept on external drive. Could Lion be causing this somehow?
