QuickTime :: Distinguish Between MP4 And MOV Files Without Using The Extension .mov Or .mp4

May 8, 2012

I need to distinguish between MP4 and MOV files without using the extension .mov or .mp4.

If I use FTYP major_brand = 'qt  ' as the distinguishing factor, is that sufficient? Or do I need some information from compatible_brands as well?

Can we have mov files where major_brand != 'qt  ', Ex If 'qt  ' is one of the compatible_brands but not major_brand: would we call it a valid mov file?

Software :: Video Files With .wmv Extension

Sep 30, 2010

I was trying to play some video files with a .wmv extension. I thought I had done this before through Windows Media Player, but this time I got an error message saying something about Real Audio being incompatible with Quick Time. I also tried copying and pasting the video URL into the Windows Media Player window for that purpose, but it still wouldn't play. What is the nature of this problem? I'm uneasy about not being able to play video that is in a widely used format as well as about that quirky Real AUdio/QuickTime message. This is all very confusing!

OS X :: Opening Files With No Extension Names

Jun 26, 2008

I just got my new MacbookPro. It is annoying that the Terminal is set as the default opener for those files without an extension name. For example, a file like "car" will be opened by the terminal when I double click it. The terminal will execute each line of the file as a command. Is there any way to set TextEdit.app as the default opener for any file that is not explicitly assigned to an application?

Safari :: Downloading .wav Files With .exe Extension?

Safari downloads .wav files from my dictation manager web site with a .exe extension. I'm assuming this has something to do with the MIME types defined on that page. OS X V10.7 Lion :: Move (or Copy) All Files With Same Extension To A Common Location?

Jun 26, 2012

At times I would like to gather all files of a certain extension (aif or jpg or xlsx or¦) in one location. By adding the extension parameter to the finder's FIND command, I can easily see them all, but that's only the first half. How do I now move, or copy them all into a single folder, say, on the desktop?

Applications :: FACES In IPhoto 09 Meant Able To Learn To Distinguish Faces From One Another?

Jan 10, 2010

Is FACES in iPhoto '09 meant to be able to "learn" to distinguish faces from one another? I've tagged a lot of faces and I thought once iPhoto had a certain number of images of a face it would be able to sort the remaining pictures better. But there are a lot of faces popping up under each thumbnail and they look nothing like the people I'm trying to tag. Was I expecting too much of FACES? Could I be doing something wrong?

OS X :: Why Won't Quicktime Play My .AVI Files

Dec 18, 2008

When I open one of the files a dialog box comes up that says, "Additional software is required for quicktime to playback this media" with a link to the quicktime components page.

If I just play the file anyway the sound is all garbled and there's no video at all, it just stays black. Also, the same exact thing happens with realplayer. does this mean there's a problem with the files or something?

QuickTime :: Viewing Avi And Wmv Files With 10.1 And OS 10.7.4?

May 15, 2012

In the last couple days, I think since I installed the last upgrade in the OS, my QT is 'unable to complete the process' of opening wmv files. Months ago, I think after I upgraded to Lion, QT stopped allowing me to view avi files.  The file opens, and I can scroll through the content, but to 'play' button doesn't work.  I can still view those files using DivX Player 8.2.2. These are all files that used to work just fine with QT.  Is there anything I can do to restore this functionality to QT?

Bad Files Out Of QuickTime Broadcaster

Jun 7, 2012

I am using QuickTime Broadcaster (1.5.3, running on Mac OS X Server 10.6.8) to stream a monthly sales meeting to our employees. The stream is also saved for later viewing. It's this saved stream I'm having issues with. The resulting QuickTime files are very difficult to deal with. QTB automatically closes a file when it gets to 2GB and starts a new one (a little more than four hours of stream, given my present settings). The first of these files will not end cleanly, but instead has a single frame repeated numerous times. Fortunately, QT Pro understands that the video actually ends at the place where these repeated frames begin, so that part is easy enough to edit out.

It's the subsequent files that have the bigger issue. There seems to be some kind of time code problem. When I try to stitch the files together in any app, including MPEG Streamclip, QuickTime Pro, or iMovie, things go haywire. For instance, if I copy the entirety of the second file to the clipboard in QT Pro, then paste it onto the end of the first file, QT Pro refuses to update the view in the viewer. Audio plays, but video doesn't. If I try to save this resulting file, I get "The movie contains an incorrect time value."Often, I can cut out the first few seconds of the second file and it pastes OK. However, this does not always work. Anyway, I do not want to lose any time from the presentation. This seems to happen irrespective of the video format that I've selected for streaming. Does anyone have any experience working with these files?
