Applications :: Default .mp4 Files To Open With Quicktime?
May 29, 2010
Is there a way of defaulting .mp4 files to open in Quicktime? I'm experiencing an issue in which movie files in .mp4 format are for some reason opening in another application I use for audio editing.
I can still play the movie file in Quicktime, but only if I right click it and select it from the "Open With" menu.

By default, I save all my word documents in rich text format (.rtf). After I installed Snow Leopard, these files now open by default with Text Edit.
Since I want these files to open by default in Microsoft Word 2008, I right clicked on the file, chose "other", selected "Word 2008", and then checked "always open with". However, the files still open by default in Text Edit...

how to open several avi. movie files I have downloaded onto my Mac (version 10.5). First, I tried to open them just simply on QuickTime player, but a got a 'this is not a movie file' error message, so I Google'd and found advice telling me to download VLC in order to open avi files to QuickTime player. So, I downloaded VLC and tried to open one of the files with that - except when it opened on VLC there was no video and only the audio sped up really fast (you know, where they sound like chipmunks xD) and then it stopped. So, baffled, I then tried to open it again on QuickTime, but got that error message again *
So I Google'd a bit more, and found advice telling me to download DivX Player, which should open/play avi files - so, I d/w'd it.... but alas, the files wouldn't play audio or video, it didn't seem to show up.
I've looked on the info when it's opened on VLC, and it describes the streams (not sure what these are) as having both mpga and mpgv codecs.... so do I need to download a program that can open these files? Is there a codec program I need still?
* OR, am I not using VLC player correctly?

I recently upgraded to Snow Leopard, and therefore have Quicktime X in addition to Quicktime 7 Pro (I paid the $30 to upgrade). Since I have the Pro version of Quicktime 7, I want all movie files to open with Quicktime 7. I opened the Get Info window for a .mov file I just downloaded, switched the default application to Quicktime 7, and pressed the "Change All" button. However, if I close the Get Info window and open it back up, the default application has switched back to Quicktime Player Launcher. How do I get Quicktime 7 to be the default application for all Quicktime files?

By default mp3 files ar opened by Quicktime so the only I can find to change this to my prefered player is to right click "get info" and change "open with" VLC. But this only changes that one file and not all mp3 files on the system.

I have Quicktime Player 10 running from Snow Leopard. Inside the folder for the event in imovie it shows the movie file but with a zero kb size. Also has an imovie cache folder.

No matter what type of file (.avi or .mp4) I try to open, QT immediately goes to "Not Responding"... Software is completely up to date. I don't know what else to do... It won't let me trash QT to re-install but I think that's what I need to do.

I have recently dipped a toe into the world of torrents (I know this is probably something that you cannot be seen to condone), some software packages contain exe files which previously my Macbook Pro, running Tiger, has been able to read and open but recently TextEdit has been set as the default application to open them. I'm not sure how this has happened, is there anyway around this without having to reboot the OS?

I want to have OpenOffice as the default program to open .doc, .xls and .ppt files, but when I try to set that by chosing the check box that confirms, "Make this program the default program for opening these files?" my choice doesn't "stick" for the next time I open these files. Is there another way to make OpenOffice the default program for these files, or does OfficeMac not play nicely to allow that?

So I have been trying to convert my Blu-Rays using a combination of MakeMKV and Handbrake, so I have been able to get the MKV and am able to play them, but once I do the handbrake, and it runs through fine, I get an error when I try to play the m4v file. It says "The document _____ could not be opened. The movie is not in a format the Quicktime Player understands."

I'd like all my finder windows to appear the same when navigating through folders, but I'm noticing that finder is not always taking notice of the "set as defaults" button. The way I've tried to do it is to open a finder window and push cmd+J. I prefer the list view, so I check the "always open in list" box, set the icon size and uncheck "icon preview".
However, as I navigate deeper into folders, I notice some folders will no longer remember these and for example, will start to show the icon preview. In Windows, I remember you used to set up a random window to appear exactly how you wanted it, enter folder options and hit "default view for all windows".

How do I make "RAR expander" my default program for .rar files?Or is there another program you would recommend?
Background:I used "RAR expander" for a long time until I came across a file it was not compatible with. I then downloaded and installed "The Unarchiver" and it worked on the file "RAR expander" would not open.
After that "The Unarchiver" became the default program for .rar files. The problem is that "The Unarchiver" does not work well with password protected files. So for months now I have just manually opened "RAR expander" whenever I try to open a password protected file.
I want to keep both programs so I will be able to open any file, but as I rarely use "The Unarchiver" I would like to have that be the one I have to dig through sub-folders to use. That is, unless there is some excellent program I have not tried.
