Neither file or web sharing options appear in OSX Server 10.5.8. Had a so called expert migrate our old G4 server up to a newer G5 with 10.5.8. The job has never been finished and we cannot connect our accounts and other PCs to the network.

We are a small business with 2 mac mini's, 2 macbook laptops and another macbook pro laptop who is remote. (the remote laptop is not a deal breaker) We are beginning to have a nightmare with file storage, everyone is saving their own work to their own workstation and it's becoming difficult to share files etc. Basically, our requirements for a solution are:Â
- Sensible file server, allowing all on-site computers to use the server as a main file storage
- Something I can back all computers up with from time machine
- Useful to restrict certain users to certain files
- Useful to have external access to files when off site and via the likes of iPad etc. Â
I've looked in a NAS Raid drive and the OsX Lion Server and also the Time capsule and am just so confused at what to buy. Although the calendar sharing options etc. on the server would be useful, we can also do this via icloud. It's mainly the file access that is such a problem. Â I wonder whether a time capsule would be good enough as a file server - which we then back up to the cloud to secure the data.
We have a brand new Mac Pro (12 core with 64GB of RAM) running OS X Lion Server in a corporate environment. The server is running only file sharing and software update servers, and we have around 40 users who need to be connected over AFP at all times. This company runs 24/7 and we have an XSan environment using an ATTO Celerity 8GB 4 channel fiber card (84EN) along with a 6 port 10GB Ethernet card. The Ethernet card is configured in a link aggregation bond using ports 1-4. The idea is that clients who do not have fiber cards installed on their machines can still connect to the SAN via Ethernet and this file server. They AFP connect to the share, and of course the share is the SAN. It's a single mount point and everyone has read/write access.Â
The issue is that this machine keeps crashing (multiple times per day) and I cannot find any reason why. Syslog shows nothing of value and I've called into Apple Enterprise Support who also brought nothing to the table.Â
We initially had SMB and AFP file sharing activated but as soon as a Windows 7 client connected the machine was brought down. So, I disabled SMB via terminal (sudo serveradmin stop smb) and deactivated it via the Server app for the share point). That at least allows the machine to be up for 4-6 hours before crashing again.Â
This is seemingly the simplest of setups for file sharing and I would've thought that this beast of a machine would be able to handle being a file server without issue for far more than 40 clients. I'm seeing high CPU usage, which Apple support told me was perfectly normal (around 60% on the kernel_task process and around 55% on the AppleFileServer process). It also seems to consume all 64GB of memory, though it shows 60GB as inactive, but at the same time it's paging in and out.Â
Virtually all of the clients are running Lion (10.7.4), the server itself is running 10.7.4. There are a few ethernet connected clients running 10.6 along with two running 10.5. As I mentioned I disabled SMB so there are no Windows computers connecting to this machine at this time (though it would be nice to get that functionality back if AFP can be stabilized).Â
This company simply cannot be down, especially not multiple times per day. The only way to bring things back and running from a crash is to hard boot the machine via the power button as you cannot perform a restart or a shutdown. Once the machine comes back up everything is back to working order for a few more hours until it happens again.

How does Apple Server work?Is it possible to just use the file sharing feature?I would like to set up a file sharing service similar to dropbox where users log in and can see there files as well as files that everyone can access. In iTunes when I right click on a song and click "get info", then change some info, it doesn't stick. It goes right back to what I already had in there before. I then realized that this is because every file inside my iTunes music folder is set for "read only" and not "read & write". So after I change it to "read & write" all changes I make in iTunes will take. However, I have a lot of music and therefore a lot of files inside my iTunes music folder. I am not familiar with hosting locally as I have always used GoDaddy.  There are several sites set up, so I have some "template" to go off of, but I need the basics. If i purchase the domain somewhere and the multiple sites are hosted on a single IP, how can I direct to a specific folder? Do I just create a folder within the volume all others are then make it a shared folder? Set the protocol options to match one that is alread there?Is there a beginers guide to this, and all the settings and options available somewhere?Â

Has anyone noticed a strange 10 user file sharing limit after upgrading to 10.7.4 server? Using DeployStudio to mass deploy 10.7.4 Lion images in a school. Since upgrading to 10.7.4 server, I am now limited to 10 logins on the repository. Thought this might be a DeployStudio issue, but it seems more like the server is imposing the restriction. If I do a manual login to the shared folder where the image files are kept on the server, I can only do it from 10 computers and computer 11 will refuse to login.

I am trying to setup a Mac Pro with Lion Server that will allow us to access our videos and images via the local network.Â
I have created a group and populated it with the names/accounts of those that will be using the server.Â
I have added both installed drives as share points, the smaller one is the system/boot drive and the larger one contains the video and images (both drives are internally-mounted). I've also enabled the group's permission to read/write.Â
We are able to login to the server via afp but we only see our individual home directories on the system/boot drive.Â
I have just purchased a new iMac with Leopard. I already own a MBP with Tiger and I am trying to shares files between the two. The MBP connects to iMac and shows files easy as...however I have enabled sharing on iMac when I choose Network it recognises the MBP but always says connecting and after a few minutes shows connection failed.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have two users defined on my macbook (one is New, and the other one, the Old one, is what I've always had).I was re-configuring File Sharing on the Old user.I turned files sahring off in the Old User, but when I log into the New, I can still acess to some folders that I have never set to be shared; only few folders have the red restricted access on it. The New User does have file sharing disabled, and non of its folder can be accessed; so, it's working Ok for this New User.Â

I first had was the computer names for the iMac was set to MacBook and the actual macbook names switched to MacBook (2). I figured out how to change that, simple enough. On going problem is that now on the iMac I am set to admin but cant view other users folders they have the minus sign in the bottom corner of the folder and some folders and files have the Name "Staff" for permissions. The only users should be myself "TJ" and my wife "Laura". The MacBook is fine with just her and I as users but the iMac is goofy with "staff".
View 7 Replies View RelatedGot a Mac Pro in a server lab... it has 2 hard drives, IP address is static and assigned from Sys. Prefs, not from DHCP server in the location.
I don't have physical access to lab, and I want to install 10.4 or 10.4 Server on the *other* partition that is empty at the moment. Has to be clean isntall, so can't just clone the existing hd. Both hard drives are 500 GB, other has only 10.4.10, other is empty. If it will make it work better, it will be an option to partition the empty one.
VNC, ARD and ssh work.
How can I install Mac OS X or Server??? Install discs can be located either from another Server where it is backed up, or local dmg or ISO file.
Would selecting Server to be installed instead enable ssh to be open from when it boots to installation? As long as ssh, ARD or VNC in any combination enable me to log in it should work. (or even just ssh, can always kickstart).It may get another IP though when booted to installation as I've got no guarantee it's totally bound to MAC addresses... no one has a clue of how the DHCP server settings work in that location.
I would love to use asr to restore as that would be a lot more simple, but I would still need to install the version I want to have restored somewhere else. That's not an option .. as the only space available for that is on that Mac Pro.
I want to share 1 aperture 3 library with multiple users. I do NOT want them to have any deleting or adding control.I want to share 1 itunes library. I want multiple users to HAVE control. I know it has something to do with the share folder.

I got my second Mac Mini. I decided to get the Server Version because I liked the hardware (2 500 GB drives) and I wanted to play around with the Server Features. The Apple Guy at the Store did not indicate there was any of the client software missing on the Server Version. He mainly just said it was missing a DVD Drive which I new. Being fairly new to the Mac OS I was not really sure what to ask. My background is many years of Windows Experience (server and client). So, I kind of assume it would have everything the normal Mac OS has plus all of the Server Add-on's (like the Windows Server). Was I wrong, is it missing more then just iLife? I understand iWork does not come on either version.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI installed an HP all-in-one printer on my server, connected via USB. In Serveradmin / Print I said to share it via IPP, AppleTalk and LPR. Other Macs on my network can see it, but nobody can print to it. They all insist it's a "generic postscript" printer and any discussion fails miserably.
A mac client installed a similar HP printer. Everyone else can see it and print to it.
I would like to ask about the macbook pro late 2008. I am willing to own a network local sharing server in my University so, students can upload their multimedia files and movies etc to my mac using the local network of the university connection. Student will use torrents apps to download files from the server so they log to the website which I will create and they download the tracking file then they open it and use it to download the file from the server via torrent apps. My Macbook pro is 2.4 with 4g ram and with 380G HDD I own a new macbook pro late 2009 so I will not use the old one and I will keep it online 24/7. But I don't know if I can use it or not for this purpose.

I have been unsuccessful in figuring out how to view iCal between computers at home. Can it be set so that updates on one can be viewed automatically on the other? I am wanting it so that it is running unified and not separately between computers. And/ or so that when DH logs in, he sees updates I've made from when I logged in? I have a Cable Modem connected to the Mac Mini via the USB connector and the server surfs fine. The DHCP server is now correctly working I think and the clients are getting the correct IP addresses now.

We have an Xserve (intel) with two ethernet ports running on OS X 10.6.8 server. It is connected to our network and sharing files with local users and authentication from our PDC (over an AD network). I need to setup a private network so that we can keep a few PCs off of our primary network (primarily to keep them from getting updates pushed or malware). Using the two ethernet ports, this should be do-able. It's practically automatic on a couple Windows boxes we have setup. However, when I plug a small router into the second ethernet port, I instantly lose the PDC communication on the other. I'm not sure if there are other issues at this point or not because there hasn't been a time when I can bring the system down (yet).Â

I've enabled OpenDirectory and verified that the users I'm creating are being created in (they show up in the Server app and Workgroup Manager app, but not in System Preferences | Users).Â
File sharing seems to be working fine, but I don't like the fact that each user has access to their home folder share when they connect to the server using a mac elsewhere on the network. I prefer only the shares I explicitly set up to be available.Â
Thus, a couple questionsWhy is there a home folder created on the server at all? Do I really need a /users/johndoe folder for each and every account in OD?How can I configure sharing such that I won't see the home folder when I connect from another mac on the network? Tiger to Snow Leopard and then found out I had lost my connection to the Netgear WGPS606 Print server that for years has served me flawlessly to use my HP Photosmart 8100 printer. Apparently it has something to do with Apple having removed support for Appletalk (???) Searching the web and Netgears website I can only find the instructions for Tiger, which I already had back when I first set up the print server.

I recently bought a Mac Mini Server to use as a HTPC/Server with OSX Server installed. I can connect to any of my other computers FROM the server with Screen Sharing, but I can't connect TO the Mac Mini Server from any of my other computers. All of the settings seem to be correct and the same as my other computers. Does anyone have any ideas as to how to get this to work?
View 5 Replies View RelatedFor the life of me, I cannot share movies stored on my iMac with any other device except my Apple TV.
I currently have most of my movie library archived in iTunes (90+ movies) that I converted to .mp4 or .mv4 using Handbrake. All of the movies are available on my AppleTV. I have three networked PCs, one ethernet, two wireless. I have enabled file sharing to all computers. I have installed iTunes on the wired PC as well as one wireless PC. I can share my iTunes music (but no video) between the iMac and PCs.
All three PCs are Windows XP SP2 machines. I can navigate to the movie folder located on the Mac on any computer. I cannot open any movie file. I can open and access shared PDFs, spreadsheets, word documents, pretty much anything I have access to EXCEPT the movies.
I CAN copy the movie from the host Mac to any PC with no issues. Then, Quicktime will play the movie. But, no matter what I try, I cannot stream the movies to any other device, except the Apple TV. (There are no movies stored on the Apple TV. I have a Time Capsule managing a wireless network that streams movies with only a few seconds delay.) I could see there being a time lag streaming a movie to a laptop with 500mb RAM and a G wireless connection, but the wired PC is connected with ethernet. It WILL allow me to copy a 2Gb movie from the iMAC to the PC in less than three minutes.
I initially only had "Read" permissions on the folder in question, but I did try "Read and Write" access to see what happened. Nada.
I cannot find a definitive answer as to sharing movies with iTunes. But, even if iTunes will only share music libraries, I still think that I should be able to stream movies by accessing the file directly. The wired PC is in my daughter's room, and I would like her to be able to stream movies from the iMac. If I navigate directly to the folder in question, one of two things happen. If I try to open a .mp4, I get "Error 50: An unknown error occured" If I try a .mv4, iTunes will open, but nothing happens. I can view the movies playlist under my shared library, but nothing happens when I attempt to open one.
Eventually, I would like to softmod a used XBOX my sister gave me to stream movies on the iMac to another TV. I even tried XBMC on the wired PC to act as a media manager since iTunes would not pull movies off the network. It will find the movies, but it will stall (I did not let it keep trying after 15 minutes of "buffering" a movie.)
I know I'm not the only one trying to share a library. Even if iTunes will not let me do it, I should be able to set something up so others on my LAN can access these files.
