Applications :: Why Won't The Terminal Log In

Mar 21, 2010

It was working fine until yesterday, and now when I open it, all I get is a blank screen, and it's stuck at "Login", and I can't use it. What happened, and how can I fix it?

Applications :: Unable To Use Terminal / Terminal Stucks At Blank Login Window

Oct 20, 2009

Anybody see this before? I opened up and the window is completely blank. There is nothing in it whatsoever. Looks as if bash never started. The title bar simply says "Terminal — login — 80x24". I can type whatever I want in the Terminal window like it's a text document and nothing happens. If I restart the computer, this seems to fix the problem, but it seems to only be a temporary fix as the issue happens again soon after.

OS X Server :: Processes Started In Terminal End When Terminal Closed?

Jan 29, 2008

I'm running Symantec Backup Agent on our mac osx server. I start the agent in the terminal (./ It returns a notification that it started the service, however, it doesn't return to the prompt. Closing the terminal gives a warning that the process will be closed if the terminal is closed. Closing it does kill the process. Ctrl+c to return to the prompt also kills the process. So it's as if once the process is started in the terminal, nothing can be altered.

I am not much of a mac guy so please forgive me if this is a stupid question.

Anyone have any advice on how to handle this so the process is ALWAYS running?

OS X :: Unable To Install Terminal App - Run Terminal As Admin?

Aug 19, 2010

I'm on a standard user account and I would really like to install icalbuddy which is a terminal app. When I install apps normally I simply have to provide a admin name and pw, but this doesn't work when it is a terminal app because it requires that the 'su' command be run.

So I thought that I could run terminal as admin through 'su - admin' and then install. But of course the admin account doesn't have access to the user folder where the installer is located. I just can't win.

Applications :: Is There A Terminal App Like Putty

Jan 15, 2009

I like using Putty for terminal emulation, which we use at work to connect to UNIX servers. At home on my Mac, when I use terminal, I don't like it compared to Putty.

For example, I like the copy (double click) and paste (right click) functionailty in Putty.

So, is there any terminal app out there similar to Putty?

Does anybody know if it is possible to send commands or options to Archive via Terminal?

It is possible to invoke Archive and pass it the path to a zip file, and it will uncompress it. However, I would like to also pass it a destination path, and see what other options it may have.

Applications :: Deleted - No Access To CD / DVD

Mar 24, 2010

I have accidentally deleted Utilities/Terminal application By searching I have found that it may be possible to restore Terminal using Pacifist app. But there is a problem, because I don't have my CD/DVD now. I would appreciate if someone could place Terminal on the web that I could download it, or send me it in email. My OSX version is 10.5.8 (but I think it doesn't matter when considering Terminal app).

EDIT: Unfortunately it probably depends on OS version. Terminal from 10.6.2 doesn't work on 10.5.8. If someone has 10.5 MacOS version

But I'd prefer a way that doesn't rely on an http call. Not to mention that my method will fail if/when dyndns changes the format of that page.

I'm starting my career in networking configuration (basically configuring routers & switches) and need advice on a good serial terminal app. Since Terminal that ships w/ Mac OS X doesn't deal w/ serial ports, I've had to resort to using apps like Zterm & QuickTerm. Both of those haven't been updated in years, and they don't really have a "Mac OS X"-ey GUI goodness about them.

I'd like to create the look that something is happening in Terminal without actually doing anything. Sort of like how the Apple ]['s ROM checksum was used for the first-person view in The Terminator.

I'd prefer something that was just providing output, like a checksum, NOT moving or editing files or directories.

Applications :: Terminal Command To Delete A Folder Filed With Locked Files?

I was helping a friend by reformatting his pc and reinstalling windows because it was slow, when I was downloading the drivers for it on my MacBook Pro (didn't have access to the router since it's downstairs and his pc didn't have a wireless card), it downloaded a folder filled with locked files, it comes several folders deep and all of the files are locked, fun. So I tried to delete it using sudo rm -r, but it says I don't have sufficient privileges, anyone know a command I can use to delete it all? I'd rather not do it by hand, that'd take forever.

MacBook Pro :: Select Applications (Terminal / Preferences) Freeze On Mouse Hover

Aug 20, 2014

When I hover my mouse over an application (such as Terminal) it freezes with the message 'process Termainl [pid] caught causing excessive wakeups...'

Some applications (such as Google Chrome) work fine. Others (iTerm, Terminal, Hipchat) are susceptible. If the application exhibits the behaviour - without fail, simply hovering the mouse over the application window, without clicking or giving it explicit focus, will cause it to freeze.

Prior to this, my battery had swollen and the suspicion was that it was pressing against the trackpad resulting in a constant stream of interrupts. I took the battery out and am typing this without the battery - the issue persists.

I also tried disconnecting the trackpad. Same issue, even when using an external mouse to navigate.

Absolutely no response to any key except the enter key - then terminal helpfully says, 'Sorry, try again' What's going on? I just wanna get rid of Virex!!!
