I'm starting my career in networking configuration (basically configuring routers & switches) and need advice on a good serial terminal app. Since Terminal that ships w/ Mac OS X doesn't deal w/ serial ports, I've had to resort to using apps like Zterm & QuickTerm. Both of those haven't been updated in years, and they don't really have a "Mac OS X"-ey GUI goodness about them.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI really wanted to make this topic sticky if possible.
There are many people out here who create a lot of posts asking about what kind of app are good and what do they do ?. There are dozens of videos on youtube on whats in your doc (most of which are outdated).
Honestly I think if people could share what software they have on their macs (both free and payed), with a description of what is does, would help thousands of new mac owners. I looked through the topic on the very top with software recommendations, but it does look a bit dull with only 13 replies that point you to websites where you get bombarded by the insane quantity of software listed there with no proper advice.
I will list my software tomorrow once I get my MBP from repair.
What program would be the best?

View 2 Replies View RelatedAnybody see this before? I opened up Terminal.app and the window is completely blank. There is nothing in it whatsoever. Looks as if bash never started. The title bar simply says "Terminal — login — 80x24". I can type whatever I want in the Terminal window like it's a text document and nothing happens. If I restart the computer, this seems to fix the problem, but it seems to only be a temporary fix as the issue happens again soon after.

I really would like to learn to use the console and terminal on my macs-do any of you know of a good manual, book or otherwise that could serve as a guide? I am hesitant to simply fumble around and learn that way (which is how I've learned everything else) because it is my understanding that one can do serious damage when playing around in terminal!
View 11 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to install some software, however, every time I try to do the "make" command on a Makefile, I get the following error: -bash: make: command not found. The manual page does not exists either. I have no idea why the "make" command doesn't exists. I might have added a missing command in the past, but I don't remember. I'm running Mac OS X 10.5.7. Can anyone guess what the problem is?

Is there a way to make things right again?
I'm looking for a way to keep distraction to a minimum when working. I'd like to have an app (or a setting) that enables me to automatically hide any apps that I switch out of. Are there any apps or hidden settings within OS X out there that would solve this issue for me? I know about Spirited Away, but it doesn't work for me and hasn't been updated in a while.
I'm running OS X v10.6.1.
I've done a little homework myself, so far I know of:
BestMacSoftware
iStat
Pixelmator
VLC
MPlayer
DragThing
gfxCardStatus
DriveGenius
I was told instead of a recieving a CD I had to download software like iPhoto from iTunes. The only option I see is to pay for it. I was told it was included. What am I missing?
Info:
Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.3)
Besides using mac os to install & uninstall apps, what are the best apps out there that can; dwonload from the internet & off a thumb drive all types of files like dmgs, zip files & other odd files types, & install them properly on my mac
And a app that properly & completely uninstalls apps, without leaving thngs in the registry
I'm trying to do something in terminal, and it asks for my password. I press a letter on my keyboard, and nothing appears. I am in the right window and everything, terminal just doesn't react to my typing. However, when I click enter, it says 'Sorry, try again'. So it does react to the enter key.
I'm running Symantec Backup Agent on our mac osx server. I start the agent in the terminal (./agent.be). It returns a notification that it started the service, however, it doesn't return to the prompt. Closing the terminal gives a warning that the process will be closed if the terminal is closed. Closing it does kill the process. Ctrl+c to return to the prompt also kills the process. So it's as if once the process is started in the terminal, nothing can be altered.
I am not much of a mac guy so please forgive me if this is a stupid question.
Anyone have any advice on how to handle this so the process is ALWAYS running?
I am in search for a lightweight, TextEdit-like app that has the handy floating text insert feature. Freeware would be the greatest, but i dont mind paying a modest shareware fee. I have and use Appleworks still, which has the handy feature by Option-Clicking anywhere you want the floating text, but am looking for something a little more future proof.
I downloaded Bean and iText Express, but I could not find that sweet feature in those apps.
I'm on a standard user account and I would really like to install icalbuddy which is a terminal app. When I install apps normally I simply have to provide a admin name and pw, but this doesn't work when it is a terminal app because it requires that the 'su' command be run.
So I thought that I could run terminal as admin through 'su - admin' and then install. But of course the admin account doesn't have access to the user folder where the installer is located. I just can't win.
It was working fine until yesterday, and now when I open it, all I get is a blank screen, and it's stuck at "Login", and I can't use it. What happened, and how can I fix it?

View 8 Replies View RelatedI like using Putty for terminal emulation, which we use at work to connect to UNIX servers. At home on my Mac, when I use terminal, I don't like it compared to Putty.
For example, I like the copy (double click) and paste (right click) functionailty in Putty.
So, is there any terminal app out there similar to Putty?
Say I have downloaded and compiled pngcrush and want to make it so that I can access it from terminal simply by typing pngcrush bla bla bla instead of having to specify the path to it? Unlike say wget, I can't "sudo make install" pngcrush.
View 2 Replies View RelatedDoes anybody know if it is possible to send commands or options to Archive Utility.app via Terminal?
It is possible to invoke Archive Utility.app and pass it the path to a zip file, and it will uncompress it. However, I would like to also pass it a destination path, and see what other options it may have.
