Applications :: Video Clip Is Black When Seen In IPhoto After Import?
Jun 11, 2010
When I import video from my Creative's Vado HD Pocket Video camcorder on a month old MacBook Pro the video files in each event are black. They have no image. When I click on them I can see the video but I would prefer to see an image which makes identifying each video much easier.
Is there anything I can do so that I can see an image?

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I can no longer import P2 footage. I get the stop sign and error: no data.In the import window I can play the clip and everything is fine, but when I add to the clip to the import queue it just times out.
Any thoughts? Is it somehow related to Quicktime being updated by Snow Leopard?

Mac OS X (10.6.1)

I own a Sony Cyber-shot camera, and a 24 inch IMAC computer. I took a short video clip and downloaded it to Iphoto (no problem doing that). I then downloaded the clip to a 4 gpb flash drive, as an mp4 video. My problem is that my friends Microsoft based PC can't play it.

I have a Canon S500 camera and whenever I plug my camera in and import a bunch of photos into IPhoto, the photos show up but I don't see the videos. Am I missing something? I still have them on the camera, but I want them off and stored in Iphoto

I realize that some movie formats on older digital cameras do not coincide with older versions of IPhoto. I have the original Iphoto/IMovie on my PowerBook G4 and neither will recognize the Canon Powershot S50 digital camera on the desktop--yet it shows up on IPhoto. I am still able to import all photos.
But what I am wondering is if there is a way that I can import video to the HD some other way? I cannot find the camera using finder despite having a USB connection. All I would like to do is download the small videos that I have on the camera's disk.

I recently imported a set of 14 photos and 1 video into iphoto. I got them all into the album i wanted except for 1 video. This single video can be imported to any other folder other than the one i want it to be.

I'm importing 720p HD video from my new digicam, a Panasonic DMC-ZS3. After importing the video into iMovie, the speed of replay is way too fast (2-3x normal speed). I think it may have something to do with the fact that I'm downloading 720p and somehow the progressive scan is confusing iMovie: [URL]

After importing HD video (from a Canon Vixia HV40) into iMovie 11 (v 9.04) at 960x540 resolution, you get a bunch of .mov files. Does anyone know why those .mov files, as they come out of the import process, will not import into iTunes? Here are the details. My brother wanted to put a small one onto his iPad. I told him the simplest way (or so I thought) to do it would be to import the .mov file into iTunes (v 10.6.1) and then sync his iPad. There was no need to make a project from the single clip, then share it. However, iTunes will not import any of the .mov files made with the iMovie import. Does anyone know why? This happens on my iMac (core i7) and his (core i5). Of course, if I open the .mov file in QuickTime Player (v 10.1) then export to a .m4v file (export setting "iPad, iPhone & Apple TV"), the new file imports into iTunes just fine. In case iTunes thinks you shouldn't be importing clips from the iMovie events folder, I dragged the clip to the desktop and tried the import, but that did not work either. I guess what this comes down to is given that iMovie, QuickTime Player and iTunes all come from Apple, why can iMovie and QuickTime Player read the file while iTunes cannot? I would think the same code would be in all three products (do the iMovie and QuickTime Player developers refuse to share, while the iTunes developers are lazy?).

It's easy to select part of an AVCHD clip to import but I still can't import a range from a .mov file on my HDD.
Is it impossible or am I just doing it incorrectly?

I am using the 30 day Demo version of Aperture3 (awaiting the arrival of my ordered copy). Apple claims it to be "fully functional for 30 days, and I believe them, so I don't think (but can't rule out) that this is the source of my issue. I have imported my iPhoto Library (approx 20GB), not by reference, but actually copied the photos into the Aperture Library (as evidenced by the fact that it's physical size is approx 32GB). After that I did about a days work setting up faces and places for my many projects before I discovered the following: When I look at the metadata (General Category) for any photo, it shows my project source as being in my iPhoto library; not as I expected in the aperture library. I was hoping 1) to be able to trash the iPhoto library after the import & 2) not lose the day's work I put into places and faces. One more note, iPhoto (as expected) does not see these changes. Any ideas how to change the reference to the aperture library, is it possible that after applying a new serial number(when my paid copy of aperture arrives) that this will rectify itself? One more note; in the preferences (general tab) the library is correctly referenced as the Aperture3 library.

Whenever I import clips into iMovie HD I get a black rectangle on the left side of the clip that only shows up when I import it, the actual file does not have this (as shown in the attachments).

For the past few days, I have been trying to import some photos from my Canon Rebel XT. The symptom is that after all photos are loaded from the camera, iPhoto displays 1 photo remaining and fails to complete. After a while, the camera times out and shuts off. iPhoto will now appear to be done, but in fact if you try to quit, it will refuse saying the import isn't finished. The only way to quit is to force a quit. While this is happening CPU will be 100% with 30% to the system, and 70% to iPhoto. You can leave this for days and it still will not complete.
I have tried importing from the camera directly, and directly from the compact flash with the same results.
I am running OSX 10.4.10 and iPhoto 6.0.6.

I recently discovered Bridge. Always had it, but never used it. I very much like that you can see all the information of a selected photo, and that you can sort photos on for example dimensions. It works faster than iPhoto too. The best thing though, is that you can make your own folder-structures.
That's the biggest disadvantage of iPhoto I think. Now I have hundreds (as a matter of speaking) events, which could be grouped to a a few dozens. For example: "Music" > "Concerts" > "Deep Purple" > "California Jam '74"
I know I can create (Smart) albums in iPhoto, but that merges everything into one. If I use my example again, if I would create an album "Music", there would be "California Jam '74" in it, but also an other concert from Deep Purple. And concerts of other bands. And other things related to music. And all of that merged into one huge 'event'.
Am I right or am I missing something?
But, iPhoto looks fantastic, the slideshows are superior, and those new Places and Faces are awesome. But that absence of a folder structure is killing me. If the events were just folder thumbnails...
I'm thinking, what if I do "don't import photos to iPhoto library", and make my own folder structures? That way I can use Bridge as it supposed to be, and if I want to show (off with) my photos I'll go to iPhoto and spend a minute finding the right event.

I've takes some videos with my digital camera. When I connect it to my Mac, iPhoto opens up and imports them, and I have all the videos in their own event.
When I open up iMovie 08 to edit these clips, they do not show up in the event library under iPhoto videos.

How do you migrate - or even better - sync your iPhoto library from your old mac to your new mac? This should be fairly easy, but as often the case - with a new mac, a new version iLife, and it appears that iPhoto 09 will only import originals from iPhoto 08 - not all the editing i've done. Please can somebody give instructions? I've googled myself blind and carnt find any solution. Probably not possible, but keeping those two iPhoto libraries in sync would be the don - any thoughts on how to come about that given the different versions of iPhoto?

I'm migrating from iPhoto '09 to Aperture 3 and noticed it doesn't import learned faces! I have over 130 learned faces in iPhoto and DO NOT want to have to manually re teach Aperture who everyone is. Why didn't they set it up to migrate the faces library as well?

I read through the information provided by iMovie, and searched around on Google, but I'm not getting anywhere. I have iMovie '08, and have never used it until today. I tried to import some videos (Mp4) that I have on my computer in order to edit them. I imported them, selected the project to import them to, where to save, etc. Pressed import. iMovie said it was importing the video and then uploading thumbs or whatever. After that, nothing. Nothing shows up in iMovie, and I don't know how to access the video clips, or how to make them transfer successfully. Am I doing anything wrong?

I'll be doing my first project in iMovie this weekend; I'm borrowing a Sony Handycam to film a school play. Because my Macbook doesn't have a firewire port, I'm planning to use my friend's iMac to import the footage onto my external hard drive (ie select the hard drive from the pop-up menu on the import sheet as recommended here. Once the footage is on my external hard drive will I have to do the editing on the iMac, or can I edit it in my Macbook? The 2nd option is preferable as I can then do the editing at home instead of at my friend's place. If that's possible, how do I import it into the macbook? And also, my friend's iMac has iMovie '08, I have '09 - does that matter?

I have an iMac desktop computer, Intel based, with Snow Leopard running on it. When I am running iPhoto the small photos appear in the right pane as they should. However, when I double click on one of the photos to enlarge it, many of them will show a black screen with a white circle and a black exclamation point in the white circle. When I click it again, it returns to the smaller size and is visible. If I use the slider, the pictures will get bigger but when I double click on them the black screen with the exclamation point appears. Again, when I click the black screen, the smaller picture re-appears. This phenomenon does not happen on all of the pictures, just some. Also, the photos that this occurs on are not copies of the originals. When I highlite the photo to edit it and click on edit the screen also goes black. Does anyone have a clue as to what is causing this and how I might fix it?
