Applications :: Large Files Slow In IWork

Dec 16, 2009

I'm working with a numbers document that's just over 3000 rows and 11 columns. Searching, and certain functions are quite slow - not impossible, but frustrating. It's been years since I worked with Excel on a PC, but it was never this sluggish... Using this file, I did a mail merge with a Pages document. The merge took over an hour (this too seems slow, but since I only do it once, whatever). The resulting file is 1.1MB and just over 3000 pages. It was nearly impossible to scroll/review anything in the document. After closing it, Pages crashes upon trying to reopen the document. I got it opened on another MBP, but it's impossibly slow over there too.

It's looking like iWork is not able to handle large projects. I'm posting here in hopes that there's some magical fix that will make it work like Office (did I just say that?) The system is 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo MBP, 3GB RAM, Snow Leopard, all updated and permissions repaired this morning.

MacBook Air :: Slow To Copy Large Files To SSD Drive

Apr 2, 2008

I've had my Air for a couple of months now and very happy with it. However I've noticed if I copy a large about of data to it, lets say around 2gb from a USB or network drive it grinds to a halt. It would start off saying 10 minutes to copy, then get to about 800mb and slow down to about 24 hours to copy.

Applications :: Mail Crash With Large Attachment - Finder Super Slow

Apr 22, 2007

I'm happily using my new 24" iMac, but I've run across a little problem this evening. I was trying to send a 225mb file as a mail attachment through my Gmail account using Mail. When I go to send the file, Mail crashes and disappears. This happened a couple times, so I logged directly into Gmail and sent the file through the web browser. Now the system is hung up 'sending' in the Gmail browser, and Finder has become very sluggish (slow response to clicks, errors printing, etc). Can the iMac and/or Mail handle sending files of this size?

Applications :: Sending Large Files Between Two Macs Over The Net?

Apr 27, 2010

Me and my sister are looking for a way to swap files, between our Macs, over the Net.

I have no idea about FTP or Transmit and I'm not sure what our best method or app should be?

We're both running OS X- I'm on Snow Leopard, she's on Leopard*

My sister has two boys and a little girl. Shortly after buying our respective Macs, I bought an HD camcorder and my sister bought a very good DSLR. So I have lots of HD videos made with iMovie for her and she has tons of pics to send me. We both have our own back-ups of course but neither is proof against fire or theft to be honest. I know we could swap them on a large USB stick or a portable drive but we don't always see each other and she's very busy.

Applications :: Aperture Handling Large Amount Of Files

Sep 1, 2010

If in aperture i have a folder/album with say 60GB of pics in (from one event, RAW pics). Then i have say 10 labelled with 5*.

If i load the folder only showing 5* pics, will it load immanently, or will it have to scan through all 60GB to find the *ed pictures.

At the moment, using Adobe Bridge on my old PC, it takes ages (hence why i separate them into 2 folders once sorted). I was hoping that aperture would just load the *ed ones if you tell it to and not have to look through all the files each time. (Bridge loads them, then sorts them).

Also, about stacks. i take lots of time lapses (frame by frame) so i end up with lots of similar pictures. If i had a stack with a few thousand pictures in, would aperture handle this well? If i had an album with 3 stacks in, each with 5000 pics in, will the album load quick, and only when i open a stack it take longer to load.

Applications :: Tutorial / How To Convert Pages IWork Files To DOC (or Whatever You Like)

Oct 8, 2009

I haven't found anything on internet about this, so how I had founded a solution, I want to share it.

One day, my Macbook White brokes and I needed to recover a curriculum, and it was in a .pages file. So I had to recover it in Windows, because I have no one who could convert it in Pages.

1 Rename .pages file and add .zip extension. That makes the content of the package visible with any zip utility, (in my case WinRAR).

2 Uncompress the package.

3 Go to QuickLook and search for Preview.pdf. That's a pdf file that contains a low quality version of your pages document. Almost all of the content is in index.xml, but It's very difficult to extract manually the information.

4 Convert the pdf file to doc with any pdf converter. For example: [URL]

5 If your document has attachments (like images), you can replace low quality images of Doc document with the original images located in the uncompressed package.

That's it, of course this works for me with a simple Pages document with an image, that doesn't mean that works for every .pages file.

Applications :: MS Word, Exel, IWork Pages, IWork Numbers Not Saving/Hanging On Save

Nov 1, 2009

I have a:
Macbook Pro running Mac OSX 10.5.8
(Office 2008) Word, Exel, PowerPoint, (Iwork 2009) Numbers, Pages will not save:.
I tossed the Word Plist file and that did not work.
I have run Virus Barrier X5 and found a about 10 files with Virus 'W97M/Pinky.B' "Quarantened" them and still have the problem.

The problem started -- I think -- when I was doing heavy editing between Numbers and Word. But I don't think it is related (though who knows at this point). Without these programs I'm rendered pretty useless.

Applications :: Install IWork After Trial With IWork Box?

Feb 8, 2009

So I used the iWork '09 trial for 30 days now and now I have a box version and I want to simply use the buy function from the trial to upgrade to the full non-trial version. It has: Quote: If you've purchased an iWork '09 box, you'll find the serial number on the Installing iWork '09 booklet. There's only one problem, there's no serial number on the booklet! How do I install using the buy function or do I have to install the full iWork suite again on my computer? Seems kind of silly. If so, do I need to then uninstalling one of my versions of iWork '09? And if so, which one? How do I tell the difference at that point?

Some of you might be wondering and about to comment on the fact that I should have just bought the online version and saved the hassle. The reason why I bought the box is because I could get it for $39 at my girlfriend's campus computer store.

OS X :: Large PDFs Slow In Preview

Jun 7, 2009

I seem to be having trouble with large PDFs in OSX. Everytime I open such a PDF file, either under Preview or Adobe Reader, ATSserver and mdworker begin taking up 60-80% of the CPU. Can someone please shed some light into what is happening? I understand that OSX is indexing the PDF file, but it indexes it everytime the PDF is launched, instead of just once. For example, I open Textbook.pdf (50mb) in Preview. As soon as it opens, the above two processes take up 60-80% of the cpu and seemingly dont stop. I wait, and wait, and eventually they do. So then I search for a word in the PDF file, and those processes start up again, searching becomes painfully slow as each instance of the term is searched for (I thought it indexed it). Once the searching for one term is done, and I decide to search for another, the two processes come on again, and everything slows down again. If I close Textbook.pdf and open it again either immediately or at a later date, the same things happen again.

Isnt it supposed to index once, and then be indexed forever? Instead of indexing everytime the pdf is launched, and everytime a term is searched for? This has made large PDFs almost unusable in OSX, unlike in Windows which doesnt seem to have this problem. Is there a solution?

Mac Mini :: IWork Or Office 2008 Little Slow?

Nov 8, 2009

For some reason, I've noticed it's a bit slower than my MBP in opening and saving documents from iwork and office 2008. I made a keynote presentation that came out to 25MB and I tried to export it as a powerpoint file to email to my classmates. It took a long time and a couple times, it had the colorful swirl circling for the longest time. I left my computer for a while and finally it was done. With my MBP, this procedure is done within seconds or at most, a minute. Anyone having this issue? If its an issue, should i fresh reinstall my OS and reinstall the latest backup? The backup i'm using now when i first got this mac mini is from my MBP.

OS X :: Move Large Files On The Web?

Aug 18, 2008

I do a lot of work that involves advertising, photography, video editing, DVD authoring, photoshop and illustrator files. The illustrator vector files are fairly compressed but the photoshop raster files can be extremely large. Sometimes, I have someone wishing to send me a large portfolio folder, or I find I may want to send a big file to someone else. As an example, I recently had an artist send me a hi-res portfolio of his book covers to be made into a promotional DVD for comic-con. One of the CD's he sent me had the wrong pics on it, so I had to wait for the correct pics to be sent, which delayed the project several days. I can compress a single file for emailing, but can not drop the resolution as a way to minimize folder size if the file is going to be printed. I work predominantly on a mac, but many of my customers use windows based operating systems.

What is the best method for sending and receiving large digital files from a variety of customers? If I get an FTP site, can I keep one client from accessing someone else's folders? I noticed that Skype allows for file transfer... is VOIP practical for sending large files? This month's macworld made mention of a bit torrent program for such a chore. What about using a bit torrent program such as Transmission for creating a bit torrent folder for moving large files to a single customer? Are paid services available? Is a paid service the best choice? I am looking for a method that I can both send and receive these large files. It should be easy enough for a less than tech savvy customer to send me files after I give them a minimal explanation of how to do it. Preferably, it would involve no cost to a customer, and no need for them to install software.

OS X :: Transferring Large Files To PC

Sep 30, 2010

I needed to make 40 dvd's. My burner is burnt out on my mac. I've created all the dvd's as iso files with iDVD. Now I need to transfer them to my PC that has a functioning burner. SOOOO... transferring 81.5 GB of data over a network will take days. Having said that, I'm using an unsecured network that drops out frequently. (I just moved in, it'll be weeks until the phone company can hook up my internet... we just had a hurricane and they're busy with repairs). Next idea, use a flash drive. Most of the iso files are bigger than 4Gb - so FAT32 is out. What's left?

which sounds promising, but once the files are split, how do I join them back together on my PC? Oh, and did I mention that this job is for a client and they're waiting on it. STRESS!!
