I have a macbook air. My problem is that it has a total of 120 gb and 50 gb are taken by the section of other. However i dont recall downloading something that has that size. and none of my other documents add up to 50 gb.

Any help and advice would be greatly appreciated. Background I'm going back to university next year to study animation so I've just ordered a Macbook Pro and I will be selling my '08 Mac Pro fairly soon to pay for it. I'm doing this because I need to be able to work from where ever. I know if I need to do any massive renders University has equipment I can use. What I am looking for Animation obviously takes up a lot of Hard Disk space so I need someway of storing, accessing and backing up all of my work that wont fit on my laptop. This is a basic summary of what I need it to do.
- Store old projects (that can be 100's of Gb)
- Easily backup MBP harddrive (500Gb) & old projects on other drives.
- Work directly on it on large animation projects.
- Be expandable in the future.
- Fairly easy to set up and use.
- Cheap is good but I'm happy to pay more if the benefits are obvious.
- Any extra bonuses are good (like working wirelessly, etc) but only if it's not loads extra.
I don't know if all these things are possible but be very grateful for any help regardless.
way to store 10 to 20 TBs of data. It needs to be readily accessible, but it doesn't need to be extremely fast. A normal usb 2 connection is fine, as well as firewire or esata or ethernet. I do transfer large files, but there is no urgent need for them to be lightening quick.As it stands now, I have several external drives just hooked up to my computer. I'd like to avoid continuing that method. I want only one volume to show up on my mac. It doesn't have to be through raid striping, though I don't really know of another way; maybe just a container volume that has all the drives in it?
View 13 Replies View RelatedI have this MBP 13'' Mac OS X 10.7.5 running a 2.4GHz i5, 4GB RAMs and 500GB storage.The problem started yesterday when I was typing on Word and I copy pasted something from the net (chrome browser) then it froze.I waited for around 5minutes and still frozen with the spinning wheel, then I decided to turn it off by pressing power for 10 seconds restarted my
MBP then now it running so slow on start-up and apps are very slow to open like around 5 minutes. Every action that I try to do like clicking on the apple in the upper left it freezes showing a spinning wheel and it will take time to show the drop down options. I checked disk utility and it said that HD is ok, done verify/permission verify and repair.
I checked the activity monitor noting the ram/CPU usage and its normal it even tells that 2GB of ram is not use.It shows not responding in the activity monitor if you open an app for around 5mins then it opens or it will crash.I already done the 2 kinds of reset and did not work.BUT it opens normally in Safe mode.

I have a macbook air 128g and am running out of storage space. I am wondering if I can use icloud as a primary storage for my media files (Photos, music, video, etc). Then I could potentially remove from hard drive to free up space. I am concerned if this is possible and what the cons would be. I am thinking that Itunes library and photos would not be as quickly accesible as it would be using the hard drive.

I've had my Air for a couple of months now and very happy with it. However I've noticed if I copy a large about of data to it, lets say around 2gb from a USB or network drive it grinds to a halt. It would start off saying 10 minutes to copy, then get to about 800mb and slow down to about 24 hours to copy.

I check my HD and it was almost full to capacity, it shows I had 2.2 TB of photos and 1.5 TB of audio.
I don't know if this photos and music kept adding each time I sync my iphone or each time i log on to Facebook.
Anyway I would like to FREE UP THE SPACE but how, and would I need to have 3plus TB of external DH to do this, or what??????

I edit using Lightroom and Photoshop and I'm having an issue while editing. After editing around 8-10 photos in Photoshop the computer starts running unbelievably slow. After each 8-10 photos I have to close down everything and reboot. Even the reboot process is super slow as I have to force quit each application usually 1-2 times to get it to close. Is this normal? I have a 2011 17" with 2.2 GHZ i7 with 8GB ram. Is there any setting that I can change or be aware of.

I have a white 2.0 Ghz MacBook running Tiger 10.4.8 with the latest firmware updates, and 2 GB RAM. I also have an external IDE drive partitioned as FAT32, sitting in a relatively-no-name enclosure via firewire, daisy-chained through my Presonus Firebox external audio unit (I know, not ideal for recording). The MacBook's HDD also has an NTFS partition with XP residing there. Now, it all worked great for a month now, but this week I started having a strange issue. First I noticed that the fans started kicking in even though I wasn't doing anything special. I fired the Activity Monitor up, and indeed, the CPU load was at 140%. So I looked among the processes, and one named "Mass Storage" seemed to be frozen. The obvious, but perhaps a little dangerous, thing to do was to quit it, so I did.
The CPU load returned to normal, and I was still able to access the external drive just fine. So, now, whenever I connect the firewire drive, the mass storage process hangs. I quit it, and everything goes back to normal from there. The question is.. Why does it freeze, and also, what is the whole <i>point</i> of the 'mass storage' process if quitting it doesn't affect anything? When I plug the drive in, iPhoto launches automatically, and by the files that mass storage opens, I'm going to try and track down what's causing it to hang. The last file it opens on the list is /dev/urandom. Also, now that I think about it, FAT32 probably isn't the best filesystem out there. I do need the drive to be compatible with both OS X and Windows though. I suppose I could try HFS+ under OS X, and then using Mac Drive under Win to access the disk.
i downloaded about 3.1 gbs of music onto it and it was working ok, well now that i removed everything off the internal memory its running so slow!! my safari got updated and everytime i go to a website is see that blue bar lag to the other end ,i bought a 1tb external HD to keep memory free in the macbook to keep it from slowing down but its still slow .i am really considering selling this and getting an hp computer if i cant fix this, cause i paid nearly 2k dollars for the laptop

View 5 Replies View RelatedI seem to be having trouble with large PDFs in OSX. Everytime I open such a PDF file, either under Preview or Adobe Reader, ATSserver and mdworker begin taking up 60-80% of the CPU. Can someone please shed some light into what is happening? I understand that OSX is indexing the PDF file, but it indexes it everytime the PDF is launched, instead of just once. For example, I open Textbook.pdf (50mb) in Preview. As soon as it opens, the above two processes take up 60-80% of the cpu and seemingly dont stop. I wait, and wait, and eventually they do. So then I search for a word in the PDF file, and those processes start up again, searching becomes painfully slow as each instance of the term is searched for (I thought it indexed it). Once the searching for one term is done, and I decide to search for another, the two processes come on again, and everything slows down again. If I close Textbook.pdf and open it again either immediately or at a later date, the same things happen again.
Isnt it supposed to index once, and then be indexed forever? Instead of indexing everytime the pdf is launched, and everytime a term is searched for? This has made large PDFs almost unusable in OSX, unlike in Windows which doesnt seem to have this problem. Is there a solution?

my 4 year old IMac 2.4ghz intel core 2 duo with 2gb running 10.7.3 has been running really slow since I installed photoshop CS4 and upgraded to lion ( I have 137gb of free space on hard drive) I mean it wont quit out of photoshop I always have to do a force quit and most applications run really slow. Do I need a new computer , what should I go for to have a smooth running mac?Was thinking of a new IMac 27-inch: 2.7GHz with 4gb memory.

I'm working with a numbers document that's just over 3000 rows and 11 columns. Searching, and certain functions are quite slow - not impossible, but frustrating. It's been years since I worked with Excel on a PC, but it was never this sluggish... Using this file, I did a mail merge with a Pages document. The merge took over an hour (this too seems slow, but since I only do it once, whatever). The resulting file is 1.1MB and just over 3000 pages. It was nearly impossible to scroll/review anything in the document. After closing it, Pages crashes upon trying to reopen the document. I got it opened on another MBP, but it's impossibly slow over there too.
It's looking like iWork is not able to handle large projects. I'm posting here in hopes that there's some magical fix that will make it work like Office (did I just say that?) The system is 2.16GHz Core 2 Duo MBP, 3GB RAM, Snow Leopard, all updated and permissions repaired this morning.
Has anyone tried using some of the NAS storage solutions out there as your Time Machine back up? If so, how well does it work? Reason I ask is because I'm thinking of getting one but I don't want to run into the same problem I had with mounting when I tried using an external HDD connected to my home server. I know it's not the same but I'm just asking to be safe.

They tend to be slow in saving, requiring a few seconds to save rather than doing so as quickly as smaller word documents. Is there anything I can do to speed up my interactions with these larger documents?

View 24 Replies View RelatedI'm happily using my new 24" iMac, but I've run across a little problem this evening. I was trying to send a 225mb file as a mail attachment through my Gmail account using Mail. When I go to send the file, Mail crashes and disappears. This happened a couple times, so I logged directly into Gmail and sent the file through the web browser. Now the system is hung up 'sending' in the Gmail browser, and Finder has become very sluggish (slow response to clicks, errors printing, etc). Can the iMac and/or Mail handle sending files of this size?

I'm a graphic designer running CS5 Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign etc working on large (500mb) PSD files with lots of layers.Iv'e recently found my beach ball spinning a lot and program switching very sluggish, safari again very slow, finder much spinning ball. When streaming music as well spotify, soundcloud finding that when i'm doing anything processor intensive in Photoshop I'm hearing pops and very small sound drops.

I bought a brand new MacBook Pro in December 2011.
I have so far had no problems, using it everyday for work. I do not use a lot of programs or take up a lot of memory. I currently have 413GB free of 499GB and have hardly any apps running. My MacBook pro is now running extremely slow. It takes ages to load a web page, to open Word and even to start a new line in an email!
I am familiar with Windows and PC's but when it comes to Mac's, this is my first, and I am unsure of why this could be happening!
