Applications :: Garageband & MIDI Controller - Software Instruments With The Keyboard?
Mar 15, 2009
I have only just got a MIDI keyboard conencted via USB to control the software instruments on Garageband. The only problem I am finding is if I say, sample some drums, I can only play them back by manually placing them in the chord orchestrator.
What I basically need/want is to control the track (the part on the left) by a single press on the keyboard; so if I wanted 2 kicks to sound, I'd press the key twice. But at the moment it's just not registering at all, and only allows me to play the stock software instruments with the keyboard
I switched to a mac almost a year ago. About a month after purchasing my macbook, i installed this application, and then i didn't want it anymore. The app didn't uninstall properly and it crippled the mac (in my rookie mind). I then made another stupid decision of reinstalling leopard on the macbook. Everything installed correctly except garageband 08. It wasn't there, since i never used it, i just forgot about it later until i got a copy from a friend who recently purchased an imac. I just copied the app onto a flash drive and put it on the macbook. The app worked, except there wasn't any instruments, loops, etc. Now i want to use grageband and i was wondering how i can get those back. Are they on one of the install dvd's? Do i copy folders from my friends mac to mine?, if so which ones and where?
Does anyone know if the Software Instruments that GarageBand provides will be compatible with MIDI Wind Controllers such as the Yamaha WX5? These instruments use continuous breath control as opposed to the velocity/aftertouch and envelopes more appropriate to keyboardand percussion instruments.
I was playing around with Garage Band 08 and I started to download some new instruments. The complete file was about 1 GB so I canceled the download but now Apple Update is offering me to install the "update" all the time. How can I get rid of this?
Have MacBook Pro, running on OSx and on 10.4.8. Using Sibelius 3. I am the only music teacher in my school so do not have the luxury of an accompaninist. I thought all my problems were solved when I discovered the wonderful real sounding steinway piano in garageband. So I input my piano score note for note into sibelius, then save it as a midi. Before I do it I input all my tempo edits such as rits, pauses and accelerandos and so on. I then drag my new midi into garageband and yes it plays beautifully only problem is it doesn't play any of my tempo instructions. Yes I have checked that they're playing back correctly in sibelius before I saved as midi. Pleas help me as I have practical exams for my students coming up very quickly and it is causing me severe stress
I have a usb midi controller (vestax spin to be exact) and my mbp doesn't seem to recognize it but I know it's on because of the power light, what can I do? Also sometimes I get a message to power down my computer or restart.
I know that GB '08 was JUST released so I don't know if anyone would have a definitive answer. I've already checked on Apple's support pages to no avail, so here it goes. Does GB '08 finally have support for MIDI out? Previous versions did not have this feature, so I'm hoping that this version will. one?. I've used midiO in the past with my version of GB (the iLife 05' version) but it's always locked up GB for me, so I'm hoping for a native feature this time around.
yesterday i bought MIDI keyboards it's M-AUDIO Keystation Mini 32
The problem is that when i connect it to right USB port it works flawlessly, but when i connect it to my left USB port - my macbook pro recognizes the device but it doesn't send any midi data - to put it in other way: it is not working.
I have checked, everything is working fine In the LEFT usb port( wireless mouse, external HDD, Flash drives, Iphone) except my MIDI Keyboard.
Info: MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)
I'm a complete novice to Garageband, but have been having fun with it so far. One thing I would really like to be able to do, but can't figure out (and not for lack of hours spent trying) is assign tracks in GB to the sliders and twist knobs on my Edirol PCR-M30. I've read the manual for the PCR-M30, but for a casual user like me, I just don't understand what it means by "bulk reception" and "midi i/f off" and the like. Can anyone help me to understand in simple terms how I can assign volume control to the sliders and panning to the twist knobs on a per track basis in GB for my PCR-M30?
I have a cheap little usb keyboard that I use in Garageband. It sounds great but I have a problem doing drums with it. It seems that the bass drum is lower than my keyboard allows me to go. Is there any way of changing the octaves that a keyboard controls so I could lower down to the bass drum? I found the bass using the software keyboard but it is just a few notes lower than my keyboard goes.
I have a yamaha mm6 keyboard which I have connected to my mac using midi, in logic express it shows that it is detecting the notes, yet nothing plays through the laptop speakers! I am selecting external midi when I make a new track btw. If I record something it even shows the notes as I play, but no sound. I want to use the instruments on the keyboard but don't know how to do this. Also I have a boss dr 670 drum machine and I can't get that to work at all in logic, the keyboard worked if I used a software instrument in logic. I want to also use the drums from the machine and things like it's quantizing, but I can't get logic to pick it up at all.
I just recently purchased Logic Express 9. I am having difficulty getting the application to play my external MIDI gear.
I selected the appropriate track type (external MIDI), then selected from the library a MIDI device and channel. Logic sees the MIDI devices that I configured through Apple's "Audio/MIDI interface app".
This is my setup
Logic Express is installed on an iMac with 4GB Memory running the latest version of MAC OS 10.x Snow Leopard.
Im using a Motu Fastlane 2x2 MIDI Interface with Motus latest driver installed.
Connected to the Port A input of the Fastlane is a Yamaha P-80 that I am using as a MIDI controller and whose sounds I also want to use. Connected to the two output MIDI ports of the Fastlane are the Yamaha P-80 and a Roland JD990 MIDI synth module. In are correctly routed to outs and vice versa.
The Fastlane is recognized by the MAC computer. Also Logic Express sees the instruments I configured within the Apples Audio/MIDI interface app.
I am able to use the P-80 keyboard to record MIDI data to Logic Express for either an internal instrument track or an external MIDI track. The soft synths in the internal tracks play with no problem. For an External MIDI track, I see the data in the Piano roll view. When I play the track, no sound comes out but I see the output MIDI data indicated at the bottom of the arrangement window. Also my external MIDI gears audio outs are patched into an audio mixer connected to powered monitor speakers. So I would definitely hear the devices if they were receiving MIDI information. The MIDI indicator lights on the external devices are not flashing when Logic is playing back the data.
So obviously I have an output communication issue. Either something is not set properly within the Logic software or the Audio/MIDI interface app.
When I open up the Audio/MIDI interface app and click on test. I am able to here the tone when I press the keyboard which indicates the Motu Interface is receiving data from the keyboard. However, when I click on the ports output arrow that is supposed to send a tone to the MIDI instruments, I hear nothing which is consistent with what is happening within Logic.
I know the Motu Fastlane works because I used it for a long time in a Windows based system. I have checked each wire and they check out as well. I have checked and double checked each connection and they are set properly. At this point, I am not sure what to do to correct this problem.
I got iLife 11. I would like to play on a keyboard like the guy did in the Apple Keynote two days ago. I got a new 13inch MacBook Pro. I'm looking at these instruments:

Would I need anything else if I buy one of these? Can I just connect it via USB to my laptop and start playing?
I am thinking of an ultra portable ring consisting of the Macbook Air and Reason 4.0 and a USB MIDI keyboard. Will this set up work? I know that the speakers are mono but the headphone out should be good to go right?
I'm trying to connect my Roland keyboard to my computer via USB to use in Garageband and another music program. Is it possible to do this without using an interface in the audio setup or ? I tried just connecting it via USB with the keyboard driver installed, but my computer doesn't see it.
I have a Casio CTK 720 Kayboard with Midi USB connection. It worked fine until a few days ago and then stopped being recognized. I have redownloaded the Midi Driver, still doesn't show up. It shows up in Audio but doesn't activate keys when in Garageband.
I've tried but it is recognized as a keyboard and ask me to type the passcode and then the enter key. How could I type the passconde on the controller? Here's a screen shot of the popup window when I press the PS button on the controller:I'm using a MacBook Pro early 2011 with Lion version 10.7.3.The Bluetooth chipset is Broadcom (version 4.0.3f12).Â
i need to assign a background sound in my page, and i have used garageband to create a very simple tune, and export it to the iTune.IS there anyway i can convert from m4a to MP3, or MIDI file?
having recorded my Piano playing in Garageband with my oh-so-sexy Apogee Duet, I'm more than please with the quality of the Audio I'm getting. However, I'm wondering if there's a way for me to capture the MIDI at the same time.I'm using a Roland RD700x series Professional stage piano which has a lovely sounding sample in it which is good from an Audio perspective, however I also want to record the MIDI events while I'm capturing the Audio.
I've had a Roland XP-30 and just got the M-Audio MidiSport Uno and downloaded the latest drivers from the site. The device is recognized on my Powerbook, but I can't get any audio playback from the keyboard. I've tried messing with settings on the keyboard, but still can't get it to play or record on my Powerbook. In GarageBand, Reason, and Audio MIDI Setup the device is properly recognized.
Anyone else caught this? If I try to open a MIDI file in QTX, it tells me I need to launch QT7. Why would Apple release a half-complete version of QTX?
I use the midi learn feature in logic pro, and it works well. But then I turn off the computer and midi controller and when I open logic again, it does not remember what it had learned.
dmx lighting control using a Mac? I'm interested in software, and of course some sort of interface (USB?) that will produce DMX signals. A search on the web reveals several 'older' Mac programs -
Not sure why this is happening, but I hear a distortion on the highs and certain instruments when I download certain CD's onto my iTunes library and then listen to them on either my Bose, headphones, or car stereo. I verified my setting on my iPod, and even leveled the Sound Check option, but nothing works. Does this mean that it's better to purchased the songs directly from iTunes so it can sound better or is there another option I haven't figured out. Also, are all the songs on iTunes remastered and sound levels automatically adjusted already?
I am working with logic express 8 and would like to assign software instruments such as clarinet and celli to the midi-files of my keyboard. Yesterday I couldn't find woodwind instruments in the library of logic so I started to download mainstage 2 - which seemed to extend the library of logic. But unfortunately some software instruments (for example cello...) disappeared and instead of extending my library in logic mainstage made it smaller.
Info: Logic Studio, Mac OS X (10.7.3), I am working with Logic Express 8
