Applications :: Firefox And 100 Cpu Usage - How To Manage To Smooth

Sep 19, 2010

...Firefox on my mac pushes my cpu to 100% usage!

I use to have about 20 tabs open all the time, but this is not the case in c2d cpu, I think.

So, when so many things (osx, addons versions, ff versions) changes, I really do not know what else to search for, in order to make my firefox have a normal cpu usage.

Applications :: Firefox 4.0 B7 - Increased RAM Usage...

Nov 11, 2010

So the latest beta is apparently 64-bit to begin with. I've also noticed that it uses more RAM than the previous (beta) versions, which is quite disappointing. It now uses up even more RAM than Safari!! Has anyone else noticed that?

I also don't like the the new "page loading" status because it doesn't tell much - seems like a copy of Chrome's too. I preferred how it was in the previous beta version.

OS X :: Safari Versus Firefox RAM Usage

Feb 18, 2006

I'm sure you've all read about the Firefox memory leak brouhaha. Firefox 1.5+ is supposed to suck down memory like there is no tomorrow.

Someone made this challenge:

[URL]

"If you keep opening tabs in Firefox say, more than 10 or 15 the browser starts to slow to a crawl. See how many tabs you can open, but participate at your own risk! Oh, and uh... be sure to save all of your work first."

Well I ran that test. I opened 33 tabs in FF 1.5.01 on my iBook (see sig). FF doesn't bat an eyelash, no slowdown whatsoever.

MacBook :: CPU Usage Very High Just Using Safari/firefox?

Mar 6, 2009

The HD crashed about 2 years ago, and since the replacement (TOSHIBA MK6034GSX 60GB) the CPU will go very hot 80+C and the fan going to 6200rpm if visiting some internet pages. Normally a problem if (when) the kids are playing free online games or visiting youtube or similar. Made a screenshot, notice CPU usage around 112%, smartfan showing 70C and 6200rpm. I have taken the mac physically apart and cleaned the cooling duct and applyed new thermal paste. Didn't help. It drives me crazy, I hate noisy computers.

OS X :: How To Manage Open Applications

May 11, 2008

I just got my wife a MacBook Pro and we are already confused. [YES, WE JUST SWITCHED]

Here is the first issue. It seems that the concept of closing and switching between applications is totally different on a Mac (willing to learn, just totally confused).

I understand from reading a few websites that the only way to actually close an application is to go to file->Close or Command Q... Is this true? I'm OK with keyboard shortcuts but my wife hates them and the extra steps of having to go up top, drop down a menu, and select quit seems kind of silly. What is the difference between the X and the - up top then anyways?

Also (and more importantly), we keep losing windows. For example, we had the Mail application open and started a new message which opened a new window. She then went back to Safari to get a contact. When she went back to the Mail application we landed back on the inbox and the new message window was nowhere to be found. We had to close each window one by one until we found the new message window hiding behind them. There has to be a better way then that .... right?

insight you guys can give me would be great. I'm excited to learn the ways of the Mac and there are a lot of things I like... but sometimes it seems like things are more difficult than they need to be just to be different than a PC (like the X not closing the app).

Applications :: Sorting Out ITunes Library - Manage Files?

Dec 28, 2010

Over the years, I have amassed GBs worth of music, spread over many different iTunes libraries, as a result of having desktops, laptops, replacement machines etc. When I first started my collection, I stupidly "let iTunes manage my library" which has resulted in all my tracks being put into thousands of different folders because iTunes likes to create a separate folder for each artist. I was wondering if there was any way of exporting all my music in the iTunes database to a new location, organized by album. eg. A State of Trance 2010 Yearmix being exported to a folder called that, not each of the 80 tracks going into a separate artist folder.

If this can be done, I'm hoping to consolidate my music collection into one library, once and for all! It's probably worth noting that I'm now on Windows, but I thought I would ask here as iTunes is an Apple product. I have access to a Mac should I need to do anything "Mac-specific" to make this happen. Tune up looks like a promising piece of software. However, it only seems to clean up the music files themselves, not their organization within my music folder. Does anyone have any experience with it? Sorted! I'm sure there are loads of people out there that would like me reorganize the file structure of their music after iTunes obliterates it...so here's what I did.

1) Downloaded Songbird. What a great application! It has addons!
2) Went into the applications options. (Tools >> Options)
3) Selected the 'Manage Files' tab.
4) Ticked the box to 'Allow Songbird to manage files'. In the 'Structure Folders' section underneath I changed it to 'Album/Song Files'.
5) Clicked OK at the bottom to save changes and Songbird then wizzed through my collection and put all my music into Album folders!
6) Uninstall iTunes.

I saw some videos that you can select different model amps and effects to use live and for recording.

What would be the ideal device to get so I could plug my guitar in? Is there a pedal board I could use to program and change effects in MainStage?

Applications :: RAM Usage 1.25gb High - Is This Normal

Jun 11, 2010

I was checking the activity monitor and looking at the RAM and reading Apple's doc and the Activity Monitor RAM section.

At this moment, all I have is Firefox, Activity Monitor open and that's it, obviously there's system stuff going on as well. I took a pic and attached it.

Though is USED 1.25GB high, as it sounds real high to me. Is it too high, if so how can I lower it?

The Mac works fine.

I've been thinking to increase the RAM recently, and purchasing an extra 4 or 8 GBs

I have Intego's Virus Barrier too, any need for this?

Applications :: Applescript To Reset Network Usage In IStat Pro

Jan 14, 2009

Is it possible to reset the total bandwidth used for downloads and uploads in iStat pro via an applescript?

I use it to monitor my internet usage since they cap it at my school to a couple gigabytes a day. Since I went over once and was given a warning, my second offense would be no internets from anywhere from a week to a year.

I would use the application Lingon to automatically run the applescript every day at midnight.

Right now the only way to reset the counter is to restart my computer which is bothersome and time consuming

If anyone could point me in the right direction as to the file it uses to store network usage info I could probably figure out how to write the applescript myself.

Applications :: Genius Feature In ITunes - Exact Usage?

Mar 20, 2010

I've never even turned on the genius feature in iTunes, because I was put off by the link to the store. I have no intention whatsoever of buying anything from the iTunes store, though I do have an account cause I had to buy something else online. Here's my strong suspicion about Genius - that it's really there just to sell you crappy tracks from iTunes. And I have no use for that noise.

But, I like to keep an open mind. What if I'm wrong, and what if it's actually a cool feature? I remember not being sure about the shuffle function, since I like to listen to albums, so for the longest time I didn't use it. But one day I gave it a go, and what do you know. I liked it, for the most part! Here's one additional complication - I got like 50,000 songs in my library and I listen to all kinds of genres. Tell me about Genius - how do you use it?

MacBook Pro :: How To Make It Run Smooth And Fast

Nov 20, 2010

Macbook Pro (Early 2010) running 10.6.5 w/ 2.56GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500 GB HD w/ 290GB free space.

There have been times when I'm just running iTunes and the wheel of death will come on, or i'm on Chrome or FF w/ 2 other programs running and will get the wheel again and will get locked for about 1-2min. Before I hadn't had too many problems on a different MBP with lower specs, this one is higher yet is slow. I don't understand what the problem is because I also monitor my CPU and when it locks up the CPU remain at normal. Also, flash has always been lagging on here but will freeze for 5-10sec while audio keeps playing. I possibly think it's the Hard Drive which is a WD Blue Scorpio w/ 5400 RPM.

OS X :: Mouse Tracking Response Not Smooth?

Dec 6, 2009

Just bought my first mac today. It's a 2.8Ghz macbook pro 15"

This is the "problem" I'm having:

I connected an external mouse (logitech) to my computer, and went into system preferences and set tracking speed to max. The response I get from the mouse is still a bit slow for my liking in Mac OS X.

Also the really annoying bit is that when I move my external mouse slowly, the tracking is extremely slow.

When I boot into windows 7 (via bootcamp), the tracking is just perfect.

I guess external mouse tracking in Mac OS X is not "windows like"?? Is there a way to fix this?
