Applications :: EMC Retrospect For Mac Versus Time Machine

Dec 15, 2009

I just bought an Iomega ego 500gb mac edition external hard drive. It comes with a protection suite which includes EMC retrospect express and Iomega quikprotect. They don't sound like they will do anything different than what time machine already does, so I'm wondering if I should install them or not? I don't want a bunch of software competing for the same job and working in the background.

Mac Pro :: Time Machine Versus Mirrored Raid

Having spent that much on a computer, added to the fact that I'm now starting to get more music/audio freelance work, means I'm keen to get a decent backup system going. I aim eventually to get a 1tb external drive and use time machine to backup my samples drive, but what do you reckon would be the best option for the system drive?

OS X :: Time Machine Versus Manual Restore

Aug 24, 2009

Earlier I was thinking I would manually backup all of my data, do a "clean" install of Snow Leopard, and reinstall all of my apps.

I'm now wondering if just doing a clean install and restoring from Time Machine is the way to go. I want to clear out as much "junk" as I can... will this do the trick?

Also, I've deleted a bootcamp partition, will the Time Machine method effectively defrag my HD?

Also, what about something different like Carbon Copy Cloner? I'm looking to do this right the first time.

MacBook Pro :: Clean Install Versus Time Machine Backup - Performance?

Mar 26, 2010

I recently bought an intel x25 160gb for my uMPB. I have a time capsule backing up my system so I just swapped in the new SSD and hit "restore from time machine backup".

About an hour later, the install was finished and everything looked exactly how I left it.

I can't understate how impressive that feature is by the way. However, I wonder if it might be better to do a clean install to really get best performance here.

I say that because I also installed a clean copy of win7 via bootcamp and it actually seems faster than OSX. For example, every common app; firefox, chrome, microsoft office, etc. launches faster in win7 than it does in OSX.

My OSX installation is about 18 months old without any clean installs, and I'm wondering if anyone here has noticed significantly better system performance with a clean install rather than a time machine backup.

Applications :: How Do Recover From A Retrospect Express Image

Jan 5, 2011

this Iomega hard drive that came with Retrospect Express. Needless to say, her hard drive crashed and I'm stuck with the daunting task of getting her data back off the retrospect image. Now I went to both Iomega and Roxio's websites and I must say: These people are really really really retarded - (It's beyond me why either of these buffoons are still in business) Iomega's support doesn't even recognize my serial number and searching for the model: RPHD-TG yeilds 0 results. It's as if they didn't even make the drive.

Applications :: Time Machine - Changing Backup Time?

Oct 15, 2010

I have looked into this a lot already. It is to much that Time Machine backs up every single hour! It would be nice to set it to something like 3 or 5 hours. I have tried a 3rd party app to do this, but... If my computer was off or asleep when it was supposed to back up, it would get an error. It would not just do the backup when i turned it on or when it came out of sleep like stock Time Machine does. I have also seen a way to change the time incraments in the Terminal. (I am very good with it, not a noob) I have tried this and it screws up time machine completely. Maybe it does not work with the newest OS X. By the way... I have a 2010 MacBook Pro, got it 2 months ago.

Does anyone know a solid 3rd party app, that will work seamlessly. Or has anyone changed the time in Terminal and are currently using something different than 1 hour. There is a lot of examples online, but I would like the codeing that you literally used.

Applications :: Time Machine Backup To Time Capsule?

Apr 23, 2010

I started my backup over 24 hours ago and after it completed its 130GB backup, it has now continued backing up endlessly incrementing the xxGB of xxGB without end. I stopped the backup and it then began at 140.9MB to backup. Once it reached 149.9MB it continued; displaying 149.9 MB of 149.9 MB. It is currently at 502.4 MB of 502.4 MB. I am using Snow Leopard. Has anyone seen this happen before? Or know how to resolve?

PowerPC :: P3 Vs G4 Technology - Reevaluation In Retrospect

Jun 8, 2010

I've been thinking lately, the pentium 3 architecture was pretty solid. I mean look what its brought us now, the core duo and core 2 duo architecture are both heavily based off of this design and obviously leave powerpc in the dust. I think the problem is that the SIMD instructions on the pentium 3 weren't heavily pushed in benchmarks, whereas everything done with the G4 was almost always altivec enhanced. Lets look at some articles as well [URL:...] Seems to come to the same conclusion i'm thinking , Also this article goes a bit more in depth so you can see the architectures of the day [URL:....] So I'm not sure, was it all just the buzz of the day? I mean sure, apple may have had the better operating systems, but was it just steve jobs candy coating things to make us think we had the better hardware as well?

Applications :: Time Machine Reinstall - Applications Crashing On Mac

Oct 23, 2009

I recently reinstalled OSX 10.5.8 on my penryn MBP so I could make a larger XP bootcamp partition. After reinstalling leopard and restoring my whole system through time machine my computer is acting weird. First, "the file "itunes library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of itunes". It didn't upgrade itunes to 9 till after I had done all the TM restoring. should be older, no? Second, adobe applications crashed. I was in AI working on a 500 mb file and BOOM, beach ball>crash. All other CS3 unable to open. I have 4 gigs of ram and some of the applications that would not open were not even in use at the time of the AI crash, could this be something with the TM backup? CS3 was all installed together.

Third. While this epic crash is happening on my desktop disappears. Just a blank desktop image. but wait, If I click were things used to be, Bam they appear out of no where, but only if I click where it is supposed to be. It's there in the desktop folder but not showing up as icons on my desktop. I think this has happened to me before the reinstall too, though never all at once, usually when I use the "pinchy" to resize icons one or two will disappear. Fourth. Cisco clean access agent beach balls and requires hard reset. the login window was floating on screen all the way till the screen turned off. These all happened in the same day, now It is working some what like normal, though my itunes is broke. Any ideas on how to fix this itunes? If I only need one application and it's plug-ins (SU and Podium beta) restored through TM ( i have a disk for all the others) is there a way to just restore the one. Would this give me a more stable system over all? should I go ahead and reinstall and restore the one app and do the rest manually?

IMac :: SCSI Tape Drives And Retrospect / Other Backup Solutions

May 26, 2010

So my sister's girlfriend is a professional photographer. Her former consultant get her an SCSI 68-pin connected Sony StorMaster tape drive that backs up her 3 big NAS drives with all her work via EMC Retrospect. This was on a PowerMac G5 tower with an SCSI 68-pin card installed. She's moving and has tasked me with getting it all up and running again at her new place since she's fallen out with the old consultant (who did some weird, weird stuff with their network - why are there 3 switches for the NAS? Why does the Airport run through two of them? WTF?) and got an iMac 27" i7.

Now, problem is, obviously that her i7 has no way of plugging into that SCSI tape drive. She's been using her G5 purely to run Retrospect which is a waste of space and energy. Plus she's moving to a much smaller space, so I really, really want to get it out of there. So here's the thing - I CANNOT find a 68-pin SCSI to USB adapter other than one by Ratoc, which apparently only lets the tape drive function in "mass storage mode" which doesn't really tell me if it will work with Retrospect or not. Is there another solution to keep the current tape drive and plug it into the iMac?

Applications :: Time Machine Backs Up Everything?

Jan 12, 2009

upgraded to Leopard a couple of weeks ago, tried to get Time Machine working with my external hard drive, and was happy initially with the results.

But on further inspection, time machine is backing up my entire computer every hour. How can i stop this to only back up what has changed.

Also, i want to make my external Hard Drive the main disc where everything goes, not just use it as a back up. How can i do this? I tried to do this with my iTunes library but now if i download a new track it immediately saves onto my computer hard drive.

Also, the songs i already had on my laptop are backed up onto my time machine, but they aren't in the same folder as the other stuff which i uploaded after moving the iTunes folder onto my Hard drive, they are still with the backed up stuff.

Applications :: What Is Time Machine Actually Backing Up?

Mar 25, 2009

So, I tried a search for this but didn't really find any details or threads.

I did a nice TM backup on a new MBP, came to about 40GB total, I excluded folders like my itunes library and desktop, where I store a bunch of installers and such.

after a week, I did it again, and it added about 1GB.

Then, after another week, just internet use, a BIT of email and such, I did another backup and it added 8GB to the total, to a total now of 49GB?

WHAT THE HECK was in the newest 8GB? Is that another new snapshot or something, since I CERTAINLY didn't add 8GB of stuff?

Applications :: External HD For Time Machine - 1 Tb Or 2 Tb?

Nov 7, 2009

I've read so many threads on various ext HD's to use with Time Machine & to think I can't name one good recommendation & that's what all the questions are in the threads. So, my conclusion is to go the expensive route and stick with Apple & Time Capsule. At least it's suppose to work together and if there are problems I can deal with it through the warranty & support. Plus, I'll easily figure(read) how to wire it up & I know it's all compatible. So, my question is 1TB or 2TB model? I have started shooting all my images in RAW files which will be the standard from now on, & have about 2000 already. I also have aprox. 2000 ~3MB jpg's now and a few short 15sec videos. I have about 7 CD's full of jpgs and ~500 slides I want to scan/digitize and download to the system. I will be drastically increasing the RAW photo's. I build web sites & have hundreds of thumbnails & smaller web based images associated with those sites which I keep.

Applications :: Time Machine Seems To Be Backing Up?

Mar 10, 2010

I have an external HD (a partition of which was marked as my Time Machine disc) that had a bad power supply. I placed the drive in a new enclosure and it's working fine - with one exception. I don't get any errors in Time Machine, and it appears to be backing up (according to counter-clockwise spinning icon at the top), but when I open Time Machine there aren't any recent timeframes to restore from. As much as I can tell, the last update is from late January, which is when the power supply went bad on my external HD.

My external HD seems to be just fine - I can see, open, use and save data, but for some reason when I open Time Machine there are no recent saved points. Time Machine used to overwrite the oldest restore points, so I'd always have about two weeks of restore points to choose from. Now I just have two weeks from January, and it makes me nervous that my data is being backed up.

Applications :: Office:Mac Versus Office - Windows And Camino Versus Firefox

Feb 14, 2009

I've heard Office:Mac isn't that great, and doesn't make up for what iWork 09 is missing. So I'm wondering what people think about it and why does it get such a bland reputation? Also, do people use a combination of the above? Such as iWork and Office:Windows? Both Offices? I do mainly word processing, some soft Excel work (no hardcore giant spreadsheets...yet), and general PowerPoints for presentations. I have access to cheap iWork/Offices (school discount) and a family pack of the top-level edition of Office:PC (family) so it isn't a big deal to get any of the above.

Lastly, what's the difference between Camino and Firefox? I use Firefox currently and love it, mainly due to the add-ons (weather at the bottom, Gmail alert, skins, page views, other customizations). Tabs seem to be on all browsers these days, so are there any other key differences?

OS X :: Broken Applications Since Time Machine Restore

Sep 21, 2010

I replaced my hard drive and restored the system from a Time Machine backup. It boots and all, but it seems to be missing a component. Both Safari and any app that relies on Safari crash. This affects Safari, Software Update, iTunes, iChat, iPlayer Downloader, and even Installer, among others.

I do have my old hard drive in a SATA enclosure, I just mounted it and tried to run Safari from it without success, which suggests it isn't the app itself that's the problem, but one of it's core files elsewhere on the system. I made the connection to Safari because of the Console logs, which always mentioned both it and com.apple.main-thread.

Here's the other problem, though: when I restored the system, Time Machine helpfully removed all my old backups without asking me, so if I wanted to restore the system from a backup again, I'd have to do it from a new backup which would surely have the same problem anyway. What file to replace? Or even just a way to check and repair my OS X install?
