Nov 2, 2008I decided to reinstall Leopard, Erase and Install. Everything runs much faster of course. I'm doing some restoring from my Time Machine HD. I don't want a complete restore, I'm just grabbing folders here and there from my TM HD and restoring it. I'm doing a backup now and so far it has deleted over 20GB of my backups and it doesn't seem to be stopping.

Dec 5, 2014I have Yosemite 10.10.1 installed on a new MacBook Pro and Time Machine doesn't seem to be working as it should. When I enter Time Machine it doesn't give me any backups to restore from. I see a bunch of dates on the right but when I click on them, nothing happens.
I have a 1TB hard drive that is only about 1/2 full backing up to a 4TB Time Machine drive. I also have an iMac with 750GB hard drive with 3/4 of that full also backing up to the same Time Machine Drive. The Time Machine Drive says it has 1TB free so why can't I access older versions of files on the Time Machine backup?
This is happening on both the Macbook Pro and the older iMac which both have 10.10.1 installed.

Sep 30, 2008My Time Machine has been making the usual regular backups for a few months onto my Time Capsule. I just found that all the backups prior to about a week ago have vanished. It's not a disaster (I think) as I assume that the current backups reflect what's on my iMac (I haven't had to delete files from it yet).
Where did they go? Why did they go?
A possible connection: My TC is 500GB; my iMac 1TB. I recently put extra files for temporary use onto the iMac hard drive - Time Machine said (in effect) 'that's too much, try removing certain folders from the backup'. I excluded said folder and things seemed okay, but it would be at around the time I did that that my old backups have gone.

Mar 29, 2009I don't know if its supposed to do this or not because I am a new time machine user. I have a HFS + Backup Drive using the GUID partition table that is used by time machine. Yesterday I had quite a few backups in my backup directory, today I come on to find that some of these backups are missing. Does it delete some backups?

Dec 31, 2009I'm looking for a program that will let me delete old Time Machine backups on a schedule. I am aware that TM will delete old backups once the drive is full. However, I don't want to let TM fill up my hard drive (having a ton of backups is not useful to me, and I use my hard drive to store movies as well), and I don't like having to manually delete backups when I want to add more files to my external hard drive. I've read many forum posts that recommend "just letting TM do its thing."
I'm just looking for a way to minimize the number of backups that are kept so I can keep plenty of open space on my hard drive for when I add to my movie collection. I'm already using TimeMachineEditor to back up less frequently, but what I would really like is a program that will automatically delete an old backup every time I add a new one. Ideally, I'd like to back up once a day and keep a week's worth of backups. So, once I have 7 backups on my hard drive, the next time my computer backs up the oldest of those 7 will automatically be deleted.
OS X :: Unable To Find Backups / Time Machine Backups Gone
Nov 4, 2009Just wondering if anyone has had a similar problem with the Time Machine. I bought a 500gb Time Capsule last July and it has been running perfectly until a few days agp. I noticed that all my backups were no where to be seen (when entering Time Machine on my MBP) and that it was doing a full backup.. The backup took the guts of 36 hours.
I've come home today to find that all backups are gone again and it is doing another full backup!!!Any ideas what is wrong here?

Dec 8, 2010I have an external that I use with Time Machine, however I don't need incremental backups. Rather, what I would like is only one backup so that I can save space. In this backup, however, I would like specific things to change that change on my computer, as TM already does with its incremental backups. So basically I just want to condense the function of TM into one single backup that will update whenever I back up again. I realize this is not the primary function of TM, but is there any way to make this possible? Or is there any other software that would do this? I've heard of Silverkeeper and Retrospect, but never used them.

Dec 7, 2014I have not had to restore anything from backups for a while, however in the past, before installation of Yosemite I have on occasion had the need to restore a file or folder, mostly from the ~/Documents folder.and never had a problem.
I recently upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1.
Now when attempting to restore a folder that resides in the ~/Documents folder I find that there don't seem to be any backups available. In can see a timeline to the right of the Time Machine screen that goes back many months, but in fact the only folder that I seem to be able to restore from is the Applications folder. None of the other folders show any available backups, however I know there were backups.
The documents folder is of course not on the list of folders/files to exclude from the backup.
How can this be fixed ? Is this perhaps a file permissions error on the timemachine hard drive that can be foxed with the disk utility?
I don't use iCloud drive or iCloud backup or at least I don't think so. Are there any settings that pertain to Time Machine in relation to iCloud backup that I should check ?
This behavior greatly concerns me. I've had a hard drive crash several years ago. Fortunately I did not loose a lot, only a few ripped CDs in the iTunes library which were easy enough to rip again. That crash was the reason I bought an external backup drive the next day an Time Machine has served me well since then. I don't want to loose the work I have in the documents folder.

Oct 12, 2009I have a question about how time machine deals with programs. I am rethinking my backup solution because my 17MBP has had its HDD replaced three times. I have been running winclone for my windows partition and it is simply amazing. I was wondering if I back up from time machine, do all of my programs fall back into place perfectly with serial codes, etc. maintained? I ask because I am in the process of choosing the automated TM backups, or just doing CC clones myself because of how simple it is to restore a backup from a clone.

The maximum space is just about 500gb but time machine has brought it to 338gb with each backup taking 10-20gb. Is this normal? On my other Mac (an aluminum imac C2D), the backups take roughly 80gb of space and on my MBP im already up to 159gb worth of backups. Is there a way to minimize the size of backups?

Sep 21, 2010I replaced my hard drive and restored the system from a Time Machine backup. It boots and all, but it seems to be missing a component. Both Safari and any app that relies on Safari crash. This affects Safari, Software Update, iTunes, iChat, iPlayer Downloader, and even Installer, among others.
I do have my old hard drive in a SATA enclosure, I just mounted it and tried to run Safari from it without success, which suggests it isn't the app itself that's the problem, but one of it's core files elsewhere on the system. I made the connection to Safari because of the Console logs, which always mentioned both it and com.apple.main-thread.
Here's the other problem, though: when I restored the system, Time Machine helpfully removed all my old backups without asking me, so if I wanted to restore the system from a backup again, I'd have to do it from a new backup which would surely have the same problem anyway. What file to replace? Or even just a way to check and repair my OS X install?

Aug 14, 2008I had to reinstall my computer from time machine when apple replaced it; everything worked great except Aperture refused to open. I re-named the existing Aperture and re-installed a fresh copy and now my library has disappeared.
My Aperture library was set up to leave the pictures where they were, so I didn't loose any pictures, but I've lost all of my Events, folders, groupings etc. Does anybody know what files I need to restore in order to get that stuff back? I never had an Aperture Library package in my Pictures to begin with.

So I own a Mid 2009 15" MacBook pro and I love it, performance wise it is great with a 2.8 Core 2 Duo, 4 Gb of DDR3 1066 and the 9400/9600 GT Graphics are plenty to run my 30" monitor at 2560 x 1600 with ease. But of course there is a huge bottleneck in this machine and that is the Slow 5400 RPM 500 Gb Fujitsu Hard Drive. I want to replace this drive with an 80 GB Intel X-18 SSD that I have acquired from an HP laptop that no longer needs it. The drive is a 1.8" micro SATA drive, but I purchased a 1.8 to 2.5 Caddy from NewModeUS for $35

This not only takes care of the interface/power conversion it supports 3.3 Volt drives, which almost all SSDs are, but it also makes the 1.8 drive the exact same dimensions of a typical 2.5 drive. I have already tried it out in my desktop and it benchmarks just as this drive should, super fast! 80 Gb is plenty of storage for me on a laptop, I will keep all my media on the 500 Gb which I am going to put in an external enclosure and carry around in my bag at all times. So for right now I have most of the logistical hardware stuff figured out but where I need a little help is the migration.
Sure I could reload everything from scratch but I would honestly rather not do that and the honestly the thought of doing it makes me put this project off every time just because I need the machine for work and cannot really afford to have it down for a few days, making this a weekend project. I am very particular about how my machines are setup as well and usually do a decent amount of customizations and tweaks to make the OS easier to use for me. This seemed like the perfect solution, in theory everything would be the same when I installed the SSD and booted up, all my data, installed applications and settings would be untouched! Yay right, well then I started reading on some forums that for whatever reason cloning a mechanical drive onto an SDD in a no no and could cause issues, therefore the best bet to is to start with a fresh install of OSX. Damn! Can anyone prove that theory wrong? Has anyone cloned to an SSD before without any issues that you know of? Because I would love to go this route, but if not my plan B is to use my Time Machine back and restore that to my new install.
Now this brings me to the question in the title of this thread, what exactly will Time Machine restore if I have a full up to date backup of my machine and I do as it runs regularly and backs up to a 32 GB SD card (For now until I outgrow it) that is always in my machine. I don't have a ton of data; in fact my HDD only has 31 Gb used, while my Time Machine backup drive has 26 Gb used. That leads me to believe that most of the data is in that backup, I mean it does take a snapshot of your entire system so I don't see why it would not be able to put that data back just as it backed it up, like a system image. While I know all my data and personal files will be restored what about installed applications? Will I need to reload all of them?
Not the end of the world as I always save the installer but it does take time, esp. with things like the Adobe and Office Suites. How about settings, are certain ones remembered? I am talking about things like monitor configurations, wallpapers, dock shortcuts, color labels, background colors, Safari and Chrome Bookmarks, etc. The list could go on but I really just want to know what to expect if I install OSX fresh and then choose to restore from a Time Machine backup, I am sure it will save me a lot of time but may not be as ideal as using SuperDooper or CarbonCopy Cloner.

Oct 25, 2010I have been having a problem editing pictures (screen goes white when I click 'edit') so i went to a discussion about it. I followed directions for fixing the problem including renaming my iphoto folder and now I can't find my old pictures. I changed the name back and still no photos. I tried to go to file vault and restore the pictures but I get a message saying that file vault can't be found. I know a little about fixing problems but some of the information about this issue is over my head. I've had this mac for 2 years and until now have been able to trouble shoot all my problems.

Apr 28, 2009I used Drive Genius 2 (from DVD) to defrag my HDD � and I think it did �but in addition to that it apparently messed everything up so I couldn't boot from it = I had to do a restore from my Time Machine backup � and so I did � but then everything got messed up in terms of permissions, and after a restart - well, it didn't start � so, once again, same restore from Time Machine, and this time everything seems fine, except for the fact that my backup drive tells me that I have no access to it - I have no permission to even open it! And thus I can't use it as a backup or anything else, it's a 1TB useless disk!
Question: Is there any way to "regain" access to my HDD? Any way to have it continue as a backup drive without deleting the "old" backups stored on it now? I also have a small 60GB BootCamp partition with Vista () on the 1TB backup drive.

Dec 30, 2009I had the poor luck of having my Imac HD die a few weeks back. I now have a new Imac HD and would like to restore my HD back to the way it was before it died. I have gone into time machine, then selected my Imac, selected my Imac HD, and selected the correct date in time for the restore. I have clicked restore and the system goes out and starts to do its job. It identifies all the files (roughly 200k files and 11.41GB's), then it starts to copy them, and it chugs away for 30-45 mins.
Then up pops a message:
"you can't copy "system" because it has the same name as another item on the destination volume, and that volume doesn't distinguish between upper and lower case letters in file names." The restore aborts and I have wasted over an hour with nothing to show for it. What can I do to restore my system? I have been unable to operate for 3 weeks now, and the people at the apple store just keep telling me how easy time machine is to restore from.

Jul 2, 2012I have an iMac running the latest version of Lion (10.7.4) and which I have upgraded to a one terabyte hard drive and full memory capability. I back up to a My Book 2 terabyte external hard drive using Time Machine. My iMac is often very sticky, though I've done most of the diagnostics I know of and preferences etc. are seemingly all OK and fcuk -fs gives a positive result! The Mac is often hard to wake from sleep and in particular seems to spend a lot of time backing up very-very slowly, with the result that it frustratingly seems to be backing up most of the time with the consequent effects on using other programs. Also the whole thing seems to grind to a halt after a hard days work with quite a few applications open. I'm wondering what can be causing this and what I can do to overcome this very frustrating and debilitating problem?
