Mac Pro :: Time Machine Versus Mirrored Raid

Apr 7, 2009

Having spent that much on a computer, added to the fact that I'm now starting to get more music/audio freelance work, means I'm keen to get a decent backup system going. I aim eventually to get a 1tb external drive and use time machine to backup my samples drive, but what do you reckon would be the best option for the system drive?

OS X :: Creating Mirrored RAID On Startup Disk?

Dec 24, 2010

I have a Mac Pro that I want to create a mirrored RAID set in.

I have a 1TB Hard Drive that is the main system drive.

I just added a 2nd 1TB Hard Drive that I wanted to use along with this first hard drive to create a mirrored RAID set.

I used the following document to help with the process:

[URL]

I have opened up Disk Utility and think I may know how to do this but a few things concern me.

First, it states that it will erase the contents of the drives it's using to mirror. I had the idea it would simply duplicate the data onto the other drive. Is it true that it will delete the data on the current drive?

Mac Pro :: Software RAID Versus Hardware RAID?

Apr 20, 2010

I am planning on getting a 2010 MP when they come and have a question about it. I am 90% sure that with my budget, I will not be able to after a RAID card. I am wondering if software RAID would be alright or if it's so bad it's not worth doing. Also, there is small chance that I could buy a RAID card later on, how would I install it? I will be using it for 3D animation with Maya and some zbrush modeling. Also I will be doing some Photoshop and illustrator and maybe some gaming on win 7 boot camp. Feel free to list any other pros and cons about either a software RAID or hardware RAID, I wana make sure I have all the details before making a final decision on it.

OS X Server :: Create Mirrored RAID Set From Existing Drive And New Drive?

Oct 4, 2006

I have a PowerMac G3 running OS X Server 10.4.7. There is an 80GB ATA boot hard drive and a SATA card and two 250GB SATA drives. One SATA drive is existing and has data on it; I just installed the second one because I want to mirror the 1st drive onto the 2nd one.My questions are: how do I do it? When I try to create a RAID set in the Disk Utility GUI, it says all data will be destroyed. I cancelled that.So I tried diskutil enableRAID mirror disk1, which told me I could only mirror volumes. The volume name is RAID, so I tried diskutil enableRAID mirror /Volumes/RAID which gave me an error "Error enabling disk to RAID Could not unmount disk (-10000)"

Hardware :: Time Machine With Raid 1 Setup

Aug 9, 2009

I have two questions. Firstly, I am considering buying a western digital MyBook Studio Edition II [URL]. If I use time machine with this drive, will I be able to remove one of the drives and keep it off-site for safekeeping and have time machine continue to backup on the remaining one as usual? Secondly, if I remove drive #2 and keep it off site, would dropping it back into the raid setup update drive #2 with drive #1's current time machine backup? I'm new to raid, and I am basically trying to have a time machine backup, and a off site backup.

Mac Pro :: Time Machine Better On Software Or Hardware Raid?

Jun 27, 2012

I have a Mac Pro (late 2009) with 1 X 250 GB SSD (Runs OS and Applications), 4 x 2TB  Drives, of which 2 are RAID 0 (Western Digital Black) for my video work and the other 2 (Western Digital Green) are raid 0 and used for time machine .I needed more space so I purchased 2 x Western Digital 2TB Black drives and I purchased 3 x 2TB Green Drives.

My plan was to take out the current 2 Green Drives from my Mac Pro and replace them with 2xTB Black drives and then striping them all giving me 1 large 8TB Volume made up of 4 x Western Digital Blacks. I was going to then use the 5 Western Digital Greens in an external enclosure and set them up as Raid 5. This way I have 8TB + a spare drive in case of any failures.

I purchased a [URL] thinking that this would be perfect. But today I have found out that I am now slowing my system down using this method as its software raid and getting an enclosure which has Hardware Raid is a much better solution. [URL] The company I purchased the enclosure from now are asking for a 20% restock charge as the fault was that off my own. Is it worth sending back the enclosure and getting the Lian Li? Will I notice a big difference in speed and does Time Machine work better with one method over the other?

Mac Pro :: Setting Up RAID Zero Configuration / Use 3rd Drive For Time Machine Back Up

Sep 25, 2008

Is there any benefit to ordering the MAC Pro Raid card for setting up 2 x 500gig SATA drives in a Raid Zero configuration? Or..Is this accomplished just as well via software in leopard??

Apologies if this is a stupid question - but just wondering if I can save some $ by not having to order the RAID card without giving up anything.

I will use a 3rd 1TB drive for Time machine for back up.

OS X :: Time Machine Versus Manual Restore

Aug 24, 2009

Earlier I was thinking I would manually backup all of my data, do a "clean" install of Snow Leopard, and reinstall all of my apps.

I'm now wondering if just doing a clean install and restoring from Time Machine is the way to go. I want to clear out as much "junk" as I can... will this do the trick?

Also, I've deleted a bootcamp partition, will the Time Machine method effectively defrag my HD?

Applications :: EMC Retrospect For Mac Versus Time Machine

Dec 15, 2009

I just bought an Iomega ego 500gb mac edition external hard drive. It comes with a protection suite which includes EMC retrospect express and Iomega quikprotect. They don't sound like they will do anything different than what time machine already does, so I'm wondering if I should install them or not? I don't want a bunch of software competing for the same job and working in the background.

Also, what about something different like Carbon Copy Cloner? I'm looking to do this right the first time.

MacBook Pro :: Clean Install Versus Time Machine Backup - Performance?

Mar 26, 2010

I recently bought an intel x25 160gb for my uMPB. I have a time capsule backing up my system so I just swapped in the new SSD and hit "restore from time machine backup".

About an hour later, the install was finished and everything looked exactly how I left it.

I can't understate how impressive that feature is by the way. However, I wonder if it might be better to do a clean install to really get best performance here.

I say that because I also installed a clean copy of win7 via bootcamp and it actually seems faster than OSX. For example, every common app; firefox, chrome, microsoft office, etc. launches faster in win7 than it does in OSX.

My OSX installation is about 18 months old without any clean installs, and I'm wondering if anyone here has noticed significantly better system performance with a clean install rather than a time machine backup.

Mac Pro :: Raid 6 Versus 60?

Oct 8, 2010

Okay, so... To make a raid 60, you make a raid 6 first then stripe that. If you started with a 4 disk raid 6 array and increased your number of disks to 8 when you stripe it, I have no trouble visualizing performance and capacity advantages.

However, I'm having trouble visualizing trade offs, speed or capacity differnces if you compared a 8 drive raid 6 vs an 8 drive raid 60.

If you are not Nanofrog, but you did stay at a holiday inn last night, you are welcome to reply as well.

Of course now when I start up time machine the backup isn't there. How do I get Time Machine to recognize the backup? I have it on two places - a time capsule and a separate external HD.

It is set to Monitor(1920 x 1200) and TV(1920 x 1080)

Whenever mirroring is off then the monitor takes up all the space and has no bars

is there any way to correct this so my shiny new monitor can take up the entire new monitor space?

Hardware :: Shared Mac Printer - Getting Mirrored Print

Sep 30, 2008

I'm trying to set up a shared printer on windows. The printer is physically hooked up to an iMac G5 via USB and I'm trying to set the printer up on my xp machine. I followed these instructions and aside from a few things that weren't the same as explained (I'll go into further detail below), everything went fairly smoothly. I was able to add the printer and print a test page, but when the test page came out, everything was mirrored. I blurred the printer information because I just grabbed the image off the net and reversed it. The printer information on the image had nothing to do with my own printer. Now about the things that were slightly different than in the steps from the link above:

Step 4: there was no usb printer item in the list, but the printer name DID show up: HP Deskjet 6500 Series usb, so I selected that
Step 5: I did not have to enter the URI manually. I think by selecting the printer name in Step 4, it automatically entered the URI of the printer.

The printer is a HP Deskjet 6540 running on OS 10.5, fully updated. The Windows machine is running XP SP3, fully updated. I've done a lot of fiddling around and just can't figure it out. The driver I'm using on the windows machine is the drive directly from the HP website for my specific HP printer. Alternatively, I also tried adding the printer to CUPS by the following steps:
- start terminal
- type lpinfo -v to get the URI of the printer
- type lpadmin -p <printername> -E -v <uri> -m raw

Hardware :: Can A RAID 1 Guardian Maximus Rebuild Easily / Have Partitioned The RAID Set

Dec 2, 2009

I just bought a Guardian Maximus RAID1 kit and I have two 1TB drives in it. I'm using it over Airport Extreme as an airdisk (mac osx 10.6.2)

My question is simply: am I running a risk by partitioning it into two partitions? Should I ever have to rebuild the failed disk (which I understand is really simple with the Guardian Maximus) - will it have trouble doing two partitions? I'm using one 500gb partition for time machine and one 500gb partition as redundant itunes/media.

Hardware :: Dell 2407WFP A04 Versus Dell G2410 Versus Dell 2209WA Versus Samsung F2380

Nov 2, 2009

I'm looking for a new monitor to go with my MBP, and I'm stuck trying to choose between the ones listed above.

The 2407WFP is a couple of years old now I guess, but it's the rev A04 version, which supposedly fixed the (few) problems with what was otherwise meant to be a great screen. It's an sPVA screen.

I've heard good reviews of the G2410, with its LED backlighting. It's still a TN panel and I hear so much bad stuff about them.

The 2209WA is an eIPS panel which I like the sound of, but it's smaller and lower resolution.

The F2380 is a cPVA panel, the image quality looks better but I've heard bad things about blacks on this panel.

Is it possible to get a highpoint raid controller and put those 4 drives in a raid 5 array (and then create partitions inside that array) - or do you need to have 1 drive by itself for the operating system, and then create a raid array using the remaining 3 drives?

Lastly, are the highpoint 3500 series a decent card? and fully compatible?
