What's a good program that will let me see everything on a drive that's been deleted? Accidentally lost some video files on a shoot and am trying to recover them. Tried FileSalvage but it doesn't see MXF files.
View 6 RepliesI just deleted one folder size of almost 5gb. Was full of personal videos. So they are not like small size of 10k pics. There were like 40 videos in total. What is the chance to recover them in good condition? And with which app. would happen best? I just downloaded 2 apps, stellarphoenix and Mac File Recovery. I started stellar and it is taking forever to search the hard drive. I tried the MFR for like 10 minutes it seemed a little faster but the videos and most of the files weren't in good shape.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a MacPro (Intel), and I had my Music folder on a second (non-boot) internal drive. That drive was getting full, so I bought yet another internal drive to put in one of the other bays, thinking to copy the folders to the new, larger-capacity drive. So I bought a 2 Tb drive and transferred all my MOVIES to the new drive, but then went back and deleted my MUSIC folder and emptied the trash. I knew immediately that I'd made a mistake.
I haven't written anything to that drive whatsoever from that moment on, so absolutely nothing should have been over-written. I have plenty of room on the new drive to which I can recover the deleted files. Unfortunately the folder/directory was very large, with over 20,000 files, mostly of podcasts/spoken word stuff, much of which is no longer available or would represent thousands of hours of download time, plus all my digitized folk music from long out-of-print LP records.
You'd think I'd be more responsible with >600 Gb of data! However, fortunately the drive is in good working order, it just requires a good recovery strategy. I know that services that do recovery charge a fortune, and because I haven't written anything to that drive and it still mounts without problems, I'm hoping I can do this myself with a good data recovery software package. Because I am talking about literally thousands of files, it is just too painful to think about editing all the metadata about each file (name, artist, album, etc.), and ideally I would like to recover the files and the file structure so podcasts are recovered as such, etc.
Is this at all possible?
If so, what are the relative merits of File Salvage vs. Data Rescue vs. Kernel for Macintosh (Nucleus Data Recovery) vs. VirtualLab Data Recovery vs. Stellar Phoenix? Is there something better than these--these are the only ones I found on a Web search. Are there any head-to-head reviews of which someone is aware?
So my friend, whos' computer this is, deleted my account and all its files associated with it (when he was mad at me lol) but didn't realize or forgot that there was a text document on there with atleast 30 hrs of work on it and i hadn't managed to back it up on another system yet. so is there any way to recover this file? I have filesalvage running currently and tried diskwarrior but that didn't seem to be the proper tool to use. Any mac freaks got any advice? It'd be really nice NOT to have to repeat 30 hrs of work, but at this rate its already taken 10 hrs or so just trying to recover this file.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI am trying to recovery a file created in Microsoft Office 2008 for Mac. The file was lost after a power outage. In an attempt to recover the file, my first thought was to check for the file in the Microsoft AutoRecovery 2008 folder within my hardrive. However, the folder only contains a total of four files! Why? If my Microsoft Word is set up to auto save a document every 10 minutes...then how is it possible the folder could only contain 4 files? I am at a loss of how else to recover this file. I am currently attempting to do so with a free trial of Data Recovery Software to see if the file I lost even still exists, with no success so far.

My iMac (27-inch, Mid 2011) came with Lion installed. I deleted the recovery partition when I triple booted with Windows 7, Ubuntu and Mac OS.
Is there any way to re-create a deleted recovery partition in Lion? I've read that you can download Lion from the App Store & write it to a USB using the Disk Utility.
I am currently dual booting with Mac OS X Lion (10.7.4) and Windows 7 (installed via Boot Camp).

In trying to set up shared music among the users of my computer I think I deleted the original file info, even though there was a music folder showing folders for the individual artists in my library. These however now appear to be empty. I have the music listed in iTunes but when I try to open a song I get a window with the following message, "The song "...." could not be used because the original file could not be found. Would you like to locate it?" But no luck locating the files. The guy at the Apple Genius Bar said I could retrieve the music but refused to tell me how because it is supposedly illegal. I don't know why it is illegal because the tunes were purchased. But he did tell me to google the problem and I have come up empty handed.

View 2 Replies View RelatedMy setup is a 27" C2D iMac, 4GB RAM, running SL, all latest updates. iTunes is latest version with the library hosted on an external Drobo connected via FW800. I have no iPods plugged in just now and have disabled automatic sync with my ATV so I know there shouldn't be any tasks running within iTunes itself.
This morning I get a message about a corrupt iTunes library. I restored the file from a backup and after a long time referencing the corresponding .xml file, iTunes loaded up. 95% of the library was fine, but for some reason, it had lost some files, leaving me with exclamation marks scattered around the place. If I manually locate the file, that solves the problem, so while its a pain, I can sort it out, or I guess the new equivalent of consolidate library should clear it up.
Anyway, for the last few hours, iTunes is very slow. Rest of the machine is fine and its not hogging resources according to activity monitor, but its clearly doing something which is making it appear to be un-responding. When I switch to it, it takes a while to appear, then the spinning beach ball, then maybe 30 seconds to a minute later, it becomes active for a short time before becoming unresponsive again.
(Using Snow Leopard 10.6.2). Over the last 12 months or so, I've managed to fill up the "Backups.backupdb" file on the external HD to about 400GB. I'm pretty confident that I have all these files safely backed-up (in other other files) on the same external HD. So, I thought I'd have a clear-out and get rid of the contents of this "Backups.backupdb" file on the external HD. I followed the instructions on this page: [URL]
So, I could see (after I did it), that when I entered into Time Machine (with the timeline and universe landscape backdrop) all the files had gone. But when I looked into the "Backups.backupdb" file on the external HD, the files were still there, so I highlighted them all, and placed them into the Trash. I've not emptied the trash yet, but before I do, I just wanted to ask, was is this ok to do, or can it cause problems to just delete the files from the "Backups.backupdb" file on the external HD?
I deleted my startup and recovery drives. I still have every thing on external hard drive but cannot get my drives back on internal drive. Is there anyway to get those drives back and get all my info from my external drive back on my computer?

I've made a bit of a cock up with a website i've been developing, and being a bit new to all things Mac i've deleted some files.
Basically i've downloaded a copy of the website from the server to my local disc but the local copy also contained all my raw files PSD's etc. I didn't realise that transmit deleted the local copy before downloading and not merging them which is what most windows ftp software does.
Anyway, long story short, is there any way of restoring those files either via transmit or another bit of software ?
Before I realized that I should not rename or delete anything in my Iphoto folder, I had already renamed and deleted a bunch of stuff out of it. Now I can't access any of the pics in Iphoto. Is there any way to go back and undo everything? How can I get those photos back into Iphoto?

While copying files from my digital camera xD card onto my mini, the Card reader un-mounted itself and remounted its self several times, I have no idea why...Now I have a load of 0Kb files in the folder where I was copying to. I can delete these, but they come up with a "file in use" error message so I need to click for each file to be deleted... ~350 left I did try a restart thinking that may clear up any "pending" file transfers from the system to allow them to be deleted like a normal file
View 6 Replies View RelatedI accidentally deleted all of the files on a friend's portable drive, when using terminal to try to delete a very large folder (the Trash Can was not working it was so large)--since the files/folders were very recently deleted I am looking into data recovery software to get the files back. The problem is that the HFS file system seems to be designed in such a way that once a folder/file is deleted, it is very difficult to recover it's name even if its data can be recovered, so most data recovery programs (such as FileSalvage) will recover only known file types and give them a a number (such as 0004.jpg). Does anyone know of any Mac/HFS recovery software that has found a way around this particular issue and can recover data with the folder structure/file names intact?

I was working on a short story I had not yet saved in Microsoft Works Word Processor when it said it became unresponsive and had to close. I have been searching all over the computer for traces of this unsaved file.
Under C:/Windows/Prefetch there are files from around the time I lost the document and they are "PF" files. There is even one called WKSWP.EXE-25E36596 , which gives me hope it might be related to the file I was working on. When I open it in Notepad I get gobbly goop.

The main problem is, the memory indicates the files are still on the computer somewhere; instead of 298 GB I still have 240 GB.
I did not save the recovery key for filevault 2 when I set it up. For safety I would like to store it somewhere. Can I access it ? Somewhere in the keychain ? Otherwise I will have to uncrypt and recrpyt all my disk.

View 3 Replies View RelatedThis is weird, but apparently it does it in 4 and 5. I just never had cause to notice. I'm working in Flash on a PC, brought an swf to mac to try it in different browsers. It'll open ok in Firefox. But in the Safari open file menu it's grayed out - in spite of the fact that it loads these from websites all the time without issue. So I went into Get Info for the file and found that neither Safari or Firefox were listed under 'Recommended Apps'. It did list Quicktime, which insisted it was not a movie (it even has Flip 4 Mac and Perian). I finally got it to load by clicking 'Show ALL applications' and clicking open with Safari.
But why on Earth did I have to go thru all that? Does anyone know why mac doesn't recognize a simple swf file as openable on it's own hard drive?
