Applications :: Panic Transmit / Restore Deleted Local Files?
Dec 26, 2010
I've made a bit of a cock up with a website i've been developing, and being a bit new to all things Mac i've deleted some files.
Basically i've downloaded a copy of the website from the server to my local disc but the local copy also contained all my raw files PSD's etc. I didn't realise that transmit deleted the local copy before downloading and not merging them which is what most windows ftp software does.
Anyway, long story short, is there any way of restoring those files either via transmit or another bit of software ?

When you delete something but change your mind, and the app is still in the trash bin, how can I restore back to its location with all the components? I know I can simply drag the main app to my application folder but what about the other components?

Last night in a desperate attempt to get some GBs back, I went crazy on Spring Cleaning and accidentally deleted all my .plist files... and considering I have tons of media editing software that I had arranged the preferences to ultimate perfection, I'm kinda upset.
How can i get them back?? I just redragged them from the trash to the Library/Preferences folder but they don't seem to be doing much there.

I wanted to unzip a file with BetterZip. It said there exists another file with the same name.I answered it's question if I want to replace or unzip this file to another place just with replace. But the result was that the whole content of the folder where the file should be extracted to, was deleted by BetterZip.The volume on which that happened is not my start / system volume, it's a separate volume only with data.
1.) Exists a way to see a list of the files which were deleted ? (Because I don't know if there was something really important inside.)
2.) Is there a terminal command or another method to get these files back to that folder ?

I've tried getting some answers to this from Apple support forums and my local mac forum but didn't get much info... I've removed some important language files while using monolingual (namely -English (American) -English (British) not realizing these are subset and required). I should've read the FAQ first... now some programs are appearing in weird character formats. Can I restore these language files with my Time Machine back ups? Which folder would I need to replace back with previous file? Since I did this only late last night, I should be able to just replace a certain system file folder, without causing much headache

My mom accidentally deleted all the Christmas photos when she only meant to delete just one of them. She'd already deleted them off the camera. It all happened so fast, before Time Machine or any backups.

I was backing up my drive this evening. I left the Mac alone and realised when I returned that Time Machine deleted my oldest, and most important, Time Machine backup.
It's on an external hard drive.
Is there any way to recover this at all? This is so massively important!

I accidentally deleted my entire iTunes library. What happened was that I intended to delete all the songs from just one artist but for some reason, my iTunes deleted everything in my library which I have collected over the past 6 years. It gets worse because:
1 - I can't get my files back from my iPod because it died about a year ago
2 - I agreed to move all files to my recycle bin (at that point I had no idea I was deleting my entire library) and when I went to check the bin, none of the files were there
3 - I attempted a system restore but all it did was to return my folders with no files in them
4 - I tried to use a couple of undelete files software but none of them found the deleted files.
I'm really desperate to get my files back.

Unfortunately the logic board of my (late 2011) MacBook Pro died. Luckily it was an old unibody model, so I could move my SSD to a similar (albeit older, mid-2009) model and booting up my installation went fine.Â
The only problem I am facing is that I seem to have lost all items in the Local Items keychain, this includes all my Apple Mail passwords and a lot of passwords I entered in Safari. These were very long passwords I generated to be automatically used when needed, for security.Â
It seems that the Local Items keychain is not a .keychain file, but a directory with a SQLite database which is used when iCloud Keychain is disabled. Apparently it just created a new directory with an empty Local Items keychain instead of using the existing one. The name of the directory seems to be an unique ID related to the hardware I'm using.Â
I have already tried to rename my old keychain directory to the UUID of the new one and rebooting, but then it simply renames the user.kb file to user.kb-invalid and starts out with an empty keychain again. I cannot imagine that you always lose all your passwords like this every time your hardware goes defective? I still have the data stored in the login.keychain file, but since I have used Mavericks it apparently does not store all passwords there anymore.Â
how I can migrate the passwords from my old Local Items keychain to the new one?

I need them to do (FTP to my webhost). Both of them cost the same amount to purchase. Transmit has a good track record with people but Flow seems prettier and offers touch gestures. I don't do anything crazy with FTP, pretty much just straight forward stuff to maintain a small forum and other personal sites.

Which program is better for FTP and S3 use? The way I see it is that they both do it, but Transmit is cheaper and doesn't integrate with Finder. Expandrive is more expensive but integrates with Finder.

Yesterday my wife's IMac (Bought in 2007, running SL)started to "Crash" Safari, and firefox were freezing and then the problem expanded to other programs like itunes. So this is what I did.
1. Copied all music and pictures to an external drive
2. Used the installation disk to restore a backup from time machine
3. Left it overnight
4. This morning the Imac said restore successful please restart
5. I did and then I got this grey screen with a picture of the power button on it telling me in lots of different languages to press the power button and restart.
6. I have done this about ten times now and it just keeps coming back
I am running the Imac with a bluetooth keyboard but do have access to a wired one. No idea if that makes a difference just thought I would mention it.

I have a MacPro (Intel), and I had my Music folder on a second (non-boot) internal drive. That drive was getting full, so I bought yet another internal drive to put in one of the other bays, thinking to copy the folders to the new, larger-capacity drive. So I bought a 2 Tb drive and transferred all my MOVIES to the new drive, but then went back and deleted my MUSIC folder and emptied the trash. I knew immediately that I'd made a mistake.
I haven't written anything to that drive whatsoever from that moment on, so absolutely nothing should have been over-written. I have plenty of room on the new drive to which I can recover the deleted files. Unfortunately the folder/directory was very large, with over 20,000 files, mostly of podcasts/spoken word stuff, much of which is no longer available or would represent thousands of hours of download time, plus all my digitized folk music from long out-of-print LP records.
You'd think I'd be more responsible with >600 Gb of data! However, fortunately the drive is in good working order, it just requires a good recovery strategy. I know that services that do recovery charge a fortune, and because I haven't written anything to that drive and it still mounts without problems, I'm hoping I can do this myself with a good data recovery software package. Because I am talking about literally thousands of files, it is just too painful to think about editing all the metadata about each file (name, artist, album, etc.), and ideally I would like to recover the files and the file structure so podcasts are recovered as such, etc.
Is this at all possible?
If so, what are the relative merits of File Salvage vs. Data Rescue vs. Kernel for Macintosh (Nucleus Data Recovery) vs. VirtualLab Data Recovery vs. Stellar Phoenix? Is there something better than these--these are the only ones I found on a Web search. Are there any head-to-head reviews of which someone is aware?

My setup is a 27" C2D iMac, 4GB RAM, running SL, all latest updates. iTunes is latest version with the library hosted on an external Drobo connected via FW800. I have no iPods plugged in just now and have disabled automatic sync with my ATV so I know there shouldn't be any tasks running within iTunes itself.
This morning I get a message about a corrupt iTunes library. I restored the file from a backup and after a long time referencing the corresponding .xml file, iTunes loaded up. 95% of the library was fine, but for some reason, it had lost some files, leaving me with exclamation marks scattered around the place. If I manually locate the file, that solves the problem, so while its a pain, I can sort it out, or I guess the new equivalent of consolidate library should clear it up.
Anyway, for the last few hours, iTunes is very slow. Rest of the machine is fine and its not hogging resources according to activity monitor, but its clearly doing something which is making it appear to be un-responding. When I switch to it, it takes a while to appear, then the spinning beach ball, then maybe 30 seconds to a minute later, it becomes active for a short time before becoming unresponsive again.

(Using Snow Leopard 10.6.2). Over the last 12 months or so, I've managed to fill up the "Backups.backupdb" file on the external HD to about 400GB. I'm pretty confident that I have all these files safely backed-up (in other other files) on the same external HD. So, I thought I'd have a clear-out and get rid of the contents of this "Backups.backupdb" file on the external HD. I followed the instructions on this page: [URL]
So, I could see (after I did it), that when I entered into Time Machine (with the timeline and universe landscape backdrop) all the files had gone. But when I looked into the "Backups.backupdb" file on the external HD, the files were still there, so I highlighted them all, and placed them into the Trash. I've not emptied the trash yet, but before I do, I just wanted to ask, was is this ok to do, or can it cause problems to just delete the files from the "Backups.backupdb" file on the external HD?

I use Carbon Copy Cleaner to backup. I've set it to backup to a sparse, rewritable disk image. If I, say, delete a file, then do another backup, will the file I deleted still be in the folder it was in, or will it disappear as if the backup was cleared and redone?

My computer broke down so I had a repaired and the original software was re-installed and it worked perfect. Whenever I restore from Time Machine, I get the kernel panic error. I have to reload the original software and it works perfect again. I tried using Migration Assistant, but it fails every time after 30 minutes of saying 1 minute left to transfer documents. I go in to Time Machine and view my external hard drive and all my stuff is still there, except I noticed my applications are crossed out. At least the non-default ones. That may just be because they're not currently loaded.Â
What can I do from here? I was using Lion before my computer went down. I'm now using the OSX install DVD. I also have the Snow Leopard, but haven't tried that, if it even makes a difference.
