OS X V10.7 Lion :: Display The Recovery Key For File-vault 2?
Apr 3, 2012
I did not save the recovery key for filevault 2 when I set it up. For safety I would like to store it somewhere. Can I access it ? Somewhere in the keychain ?  Otherwise I will have to uncrypt and recrpyt all my disk. Â

I have a 2007 macbook pro with legacy filevault enabled. I realised after I had installed Lion that there was a new version of filevault, but when I attempted to move to the new filevault I was unable to get rid of the legacy version as the process seems to demand more disc space than was available, so I have just left things as they were.I have now bitten the bullett and have bought a new Macbook Air, which will still be running Lion...when I move my stuff from my old to my new laptop, with migration assistant, will the legacy filevault move too, or is it specific to the old machine?

I keep several encrypted disk images in the Dropbox folder on my laptop. Can I use File Vault to encrypt the laptop when it contains these already encrypted .dmg and .sparsebundle files? Or will this double encryption harm them? Â
(These folders need to be individually encrypted to reside in an encrypted form on the Dropbox server. If I unencrypt them and use only File Vault, then when I'm on the computer and File Vault is off, the folders will sync to Dropbox in their unencrypted form. I want to keep these folders individually encrypted for security on the Dropbox server, then use FIle Vault on top of that to secure the rest of my laptop in case of theft).

If I encrypt an external drive using File Vault 2 (Lion 10.7.3) as a Time Machine backup from my current laptop, then later purchase a new laptop and attempt to read that encrypted backup, will there be any problems to consider? Â
1) I expect that, since the password will be stored on my current laptop, there would be a problem reading the password on a new laptop Â
2) I was told that opening a File Vault 2Â encrypted external drive would require the same laptop, as the encryption creates a match of serial numbers between the laptop and the encrypted drive.Â

I have not used my iMac in about a year. Forgot the user password and don't remember the file vault password.
I used the cd to reset the userpasword, but it won't let me log on. It says in order to change the file vault password
I need the old user password and I don't remember it. The cd is of no use to me, it won't let me click on the system

I literally just bought my Macbook Pro today. I got the most basic model (13 in. with minimum memory). I'm going to college in the fall soooo it's going to be my college laptop obviously. Anyway, I was playing around with the settings and I noticed my firewall was off so I obviously turned that on, but when I got to the filvault I was unsure as to whether or not I should turn that on or leave it off.

I just wanted to let people know about an experience I had the other day. After using my Powerbook G4 for about 4 years with some files encrypted with File Vault my Mac suddenly refused to let me log into my user account. I took the Mac to an authorized Apple repairer and was told that a file in File Vault had become corrupted and infected the rest of my hard drive. I lost all my files and documents, photos, music - the lot. When it happens, all you get from Apple is "Sorry about that, but there is nothing we can do - You should have backed up all your files".
I'd just like to warn people not to use File Vault.

I accidentally deleted all of the files on a friend's portable drive, when using terminal to try to delete a very large folder (the Trash Can was not working it was so large)--since the files/folders were very recently deleted I am looking into data recovery software to get the files back. The problem is that the HFS file system seems to be designed in such a way that once a folder/file is deleted, it is very difficult to recover it's name even if its data can be recovered, so most data recovery programs (such as FileSalvage) will recover only known file types and give them a a number (such as 0004.jpg). Does anyone know of any Mac/HFS recovery software that has found a way around this particular issue and can recover data with the folder structure/file names intact?

We lost a few files we were working on yesterday. Nothing saved after about 1PM can be found. Eek! . Is there a good way to deal with this, see if there are files there that are not showing up somehow perhaps? Or a good file recovery program perhaps?

I have a guest account on my Mac with a background image I really like. The problem is that it looks like someone deleted the actual background image, because I can't find it anymore. When I login to the account, the image is still being shown.

While my eMac is in the shop (another long story I've told elsewhere here), I am using my work PC. I was working on a short story I had not yet saved in Microsoft Works Word Processor when it said it became unresponsive and had to close. I have been searching all over the computer for traces of this unsaved file.
Under C:/Windows/Prefetch there are files from around the time I lost the document and they are "PF" files. There is even one called WKSWP.EXE-25E36596 , which gives me hope it might be related to the file I was working on. When I open it in Notepad I get gobbly goop.

What's a good program that will let me see everything on a drive that's been deleted? Accidentally lost some video files on a shoot and am trying to recover them. Tried FileSalvage but it doesn't see MXF files.

I attempted to change the username of my Tiger 10.4.11
However I forgot the consequences..
Amongst the essential missing files include:
* iTunes library
* Pictures
The main problem is, the memory indicates the files are still on the computer somewhere; instead of 298 GB I still have 240 GB.

I just deleted one folder size of almost 5gb. Was full of personal videos. So they are not like small size of 10k pics. There were like 40 videos in total. What is the chance to recover them in good condition? And with which app. would happen best? I just downloaded 2 apps, stellarphoenix and Mac File Recovery. I started stellar and it is taking forever to search the hard drive. I tried the MFR for like 10 minutes it seemed a little faster but the videos and most of the files weren't in good shape.

I was looking around in the Applications folder and noticed that my browser displayed a page whose URL was file:///Applications/ that contained a pane that started like this (without the borders):Index of file:///Applications/Up to higher level directoryShow hidden objects(old) iMovie093/19/1210:46:20(old) iPhoto 09.app3/30/1019:55:35.DS_Store22 KB3/19/1218:15:24.localized6/13/1111:46:03Address Book.app2/9/1217:16:53Adobe4/27/1010:21:19Adobe Reader 93/19/1012:04:30App Store.app2/9/1217:17:01Automator.app2/9/1217:16:59Calculator.app2/9/1217:16:58etc., etc, etc.Â
I swear (figuratively) on a stack of manuals (that I don't have) that I did nothing (consciously) to trigger the "index" display. I've figured out that I can create an "index" (whatever in **** that is) of Macintosh HD anytime I want by opening a browser window and keying file:/// into the address line. By appending a filename from this "index" (wiHti) to file:/// I get an "index" (wiHti) of that file.
(1) What is an "index"?
(2) Why?
(3) How does Firefox know to do this?
(4) What triggered display of the Index of file: ///Applications/ in the first place?

I want to setup a home network around a Mac Mini Server. I want to access this server via a 27" Apple Thunderbolt Display w. mouse+keyboard combo.I also want to be able to connect my macbook to this Display however (using thunderbolt).I would like to be able to connect this MBP (thinking about the new 15" rMBP) such that it will retrieve my data (mainly photos) from the central server vault (on the Mac Mini server) and in the same time output the video to the Display.
Motivation: I have a huge photo database which I want to store on the storage disk(s) attached to the server (for now the MM's internal disks) and not on the MacBook .... I more or less only use the (powerfull) MBP as the workstation and want to have the possibility to have the output also displayed on a large display (the 27" ATD).Maybe it is a stupid & trivial question I am asking here but I am a bit confused about the possibilities of connecting devices via Thunderbolt.

I have not been able to connect to the AppStore. My internet connection may be too slow or there is some other problem. The Apple helpdesk is less than helpful. They do not assist with connection problems. Result: No AppStore for me. So How do I upgrade to Lion? (The problem started when the Lion USB stick was not yet available)Â One possible solution is to buy a new MacBook. I may have to, because the one I am using is falling apart.Â
So, suppose I have this brand new MacBook and no connection to the AppStore. Is there a way to create a recovery DVD or USB stick from the new MacBook, without buying the official USB stick?Â
All articles about Lion recovery assume that you have an internet connection. I have news: not every internet connection counts as an internet connection as far as Apple is concerned. Funny thing is, that all updates to Leopard and Snow Leopard went without problems.Â

Whenever I try to install the latest preview of Mountain Lion, it says"Some features of OS X Mountain Lion are not supported for the disk "R2iMac". The warning directs me here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4649 It seems like it'll let me continue, but once it restarted it eventually said the installation failed. The point is I do have a Recovery HD and I don't know what to do about this. Check out my partitions:And here's the error dialouge: Please advise.

I'm on a 2008 model Mac Pro 8-core system for work. For whatever reason it doesn't have a recovery partition. I read that if I don't have a recovery partition, I can't make a recovery USB bootable drive....so how do I make one? And no, I cannot reinstall the OS on here, that would be beyond detrimental to what's going on here. (too many details to get into)Â
Alternatively, can I make one with my 10.8.5 MacbookPro at home and run it here on my Lion system?Â

I have some very seductive pictures of my wife that I want to secure in an unhackable* program on my iPhone and Mac so that they never see the light of day unless I enter the correct password.
Obviously my wife isn't going to be looking on my phone (she let me take the pictures with the phone in the first place)...my concern is if the phone is ever lost or stolen...I want those pictures totally unreachable if my phone ever winds up in the wrong hands.
I know that there is a very good program called "Folder Lock" for PC....but they don't have a corresponding Mac version (they do have an iPhone app, but then what do I do with the corresponding pictures that are on my Mac that Folder Lock doesn't have a desktop app for)?
So, anybody know of a Photo Locker/Encrypter/Vault for both the Mac and the iPhone?...don't necessarily care if they are the some company, just want end-to-end security so that if either one goes down, I have a backup on the other unit....but both are hackproof* if ever stolen or lost.
I should clarify one thing about my Mac requirements,...I'm actually looking for an application specifically designed for this exact purpose (as opposed to slick Terminal ".folder" fixes that would hide the folder, but in no way make it secure). So, an app with a Password is a Must, preferably with strong encryption.
