Applications :: BETTER Alternatives To X-Cart Gold / Extensive Experience With Ecommerce Software?
Feb 14, 2010
Two questions. First: I've used Quickbooks Pro for Windows using Parallels BUT I really dislike Windows AND Quickbooks. The only other solutions I've seen are MYOB. Does anyone have any experience or options?
Second: I'm launching a business with the majority of sales being online. I've used X-Cart extensively, and while it's powerful it could be better. I don't to spend the coin on something custom just yet, however I know X-Cart developers will create custom add-ons to X-Cart. Are there any BETTER alternatives to X-Cart Gold? Does anyone have any extensive experience with ecommerce software?

I have successfully converted my dad to a Mac and he purchased his first Macbook earlier today. The only program he absolutely needs for work is MS Access. Unfortunately, MS Office for Mac doesn't include MS Access. I have searched the forums and seen a few alternatives with Open Office being a pretty popular (and free!) solution. My question is this, if all my dad needs to do is be able to open MS Access documents and do minor revisions, is Open Office a solution that will meet his needs? Again, all he is really going to be doing is opening MS Access documents and reading their data.

I have been a Mac user for a long time and have always tried to convince my old man from jumping onboard the Mac bandwagon. He tells me that the only reason why he does not get a Mac is because of a specific software that he uses for his business. My father owns his own business and works from home, so he really needs just one computer, and so far, that one computer meets his needs due to the compatibility of the software with his Dell PC.
However, I really want to "update" his XP workstation by getting him a new Mac, but I am afraid it would go unused without this software that he needs for business. Does anyone know of any good alternatives to Floorplan 3d? I am really not that familiar with software for this industry. Here is a link to the software that he uses for his business: [URL]. Also, I am aware that Windows can be installed on a Mac and that is not a solution that I am seeking.

My wife does a lot of online browsing/shopping on a number of different sites, and is having a odd issue. The first time it happened, I thought it was a fluke, but it just happened again today. The specific sites that the problem occurred on were forever21 and piperlime. What happens is that you can no longer click on individual products to see the product details page--it just takes you to a blank white screen. Also, the site (or Safari) doesn't let you add any products to your cart--you can click on "Add to cart", but it never actually puts the item in your cart; the cart remains empty. If I quit Safari (not just close the window), and reopen Safari and reload the site, all is well. I'm thinking this may be a Java or Flash issue - Running 10.6.4, Safari 5.0 and the latest version of Flash (10.1.53.64).

alternatives to mathtype or endnote for use with iWork on Mac? I know that in iWork '09 these two are offered, but they also both come with a good price tag. I would mostly need a mathtype alternative but an endnote one would also be great if there exist any.

I've recently been running into problems with mouse clicks not being picked up by OS X. At first I thought it was my mouse, but it seems to happen with other USB mice as well. Turns out the problem is being caused by USB Overdrive. Seems there is a problem with it and 10.6.x. Turns out that I am not the only one with the problem and no one has heard from the developer of a workaround or patch to fix the problem.
I use a Logitech MX518 and Logitech won't release Mac drivers for it, so I need something like USB Overdrive to get full functionality. Does anyone here know of any alternatives to USB Overdrive that work with Snow Leapord?

When I go to the apple store on my MAC PRO I can select items but when going to the cart for check out the icon at top spins and at the bottom of the screen the message reads that it has loaded all but one item. The apple store is the only web page that does this all other web sites no problems. Had to call to apple to place order could not get page to load.

My wife's been working with Entourage for the past several months as she likes having all of her PIM data integrated in one place. In particular she likes the project view as this lets her see all of the relevant files, emails, notes, tasks and calendar appointments for a specific class (she's in grad school) in one place. Unfortunately she also wants to sync that information to her phone (a Nokia N82), and Entourage does not play nice with sync services. Every time we've tried setting up Entourage to sync with iCal so she can then sync with her phone we've run into a host of problems, including losing all of her calendar appointments and getting a massive number of duplicates.
As such I'm looking for an alternative to Entourage that duplicates the Project view features. The most important items for my wife are email, notes, files and calendar, she wants to be able to go to one place and look at all those items for individual classes. I've looked at Contactizer and Daylight, but both are a bit pricey, complicated and don't cover everything she wants, in particular they seem to lack the ability to look into the contents of a defined folder and track the files in there as Entourage can.

As I was trying to set up my brand new 13-inch MBP with my favorites application, I realized that Smultron will no longer be in development. There fore i looking for a replacement, that is a free text editor. I have downloaded TextWrangler and I was wondering if you knew other good software. Basically i am doing web design and at work I often need raw text without any rich edition. I also like the tab navigation. Smultron was good because it only did what I needed.

Over Christmas my MBP was put in an awkward position resulting in the USB thumb drive plugged in to the side USB port being bent. The damage was mainly to the thumb drive itself.
A few days later I tried using this same USB port for something else and noticed it appeared to be dead. I tried an SMC reset which didn't help, so I thought I'd take the cover off to inspect any possible damage. I wasn't able to see anything obvious apart from small, thin golden "buttons" with pointed heads that appear to be on a spring (I can't think of how else to describe them) that are in line with each of the USB/Firewire/Display ports on the left side of the logic board. Coincidentally, the button that lines up with the dead USB port is pushed in and not springing back out.
I have a genius bar appointment for Thursday, and I'm worried that I'll be told that I have to buy a new logic board to fix my little USB port. However, I was hoping someone could confirm my suspicions (and general curiosity) about the function of that little gold button I described above?

I have a mid 2010 MacPro 12 2.66 Ghz cpu system with 48 GB of ram. I was running Windows 7 32 bit on my Apple SSD drive, but thought that it would be interesting to see the performance difference if I installed Windows 7 64 bit. Due to SSD space limitations Windows 7 64 bit was installed on an internal hard disk rather than the SSD drive. Here are the results:
Windows 7 32 bit on Apple SSD TS512B configured with
2 GB of RAM
8 CPUs
Enable Adaptive Hypervisor checked
Processor 7.7
Memory 4.5
Graphics 6.0
Gaming 6.0
Hard disk 6.9
overall 4.5 (lowest score).
Windows 7 64 bit on Hitachi 2 TB drive HDS722020ALA330 configured with
8 GB of RAM
8 CPUs
Enable Adaptive Hypervisor checked
Processor 7.8
Memory 7.9
Graphics 6.0
Gaming 6.0
Hard disk 7.9
overall 6.0
I was surprised by the increase in memory speed, and even more so by the hard disk improvement - even though on a physical disk rather than an SSD. In two cases (memory and hard disk) it hits the maximum performance number possible of 7.9.

How is the new update working with your PPC macs? Did your update go smoothly and are you seeing any performance gains? I am very curious because I hear intel mac users are having a slew of problems but I would like to hear from the PPC side of the fence.
I am too nervous to update right now as I have too much critical data I need to back up first and wont be able to update today.

From reviews, it looks like the Corsair 256GB SSD is not bad except the random write speed.
Anybody is using this SSD on the mid-09 uMBP? any issues? I'm considering a SSD for my mid-09 15" 2.53GHz uMBP, but it seems that several members have reported issues for using OCZ SSDs on mid-09 uMBP.
