utilizing memory on iMac. 320gb almost used (7gb left). Think this is due to extensive iTunes music library. How can I move this to an external drive to free up memory on iMac?

I'm a first time user for Mac and I've never ever had a laptop with a 256GB storage. So here are some of my concerns:
Musics
Do I have to sacrifice my music library?
What if I transfer my musics to the external storage and download it into Itunes?
Does it mean I have to connect the external storage everytime I connect my Ipod?
Or I can only choose a certain amount of songs to put in?.
I recently moved my music library to an external library by changing the pathway in Edit/Preferences/Advanced and then consolidating the library. Everything worked for a while but now when I open itunes it is not able to find all the files. Bizarrely for a lot of albums it can find one or two of the songs but the rest all get the "Unable to locate original music file" error message. The music is all there on the hard drive but I don't want to have to manually locate each one. Does anyone know what is causing this or have a script to locate the rest of the music automatically?

I apparently have 111gb of music on my computer, but only 55.something in my iTunes library. Every time something is downloaded or added, I add it right to iTunes. There is nothing that has been downloaded or ripped and not added to iTunes. Thus, the amount of music in my iTunes library should match what my memory actually shows.

its 1000s of songs . Originally I used the time machine as a networked drive but it can cause the songs to pause so I'm thinking it would be better to have the songs on the internal imac drive

So, I went into iTunes Perferences --> Advanced, and set the library to a new, empty folder on the new drive. Nothing changed. I expected all my music to vanish from iTunes, so that I would have to re-import it. However, all the music remained, still on the old disk. At this point, if I were to recreate the library on the new disk, I would have all of my music twice. Is it possible to move an iTunes library from one external drive to another, or am I stuck with my original choice until I buy a new machine? If I can move it, can one of you clever folks explain how it could be done?

I want to get a mac but one thing that concerns me is my itunes. I have a massive library and if I get a mac I will need to copy the library to my external hard drive from my pc then copy it again to the mac. How could I do this without losing my playlists, rating etc? And also if you have all your photos in iPhoto can you access them without opening iPhoto? If you can how? Because I have played around on Macs in the Apple Store and couldn't see where they would be!

I've gone into Edit, Preferences, Advanced and told it that my I Tunes Music Location is: f:/itunes/itunesmusic But when I open Itunes, I still don't see my songs. View 2 Replies View RelatedI just updated to iTunes 11.2.2 on my macMini following an update to OS X 10.9.3. I have my music library stored on an external 1TB firewire disk and some on a second gen iPod. The iPod music is accessable and will play but the music on the external disk, while showing up correctly in iTunes, will not play. I can't even play the music from within finder (no play icon on the music file icon in finder.) I can use the right click menu option to show a music item in iTunes in Finder and it knows right where it is so it seems itunes is fully aware of the libraries location on the external drive.
One additional point is that I also install Xcode 6 Beta which would not install with iTunes opened. I was wondering if the beta of Xcode 6 is at issue? If is what will be needed to backout that instalation? What changes does Xcode 6 do that affects iTunes in the first place? Maybe it isn't Xcode 6 but something else just not sure.

I have an iMac that is rapidly filling up. I would like to move my iTunes and iPhoto library to my external harddrive (I currently use for Time Machine). Is this possible or even adviseable? A great way to free up some space on my Powerbook g4. Question is, why does iTunes keep changing my library folder after I'd already changed it when I initially set up the hard drive as my iTunes library destination?
Another question is how do I make sure that all my music files automatically go to the folder on the external hard drive when I download music. For example I may snag a free song from a website and will double click it after downloading and it plays in itunes. I want that file to be saved on my external hard drive as well (yes it's plugged up and plugged in).
I only have an 8g ipod so I have to constantly check and uncheck songs that I want to hear, so I want to be sure they are all in the same locale. And one way I know that certain files are on my internal and not external is when i unplug my external those files still play when they shouldn't unless it's plugged up.

Prior to Yosemite, I could go into iPhoto from the left column of finder window and transfer.
One of the crappiest things I don't like about New iPhoto is that it's so difficult to export the photos. It feels like Apple thinks they own them. Pulling my music off was much easier.
Finder no longer gives me the iPhoto option anymore. The PHOTOS Folder only shows photos that came in from a camera or other source.
Photo Stream can't do it as it's just a storage drive. My photos are set up to go from photo stream right into my Macbook so they have to be somewhere on my hard drive.

My old iMac had OSX 10.5.xx and iTunes 9.xx installed and the iTunes library was stored on an external HD. I have run iTunes that way for many years and had to upgraded the HD a couple of times to the point I now have a 4TB drive for my iTunes library.
I have now bought a new iMac that has OSX 10.9.3 and iTunes 11.2.2 installed on it. I changed the default library location under iTunes preferences but it tunes does not read the files and keeps on wanting me to file my files from the Cloud.
Can I use my flash drive as a storage for music and use it in iTunes. Like how on a CD it shows it as a CD and lists the songs on it. I would like to do this on a flash drive as well.

View 2 Replies View Related...now I don't have the same functionality with iTunes. Basically, I can't use iTunes at all anymore as the interface for my music and videos. Once the external drive is mounted, I can navigate through it and play individual songs, but I can't use iTunes to do that. All my previous Playlists show up down the left side of iTunes, but there isn't any music in them.
I downloaded 2 songs yesterday, made a Playlist out of them, and because the path in the Advanced tab of the iTunes Preferences is correct, it automatically added the songs to the external hard drive. I synced my iPod and it was completely erased except for the 2 new songs. Is there a way to use iTunes to navigate my music like I used to when I stored the information on the internal hard drive but keep the information on the external drive? I have a Mac running Snow Leopard and the latest version of iTunes.
I need more space on my hd. A lot of space is being taken up by family photos in iPhoto. How do I move those photos to an external hd to free up space on the the Macbook?
